BBV Community Mock Draft: With 9th pick, Bills select ...

Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee.

Drafting for Buffalo is my good friend and golfing buddy "TheGreek." He writes:

This is a tough position for the Bills. Needless to say, the team has a lot of holes, and with Jimmy Clausen off the board at least one of those areas of need will have to wait. With the decision to switch to the 3-4 defense, the Bills are in dire need of personnel on the defensive side of the ball, particularly at nose tackle. There are also needs on the other side of the ball at both wide receiver and along the offensive line. Even though new coach Chan Gailey made a "name" for himself on the offensive side of the ball, he is trying to put his stamp on both sides of the ball.

With all this in mind and with the depth of quality offensive linemen available in this year's draft I have the Bills taking Tennessee's NT Dan Williams. This pick fills a huge need, as Williams can walk in and start from Day 1. It also allows the Bills the option of picking a tackle in Round 2. This may be a little high for Williams, and I could definitely see the Bills trying to trade down, especially if Clausen is off the board, but without anyone on the roster prepared to anchor the line of this new defense, Williams is the pick here.

Star-divide

My take: I agree with 'Greek' that the Bills would really love Clausen to be here. Buffalo has been trying to find a real quarterback for years now, and if Clausen isn't there this likely won't be the year they find one. Williams is not the sexy pick in this spot, but the Bills are transitioning to the 3-4 and he is the most talented nose tackle on the board. So, the pick makes sense. My real question for 'Greek' is this, though. When are we playing some golf, my friend?

Going to a 3-4 like Buffalo apparently is

then getting a NT like Big Dan Williams?

Good pick.

I’d probably wait for the NT in round 2 as there seems to be some value there. Buffalo’s OL stinks too, and with Bulaga right there, seemed like a better pick. Either way the trenches need to be bolstered.

Too high for Williams

Free is right. Go o-line with this pick, maybe take Terrence Cody in the second.

Cody?

Ugh! Cody is a huge gamble. I don’t want to go anywhere near the guy. He could eat himself out of the league w/in a couple of years.

I was saying the same thing...

till he checked in at 349lbs at his pro day.

That’s about 100lbs in 2 years, 20 of them (as far as listen weight goes…Tebow lord knows how much he weighed actually in that National Champ game).

Big risk, yes. Supreme talent..also yes. He may have avoided the Waffle House long enough to be drafted at the end of round 1. I doubt he lasts past the Chefs in round 2.

too much of a risk for round 1

I’d be really surprised if anyone takes cody in the first round.
IMO, 1st round picks shouldnt carry that much risk….

by NYG_Slater on Mar 18, 2010 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

this is true

if it actually happened, Jason Pierre Paul, Sam Bradford, Bruce Campbell, Taylor Mays and maybe Tony Davis..would all be 2nd round picks.

I doubt most of those dudes are 2nd rounders, Bradford may be the 1st overall! (Don’t do it Spags!!!)

i'd argue

that the risk Cody carries far outweighs (har har) the risk of drafting those guys. But your right….it’s all relative and it only takes 1 GM to roll the dice and pray.

I agree..

with late first round, especially with his motivation questioned, Iggles anyone?

by Great Gatsby on Mar 20, 2010 8:22 AM EDT up reply actions

I can't really argue with the pick or the logic

They are (gulp) also a possibility for McClain, although they just signed Andra Davis. I see them with an offensive tackle though, their line is probably worse than the Raiders.

Ed...

Will we get any additional picks made public this evening? And you mentioned that maybe there would be a second round, maybe not. If there can’t be a second round, how about going through at least until the Giants pick in Round 2, which would be of more impact to most of us than who New Orleans takes at #64?

by Cranky50 on Mar 18, 2010 4:25 PM EDT reply actions

Don't see what the rush is

At his current rate of 3 picks a day, we’ll be done with the second round within 3 weeks. Don’t see what the rush is.

by Charles L on Mar 18, 2010 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey, I'm all for a full second round....

I was under the impression that it was just “iffy” at this point, and 1 1/2 rounds is still better than one, but I agree, nowhere near as good as two.

by Cranky50 on Mar 18, 2010 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Well...

the man does make a good point..

I think they go OLine here

I really doubt Bulaga slips by Buffalo.

As for a NT, i think Linval Joseph would fit the bill nicely.

by NYG_Slater on Mar 18, 2010 4:27 PM EDT reply actions

Agree it's too high

and with Buffalo’s glaring needs, the value pick would have been OT, with Bulaga and Williams still available and take Cody or Cam Thomas in the 2nd rd. Their top need is a franchise QB, but if they don’t move up Clausen will probably not fall to them and there are a few interesting prospects at the position later on. Brohm looks like he’s the guy they’re going with right now.

NT Prospects
Rd. 1 Williams
1-2 T. Cody(Even with the negatives, a good coach could get alot out of him)
    2-3 Cam Thomas
    3-4 Linval Joseph

I read something intriguing the other day about the interest the Dolphins are showing in Jeff Owens. It would appear that the MIA staff has spent alot of time on him and look to pick him up as an athletic NT in later rounds. I would be skeptical except Parcells picked up another low round prospect who has started for him for alot of years already. His name? Jason Ferguson.

If not for that little snippet, I’d be screaming at my computer right now as Williams would have been my pick for the Phins in this mock.

Go Brohm!

Brohm was one of my favourite college QBs to watch play the game. I’m looking forward to seeing him get a chance with the Bills to do something at the next level. He came into a bad situation in Green Bay. I hope Buffalo is a fresh start.

Of course

I always try to do that to help move things along.

I was surprised by this pick

but it can happen, he is a good player and fills a need

Weird....Giants sign Aussie rules Punter???

Yahoo is reporting some guy named Jy bond, 30 y.o. has been signed as a punter.

by Cranky50 on Mar 18, 2010 6:13 PM EDT reply actions

Not a bad pick

However Clausen is going to fall to this spot IMO. That said if your building a 3-4 Defense starting with a NT is a wise decision.

by wangstu13 on Mar 18, 2010 7:06 PM EDT reply actions

From what I've read and heard so far, you could be right.

Buffalo can’t pass on Clausen, but there’s just too much wrong with this team. Add to that the switch to 3-4 and you need 2 drafts to make the necessary moves.
