Danny Ware resigns for one year

NFL.com shows that Danny Ware has signed a one year contract with the Giants. This is interesting because some mock drafts have predicted C.J.Spiller (RB, Clemson) could be a target. Jacobs and Bradshaw are starters next season, Andre Brown is likely to be fully fit and I (for one) would like to see what he can do, and Ware is now under contract. Gartrell Johnson may be vulnerable, but has shown some promise. Why would the Giants want to draft another RB?

Because there are big questions with all of them

Can Jacobs carry the ball 200 times a year without getting hurt for the playoffs?
Can Bradshaw be a starter?
Will DJ Ware give the effort that is needed to win?
Will Andre Brown be the same since his foot operation?
Is Gartrell Johnson worth a roster spot?

on paper it looks like we're stacked at rb

but the fact is that all of those guys (jacobs, bradshaw, brown, ware, and johnson) have a lot to prove. jacobs and bradshaw have constantly been injured, we havent seen anything out of brown, ware has shown flashes in preseason but little during the regular season, and the jury is still out on gartrell. rb wont be a top priority in the draft, but i think the giants will consider taking a back in the late rounds.

Agreed

I completely agree! We may have a full stable of backs but they all have serious question marks lingering over them. Jacobs, Brown and Bradshaw have health issues and Johnson and Ware just aren’t that good. Brown should have an opportunity to contribute this year but Johnson and Ware need to prove that they are worthy of a roster spot.

Sorry about that

it did occur to me just after I hit the ‘publish’ button, but thought the context would be enough for all you erudite folk because quitting for one year doesn’t make sense. My mistake.

Anyway, if the Giants do draft a RB at any point I presume that Gartrell will get cut. How many broken down or un-tested RBs can the Giants afford to carry?

They've done studies you know, 60% of the time, it works everytime.

G. Johnson isn't some no talent RB from the 7th round

he was a 4th rounder for the Chargers (who know a thing or two about drafting RB’s). He goes to training camp with a real chance to get a place in the team and could even out muscle DJ Ware and Andre Brown from the 3rd spot on the depth chart.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a RB drafted

That will mean someone is getting cut or moved to the practice squad. The Giants usually have no problem carrying 4 backs, but won’t carry more than that. I’d expect Ware and Johnson to be most at risk if this happens. Ware didn’t show much last year and managed to get himself into TC’s doghouse. Ware did not put in full effort on special teams play, for TC that is a giant sin. Johnson may have been a 4th round pick, but couldn’t make the chargers roster and looked unimpressive during his time with the Giants. The reality is if Andre Brown hadn’t ruptured his achilles Johnson would not have been playing for the Giants. Andre Brown is pretty much an unknown for us right now. From his college days he appeared to be a Derrick Ward type player. However, he had a hard time staying healthy in college and started off his NFL career on IR. That doesn’t bode well for the guys future or our ability to dpeend on him.

"Chargers (who know a thing or two about drafting RB’s)"

and they cut Gartrell…

True

but they already had 4 RB’s on the roster that had longer contracts and were also good

True

But they kept Michael Bennett over Gartrell. Maybe he can step up and produce, I really don’t know, but I personally have more faith in BJ/AB and even AB2 over Gartrell. He could definitely out muscle Danny “DJ” Ware, but I really hope AB2 can bounce back and earn that 3rd spot.

What choice

did he have?

His CV from last year does not paint a good picture so no one else was going to sign him

Danny Ware

Danny Ware was the leading rusher for the G-Men in the ’08 pre season. He showed the most speed and agility of the four but was still stuck behind Jacobs, Ward and Bradshaw on the depth chart. Last year he was injured on the opening kickoff of the opening game. He returned only to be reinjured and then Coughlin was not happy with his special teams play. I would like Reese & Co. to give Ware a better shot. to wreak havoc on the Cowboys and Eagles.

Running game problems

Had more to do with the weakening of the Oline and injuries than it did with talent at the RB position. I don’t see them drafting a RB unless we are talking late rounds.

by chris_NYG on Mar 17, 2010 10:29 AM EDT reply actions

I definetly would not

I would stay away from Rb in the first 3 rounds because we do not need a 1st round back and the minute we draft spiller, I bet all of our RB’s will stay healthy all year meaning we wasted a pick……No RB and no DE for me in round 1

But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!

by Blue Gates on Mar 17, 2010 10:41 AM EDT reply actions

I think they had to do this

They don’t know what Jake, AB and AB will look like in OTA’s and camp. All 3 are having offseason surgery…which sucks absolute balls to say about your top THREE RB’s.

They need to re-up Ware, even for insurance.

I don’t think this plays a single ounce in to whether or not they draft Spiller. They’d do it anyway if he’s there, and they like him…and he’s the BPA at that point (and not rated equal to a player of position of more “need”).

Spiller’s still in play.

If they pick Spiller

I am going to want to get together at a bar because I feel that you will be buying … continuously.

True

Im there too but Jerry Reese is not going to draft spiller @15 not this year………even an excellent running back does not automatically mean wins (chris johnson). our O line needs help forget the ones that are hurt already we would just be setting spiller up to get hurt his damn self… JR may want to but its about 20-30 people with input on a draft even though he has final call i dnt think we take him. wish this were another year because the kid is awesome.

But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!
