A Discussion on the Offensive Line

This doesn't concern the defense, but rather the offensive line, which we all know will be a big need in the near future. Here's the current starting group from T, G, C, C, G, T:

Diehl, Seubert, O'Hara, Snee, McKenzie. There's a couple things we can assume about this for next year:

1) Will Beatty will make a strong push for the LT position, kicking Diehl to another position.

2) The weak links here are Seubert and McKenzie, with O'Hara still providing extremely solid play but is getting grey in the whiskers.

3) The Giants will draft for the O-line in this year's draft.

With this in mind here are some possibilities for next year's line:

Star-divide

1) Beatty, Seubert, O'Hara, Snee, Diehl

2) Beatty, Diehl, O'Hara, Snee, McKenzie

3) Beatty, Diehl, O'Hara, Snee, Draft Pick

4) Beatty, Draft Pick, O'Hara, Snee, Diehl

5) Diehl, Seubert, O'Hara, Snee, McKenzie

6) Diehl, Draft Pick, O'Hara, Snee, Beatty

Some prospects that might be worth looking at are:

1st Round: Mike Iupati, Brian Bulaga, Anthony Davis, Trent Williams, Maurkice Pouncey

2nd Round: Jared Veldheer, Rodger Saffold, Vladimir Ducasse

3rd Round: Jon Asamoah, John Jerry, Mitch Petrus, Kyle Calloway, J.D. Walton

4th Round: Tony Washington, Jason Fox, Matt Tenant, Selvish Capers

5th Round: Sergio Render, Ed Wang, Sam Young, Mike Tepper

6th Round: Mike Johnson, Jeff Byers, Thomas Austin

Personally, I would CONSIDER Brian Bulaga, but I'm not as high on him as many are, in the first round. As for the 2nd, I'd be ecstatic if Rodger Saffold fell to us.

Realistically, I'd say 3rd or 4th round is the way to go in terms of drafting Oline, though it all depends on who's available at the time. I'm very high on Kyle Calloway, who had a solid combine, and is a mauler-type run blocker who'd be a prototypical RT for us. I'd also consider Mitch Petrus, the dude who put up an insane 44 reps at the combine, or John Jerry in the 3rd as well.

So who do you guys want to rep Big Blue next season, and how d'you want the line to look?

I think that Bulaga, given the idea that he may be better suited for RT

and possibly an elite possibly an elite one, means I’d take him if he fell (like you made us trade back for in your mock :).

Trent Williams too, better suited for RT and would fit nicely for the Giants.

I think Diehl could be incredible at LG (he wouldn’t have to play in space) and I think that if they have a chance to select those top tackles…they should (unless Spiller or McClain are there of course)

As far as non-1st round thing things…I think I’d rather go the OG or OC route instead of OT. Saffold’s nice, but I think the talent level of the mid round OG’s is better then Saffold.

I like Pietrus for OG, Asmoah’s good too.

I think the best value could be with Matt Tennant or JD Walton.

I think Tennant could be as good for us as another former BC player, Chris Snee. Coughlin may like another BC lineman too!

I hear ya,

I have no idea why, but for some reason, Bulaga reminds me of Robert Gallery alot. No real reason why, he just does. That’s why I’m a little weary about drafting him. That and the whole thyroid issue.

I know you’ll disagree with me, Free, but my philosophy for the 1st round is McClain, Morgan, Spiller (in that order) and if neither are left, then trade back and pick up picks. In my opinion, no Oline is worth our pick unless its Okung.

Pietrus is so strong, he’d be awesome as OG (though I prefer if Diehl moves there) and Matt Tennant would be a good player to groom for when O’Hara’s time comes. I also like Tony ‘Sexytime’ Washington later on as well as another player to groom.

Dream Draft:

1) Rolando McClain
2) Chad Jones
3) Kyle Calloway
4) Linval Joseph
5) Ben Tate
6) Sergio Render
7) Zoltan Mesko

+1

on the Bulaga part. He is a bust waiting to happen.

by mclaren_is_the_best on Mar 30, 2010 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions

If Bulaga has to be a RT

then no, he’s not. I think he’s a technically sound player that could start right away if needed. He’s a mauler, yet is a good enough pass blocker that I’d think he’d be better then McKenzie right away

But RT has a slimmer chance of busting. Even Gallery would’ve been fine as a RT

I don’t hate Iowa football either like ^this dude either.

True,

I reallly can’t come up with a valid argument against your reasoning, it makes sense, I just personally am not high on him.

What I CAN argue for is that if McClain or Morgan or Spiller are available, then its a no brainer to pass on Bulaga. McClain because of a huge need, Morgan because of positional value, and Spiller because of upside haha

Dream Draft:

1) Rolando McClain
2) Chad Jones

absolutely

I’d even add Dan Williams in there.

I may even have that little order as McClain, Spiller, Big Dan Williams, Bulaga, Trent Williams.

Only reason I don’t mention Big Dan is cuz I constantly see him gone to a 3-4 team above us, even more so then McClain is he off the board at #15 when it comes to mocks

that said...

if they shit-can McKenzie, which almost happened before FA occured, then I gotta pencil Diehl (or there’s the possibility they got Beatty are RT..which would stink)…

Then Iupati is a must at #15. I’d love to get a dude like that. He just seems like he’d be the mauling LG they’ve been missing since..well, they moved Diehl to LT.

Then again, with Iupati at LG..I think that would mean Diehl sticks at LT. So I dunno.

I voted for #2

with us using a draft pick on a RT but not having him start just yet.

Anthony Davis is a really talented guy who some people are now down on, before the combine interviews he was #2 OT on everybodies board, but he is soooo talented and I would be happy to see Reese take him out of all tackles not named Russell.

by mclaren_is_the_best on Mar 30, 2010 6:15 PM EDT reply actions

The reason why Davis's stock is falling

is cuz of a bad combine showing where he showed up overweight. Also there are work ethic concerns. He’s definitely a possibility in the 1st and has great potential.

If I were Jerry Reese though, I wouldn’t take him simply because I don’t want that much of a risk with my 1st rd pick. He’s on par with the reasoning for not taking Taylor Mays or Jason Pierre Paul…they’re high bust prospects. Well, at least in my opinion.

I DO AGREE though on picking up a tackle and developing him for 2011

There is a big difference between Davis and JPP and Mays

Davis was a great player on the field, while JPP only played in 12 games at the highest level and Mays stunk in coverage.

by mclaren_is_the_best on Mar 30, 2010 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions

you're right,

I just think that because of work ethic, Davis is just as likely to bust as JPP or Mays…or perhaps, more likely, just to be a mediocre tackle as opposed to what he could be…

Davis

Local boy from NJ. The biggest recruit Rutgers ever got. From what I’ve read, he was the #1 tackle prospect in the country, and it seems he is very aware of the fact. Doesn’t feel the need to better himself.

Maybe he can change, maybe not. I think the fact that he is local could hurt him. If part of the distractions are the people around him, then it would be better to ship him far away. It’s harder to find trouble in Green Bay.

the whole home town team thing probably works against him here.

I chose 4

option 2 maybe cool for next year but I would still draft someone like jon jerry and then move diehl to RT, everyone likes Diehl at LG and I would have said that a couple years ago until I saw him play LT, he did a good and notable job at LT so why move him to G, when at RT he would dominate and even though he is still in space the right side would be perfect for him, our edges would be sealed with Beatty and him. Jerry, Ohara & Snee would dominate inside and we would get back to “Giants” football.

Leader of the Price-McClain Campaign!!

by Blue Gates on Mar 30, 2010 6:31 PM EDT reply actions

Diehl could be fine at RT

but the problem is that LG spot.

Its either Seubert, or the rook at LG. And then of course if we’re switching Diehl, that means that you got Beatty and Seubert/Rook as our blind side for Eli.

From a drafting value standpoint, Diehl to RT and drafting a LG probably makes more sense.

But from an experience standpoint..I think you gotta have Beatty and Diehl along that left side then let McKenzie battle it out with a RT..whether that’s a first rounder like Bulaga or Williams or someone later on like Veldheer, Ducasse or Saffold.

BTW

ESPN and Kiper, at least on Sportcenter, has the Giants getting Ro McClain.

Kiper also said before that..that the Giants can’t rely on Eli..meaning he would’ve never said that about McClain, cuz I would’ve beat him to a pulp.

I don’t know what Giants games he was watching last year, but Eli carried the team. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Eli surpassed his numbers from last year

by lizard on Mar 31, 2010 8:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Eh

This is a somewhat weak offensive tackle class.

Outside of Bulaga and Okung, I wouldn’t select an OT in the first round.

Though, this is an extremely deep class for centers. The Giants MUST select a center in this draft.

by Nfpdawg on Mar 30, 2010 7:05 PM EDT reply actions

yup.

this is why I want them to trade back, at least in some round…not necessarily the first.

If someone they can come away with a RB, OT, C, DT, MLB, SLB and a S…and a partridge in a pear tree.

..I think by trading back in say…the 2nd? Maybe they get 2 3’s from a giving team as well as a 6/7?

DWTDD

by FreeBradshaw on Mar 30, 2010 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd like a C/G

Ideally I’d like a future center because I think that position needs time to learn. Best situation is a center that can play guard, which most can. Then the rook can compete with Seubert for his spot but doesn’t have to win it, bonus if he does. Diehl moves to RT where he will be a beast and Beatty plays LT. I’d be far more worried about putting a rook on either edge than at an interior position, so I don’t think drafting a rook to replace McKenzie is the best plan. If you want to leave McKenzie there and not play the rook then you don’t need to draft for the RT spot in the first place. Beatty can get the LT and Diehl the LG spot with no new players added.

BPA

I am fine with Diehl at LG or RT. I think you let Reese do what he always does, find the best player available at our spot.

We have not done well recently against goal-line defenses, so I’d prefer a pile pusher. So I’m not a fan of those 6th round guys listed above, or guys like Capers or Fox who project solely as left tackles. I like the 3rd round guys (except for Asamoah) and the 5th rounders, and think they would all be good value in those rounds.

by ct17 on Mar 31, 2010 11:01 AM EDT reply actions

The goal line thing

is maybe why a OG, a powerful OG, like Mitch Pietrus, could work a bitter better with Diehl moved to RT.

Remember Pietrus was a fullback when he started off. So if he should so happen to fall in that 3/4 range…that’s a hell of a weapon.

Imagine they put him as a TE in motion, with Hedge and Jake running behind him?

If that doesn’t get a push in short yardage….I dunno man…

petrus, goal line

I think Petrus profiles like Snee. A big, powerful guy that can pull. Our running game always works best when our interior guys are in motion. When Snee and Hedge get through the LT/LG gap cleanly, we can’t be stopped even in flag football.

Part of the problem is that we insist on putting big backs in to supposedly push the pile. Jacobs can run anyone over one-on-one. But at the goal line, he is crashing into 2000 lbs. of massed linemen. No running back can move that pile. You need a guy that can sneak into small gaps for that one yard. Joe Morris had 21 TDs one year that way.

Now if we draft Campbell in the 1st and put him at TE, and have Petrus and Hedge as two fullbacks, that would be a great running game.

by ct17 on Mar 31, 2010 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Bruce....

I’d definitely take him if he were there in the 2nd (which he won’t be), but he’s too much risk to take at 15. He’s got the look of a prototypical workout warrior, but with his athleticism, if he can GET it, he’d be an amazing run blocker who’d be able to get downfield in a hurry

the thing about Bruce is the injury history

This shows a bit that when he’s on the field….he really is legit and an elite blocker as a pass and run blocker.

Given the Giants OL coach’s track record, to have a specimen like that to work with?

The problem is that injury history. I’d hope the Giants are doing their HW on him with the injuries..but if they check out and this guy is healthy…I mean…6"6 315lbs and is that sort of athlete?

If the injuries check out and he’s there at #15..I’d run to the podium.

..maybe even if Spiller’s on the board.

The Lions want out of that #2 spot bad, Maybe Reese will entertain it doubt it though!! but maybe he has something in place already, they could still probably pick up a LT at #15……we would probably have to give them Osi or somethin as well so dnt know about that but for Suh or McCoy it might be worth it even though it is not Reese’s style, then again the book is still out on what exactly his style is, he has a big draft day jump in him, I know it.

by BigBlueD on Apr 1, 2010 2:52 AM EDT reply actions

I'm starting to have those thoughts too

Especially after just remembering what Brandon Moore on the Jets did in the two Cincy games last year. Greene had trouble finding the hole… because it was ten yards down the field and heading away from him.

by ct17 on Apr 1, 2010 9:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Option 2

I don’t want to start an Oline rookie next year. We should absolutely draft one though. Should it be in the first round is a really good question. Biggest hole on the team is our linebacking core. Rolando will be the pick at 15 if he’s there. However if JR likes him that much and thinks he will be an impact starter then there’s a chance we could move up ahead of Denver and Miama. Derrick Morgan would be a no brainer as well if he fell to 15. And then there’s CJ Spiller. I understand we could get a RB later. Well if that’s your point this draft is chock full of linebackers too. We can grab one maybe two in the 2-4 rounds. The thing is WHO can make an immediate impact. Spiller will be taking the rock to the house at least 6 times next year. And he would be a nasty threat from anywhere on the field. His college resume and versatility will make him the likely offensive rookie of the year. If Eli feels that a dynamic explosive athlete like him is available and we should indulge JR may oblige. I still put my dream list at McClain, Morgan, Spiller.
