Mock Draft Monday, 3/15/10

We finally have a bit of a shake-up in the mock draft roll call, and I suspect many of you will be happy with it. Since I began tracking a number of mock drafts back in late January, DT Brian Price of UCLA has consistently been the player most frequently linked to the Giants. This week, however, there has been a change at the top, with LB Rolando McClain of Alabama being linked to the Giants in four newly updated mocks. A few weeks ago it looked very doubtful that McClain would fall to the Giants, but if the mocks are correctly reading the trends, it's looking more and more likely that the #1 LB in the draft will be available when the Giants pick.

For further analysis of the McClain picks, check out Draft Countdown, Don Banks at CNN/SI, & the ESPN Combined Mock, in which both Mel Kiper Jr. & Todd McShay have McClain going to the Giants.

In addition to those three mocks, Walter Football & Ben Standig of FF Toolbox both have the Giants taking DE Derek Morgan of Georgia Tech.

Price, the old favorite, is only linked to the Giants by Draft Ace this week.

Last week, Draft Tek had the Giants taking OT Anthony Davis, of Rutgers. This week they still have the Giants going offensive line, but instead of Davis they believe the pick will be OT Trent Williams of Oklahoma. I like Williams more than Davis, but I would still prefer to see McClain taken at #15.

Finally, I just want to remind you that this isn't a summary of every single mock draft out there, just the ones that I've been tracking which have been updated in the past week, plus the Don Banks one which I somehow hadn't linked to in the past. So, technically, Price is still the most popular name for the Giants, but many of the mocks that list him haven't been updated recently and might be out of date. The trend is definitely heading in Rolando McClain's direction.

Good stuff, CJ

Love the speculation, and it’s interesting how things shift.

by Ed Valentine on Mar 15, 2010 6:22 PM EDT reply actions

I've noticed that, too

I thought it was a little telling that JR, TC and Jim Hermann were all at Alabama’s pro day. It’s possible that alot of these mocks reflected the buzz that caused.

On a day when 19 schools were holding pro days, 10 of which are notable programs with blue chip players, sending that many representatives, including a position coach is fodder enough for speculation.

Interesting stuff CJ..Good job

Oh by the way, and off topic..If any of you guys that have my e-mail address…I got hacked by a scammer..It is a relatively new one where one of these morons get hold of your address book and you get a e-mail stating I am in London and need help and it asks to send money..Well..I am not in London, and this nit-wit doesn’t realize anyhow that we are Giants fans..generally a cheap bunch…lol..But anyways if you get an email titled HELP..ignore it and delete it..However, if you feel me worthy let me know..I’ll send you the appropriate address to send your checks to…hahaha!!

YAY!

Brian Price may be this year’s Brian Cushing! A player that was rumored to the Giants all offseason till the point it made people sick, then it got changed….and of course, Cushing is excellent.

Maybe Price is the man? Maybe not?

Either way, Insane McClain…all day.

I still don't think he falls

My guess is McClain is gone at #15. I would take Williams over Davis, but again not sure he is actually there at #15.

Price has lost all momentum

he is out of the first round. Maybe we can get him with #46 but at #15 it would be a reach

I agree with Phillip

If we want McClain, and I’m still on his bandwagon, I think we’re going to have to move up to #10 which I also think is very possible. The Jags have too many needs and would love to move down, and they can’t take Tebow with the 10th pick, so . . . The trick might be being the first team in line to trade with them. I definitely get the impression that you guys, the BBV vets, aren’t a big fan of trading up to get him but I’m still convinced if that’s who the Giants want that will probably be the cost of doing business. It would probably cost us a 3rd, but maybe we could trade someone on our present roster instead? The Jags have needs . . .

by AZtheGiantsYankNY on Mar 15, 2010 8:50 PM EDT reply actions

Jags might want him

One of the current speculations is the Jags themselves could be a landing spot for McClain. If McClain is there at 15 and we take him I’ll be ok with it, I don’t really want to see us trade up for him. I don’t think he brings enough to the table over other options to be worth that.

by bigblue777 on Mar 15, 2010 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions

trading someone on our roster...

like say one of our DE’s like oh say Osi? He said he wants to go somewhere he is gonna start, and its no secret the jags are in the need of a passrusher in a division with Peyton Manning and Matt Schaud making his way into the upper echelon of QB’s… so why not trade osi to them and move up 5 big spots to leap frog Denver (the most dangerous team to the NYG in terms of interest in McClain)? If i’m jerry reese and i see that kind of deal present itself, i’m pulling the trigger.

Kiper and McShay?!

Great!!
Now, we definitely are not getting McClain…
hahaha

Still early yet . . .

Of course its still early yet and a lot of things could still change by draft day. Too bad we couldn’t just trade Osi for the Jag’s 10th pick straight up and keep our own 15th. Of course we could sweeten the deal somewhat with other players on our roster, like Moss, Hagan, or Wilkinson or anybody else who won’t be a big contributor on our roster this coming season. It’s fun to speculate and even more fun to fall victim to naive wishful thinking.

by AZtheGiantsYankNY on Mar 15, 2010 9:01 PM EDT reply actions

If We Could Get the 10th Pick For Osi

Reese would have done it already. I don’t think we could get more than a 3rd rounder for him, if that. The scenario I would like to see would be for Morgan to fall to the Giants, and then Reese trades Osi for a 3rd rounder. Then, use the next 3 picks on a MLB, DT and CB. We need a small, fast corner who can cover D. Jackson and Miles Austin.

by Be Driven on Mar 15, 2010 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Get a late 1st or early 2nd round pick for Osi

and use it for Penn State’s Sean Lee… Then we could go DT/DE at our pick 15.

Kirwan has us getting Spoon

Just noticed over on NFL.com Kirwan has finally clued in we don’t want Kindle (he has Miami grabbing him which I’d venture is a good guess), and he has us getting Weatherspoon at 15. As most here know I’d be excited to see that. I’m glad to see that he is now officially showing up on mocks there.

by bigblue777 on Mar 15, 2010 9:49 PM EDT reply actions

if he's a MLB..I can see it.

I still have doubts about that.

I think its a near lock he’ll be on the board too, so we’ll see. I’d still rather pass and get a better player then go for a true Mike in the middle rounds (Angerer…)

by FreeBradshaw on Mar 15, 2010 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he's a Mike

I don’t hink he has any trouble playing the Mike for us. He looked great playing in the middle at the senior bowl. Weatherspoon is going to be a better player than Mike prospects later in the draft, and he will be able to make an impact on the field much sooner. Any later round LB prospect is going to be pretty much the same situation as guys like Goff and Kehl. Someone who needs some development time and may or may not end up really being a player. I am very confident that Spoon is a player at the NFL level and I’d expet him to have a darn good shot at being the starter on opening day.

by bigblue777 on Mar 15, 2010 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope the Giants, if they pick him...

are more sure then going by the Senior bowl…and its Pro bowl rules

There is enough in his regular game tape

He had all of the typical Mike responsibilities of calling the plays, setting the defense, all of that at Mizzou. He just did it from the Will because he was athletic enough to play there. He has shown the play recognition skills you want to see out of your Mike as well.

I think many mock drafts are done by people that have no idea what team needs are

And they debug them a la MSFT.

Put out a flawed product, let the fans of each team scream out. For example, any mock that had McClain sliding past Giants will generate a ton of email. Then they refine, generating hopefully less email, etc etc.

But I think that Cold Hard Football Facts, analyzed a bunch of mock drafts for accuracy versus a pet or picking out of a hat. The hat wasn’t far off. Part is that its almost impossible to gauge for trades and how it shakes things up.

Angerer makes me think of Blackburn

Not that a Blackburn type player is a bad thing. It’s the kind of player that will make a huge contribution on special teams, is going to be a reliable reserver for you for years,a dn ca always be counted on to go at 110% no matter what you ask them to do. The question is do you ask such a player to be your starter?

by bigblue777 on Mar 15, 2010 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions

you think of Blackburn

I think of Barrett Ruud.

Tomato…tomatoe I guess right?

"Ruud"

“Angerer”, “Pierce”..sounds like a MLB name to me doesn’t it?

“Spoon”? Should be doing that with a female after the game, I don’t want a team leader named “Spoon”.

Ruud isn’t coming here, Pierce is shot…lets get Angerer.

..unless Insane McClain falls to us (can still get Angerer tho…)

Haha

Well if we are going by the cooler sounding name, ok you win. Alright I have to set my college hoops bracket, can you help me pick my teams based on cooler mascot and prettier jerseys :)

Well..Free let's be serious..It is not 'spoon' ...It is 'spoons'..That is what a female likes..

Blackburn, Frankie Ferrara et al

Are guys that will kill you in this league.

Energy guys that are easy to love for their attitude, effort etc..
but they simply lack the ability to play at a high level. You keep them around because
you admire their style of play, but in the end, when you are forced to rely on them
they get smoked.

There is no substitute for talent.

Now I am Getting Worried

With McClain looming, i just don’t feel good about it. Yeah, I know its a huge need, maybe our biggest though I would contend its DT – but in watching the film of the guy, honestly, I don’t see whats so great about him. I just don’t like what I see on film, I am worried he’s a guy who is productive because of the people he has on that defense and in front of him. In a nutshell, I see a guy who rarely gets touched, runs to the ball and then arm-tackles them…. Thats not reality in the NFL. I don’t see the Butkus hits, I don’t see him fighting thru trash, taking on guards and stuffing guys…… He stands so upright. I don’t know, I just don’t like what I see and I don’t like taking any LB in the first round unless they are an LT – which means they are an impact pass-rushing LB. To me, that position is devalued in the first round like TE, S, G and RB.
