Daily NFL Draft Prospect Profile: Perrish Cox, CB, Oklahoma State
[Remember to check the '2010 NFL Draft' section for all stories relating to the draft.]
Cornerback may not seem like a primary need for the New York Giants. Terrell Thomas and Corey Webster are quality corners, and Aaron Ross might give them three good ones. If he isn't playing safety, that is.
With the prevalence of four- and five-wide receiver sets in the NFL nowadays, though, you can never have enough top-notch cover corners.
That brings me to the subject of today's Daily NFL Draft Prospect Profile -- Oklahoma State corrnerback Perrish Cox.
This is an extremely gifted player, with an extremely checkered history. Let's take a closer look at the potential, and the pitfalls, surrounding one of the best corners in the draft.
Perrish Cox Scouting Reports
From Draft Countdown.
Terrific natural athleticism --- Excels in both man and zone coverage --- Physical at the line --- Will tackle and support the run --- Elusive with great vision --- Is very confident with a short memory --- Also a prolific kick/punt returner.
Already has three children --- Arrested in the Fall of '09 on charges of driving with a suspended license --- Was suspended for the Cowboy's Cotton Bowl appearance as a senior after missing a curfew, which ended his college career --- Supremely talented and possesses first-round physical tools but isn't technically sound and intangibles are shaky --- Must keep his head on straight and get coached up a bit but has the ability to be a starter as well as a great return man in the NFL.
From DraftAce.
Cox has the physical tools to be a successful cornerback in the league, but his perceived lack of maturity and his lack of size may cause his stock to fall. One thing he does have going for him, however, is his ability to contribute on special teams. He's one of the top return specialists in this year's draft class. That, coupled with his knack for big plays on defense, should land him a spot in the 2nd or 3rd round. If he does well in interviews, and teams are comfortable with his character concerns, he could even sneak into the late 1st round.
From NEPatriotsDraft.com.
Cox is a good corner whose value is increased due to superior return skills. Cox had some off-field issues at Oklahoma State, which led to his suspension for the Cowboys' bowl game. Cox' speed and bulk are a rare combination.
Pros: Return Skills, Speed, Bulk
Cons: Off-Field Issues
Verdict: 2nd-4th Round
From the National Football Post.
He's a gifted athlete with natural balance and footwork in coverage, can quickly get his feet under him and then click and close on the ball. He showcases good closing speed and generates impressive power as a tackler when asked to drive on a receiver after the catch.
He does have some character concerns and missed the team's bowl game this season for breaking team rules. Overall, he's a tall, physical corner who can tackle in the secondary, close on the ball and run with NFL receivers downfield. He has the upside to develop into a good starting corner in any type of scheme because of his size and power to press as well as the ability to close in zone/off-coverage.
Why Cox fits with the Giants
Because you can never have too many quality cornerbacks, that's why. In a pass-happy league, you have to have four or five good ones. Otherwise, you wind up playing with three safeties on the field -- a situation the Giants found themselves in far too often in 2009. Cox seems to have all the physical skills and would make sense as a mid-round selection. Plus, if he is a quality return man that is always a plus.
Why the Giants should pass
Those character concerns. This guy might be a terrific player. Sounds to me, though, like he could also be a huge headache. Guys with off-the-field issues that end up hurting their teams -- and missing a Bowl game qualifies as hurting your team -- are guys you need to be leery of. The Giants are not the Cincinnati Bengals. There have to be other talented DBs without the baggage that Cox carries.

No.
Seems like he’s the CB version of Travis Henry (at least he’s off to a good start with the 3 kids).
Might be a good player…so will others. No need for the potential headache.

1st round talent but...
all the off the field nonsense….will keep him outa the 1st mayb even the 2nd..
id go for him in the third to much talent and he is a great football player….

If you can't keep it together....
as a college player to appear in a Bowl Game, can you really be counted on to be a “Championship” player? pass.
great theory but
not practical, not every college player coming out of college can be a Tim Tebow. These are young kids, they make mistakes. Remember Ahmad Bradshaw.
Perrish is a good football player and can add alot of talent and depth to our roster. But theres a sgnificant risk with drafting him. Thats why he wont be a good selection in RD 1 or 2. But he would be the Best Talent available in RD 3, and at that point worth the cost of a 3rd round pick.
The draft is all about value—and perrish has it.
They make mistakes...
Granted, we ALL make mistakes. However there are a whole lot other talented people in this draft who managed to stay on their teams and the track record would seem to indicate recurring judgement errors, and not mistake followed by corrective action. I’m not saying he’s talentless, but that there are a lot other talented people out there that aren’t carrying more excess baggage than Mayflower. I’ll stick with my pass.
Sounds like he has the skills and football smarts..
But lacks off-field decision making and plain ‘ol common sense..Did his off-field nonsense happen before, during, or after he had three children?..If it occurred before or during but not after, then he may have gotten his head screwed on straight..otherwise I would pass..Coughlin won’t want him, Fewell won’t want him..We won’t want him.

Hmmm pressed enter too fast..We want a guy that can cover wideouts, and run back punts and
Kickoffs…We don’t need a guy that can run really fast from the Law..

could be…
The Browns found a very solid CB in Eric Wright from USC, a questinable character. Top 15 talent..but a nincompoop in college.
I haven’t heard anything to the sort in the pros, so its always possible.
I’ve never been against the Giants getting a secondary player..and Perrish is very talented so yea, he could be worth a 3/4 just like Wright.
The problem is, I think he’ll go sooner then that cuz he really is that good. Also..this is a pretty deep CB draft in the middle rounds..basically 7-8 CB’s are of the same caliber. So if they go CB, they could find one with less issues.

Later Round maybe!!
I think we have a good stable of corners webby, AR (who should remain at corner), TT and bruce johnson who both are only going to get better. we forget about all the talented CB’s who are probably on practice squads because they werent drafted high or whatever so i would grab one of them or a CB in rd 5 or so but dnt think we really need to spend a draft pick of any sort on one.
But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!
He is a great talent tho
as far as off field issues go, everyone makes mistakes and more than likely anyone at that age has some character issues, i dnt trust anyone thats squeaky clean, all that means to me is u have never had your character tested or you were so popular they hid it to make you appear clean. with football players its not have you been knocked dwn its what did you do to get up…….. and did you learn from your mistakes.
But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!
Yeah 'squeaky clean'...Sounds like Tiger Woods...the only thing sqeaky with him..
Were the beds and headboards..
