Mock Draft Monday, 3/22/10
Brian Price has made a comeback. Last week Rolando McClain was the most popular target for the Giants in mocks that had been updated, but this week a slew of mocks which previously linked Price to the Giants have been updated, and they continue to believe the UCLA defensive tackle will be the pick at 15. DraftAce has a pretty good summary of the Giants draft position:
"I struggle with the Giants pick every time I update the mock draft. Their biggest hole (linebacker) is the weakest position in terms of 1st-round prospects. Sean Weatherspoon could be an option, but it would be a reach and the Giants tend to avoid reaching for needs in the 1st round. The next best option in terms of finding a balance between need and value may be Price."
Mocking the Draft, Joel Weiser, and Randall Weida of FF Toolbox also have the Giants taking Price.
Don Banks of SI.com & Ben Standig of FF Toolbox have the Giants selecting Rolando McClain.
Walter Football agrees with Ed and sees the Giants taking Derrick Morgan. What's strange is that they actually predict McClain to fall past the Giants, all the way to the Steelers at #18. I understand their reasoning, but I have to believe if McClain is available at 15, there's no way the Giants pass on him. Ed admitted as much when making his pick in our community mock draft.
DraftTek still believes OT Trent Williams will be the choice.
Ricky Dimon of FF Toolbox also still believes LB Jerry Hughes will be the choice. I still believe he's crazy.
Finally, for those of you who are interested in mocks that predict past the first round, Football's Future has a second round mock, and Walter Football has updated their 2nd-4th round mocks.
Football's Future has the Giants taking DT Cam Thomas of North Carolina
Walter Football has the Giants taking DT Tyson Alualu of Cal in the 2nd; LB Sean Lee of Penn St. in the 3rd; and RB Anthony Dixon of Mississippi St. in the 4th.

Of course he did
thats the official hub for ex Giants, especially defense, K dock is still good though
But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!
AND
James Butler, Fred Robbins, Craig Dahl aaaaaaannd either Osi or Kiwi is probably coming if we decide to draft Morgan HaHa.
But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!
There's always the possibility
that Jerry just doesn’t like McClain as much as the consensus, for whatever reason. They certainly haven’t given any indication of who they like. Although, if they pass on McClain when he’s available, the internet might explode.
This is a great argument
I admitted how close I came to making Price my choice in our Mock Draft. I don’t really think you can be upset if Price is the pick. BPA at a position of need, even if Morgan is rated more highly. Only a month to go … yippee!!!!
I agree Ed
I would not be disappointed in the least if Price was the pick. I’m not as big a fan of Morgan as most, and I think Price will be the better pro with his quick first step. I’d be thrilled with a guy like Weatherspoon as well.
Sean Lee
from penn doesnt sound like a bad deal in the third, especially if it meant we could take b. price in the 1st
Or I much rather Chaney with B.Price in the 1st
things are starting to shape up just right!!!!! I would take Chaney in second though, just to be safe.
But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!
I'm....
not crazy about DT on this on.
I was buying into the Morgan pick….IF we move one of our DEs.
i still like OT over DT though…question is will the guys i like (Bulaga and Williams) be there.
"If you don't know what you're doing... just rush the quarterback" - LT
I've changed my mind more than a woman on this but
i’ll be happy with McClain, Spoon, Price, Morgan or one of the stud OTs. I don’t want to see a trade down.
Think Price is a reach at #15
but what do I know?
Holding out for McClain and then perhaps Trent Wiliams (or Lupati if JR thinks he can play RT ) or Dan Williams at DT if Rolando is gone is gone.
Not sure I see THAT much advantage to Price over Tyson Alualu who should be available in Round #2
+1
DT is it really that much of a need? Sure that position sucked last year, But Alford will be back, Canty and Coffield are gonna Start Bernard as a Back up. Everyone has to know no Rookie of the Giants Under Coughlin Walks the Field Game 1 as a Starter! No matter what round they get picked from.

Canty and Cofield started at the end of last year too and they s – u – c – k – e -d.

Canty was injured and still getting used to a 4-3 defense and Cofield was still getting back into game shape after knee surgery. You ignore injuries as if they’re irrelevant.
I’m talking about the very last game of the season. If they are still feeling the effects of an injury from 3 months earlier then there is something wrong

No rookie starts
unless he is clearly dominant which i project price to be, but TC probably will have him on the bench especially until he perfects his leverage against NFL linemen. TC is crazy though because the best teacher for alot of young players is experience and making mitakes. Sometimes i think he confuses them more by benching them, Parcells and Belichick are from that school too but theyhave loosened their grips a bit lately and i think TC will as well.
As for the DT’s you mentioned yeah Canty is a starter and i like him but he has always had motivation issues, Bernard seems to just be there for a check (but i still like him) and Coefield is on his last year of his contract, with that being said DT is a need and Price fills that void. Also, if you know Brian Price’s story you know he is just as motivated as Michael Oher was last year.
But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!
I’m so out of the loop, spending all my time covering a mediocre hockey team. I like the Morgan mock pick though, Ernie A said it best, you can never have too many pass rushers

Mcclain said in an interview that he wants to play in a 3-4 defense.
Brian price is a gap penetrator. We have that in canty and Alford. We need a fat athletic guy like Dan Williams who will create double teams and let our highly paid defensive ends make plays.

If Reese wants Price...
I think we could trade down and get him. The risk is we miss him, but as long as we don’t trade down too far, we still get someone both very good, and probably better than we should as it looks like a lot of questionable choices or need picks will be taken, which will be players the Giants have no interest in anyways. Maybe McClain will drop, I’d still think it’s a 33% chance, but if we’re picking at #15, and the choices are what we had in this mock, I’m all for Morgan. I’d also consider Spiller and Thomas along with Price if both McClain and Morgan were gone and we took the pick at #15, with the assumption that the additional player available (instead of Morgan) would be someone like Campbell or one of the quarterbacks, whom I don’t think make the Giants board. All that said, I’d be shocked if Reese took Spiller, if only because of the public relations problem of going offense and I suspect a desire to give Fewell a new item or two to make an impression with. If the Giants end up with Price, I won’t have a fit about it, but I don’t see any need to take him at #15.
Price is Cool!!
If we take Price in the first round, then we have to trade that 3rd pick and get Kirk Morrison. But if McClain is there at 15 we should take him. My real opinion is that we should do whatever we have to do to get that guy, even if it means trading up. We really don’t have that many holes to fill, so why not use an extra pick to get a stud MLB. We can use our late picks to fill special teams needs. I believe in Jerry, he hasn’t really let us down yet, I expect guys like Beckum and Sintim will get their game up next year! 82
Why
Trade for morrison when a player like Chaney is still available. He might be a younger better version
But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!
I would be dissappointed
if we took price at 15,(No need to say I’m still on Spoon’s bandwagon) but I would rather have Dan Williams if anything. Isn’t price another pass rusher? How was he against the run? I Haven’t heard much about his run stuffer abilities. I’m really big on the Fat Tack as I’ve heard them called. Spagnolo’s defense was gap control and he did a great job of calling plays. Now it’s a new era, but like I’ve said before I really love Jerry Reese as a GM and I will back whatever he does until he proves me wrong.
Run stopping
Price is above average, he can however get washed by bigger linemen once and a while, he has never been dominated for a whole game at all but he has dominated linemen on very good teams while being doubled, well they attempt to double him but his first step is so illegal it often doesn work.
But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!
He had 22 TFL in his last year
that is his run stopping repertoire for now

Why do people keep saying rookies won't start?
Barry Cofield, Chris Snee, Aaron Ross all started their rookie year. Kiwi, Manning, Steve Smith, Beatty, Jacobs, Bradshaw, Alford, Boss all got considerable playing time their rookie season. The Giants will play rookies if they are good enough.
+1
Good Points curtis……………..KP also got alot of snaps for a backup (S) in his rookie campaign as well. What I think it is though, is that he will play them but he limits what they can do, take KP for instance, he played but he was instructed to never move off the hash meaning he couldnt free roam and take advantage of his skill set, so they do play but he restricts them.
But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!
If the took Price I would cheer...
Even though I would prefer someone like Dan Williams or any larger, run stuffing tackle.
I guess its personal preference, but to me its so hard to watch the game when teams are jamming it over C/G for 7 yards a pop. I just can’t stomach seeing that.
The Giants have never typically played with a Ngata or Wilfork or Sam Adams type (although Jim Burt kind of played that way in a different era with smaller players), I would really like to see it versus “athletic” tackles who try and rush the passer. My contention is we have guys that can rush the pasher from the edge, lets try and hold the line in the middle, control the gaps or push the pocket.
John Mendenhall used to play that “aggressive” DT style, and despite some big plays, what my memory leaves me with most is these giant holes left in the middle of the defense.
I don't think the Giants will trade down ...

sorry cut myself off
the question I meant to lead to was,
If the Giants DO opt to trade down, how far would they have to drop to pick up another 2nd? What about another 3rd?

According to the Draft Value Chart
24th-32nd will get you into the bottom half of the 2nd. 18th-23rd will get you into the 3rd.

Stampede Blues Mock...
Just had the Gmen taking Spiller…
Oh god. I am sure Free is signing up for that board righ now.
Although I understand that our return game sucks and that we can always use another RB – I don’t understand the conversations about how our offense needs this and our offense need that when our D is surrendering 45 points a game. So our remedy is that we need to try and score 50?
This formula has NOT worked in the NFL. Itsbeen a proven, failing formula to win championships. Yes, teams are more high-powered now and you need to be able to score to keep up the Colts and such – BUT – the only highpowered team that won anything because of their offense was the Vermeil Rams and the Greatest Show on Turf – ONE ring. With the Colts dynamic offense, Peyton only has ONE ring and it is because that year Bob Sanders and the Colts D rose up and became the best DEFENSE in the postseason – that is why they won.
The Tom Brady Super Offense – LOST to the Gmen, with a real D, coordinator and scheme
The Randy Moss Super Offense of the Vikes – Blown out by the Gmen and John Foxes D.
Phillip Rivers and LT in his prime – NOT
And the main fact most of the offense lovers miss is that the more you try to score, the more you open yourself up to TURNOVERS – which will be the death of any team. Ask Mike Martz…….
Defense wins Championships. That dynamic has not changed. Our D does not even meet MINIMUM standards right now, and we are going to take an undersized RB with our first round pick?
Cuz they realize
that the Colts defense basically sucks every year, but they still draft offense EVERY YEAR in the first round.
The Giants problem on defense is not talent, not holes..its HEALTH. If we’re talking about drafting a training staff for our defense……then that’s a lock.
But our defense needs to get healthy. Basically…that’s all. Obviously some defensive players are needed to be drafted, cuz that’s how you sustain success…by drafting.
But drafting defense in round one does not equal success. It could..but its not a direct correlation.
HEALTH…is a direct correlation. They ain’t goin NOWHERE if 9/10 of the team is as hurt as it was last year.

Really talent is not a problem?
the whole middle of the defense (DT, LB, S) was absolutely terrible last year and it won’t magically get better next year without doing nothing about it.

Mclaren
You can’t tell me that if we had a healthy KP, Alford, Canty, Sintim, Tuck, Ross, Pierce, Bernard, & Boley that our defense would have been much better. That’s 9 players on defense, and quite a few starters so. We have tons of talent on this squad but when they are all hurt what do you expect?
Other than Tuck and MAYBE KP none of those would've really made a difference in our record at the end of the year
by mclaren_is_the_best on Mar 23, 2010 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions
So what your saying is that seven of those players make no difference when healthy?
Not really sure what to say to that man.
And the Colts are pretty successful
with an average defense and a great offense.

So successful
that Peyton doesn’t even have a winning record in the playoffs (IIRC)
by mclaren_is_the_best on Mar 23, 2010 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions
Don't forget the 2 teams in the SB this year were both high powered offenses
and the Cardinals last year were in the SB, a high powered offense.
The Giants aren’t giving up 45pts a game next year..even if they draft 7 offensive players from 1-7 rounds.
They just aren’t…if they’re healthy.
We ain’t drafting health..we’re drafting rookies. So…….I doubt that simply drafting defense is gonna make the Giants not give up 45pts a game.

The Saints offense has been high powered for the last 4 years
yet they couldn’t even string together a winning season until they got Gregg Williams to run the defense. The cards barely made it to the post season because of their extremely weak division and then relied on Warner to beat teams. I know we all love Eli and what not but he is not anywhere near as good as playoffs Warner and I don’t want to count on him to score 45 points to win a game.

We don't have to score 45pts
we have to get healthy.

Is it personal between you guys or what?
Regardless of who’s right, at some point this tit-for-tat stuff is going to cross the silly line.
To the more rational of the two of you I say just don’t respond. Ridiculous comments stand by themselves, just like well thought out and supported ones.

Draft Day
I don’t see Jerry trading down he seems to prefer to stand pat and draft the best need players available at their pick. From everything I have read there is no sure thing at LB for a 4-3 def. I see Jerry taking the best DT or safety. I wouldn’t be surprised if the #1 RB is still available that he takes him. The only thing I am sure of is that Jerry has proven to be a great judge of talent on draft day so I am excited not worried.
