BBV Community Mock Draft: With 13th pick, 49ers select ...

Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa.

Selecting for the 49ers is 'RIPShea.' He writes:

The 49ers have two draft picks in the Top 20 in this year's draft (Thanks to the Carolina Panthers). Since this is one of the deepest draft classes in recent memory, Mike Singletary and Co.can afford to take the BPA with one of those picks. It just so happens the BPA is also a position of need as well.

"We were just waiting on one or two of our overall top targets to fall to our spot. I was a little worried with the Dolphins on the clock but they went in another direction. We are ecstatic about this kid" Singletary said.

San Francisco's biggest needs are OT, secondary, and ILB. They pass on Spiller, for now, because the coaches are very high on Glen Coffee as Frank Gore's change of pace partner. Singletary took a very hard look at Sean Weatherspoon to eventually take over for Takeo Spikes and form a monster LB corps which includes Patrick Willis but Bulaga is too good to pass up.

Bryan Bulaga and Joe Staley can play both tackle spots. I feel Staley is better suited as the RT and Bulaga starts at LT. With Alex Smith and David Carr at the QB spots the 49ers can't really afford to take a question mark OT (Trent Williams - struggled at LT this year after moving from RT. Anthony Davis - motivation? Hasn't reached potential). Bryan Bulaga is an NFL-ready offensive lineman and a top-10 talent.

Star-divide

My take: Another player off the board who would have drawn strong consideration from me had he been available for the Giants choice at 15. An excellent pick for the 49ers, who fill a need with a player who was surprisingly still on the board and should be an offensive line anchor for a long time.

Remember, to see explanations for previous selections click the highlighted player name in the table below.

Next up will be 'CCE718' with Seattle's second pick of the first round.

Good pick

Good pick

Kinda like if he got picked by the Giants, he’d be a RT which he’s probably better suited for. Nothing wrong with having potentially dominant bookends

most people

Think he’ll be fine as a LT. I think he is suited better there as well. Bulaga and Staley is a heck of a tackle combo.

by RIPShea on Mar 20, 2010 10:41 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I think he'd be a fine LT too

but his less then ideal arm length and nasty attitude say RT, probably an elite one.

Joe Staley is a very good LT too so I doubt they switch him.

Staley stays at LT

I doubt they move Staley also. Bulaga is a good pick here because he might be a good LT but a great RT. The 49ers would have solid bookends for pass and run.

I'm not trying to argue but

Obviously right tackle has been a bad spot for SF and Joe Staley can play right tackle. He’s a good left tackle but he isn’t an All-Pro. Bulaga can also play both sides but all signs say he’s a better fit at left tackle.

This is perfect because Staley can be that all-pro right tackle and Bulaga can be the same at the left tackle spot. If the 9ers have no plans to move Staley to right to draft Bulaga then they could go Trent Williams. Williams is a perfect fit at the right tackle spot but isn’t much up to the task of being a left tackle.

Bulaga is a very athletic LT and his footwork is amazing. If he woulda stayed for his Senior Year we’d be talking Jake Long or Joe Thomas.

Jake Long or Joe Thomas? You have got to be kidding.

Comparing Bulaga to those two is something that should be kept at arms length. Get it? Arms length?

Long and Thomas are Prototypical LT and Pro Bowl quality. Bulaga is anything but prototypical, has shorter arms and simply doesn’t hold up in the argumant.

He’s a great talent, but you’re saying that he would be a top 5 pick in 2011. I’m not buying it, and I think I won’t be the last to say that.

so arms length is what seperates lineman these days? not HOW they play?

Player Comparison: Jake Long. Bulaga doesn’t have Long’s arm length or height, but they are comparable athletically and play with great technique. I love the physicality they bring to the table. – Walter Football

I’m not an expert but the more I read on Bulaga by so-called experts relay these same messages. Again if the kid was a senior he’d be a lock for the top 3. Personally I don’t see any shot he lasts until San Fran’s pick.

by RIPShea on Mar 20, 2010 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

i mean he could

Very easily go fourth to the Redskins this year in a talent-rich draft. Keep dreaming about Hughes at 12.

by RIPShea on Mar 20, 2010 1:17 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Ooh, that's weak!

Comparing Bulaga to Thomas and Long and saying he would be a lock in the top 3 in 2011 is dreaming.

Taking a player that you have graded alot higher than everyone else and being stuck at 12 and taking him anyway isn’t dreaming, it’s the reality I was given.

Keep harping on Bulaga being a top 3. You’ll find it very lonely at that viewpoint.

Staley's a lot like Will Beatty. A very good athlete for his size

but not elite strength and that nasty streak to play RT, which Bulaga has.

And that’s a pretty good joke comparing him to Thomas or Long. Simply, no. He’s not in their class.

I’ve said before in response to people saying there is a clump of top tier tackles, no. There is a top tackle and that is Okung. What is unique this year is the big clump at just that next level down.

by bigblue777 on Mar 20, 2010 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Wondered how far he'd fall...

And was hoping he’d keep falling. Nothing to gripe about here.

by Cranky50 on Mar 20, 2010 11:48 AM EDT reply actions

Great value at #13. Hard to pass on.

I just struggle with taking a RT in the 1st. Earl Thomas or Spiller would be a good fit here as well, but maybe you can still have Spiller at 17.

Overall solid pick, considering the need. I just hate taking one of the top 5 Tackles and sending him to the right side.

Great choice

I think SF has the weapons on offense that it needs to succeed; they just lack a capable o-line to go with it (and maybe a QB…). Soldifying your bookends for years to come will make sure that Alex Smith has what he needs to be successful.

"The good teams don't come in and say 'could have'. They get it done. Alright? It's that simple."

Good pick

Was really hoping he would fall to 15…I know that many Seattle fans are in love with CJ Spiller. So much in fact he may go 6th. Surely he’s their guy at 14.

I liked Singletary’s statement…

I'm not a fan of the player

but I agree that they needed to improve that position – the right side of their oline is terrible
