Jahvid BEST - Player Available...
Jahvid Best might be the best player available when it is the Giants turn to draft at pick 15.
He's probably the #1 playmaker in the draft. A la Percy Harvin. Who fell a lot, if we re-did the 2009 draft, would be a top 5 pick.
And running back is a big question mark for us...Jacobs, Bradshaw, Brown are all coming off injury. Ware hasn't proven anything.
At the very least, Best, can be utilized like Reggie Bush. He had the fastest 40 time at RB. He can catch the ball out of the backfield, maybe even moved into the slot. If he didn't get hurt in 2009, his value would probably be even higher. (see the diff. between his 2009 and 2008 film)
I think our offense sorely needs a playmaker. A guy who, when he touches the ball, is a threat to take it to the house everytime. We really haven't had a guy in the backfield who was great in open space, off screens. And he could also run the deep route, a la Brian Westbrook.
Given, if McClain or Dan Williams are available...we might have to go with those guys...but i think we can still find good value at DT or LB in the 2nd/3rd round. I like Angerer...heard he has great cover skills...something u need more and more in this current pass-heavier NFL.

Reggie Bush is a bust
and Best himself is a huge question mark with the concussion.

Before last year he couldn't even reach a 4.0 ypc average over a season
Being a RB that can catch is nice and all but if you can’t run the ball at all you’re useless as a tailback and the defense will soon figure you out.

getting 8 million
from the super bowl champs.
good enough for them. good enough for me.
plus…best is more polished at running inside. can take contact better.

Not for my #15
I wouldn’t draft Best or Bush at #15. That type of player doesn’t warrant that draft value for me. A #15 better be a full time player not a gimmick for me.
Im not on this Train
and if Percy would have been top five, hakeem nicks would have to be #4, they had the same #‘s and hakeem played a little less. RB is not even on my radar in round one. it would be spiller if it was and even he’s not on my radar in round 1 based on need. If B shaw is healthy he is our playmaker out of the backfield other than that I personally think all we have is play makers on the offensive side of the ball and they are all only going to get better!
But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!
+1
everyone is writing off bradshaw already. kid played with two broken feet and a broken ankle and still made plays. i personally can not wait to see him play a healthy season. all he does is “step up and make big plays”

Bradshaw is an ass kicker
for me his defining play was absolutely ripping that handoff fumble away from ?Pierre Woods? that was an absolute game changer and one of the 5 or so miraculous plays that allowed us to win that super bowl

kid can’t stay healthy and thats in a reduced roll where hes only carrying the ball 15 times a game … his hands are also suspect which is a glaring weakness for an undersized shiftier back. He’s got talent and he runs hard but hes not a threat on screens , wheel plays , etc. Andre Brown has excellent hands but i dont know if he’ll make it back from that achilles so if the Giants do take a RB it should be late not early

I think you're talking about a different Bradshaw

I wouldn't say he "can't stay healthy"
Bradshaw had injuries from college catching up with him…which he never had surgery for untill now.
Are his hands suspect? I’d have to say yes, he’s no D. Ward, I recall a lot of heart-wrenching drops by 44 last season out of the backfield. But I do think he’s a threat on screens if he actually catches the ball, the blocks are executed, and he has 2 good ankles.

A few problems with this
Best isn’t like Bush in the sense that he doesn’t return kicks.
On top of that, he is a 2 down back because he struggles blocking on 3rd down passing situations.
Although Spiller struggles blocking as well, at least he is a proven kick returner as well.
And don’t let the “official” 40 times trick you. Spiller was simulcasted against Jacoby Ford and was with him step for step. His 40 time should’ve been in the 4.28 range, just like the “unofficial” times said.
points taken. but...
bush has a pretty big role in the saints offense. enough that they’d still pay him 8 million. and they just won the super bowl. but yes…he does return kicks very well. ask them if they’d pick him at 15.
best can also return kicks.
“Standout special teams player, earning first-team all-Pac-10 honors as a true freshman, as well as the J. Scott Duncan Award (Most Valuable Special Teams’ Player) by finishing second in the conference in kick return average (27.0) and posting 12 tackles and a fumble recovery as a gunner. Led the conference with 26.3 yards per kickoff return as a sophomore.”
i don’t know if i trust simulcast, or official numbers more…but i guess i’d have to research that issue more…but spiller won’t be available most likely…and best is still fast. and looking from college film, he’s definitely elusive and is a gamebreaker.
our offense…playmakers…i don’t really believe in any of our guys, yards after the catch, breaking it open big time. I feel like bradshaw doesn’t really have those to the house runs, given he doesn’t have that top speed. And Nicks is not that elusive/fast…and i don’t really trust manningham. Feel like some of those runs after the catch were partly luck.
will a DT play full time also? in rotation with a lot of guys we have…cofield, canty, alford
by TheTrueMANningIsELI on Mar 18, 2010 12:00 PM EDT reply actions
HUH???
Hakeem nicks is not that elusive!!!! are we speaking about the same guy here?? cant be!! but he is a playmaker so is manningham for sure and steve smith. Maybe we have two different views about playmaking but i think all of our guys are solid and nicks is just down right special. He gets it done.
But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!
hakeem is very elusive. very
possibly the nicest spin move ive seen from a giant in a while. i beleive he took one to the house after making the catch, spinning the shizz out of the DB, and running 60-70 yards for the 6. forget which game it was in tho

yea nicks is nice after the catch. and can make some moves…
but doesn’t have that top speed…can be caught from behind…
but i don’t think he’s SUPERB…in open space…off screens and stuff
yea…
i just wish we had a guy like that…who can change the game in one play.

a homerun hitter would def be nice
but i think everyones getting a little too down on the current rbs too early. sure they were hurt all year and played like crap, but lets give them one more year. if BJ and AB both get hurt again and play like crap again (more BJ then AB on the play like crap front) then i say in the 2011 draft we try to get a homerun hitter like Spiller or Best. not sure who that would be but i just dont think its a galring need right now.
the wrs are set and even though it is still very early in these guys careers working together, i think they all complement each other perfectly. SS12 is obivously the move the chains possesion receiver. hakeem is your tough, strong YAC playmaking WR, manningham is ur speed threat and make u miss run for 6 wr (if he can learn to run routes and can keep his focus long enough to actually catch the ball) and hopefully ramses will become that big red zone target my main man Plax used to be. Boss is just a beast. lets see what beckum can do. IMO, each WR is a definete playmaker, and together all thier different skill sets and styles make IMO possibly the best young WR corp in the NFL (colts wrs r nice). we have a ton of playmakers on offense. almost too many mouths to feed.
we got playmakers on this offense.. tons of them actually.

I don't think that we NEED a home run hitter
a lot of successful offenses have went by without one, most of the times those skinnier guys go to teams with bad QB’s and no WR.
I think for our team we need a more consistent guy that can run between the tackles and get us 3 yards when we need 2.

someone like Ryan Matthews would be a better fit
by mclaren_is_the_best on Mar 18, 2010 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Ryan mathews will be taken by the chargers
But if Best is there in round 2 when we are on the clock he is mighty tempting.
Toby Gerhart
There is a player you can count on to get the yards you need. I’d also much rather have a guy I can count on to get the yards I need to keep the chains moving rather than a guy who might take it to the house on a small percentage of plays, but won’t be able to get tough yards and will probably lose yards on many plays.
I can dig that!
might be a good pickup especially if B. Jake goes dwn again
But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!
IF our top 2 running backs get hurt AGAIN
well, I say you can’t go ahead and have 3 starting RBs as a contingency. If you lose your top 2, you rely on Ware and Brown and Gartrell or whomever makes the team. And you count on them for 3.0 YPC, hope for 4, and lean on the pass. A lot of teams have had success offensively with the running game more of a token to keep defenses honest. It’s not who we want to be, but at the same time we don’t want to lose our 1&2 rbs… and shoot, it might play to Gilbride’s pass-happy strengths
You play to win the game!

TrueMan
it seems to me like you put alot of stock in speed. Speed kills….drafts. it’s not the end all be all that you might think it is. A playmaker doesn’t have to be the fastest guy on the field, if he’s truly a playmaker, he’ll make the last guy miss like he made the first guy miss. Believe it or not, Larry Fitzgerald is not burner quick. Yet he is considered one of the best in the game. Same for B. Marsh in Denver. And on and on.
Go to YouTube and look up nicks’ highlights from last year. he did his thing in open space(as did Manningham). And how quickly we forget what he did with the screen pass against KC too.
you would be talking about the second Eagles game
where he juked one defender and spun off the second one to take it to the house. One of at least 3 i can think of where he took it to the house.
Why are we so worried about the offense i wonder? We were ranked in the top 10 in scoring, it just got lost in the wash because no one cares that you scored 30 if your defense gave up 40. Our only problem on the O is red zone scoring, and O-line. The fomer can be solved by better play calling in the red, and the latter can be addressed in the draft. Other than that, all this spiller, best talk is just ridiculous to me.
I still laugh when ppl say we don’t have playmakers on O. What team was I watching then?
I'd take Best at #46
his injury concerns are higher then that of CJ Spiller, and Spiller’s a better playmaker as it is.
I’d take a look at Best in round 2…definitely not round one tho.
Master of the squeegee
not gonna be there
Best’s def. not gonna be there…prob be taken in the 20s.
Spiller will prob. be gone too…and i actually think Best is better. more moves in the open field?
as does http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/front-office-total-access-stats.html&position=rb
and here…it also says best is a good blocker…which i’m not sure is true…
by TheTrueMANningIsELI on Mar 18, 2010 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions
see your point of value
just think if there is no mcclain….no williams…
where’s the value there…
there is no other playmaking RB available…
we can still get decent DT or LB at 46…
by TheTrueMANningIsELI on Mar 18, 2010 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Best's injury concerns are too high for me
and unlike Spiller, Best usually disappeared in Big games (this year..Oregon and USC, last year USC).
Spiller’s best games this year were TCU, Georgia Tech, Florida State.
I like Best, really do, but #15 is just way too high for him. If he didn’t have that major concussion I think it’d be a possibility, but I highly doubt it.
Best is not going in the 20’s either. Ryan Matthews is the 2nd best back in this draft, and the only reason he’s behind Spiller is that he’s not all that good a receiver or blocker.

i can understand that
percy harvin was also a risk factor last year due to injury…
given it’s a different case in concussion….i would def have my doctors and experts doing research about the injury tho
but from where i’m sitting…i’d roll the dice…
esp. if there’s no spiller, we could trade down…or there really isn’t a guy we like at DT or LB.
by TheTrueMANningIsELI on Mar 18, 2010 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions
There’s more then just DT or LB. And trading down isn’t an easy thing to do.
If McClain doesn’t fall, I’d much rather have Brandon Graham, Derrick Morgan, Earl Thomas, Joe Haden, Trent Williams, Brian Bulaga or even Mike Iupati.
Best just ain’t worth it. Even if they trade back, I’d rather get a few other players, like Nate Allen.

every mock draft ive seen has best being taken in the second
i like the guy just not at 15
Jahvid Best is a great talent but in the NFL RBs aren’t worth taking high because you can always get a good one in the later rounds. If the Giants do pick an offensive player early it should be a tackle. They need a RT and contrary to the Best Available Defensive Player theory picking a stud at RT will help you D. The Giants run game slipped last year because of age and ineffectiveness on the O-Line … if you get a guy like Trent Williams of Brian Bulaga you’ll be able to extend drives , keep your defense off the field , and win the field position game.
by TheBXRepresenta on Mar 18, 2010 12:54 PM EDT reply actions
it is possible to get a good RB later on…
but it is hard to find a true playmaker…who is a threat to take it to the house every time he touches the ball.
there’s not many in the NFL right now…which to me makes them more valuable…
yea…i just think our O-Line is fine. yea it slipped last year.
but beatty i think is ready to step up.
snee is a monster. diehl can move anywhere.
o’hara is the C.
seubert is only 31.
mckenzie was hurting last year…
i think we have more pressing needs…
by TheTrueMANningIsELI on Mar 18, 2010 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions
i mean you can get a bust OT in the 1st round too.
u can find a good OT late in the draft too.
i think the whole RB thing might be overdone now…
it’s not like he’s a top 10 pick…so money won’t be that bad…
by TheTrueMANningIsELI on Mar 18, 2010 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions
I dont care what 14 players
are taken ahead of him, Best wont be the BPA at 15. I wouldnt mind him at 46 but def not 15. And I think he may still be there at 46.
yup.
Him or Ryan Matthews at #46 I think would be too much value to pass up.
If we don’t go Spiller Rd 1, and either are there in round 2 I’d have no problem with either.
either way, I’d rather get a Derrick Morgan or Earl Thomas or Trent Williams at #15 (non-Insane McClain of course)

so our answer
is to get another rb coming off of an injury season? Sorry man can’t see the Giants even looking at this guy in rd. 1.
yeah man
One of the few things I disagree with Free about. I think the Giants are stacked at RB and gaping on D.
BPAEQBTEWRaRB!
You play to win the game!
I think they are too
Until Jacobs, Bradshaw and Andre Brown get hurt (not too sure on the Brown part…). I’d take bets…but I’d rather not bet against the squad (even if its easy money…)
