Inside linebacker Brandon Spikes probably ran himself out of first round, and maybe second round, consideration today. He posted an unofficial 5.01 40-yard dash at the Florida Pro Day.

Holy moly.

Peyton’s faster than him…that’s saying something.

apparently he “stiffened up” at the 30 yard mark.

eitherway, thats a horrible time. Could drop to the 3rd.

Bad time

But expected and i think he can do better but 40 time is rather worthless for mike backers.

But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!

Ok now!

Let us not make fun of FB because his favorite player is slower than he is.

is not Free’s favourite player!

yeah he was

he commented in another chat LMAO, he hates spikes and spikes didnt help himself at all today

But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!

It was to be expected

He misses a lot of tackles on film because he relies too much on athleticism and it, um, bails him out LOL. He has great instincts and hes a good tackler, just too slow and unathletic. He’s the anti-weatherspoon (besides the fact they are both good tacklers)

Damm,

I could smoke a pack of Malboro’s and run a 40 faster than that! Free has been saying how slow this guy is for months.

3rd round

if mcclain doesnt fall to 15, this Spikes is there when the gents 3rd rounder comes along.. do you take him???

i dont want to agree with you (and Free) but i do

ive been on the spikes bandwagon since October and its all starting to collapse on me. especially with the crop of other MLBs available in the late rounds i have to let it go.. i am no longer a brandon spikes advocate. this 40 time/complete lack of effort has really turned me off on him. i jus like how nasty and mean he played come game time and i strongly beleive that nastiness is something the Giants D sorely needs, but that lack of speed just wont do in the NFC Beast

it would all depend what pills he needs to make him faster. The Blue ones, the red ones or the little greenies.

Hey Free ...

what about Plax’s question ? I got the impression from your past posts that you wouldn’t object to Spikes in something like the 3rd round, but were totally against a # 15 or even late first round for him if we trade down.

by Shofner85 on Mar 17, 2010 3:39 PM EDT reply actions

I dunno man...

While I don’t think a MLB’s 40 time is all that big of a deal…there’s a limit.

I’d rather have Micah Johnson if we’re going for a big LB who ran a slow 40, cuz Micah had an excuse (he was hurt). And no, the rain didn’t hurt Spikes, it didn’t hurt anyone else….

I’d rather stick with my final plan regarding Spikes, avoid in all rounds.

Cuz in the 3rd, Give me Jamar Chaney or Donald Butler

In the 4th, Give me Pat Angerer or even Micah Johnson if Angerer is gone.

…just not at all. I’d rather not see Lesean McCoy burning this guy constantly.

If he had an acceptable 40 time ...

(and what would that be ?) would you still pass on him at the appropriate value round ? My guess is he’ll use the ‘he "stiffened up" at the 30 yard mark’ thing to say he was hurt, and try and run a 40 some other time between now and the draft. Just curious if there are other factors that have you thinking he should be avoided (I don’t really spend much time evaluating the college guys, so I’m at a big disadvantage on this one).

by Shofner85 on Mar 17, 2010 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I said he's slow before this

and that’s why I’d pass on him.

An “acceptable” time for me, is around the 4.7-4.85 range and if your at 4.85 you’d better be very quick and play fast…which I don’t see at all from Spikes.

There’s just so many others I’d rather take over him in each round.

So yea, Pass.

4.7 to 4.85

Damb I run a 4.8 and I’m 54. I’ll do the job and wont cost as much.

by jerseyjoehaven on Mar 18, 2010 5:02 AM EDT up reply actions

hasnt Spikes run a faster 40?

This isnt his only time running a 40, I know he has run under 5 in the 40 in past……could this of just been a bad day? (i have seen on multiple scouting sights that he has run a 4.7 40) yes he is clearly not the fastest linebacker in the draft, but he was never known for speed. I can tell you one thing, he did not look that slow playing in the SEC.

by NJDuke on Mar 18, 2010 6:36 AM EDT up reply actions

I've seen his 40 be "projected" that high

but a 5.00 40 is molasses.

I dunno where he didn’t look that slow in the SEC…I’ve been saying Spikes is slooooow all year based on the 5-6 games I’ve seen this year.

Kinda seemed like he had the ’speed" of a defensive lineman..and hey!! He does!!!!

…actually, that’s a disservice to some DL’s in this draft, plenty are actually faster then Spikes (Carlos Dunlap for instance)

I dont know where they got it from....

http://www.fftoolbox.com/nfl_draft/profile_display.cfm?prospect_id=1627

Im not saying he is fast, Im just saying he didnt get to Florida, start for them, become a first team All-American, and become a captain of a National Team defense without being a good football player, isnt that what you like, not getting caught up in 40 times and the combine circus?

by NJDuke on Mar 18, 2010 7:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes...I do like that.

I’m not getting caught up in the 40 time…I know Spikes was slow waaaay before he did the 40 time.

Unless he’s got an under the table deal with the Giants that they’d take him in the 3rd round…and that’s why he “tanked” his 40 time..based on the fast 40’s the rest of the team ran…….

Basically confirms my idea that the rest of Florida’s D was fast, not Spikes.

I don’t see him play fast. He plays like he runs a 5.03

Yep no motivation

40 time at MLB is nonsense but he has to try, i still believe in the kid, how fast you get to the ball is my thing. the time will not be reflective of his actual play in the NFL, cmon i dnt think he is slower than an O lineman haha but he is bargaining himself out of the top rounds……..probably what JR or any team who likes him wants, this way they can snatch him later but he is going to have to have good intervies because those who love 40 times and use them to represent on field speed when chasing someone will be extremely dissapointed.

But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!

Hey lets not totally throw him under the bus

he bettered his time his second run.

10:00 a.m. — Jermaine Cunningham will not run today. Spikes runs a 5.0 flat on his second run.

by ryanwk628 on Mar 17, 2010 4:05 PM EDT reply actions

Still bad

but like i said i dnt think most of the top NFL MLB’s right now can even run a fast 40 and it doesnt matter but its his mental im worried about he has to show up and try harder for the scouts and people who came out.

But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!

by Blue Gates on Mar 17, 2010 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

WTF?
10:35 a.m. — No one seems to have a great sense of exactly how fast Brandon Spikes ran today. I’ve heard anywhere from 4.85 to 5.01. With his playing ability, anywhere in the 4.9s should guarantee him a place in the first round.

by ryanwk628 on Mar 17, 2010 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

WTF??????????????

I am looking and i see they have him at 4.76-4.96, last time i dont check on things my self………look how quickly people jumped on the band wagon…..LOL Free, Sunlion & Ed are using their powers for evil smh…………………just kidding please dnt take it seriously i dont want another warning

But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!

by Blue Gates on Mar 17, 2010 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions

If its 4.76, that's fine

4.96 or 5.03, I don’t draft him at all.

Even so, his other drills were pretty bad. I’d still avoid

by FreeBradshaw on Mar 17, 2010 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea they have a bunch of conflicting reports

dont know bout the other drills but NFL.com has him as the top performer in the 3 cone at the combine, that has to be worth something! all in all either you love him or hate him i have you down on the hate side and me down on the love side LOL

But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!

by Blue Gates on Mar 17, 2010 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm more disappointed that Cunningham didn't run.

That’s really a player (aside from Haden) that I’d want on the Giants.

Look, we can all talk about game film, combines, pro days and natural talent, but...

the game of professional football at the NFL level requires hard work, dedication, tons of preparation, desire, fire in the belly and an organized approach to even get on and stay on a roster.

Nothing, and I mean nothing, Spikes has shown leads me to believe that he posesses these necessary qualities. That tells me he has “BUST” written all over him.

As a matter of fact, I believe he needs to be knocked down a few notches to see how he responds. If a team gambles on him in the 4th round(although I doubt he goes that low), maybe it gets into his thick head that he needs to step up or be practice squad filler. Otherwise he is never going to excel in the league.

Good point ...

Reminds me of Pierce keeping a list of all the LB’s drafted ahead of him and crossing each one off after they were out of the NFL. A marginal talent physically, he definitely used that as motivation, and combined with great football instincts was a really effective LB for quite awhile.

Brandon Spikes is sooooooooo slow....

that he just figured out that he blew it.

by sunlion333 on Mar 17, 2010 8:20 PM EDT reply actions

good point Shofner...

I have heard a lot of people on this sight talk about how speed isnt everything and a 40 time means nothing, but everyone is jumping all over Spikes. He picked the wrong day to have a bad day, but I think some team is gonna benifit from him having this bad day. Ray Lewis, Peirce, Urlacher…..are these guys considered speed linebackers? He played in the SEC and put up good numbers, he cant be that slow.

side note: anyone see that Tom Coughlin watched the Tim Tebow workout in person, I found that interesting.

by NJDuke on Mar 18, 2010 6:42 AM EDT reply actions

40 Time Doesn't Matter

What matters is 10 yd time, BURST. Its the diffence between being QUICK and being FAST.

Nobody expects a LB to catch a WR or RB once he is by him. The point is to read, react and make the play around the line of scrimmage. Cut off the runner by accelerating quickly and getting there to make the play.

I think more coaches look at the first 10yds of the 40 with most positions, and ignore the rest.

by dubsrub on Mar 18, 2010 11:33 AM EDT reply actions

problem is...

he didn’t do the others well.

He’s molasses.

I woulda though that a downtrodden Antonio Pierce would scare peoples away from a dude like this…I guess not.

Pat Angerer’s a better all around athlete then Spikes…but why isn’t he mentioned as being better? Angerer made 3x the plays in his Jr and Sr year then Spikes did his whole 4 years.

Is it cuz Angerer’s 6"0 240, white and plays in the Big 10?

Master of the squeegee

by FreeBradshaw on Mar 18, 2010 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

No, it’s because he ISN’T anywhere near as good on tape

It doesn’t matter what conference you play in or how tall you are (it’s even better to be shorter for tacklers anyway), its because Angerer sucks

by mclaren_is_the_best on Mar 18, 2010 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Dissapointing

but I’d like to point out a few reason why he can still be a decent player.

1. he had 4 pick sixes during his college career so he can play in a normal zone
2. 40 time is useless for a linebacker
3. He could be a 2 down player and we can switch him with another LB that is faster on 3rd down if he cannot cover anyone at all in training camp
4. On tape he is still better than any LB in the draft not named Rolando

by mclaren_is_the_best on Mar 18, 2010 11:42 AM EDT reply actions

Spikes was surrounded by talent

I think he would look far less impressive on game tape if he wasn’t surrounded by such talent (assuming you even find his game tape impressive to begin with). That really covered him from having to be a great player. Guys like Spoon who play great while surrounded by meh players are more impressive to me.

by bigblue777 on Mar 18, 2010 11:51 AM EDT reply actions

Tell me the name of the other linebackers from florida that are first round picks. You can do the same with DT’s that are going in the first round from there after that.
