Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers.
Making the pick for the Vikings is a newcomer to BBV, Charles L. He writes:
This is officially my very first post on BBV. What better way to start an addiction than to make a pick in our Mock draft. First off, Owner Zygi Wilf is an old school Jersey boy, much like myself. He did his undergrad at a school that denied me, Fairleigh Dickinson University. Which is why picking for the Vikings was a little exciting. However, I digress. The first thing I was to address is the some needs of the Vikings.
Need No. 1 -- Offensive line
The unit should be better. Hutchison is the only constant. McKinnie seems to have fallen out of favor, and Herrera appears to be the biggest scapegoat. Upgrading this unit is vital to the productive of AP and company.
Need No. 2 – Secondary
Winfield will be 33, and had a flat tire for some the year and Madieu Williams struggles in coverage. An elite front 7 can only do so much if the secondary is essentially empty.
Need No. 3 -- Defensive Line
With part of that Williams wall contemplating retirement and a compliment DE to Jared Allen would be great. Depth and potential starters are needed here.
Needs I didn’t mention: MLB: Henderson was IR, and is 29. Quarterback:too easy …next. I don’t do soap operas.
It was too early for Chad Jones or Nate Allen, the next best safeties after Mays went. Spikes was considered but I also felt he was a reach as well. I thought a lot about Pouncey here, especially with the cooler talk about his ability to play RG. Brian Price is available, and fits a need if/when Pat Williams retires. Carlos Dunlap would be a good pick, also to compliment Jared Allen. I agonized over Price, Dunlap, McCourty.
McCourty (5-foot-10, 193 pounds) fills a need at CB, runs a 4.4 40 and is a very smart kid (his twin was drafted by Tennessee last year). He has good speed and size for the postion. He plays special teams well, returning kick offs and not to mention the three blocked kicks he had last year. He had 80 tackles, 10 pass deflections but only one interception in 13 games. He will be an instant plug in on ST and will compete and proably win the nickel spot.
Cooler talk, a.k.a rumor mill, has Winfield moving to safety and in that case … McCourty would start …The Vikings could do worse than a young Ronde Barber.
My take: I really don't know McCourty that well, but corner is a recognized need for Minnesota. Besides, I am OK with leaving Allen and Jones on the board.
'Charles L' is up next with the Indianapolis Colts selection.
