BBV Community Mock Draft: With 5th pick, KC selects ...
Eric Berry, S, Tennessee.
Playing the role of General Manager for the Chiefs is 'ronjohnson.' He writes:
Eric Berry has that rare combination of elite speed and strength that will make make him a perennial All Pro at safety for the Chiefs. KC General Manager Scott Pioli knows that defense wins championships. Good pass defense has become paramount for success in the NFL today. Just look to their AFC West rival San Diego Chargers and the importance of a talent like Berry in the middle making plays becomes obvious. Berry is the defensive leader and ballhawk the Chiefs defense desperately needs. He is a dominant safety who can stuff the run and can also cover elite receivers. By forcing turnovers with fumbles and interceptions, he will help the Chiefs defense become a force in the AFC West.
My take: The Chiefs need tons of help on the defensive side of the ball, and Berry is the best defensive player on the board. So, this is the logical pick for the Chiefs. And one they would likely be happy with for years to come. Remember, to read the explanations for previous picks click the highlighted player name.
The Seattle Seahawks are up next, putting 'CCE718' on the clock.

The Skins have too many needs on both sides of the ball to afford a luxury like Eric Berry. And besides, what’s so bad about Russell Okung?
Best LT of the draft vs Best DB in the draft?
youre not thinking like the skins ownership. Besides, you dont need Okung in a zone blocking scheme.
The Skins would become the Lions, except instead of WR..they draft safeties in the top 10.
I’d approve of their demise tho

I agree with you
and Mike Mayock. If the Chifs drafted LT (Bulaga) they could move Alberts to LG and Waters to C. That would improve 3 postitions with 1 pick.
Arguable. From a KC fan.
By doing that you’re also making some players worse. Especially Albert. You’re making him move to LG after he had started to excel at ZB at LT. We signed Lilja and Wiegman, that’s just messing with the OL more if we go LT.
the line should look like this next yr
Albert Waters Wiegman Lilja Callaghan

Not to mention by doing that you're essentially drafting a Guard with the #5 pick overall.
With the signing of Lilja and Weigmann and having Ndukwe and Waters on staff already and having Brown as someone I’m sure they hope steps into a predominant role this year moving Albert inside is stupid.

And to save some time.
Albert struggled at the start of the year, after a great rookie season, because he was down in weight as the staff asked him to play at a more “atheletic” build. Once he got used to playing at his weight(not to mention a scheme change) and not being able to swallow up defenders like he used to he went on to have only 1 sack against in the last 6 games which included two games against Dumervil(NFL sack champ), a very good Bengal defense, and a Brown defense that ranked 8th in the league in sacks.

Actually, they’d be downgrading 3 positions with 1 pick. The Drafted LT wouldn’t be as good as Albert, certainly now, and probably never, whatever position Albert is moved to would be downgraded, as he has to learn or relearn that position instead of LT, and Waters has barely played Center in the NFL, and then it was over a decade ago. This is a common misconception, perpetrated by guys like Mayock, who really don’t KNOW the Chiefs. It sounds good, but it’s not reality, it’s Madden.
Berry is a great pick, McClain would be fine if berry’s gone.
I agree
And I could easily see the Chiefs trading down a few spots to take one of the deep group of OT’s that are available a few spots later. Especially if Clausen is available, as happened in our mock draft. One of the QB desperate teams might be willing to make KC an offer it can’t refuse.
But since this is a straight mock with no trades allowed, I felt like Berry is the logical pick here.
Not really, Brandon Albert was very good once he learned the zone blocking scheme.
Unless they’re drafting a RT at #5…which isn’t a horrible idea but I’d doubt it.
If Berry’s gone…I actually had them going with a pass rusher, cuz they REALLY can’t do that. Like Brandon Graham or JPP.

They don't rush the passer because they aren't covering guys in the secondary
and they already have 1 starter penned in at OLB in Hali

or they aren't covering guys in the secondary
cuz they can’t get to the QB

Not that I dont like Berry
I just think a very good S will be availble to them in the 2nd round. But there wont be any LT’s at that point that will help right away.
Great pick...
I think this guy is going to be a consistent All Pro and o-line can be addressed later for KC. That defense needs help quickly, and he has the athletic ability to be on the field quickly. I was disappointed Berry was not there at for my “Seattle” pick.
I do not see them doing this
I actually think berry falls in the draft to no fault of his own though! teams just have some real big needs at some key offensive positions and the Chiefs are one of them. They need either a OL to protect cassel or a WR for him to throw too. Haley knows how to pick WR’s so i doubt they use a first round pick on a WR but i dont see berry being the selection as far as need goes……………..he is BPA though
But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!
Just o let you know.
We won’t be selecting WR/LT in the first because we’ve addressed the OL and now just selecting people for the future after the stopgaps in the middle rounds. WR is never a good idea with an early 1st.

The Niners (Crabtree)
and Lions (Megatron) say that no…you can draft a WR that high.
Dez Bryant is not DHB.
Whenever I’ve seen him play, I saw Andre Johnson from his playing days at the U.
I dunno what his true demeanor is..but I don’t think it’d be a bad idea to get him maybe not #5, but I think he’s gonna be a great WR

Those are just a few.
I’ve seen an article on AP addressing the risk of a WR in the first …. more times than not it did not work out. So i’ll go with that. Also Bryant’s got issues and Pioli wont stand for it. He’s a “team” and the “right 53” guy, with that, there’s a very marginal chance he’s drafted by KC much less with no. 5

So you'd go Bulaga then?
As I said earlier I agree they need a stud OT. But Bulaga seems like a reach at 5 and I think if Berry is there he’s too good to pass on. Which OT deserves to go this high once Okung is off the board? That was my problem when I tried to fit one in here for the Chiefs.
It looks like Seattle is going to sign Whitehurst at QB
Excellent signing would possibly change the first pick for the Seahawks. The Bills could be looking at Clausen for real.
Bleeding Blue since 1962
Got a friend in my shop that's a big KC fan
He told that the Chiefs have said they won’t be selecting a safety in round one and are likely to try and move back to select Dez Bryant. However at number 5 Eric Berry is most likely BPA. The Chiefs also brought in Weatherspoon and Thomas, which is a strong indicator that they will attempt to move back.
Dez Bryant makes a lot of sense

Dez Bryant + KC = Not Gonna Happen.
Pioli is all about the “team” the “right 53” and not picking up or getting character issues. Bryant had problems and even some character issues and that right there will show Pioli will not go with Dez. Most likey WRs are either Tate in 2nd or Shipley in 3rd

what exactly are Bryant's character issues? He talked to Deion?
Pioli had Randy Moss didn’t he? Corey Dillon?
I dunno about that idea man.
I dunno about #5 overall, but if they trade back, they could target him. Given KC’s atrocious pass rush, I’d think they’d go there first. But getting Cassel some weapons…and probably the best WR in the draft makes sense.

To me, repeat, to me, i just see some bust potential.
You can call him the “best WR in the draft” but he’s not the best wr in the draft to KC. if we could get tate that would be great with notre dame hc weis in kc. or shipley in the 3rd.
our needs in order are: S NT ILB WR Pass Rusher OL©
Yes KC needs WR, but Dez Bryant is not the right option for KC.
i’d like to see it play out : 1 Berry S 2a Spikes ILB 2b Thomas NT 3 Shipley WR
