Mock Draft Time Part 2

The first part of my mock seemed to go over pretty well except for my Gerhart pick. I still stand by that pick, but I respect the dissenting opinions. This is a great community in that we can discuss these various opinions and all get a better understanding and appreciation of the game and the players who play it. This Part 2 of my mock will cover rounds 5-7. Doing a mock for these rounds is always dicey because so many variables have come into play it is very hard to guess who will be available. These are the rounds where the theory of best pick available really comes into play. There may be some player that you never thought about drafting, but he slipped too far not to take advantage of the value. We are going to assume that doesn't happen and I'm going to try to pick guys that I think would be a good fit and are projected at these rounds.

Round 5: Myron Lewis, Cornerback, Vanderbilt08lewismyron5_jr-785329_medium

I have to thank Free for exposing me to this player. After Free grabbed him in his version of the mock I looked at him further. I really liked what I found. This guy has one of the number one qualities that I look for (you've probably figured this out by my earlier selections) VERSATILITY. Lewis played corner in college but he has the size and skill set that he could play safety as well. There is a lot to like about this guy. He is big and strong to match up with TEs. He plays the run exceptionally well and has experience blitzing, we love that in NY.

I don't expect Lewis to come in and push anyone out of a starting gig, but he would add quality depth to the secondary. He could play safety and corner as needed. Our current 4th corner is a small player (Bruce Johnson). Depending on the personnel of the opposing team we could mix and match Lewis and Johnson as to who got Dime duties. I also believe Lewis' combination of size andspeed would be put to good use on special teams. At 6'2" 203 lbs running a 4.42 40 this kid could be a nasty gunner. When we lost Tyree we lost a great gunner. Hagan is ok, but I see plenty of room for improvement.

Round 6: Zoltan Mesko, Punter/Kickoff Specialist, Michigan

702138_medium

No, I'm not just making this pick so that people will like me again after I picked a RB in the 2nd round. We have serious questions in our kicking game that need answers. Our kickoffs are just pathetic. Tynes is a quality field goal kicker, but he simply does not have the leg needed to boom it on kickoffs. Feagles is a legend, the best directional kicker of all time, but he dropped off last year. With a defense that will be trying to find and redefine itself this season we need a kicking package that will give them less short fields. Zoltan Mesko is that package.

I'm not a fan of carrying multiple kickers or punters, which is why Mesko is such a great pick and worth a 6th rounder. Drafting Mesko would allow us to let Feagles go. Mesko would both handle punts and kickoffs while Tynes focused on being the best field goal kicker he possibly can be. We still only have to carry one kicker and one punter and all of our kicking problems are solved. Pair this guy with my new gunner I just snagged in round 5 and our kick coverage just became exponentially better.

Round 7: John Conner, Fullback, Kentucky

3505837_medium

My big beef with John Conner is he went and did too good of a job at the combine. Now he might go sooner. I'm going to hope the fact that less teams use a traditional fullback means he is still here for us. Here is what I love about Conner, he is an old school hard nosed fullback. He will pound up into that hole and do whatever it takes to blast the linebacker out. He has that ideal combination of size, athleticism, and mean streak needed to make all the blocks. Conner also holds up well in pass protection. Here is the icing on the cake that I think all Giants fans could get excited about, he has soft reliable hands. Yes Giants fans imagine a hard nosed blocking fullback that can catch too. Conner even has some ball carrying ability. He's not going to ever break off a home run or even get around the edge, but he could be money on that short yardage dive play.

I love Hedgecock for his blocking ability, but to say his hands are suspect would be an understatement. We bring in Conner to give Hedgecock some competition that is needed at the position. If Conner can show that he can block as well as Hedgecock while giving us improvements in all of the other categories we have ourselves a new fullback.

That concludes my mock draft. For the record I have placed myself in the big backs anonymous program and the first step is admitting you have an addiction, so yes I have an addiction to having big bruisers in the backfield.

Damn....

Well, I guess we can see what you’d like the Giants offense to be again!

…and I think that its probably a dream. I doubt that with Eli being what he is, and basically that he still has a lot of untapped potential…that they’re going back to that power running thing they used in 2008.

Actually, I think they’ve gotten the weapons, finally, for Gilbride to put in that Run and Shoot Oilers offense where they had 4 differenct WR (hmmm…Smith, check. Nicks, HAM…Barden?…BOOOM) make the Pro Bowl.

I mean..we still have it. Jacobs is still here.

I just think that if they get a RB, its gotta be a receiver. This is why I say Spiller if he’s there. He’s a good blocker as in chip blocker. He knows how to do it. And if we’re taking a back in the first 2 rounds…I’d rather see one that helps evolve the offense to the direction it seems to be taking.

I didn't mention

I fired Gilbride right before the draft :) Yes, I know I’m letting my bias toward a power running scheme influence my picks.

I know we are probably headed the way of the run n’ shoot because that’s what Gilbride really wants to be, but I wish we weren’t. I don’t think it is what is best for the Giants, and it’s not because I don’t have faith in Eli. I think Eli is the best play action QB in the league. That play action game is of course better with a solid run game. It won us the SB, but I know Gilbride will probably try to fix what isn’t broken. The only potential to hold it in check is TC’s theory that the NFL is about establishing the run and stopping the run.

I don't think a CJ Spiller, or a Jahvid best

pick means they’re going away from that.

They still have Jacobs, and AB^2 of course. I don’t see CJ Spiller as a Reggie Bush…I see him more of as a young Clinton Portis, or a slower Chris Johnson (not saying much…basically everyone is slower then him).

I like the power running scheme…but I think you need to completely be sold on it to run it. You gotta run it and keep running it to wear down the defense.

Meaning….with weapons like Smith, Nicks and HAM and Boss, as well as hopefully Becks and Barden…it would kinda be a waste.

I still think Jake and AB^2 all may have a role, but you know..there’s a reason these guys are picked when they were and CJ Spiller will be a first round pick. Its elite athleticism and gamebreaking ability.

With all the weapons the Giants would potentially have, they have gamebreakers..but don’t have to necessarily rely on it.

Spiller is good enough at blocking to be a third down back, as you seem to be sold on first. He’s also an excellent receiver, which I’m sold on, and would give Eli that safety valve that would take his game to potentially levels unknown.

I'm glad you're seeking help with your addiction...

Jacobs, Gerhart AND Conner (or Hedgecock), that’s A LOT of big backs! As in one or two too many. I could see a later round version of Hedgecock with hands, but I’m not sure the Giants would view that as a need at this point, considering that Hedgecock’s off year was largely due to injury. Granted he’s NOT a pass catcher, injured or healthy. But the only way I see the Giants going with a running back anywhere in the first five rounds is more in line with Free’s view, a gamebreaker speed/hands guy with explosiveness to try and do add the element to the backfield that Nicks did to the receiving corps. Bradshaw isn’t bad, but I think if they go running back other than as a bolt on addition with a defined role late, I think it’s gonna have to be someone more explosive than Bradshaw. I’m sure not gonna trash your pick of Mesko, whom I think gives the Giants versatility in dealing with both their punting and kickoff problems. I know kickers and punters aren’t usually guys you waste a draft pick on, but this guy does both, could have an immediate impact, and generally overlooked, punters and kickers are both long shelf-life positions. If you get a good one, you can be set for a decade and a half. Lewis is a player as well. As you said though, later rounds are tough to pick, as not only do you not know what other teams have done in the draft, you also don’t know what areas the Giants have already addressed earlier. Good food for thought, and best wishes on your recovery from brontobackitis ;-D

Time to draft multiple LBs

Just as we did last year with taking care of our Wr’s needs in the 09 draft with Nicks, Barden, etc., we shousl do the same this year with our biggest need-LB. Lets draft two, a high and mid round. For DT’s, lets draft two as well, mid and late. Thast four of our 7. Then with our remaining 3, Oline and safety. I would be happy with that.

Trade up for Suh or McCoy?

Our defense needs help. If we get a big guy up front who can rush the passer, maybe the secondary doesn’t have to stay with the receivers so long. Anyone for getting a gret DT?
