BBV Community Mock Draft: With 7th pick, Cleveland selects ...

Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State.

Playing the role of Cleveland GM Mike Holmgren is 'Great Gatsby.' We wonder if 'Gatsby' donned a Holmgren-esque mustache while making this selection. Anyway, he writes:

Our feeling as an organization is that we have a few needs we would like to address as we move forward. With that in mind, one of the needs is to get more play makers. We feel Dez Bryant is one of the best play makers in the year's draft, and we hope he can be the that type of player.

(Sidenote: For the readers on BBV, if the Browns didn't already have Josh Cribbs, would have taken C.J. Spiller here).

Star-divide

My take: Interesting choice. With Sam Bradford and Jimmy Clausen off the board, quarterback is not an option. Browns would probably love Clausen here, but not in this draft. No Cleveland receiver caught more than 34 passes in 2009, so receiver is not a bad idea. Many experts think if they can't grab a quarterback, the Browns would look to upgrade their defense with cornerback Joe Haden. But, what do we know?

Remember that you can read explanations for prior selections by clicking on the highlighted player name.

The Oakland Raiders will be next, with 'Hoyadestroya85' playing the role of Al Davis.

Ed

Have we stopped with the poll?

They drafted WR last year and I would be inclined to give them this season to develop.

I would have the Browns going either Haden, Thomas, McClain or even Kindle as they traded WImbley to the Raiders.

Kinda seems like Ed puts in the poll at random points…

Seeing as all those guys you mentioned are in extremely deep positions this year, and all of them except Haden would be a reach at this point (Haden would’ve been my choice), Dez Bryant isn’t too impossible.

From what I know of Man-gina and Holmgren though, I don’t think they put too much stock in WR. Mangini obviously only coached the Jets for a couple years, but they didn’t draft a WR then.

Holmgren, of course, runs a textbook West Coast Offense. That calls for short, precise routes from smaller quicker WR’s, right? Doesn’t seem like Dez Bryant’s kind of game.

Just asking?

How did Jerry Rice look in a West Coast offense? My other two options were off the board,
and the receving corps has no playmakers, that was the basis of my pick.

As I mentioned

they took 2 WR in round 2 last year – Robieskie hardly played. Was it they were no good or was it the QB situation?

That is why I would give them another year to see if they improve with Delhomme.

I just see the Browns with bigger needs on D than WR.

I'm old and forgetful, apparently

My bad, forgot all about the poll. I will go back and add it.

week year for WRs....

this will benifit Dez, I would not want to be a team looking for a WR this year, which makes me happy that we got Nicks last year.

…I think when all said and done, Demaryius Thomas (GT) might be the best WR in this draft, but he will need a little bit of time.

Dez gets a bad rep for talking to Deion

but that’s BS. Also not helping himself with the offseason either. Preseason mocks had Dez in the top 3 picks.

Obviously, he’s a bit of a mystery as you don’t really know if he would’ve Taylor Mays or Brandon Spikes’d his final year.

I saw Andre Johnson when I saw Dez in college…so whoever gets him, is getting a legit beast mode WR. He ain’t DHB….he’s more like Hakeem Nicks except faster (he’s got the same freakish mits that Hakeem has)

I think the “Dez Bryant situation” is similar to the Randy Moss one when he was drafted, Dez may slip to the 20’s. Not saying he’ll be as good..but he’s an elite prospect.

As for the pick, in a pretty deep WR class(just not a bunch of 1st rounders…but the 2-4th are LOADED with talented WR) and Cleveland’s secondary BLOWS.

I think they go with Haden or I’ve been hearing rumblings of Earl Thomas.

About Hoya and the Raiders

Does he pick the best player for the Raiders to take, or does he take who he thinks Al Davis would take?

You play to win the game!

Last year

Hoya guessed the Raiders would take DHB!

Has to be OT and Ed will reveal all soon!

by G Fan in England on Mar 18, 2010 8:28 AM EDT up reply actions

so

he should be in the mind of Crazy Al and not picking as a good GM.

TEBOW?

You play to win the game!

by Simms-McConkey on Mar 18, 2010 8:30 AM EDT up reply actions

He can do both

he picks OT B Campbell who is the athletic freak but is also likely to be overwhelmed at the NFL level!

I dont,

"I'm not a scratch golfer. I don't know how to bowl. I can't read the stock market. Hell, I have a hard time rememberingmy wife's cell phone number. But I can call 'Flip right double X jet 36 counter naked waggle at 7 X quarter' in my sleep" - Gruden

by I_Formation27 on Mar 18, 2010 8:37 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

This could happen

But my guess is that Thomas or Haden get picked here. I also agree that Robiskie and Massaquoi (spellcheck) well get the bulk of the targets, which will obviously turn into INT’s unfortunately for them.

it'll be

Haden. the entire browns hierarchy was at the florida pro day. WIth haden putting up respectable numbers, he’s their guy.

by NYG_Slater on Mar 18, 2010 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

could you imagine this

Al Davis in a fit of rage after seeing the fast wr taken just before his turnbegins frothing and steaming….this condition is worsened when his staff insists that that fast kid from the pot head country(Usain Bolt) isn’t going into the NFL. Now in a blur of anger Davis attempts to pick “number 48”(Jimmy Johnson) again he is told no. Suddenly the Raiders war room cam goes to static…. when it comes back online there is only 1 figure left standing/levitating in the room and he selects….

Ed,

I hope you can re-post or link us to this mock draft a day or 2 before the real thing, I would love to compare

Good idea

I will post the completed table. Still not sure we are going to go a second round. We’ll see.

I think they have to give their current WR's a chance

Nobody will look good with Quinn throwing him the ball and especially since Quinn himself isn’t getting any time in the pocket

by mclaren_is_the_best on Mar 18, 2010 12:04 PM EDT reply actions

It will be Haden come draft day

and that would have been the right pick. A later round WR wouldn’t be out of the question, but you have to get your glaring weaknesses taken care of first.

Yea

I like this pick, or a S/LB. I don’t why some mock drafts always have clevland selecting a cornerback. They have a good starting corner in Eric Wright. they also have a good safeties. their secondary problems are overratted in my opinion. Their defense just lacked direction(like ours), they have the talent there.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they pick mcclain or a pass rushing OLB other than Dez Bryant

by Nfpdawg on Mar 18, 2010 3:33 PM EDT reply actions

I think the Browns have to let their receivers develop

I see Haden as the pick here. Just my two cents though
