Season prediction for 2010-2011 season
With the current acquisitions and offseason moves of the New York Giants here is my thoughts on what will happen from here on out. If the Giants were smart, and what I hope for, with the 15th pick we select Sean Weatherspoon LB from Missouri. The kid is a playmaker plain and simple who could project all across the LB front, and we all know that a LB is completely necessary to future success. I don't care if Spoon doesn't and/or can't play MLB because he is still a VERY vocal leader and brings youth, speed, and talent to the defense. Another comforting fact is that our defense was able to operate last year, though in a degree of sub-mediocrity, without the MLB calling the plays; Michael Boley was the play caller and did a fantastic job for us last season while not being 100% and having to make most of the plays on his own due to inadequacy surrounding him. I digress. I believe the Spoon pick is one that will bring this "new" defensive era into the present and will secure our LB corps for the future. There are OL and DB all over this draft who could be brought in and contribute so I really have no quams with letting Thomas/Berry/Mays slip out our hands in favor of Spoon.
On the idea of more free agents I would think the addition of these following FAs could make a solid impact but are not necessarily needed terribly:
RB Pierre Thomas: Lets face it. The running attack is not nearly what it should and used to be. Jacobs is now, and in my opinion going to stay, a hesitant runner who won't bring much more production than being a short yardage power back. Bradshaw is a workhorse who can be a valid option in the running game but is prone to being nicked up and is not big enough nor talented enough to carry the whole load. The young guns in Brown/Ware/Johnson are unproven yet show talent but that is nothing concrete. The addition of an established runner, aka Thomas, would give Bradshaw a partner in crime for the first half of the game and then Jacobs could come in with fresh legs to punish the winded defense.
DE Jevon Kearse: Alright I know Kearse has been a bit of a dud the past few years, but with proper coaching and placement with surrounding talent, what's stopping him from erupting into a secret behemoth again? There is no harm in adding veteran experience to a thin Front4 where he could even mentor the younger guys if worst comes to worst. I'm a very big fan of bringing in this veteran for a max 3 year deal.
OLB Pisa Tinoisamoa: One of the very few bright spots to the Bears' dismal defense last season was this young LB who is very versatile across the front. Tinoisamoa would be a rotational guy who brings assurance to the OLB depth and could even push for some decent playing time under new DC Perry Fewell.
Other Options:
DB Nick Harper
DB Ken Lucas
DB Fred Smoot
LB Joey Porter
WR Lavernaues Coles
WR Lance Moore
With all else said here is the outlook:
Offense- Pros: Great passing game if Eli is playing hot, rejuvenated running game
Cons: Gilbride is still OC, Eli's health and development, injured and aging OL
Defense- Pros: New DC meaning new system, young players, everyone starting out 100%
Cons: Lack of depth across the board, little to no run stuffers in front 7, secondary slightly improved yet prone to burning
Overall Record: 9-7 3rd in NFC East (ok I know this is low but as of now the G-Men are rebuilding and no one can deny that there are holes all over the team and the division is the best in football so we are kind of screwed here)
Thoughts?

Brave man
way too early to comment.
I don’t see Giants recruiting anything more in the FA market until after the draft. Let’s see how that goes before we jump ahead of ourselves. Also, a lot depends on how injured players come back after an off-season break. Hold on to your predictions because you have first-call on bragging rights if they are even close at this stage.
They've done studies you know, 60% of the time, it works everytime.
Well we don't know who gets drafted and the Giants do have more than
one draft pick so that should and will help with depth issues. Since it is soooo early no one can really tell. On top of that you don’t factor in any growth for our young WR core. Who knows if we won’t get pressure by the front 7? Too many questions to make a judgement
Is Osi on the chopping block?
Jet fan here.
Is it time to start exploring options at this point? Or do you guys wait to see what he looks like in camp? Is there a trade with the Jets involving Osi that would make sense?
Leon Washington would be intriguing… Would improve our weak special teams and boost a shaky running back corps.
I don’t think any trades involving Osi would happen unless we drafted DE depth early and Coughlin had a chance to evaluate them in training camp. At this point, if we lose Osi, we’d have Kiwi and Tuck, and… well that’s about it.
I wouldn't agree with signing ANY of those guys...
PT- 2nd round pick, not worth it. Plus, NO would never let him go, it’s probably just a contract -bargaining thing.
Jevon Kearse- Our guys are essentially vets now, even Kiwi’s been playing for 4 years. What’s keeping Kearse from having a monster season? His age. Defensive end is a game for young guys (other than Strahan, but he’s future HOF). Kearse hasn’t been good in a looooong time.
Pisa- I love this guy, but unlike Boley and Goff who are heavier than their listed weight, Tinoisamoa struggles to maintain even 230… Don’t we have enough problems against the run?
DB’s- Slow and old and injury-prone. And frankly? None of them are very good.
WR’s- We have an awesome young corps of WR’s with plenty of depth. I refuse to imagine Coles as a Giant.
Yeah gotta agree here...
and also with NJDuke below me. most of these guys are not on my, and hopefully the Giants radar, and we are not, i repeat, NOT rebuilding. We are built for now. All of our talent is young yet experienced, our avg. age is like 27. We are 1 YEAR REMOVED from being division champs, and 2 YEARS removed from rocking the ring. With little turnover from these rosters I’d say we are built to win now.
The Saints aren’t letting go of PT. they just let Mike Bell go, and they’re not leaving themselves starting next season with Reggie Bush as there starter. Plus, what has PT done that great? look at his career stats before we go gaga over him. he had an injury too this year if i’m not mistaken.
Jevon Kearse is done, and his career was a bust. never lived up to the hype from his Titans days.
Don’t know much about Pisa, that’s at least intriguing, but i haven’t heard his named mentioned anywhere, so i find it difficult to believe the bears are letting him go anywhere, especially with an aging core(urlach and Briggs).
Lito, Joey P, Coles? maybe if it was 2005. now they just roster filler.
once again folks, rumors of our demise are GREATLY exaggerated. We had ONE bad season. one. let’s not do our best impression of Chicken Little.
11-5. i don’t care who we draft. we’re better than we showed last year.
Rebuilding????
Yeah I would definitely say that the Giants are NOT rebuilding
+1 you are correct sir
plugging up some holes does not mean rebuilding. The foundation is there and is very very strong. there are issues that need to be addressed, but the signing of rolle fixed probably our biggest need. Whats left? LB of course. Could use some DL, OL. RBs are good for another year at least, WR corp is soon to be best in the NFL, Eli is the effin man. I really dont see too many things that are bad here.
i really dont understand why so many are so down on the gents already. get ready for a huge bounce back year. im pumped

I'd say maybe the Pros for the offensea and the pros for the defense...
basically disagree with every player on here.

Brooklyn,
I totally agreed with your first graf. I think maybe ‘Spoon = McClain (duck and cover) but then again, I’m no talent scout and if one of those safeties is BPA or better than Spoon/McClain they could grab a S no problem. Hell even a DT.
Yet I totally disagree with your FA analysis.
I don’t think we need a running back. We have 5 serviceable backs: 2 starters, 2 backups, and a question mark in Brown.
Taking Kearse would be anathema to the Giants M.O. … I don’t see them picking up spent veterans. And I don’t see Chi failing to re-sign Pisoaisoeisoa … not to mention I think we’re ok at OLB with Boly, Sintim, and backups.
I’d be happy with Spoon or McClain in the 1st as 1 will be there… S or DT or OL most of the rest of the way depending on BPA…
11-5 was a safe comment above I’ll say 12-4 (3-0)
You play to win the game!
LOL @ "Pisoaisoeisoa"
< 11-5

youre right i was being safe
I actually meant to say 11 wins or better. Anything less and I say we underachieved. Unless of course we go 9-7 and win the super bowl.

Too early
to make predictions like these especially since JR has proven he is very smart at drafting players. Also i think the only thing the giants need to rebuild is their additude. Last year they visably weren’t playing with the intensity they were in years before. I believe that will change this year bc Perry Fewell is said to be a very emotinal coach who will get the players fired up
I dont know about any of those personally
Maybe…….MAYBE…..MAYBE, Pisa like 2-3 yrs ago
But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!
We obviously have some holes to fill and need depth in other areas, but I would say we are far from rebuilding. Every team has at least a weakness or 2. I think its hard to assess exactly because part of the problem was Sheridan and he has been replaced. Another problem was injuries…God willing we are healthy this year. If Osi, Tuck, and Kiwi return to form that will go along way. A great pass rush covers a lot of problems.
No to these free agents
Prefer to build through the draft, get younger, not older and more injury prone. We have seen how injuries can derail a talented team in the past.
Injuries are a part of the game, but consider the Cowboys in ‘09. I believe Colombo missed a couple games(Doug Free came in and they didn’t miss a beat) but outside of him they were healthy the entire year. With a little luck(Ross, KP, Brown, etc. coming back strong) this is an elite team talent wise.
As far as predictions, I do believe the core talent on this team is still there. We really put a lot of stock in our dominant D-Line and down the stretch when they were ailing, we couldn’t make up for it.

WHAT???????????????
I disagree with everything your saying except Sean Weatherspoon

Herm Edwards
Has the Cowboys winning 13 games next year. He cited that the Giants aren’t a good running team. In my furious rage I turned off the TV. Does Herm Edwards have any clue how banged up we were last year? Doubtful…
Herm Edwards is a good coach
But what on earth does he know about winning teams or winners, this guy had like 20 picks in his last draft and i dont think any of them panned out. Also to say we dont have a running game is crazy we had 2 running backs with 2 ankles and 3 knees between them both….. so when healthy we are a different team, please believe that.
But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!
I'm mixed on your analysis
I don’t think we will be 3rd in the East, the Eagles are overrated and Eli managed to figure out their defense in the second game, the only problem is that Sheridan was possibly the worst DC ever hired, If they just stuck a corner on Jackson he won’t be burning us for 30yards per pop every drive. The cowboys were extremely lucky with injuries last year and their Oline will probably take another step back this year because of the age factor.
Also I don’t see a need for any of those FA pickups, they are all past it and I think were better off giving the chance to younger, stronger players.
I like Weatherspoon though, and agree that the giants aren’t going to be really good this unfortunately but neither will the other nfc east teams.

Im with you but
the sheridan was over blamed his coverages were sound but terribly eecuted like when Johnson bit on play action even tho he was in cover two and let Jackson ran right into the endzone………AR still almost got there might i add so his schemes were good but he wasnt a motivator of men like fewell and spags, couple that with an un healthy D and viola a highly ranked D in yrds but low in points given up
But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!
better than last year
I think we will be better than last year. I am hoping for 10-6, but it may be 9-7. The schedule is not easy. Lets say we split with cows and eagles, and sweep redskins. Thats 4 out of 6. We need to go 6-4 over rest. I think doable.
If we are healty and lets say the cows are hurt, you dont think its a close race?
WOW! I look a little stupid here..
Alright let me clarify some things and try to redeem myself…Firstly, I obviously chose the wrong word when using “rebuilding” in my analysis. When I said that I had pretty much the defensive issues in mind and let that dictate my thoughts so that’s where that came from. I am sorry to offend by saying that and I very much do not believe the Giants are a rebuilding team such as St. Louis or Detroit. Secondly, my free agent anaylsis was just players I believe would give a little bolster to the roster, not KEY people we need nor should absolutely pursue. I hope you guys don’t hate me as much now that I explained myself a little but I just called it as i saw it as of now. I love the Giants with every bit of my being so I would enjoy not being the forum idiot.
haha
you did get hammered a little bit on this one didnt you. its ok i got beat up for saying i wanted to trade our first and third for demeco ryans. a month or so ago. if ur a giant fan, your loved around these parts.
