NFL: Giants, Jets will share opening of stadium

The NFL has found a compromise solution to the spat between the New York Giants and New York Jets over who should open the new stadium the teams will share.

From the NFL:

The New York Jets and New York Giants both will play at home in their new Meadowlands Stadium on the opening weekend of the 2010 regular season, the NFL announced today.

The Giants will play on Sunday afternoon, September 12, and the Jets will play in the first nationally televised Monday Night Football game of the season on September 13. The NFL is completing the final stages of the 2010 schedule. The opponents for the Jets and Giants Kickoff Weekend home openers will be announced soon.

In addition, the NFL announced that the Jets will host the first NFL game at the new stadium during the preseason in August.

Under the NFL Constitution and By-Laws, the commissioner is responsible for determining the playing schedule.

"After extensive discussions with both teams, we have come up with what we believe is a unique approach for celebrating the opening of the new Meadowlands Stadium," said Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Interesting. This whole stadium sharing thing is a nuisance. Your thoughts?

So we get 1PM

but the Jets get Prime-Time?
Still think we come out the loser here…the stadium will be showcased in Green, not BIG BLUE

-Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!

I think we're getting a 4:15 game

But I do agree, it is ridiculous. We should be opening the stadium in primetime, no questions asked

its gotta be a primetime game

fox would flip out if they would not be able to show this during primetime

Yes Ed I read that..At first they said they were going to flip a coin..

But both teams decided to share/help fund the new stadium so we wouldn’t be able gripe about it either way..I am happy though that our guys open it up on Sunday the 12th..It was a smart economic move by both teams, that won’t pass down on us fans as far as prices are concerned, but the G-men own the Meadowlands and should play the opening game there..the Jets got the concession prize..I am a bit sad about the old stadium getting bulldozed..Lots of memories of me and my late Dad will be buried with it,

I dont think it was the Jets who go the concession prize..

Well..look at it this way..The Giants game will most likely be on national TV..

And when the Jets show up on Monday night..the Giants cleats will have already scarred the turf and left indelible marks and scars on it..Our guys feet will be the first to run onto that field and play..Our guys will introduce that stadium on Sunday, they will be the first to run through that tunnel and onto the field…and using the ‘new’ bathrooms.

Oh well, makes sense I suppose..

..Jets are the, and I hate using this ridiculous sports phrase, “sexier” team. Theyve got the young QB, hot head coach and they are much easier to write an interesting story about.

Compare what Al Michaels could say about the Giants if they were playing the prime-time vs. the Jets. Jets are more interesting, we limped to 8-8

you're right

it’s their own fault… if the Giants had gone to the NFC championship game last year, they’d probably be the MNF game

You play to win the game!

Yeah and the "sexy" Jets

“sexied” their way through two exhibition games in the last two weeks of the season all the way to…9-7. Ha ha,

I care about

who we play not when we play. But for the sake of argument Football is played on Sundays ( for the most part )and we are the more " traditional" team, so getting the first game there means more to us than a nationally televised game I would think. Plus, we usually stink it up on Monday nights, unless we’re playing the Skins.

I second this

I realize people are pushing this Jets vs. Giants thing but I’m not feeling it.

Who cares about the Jets

Let them take the spotlight off us. We need to play with that chip on the shoulder mentality anyways.

by wangstu13 on Mar 15, 2010 8:11 PM EDT reply actions

This really pisses me off

First the jets close off giants stadium, then they demand a coin toss to open this stadium then when they lose the toss they demand that we share the stadium that week.

Seriously the jets front office are the biggest scum bags in the league

Jet Hatting

Woody Johnson has a serious little brother problem with the Giants, to be honest with you I am really looking forward to this season for two reasons, a Giant rebond and it will be so fun to watch the Jets talk a bunch of smack and watch their season go down in flames same ole Jets are about to reapear.

I wish the J-E-T-S would just M-O-V-E away!!!! I hear L.A. wants a team again. Don’t let the door hit you Jets. And don’t forget to take fireman Ed with you. I hate the thought of that guy in our GIANTS STADIUM!

Oh Well

When opening weekend rolls around I’ll be happy not to have to wait till Monday night to watch the Gmen. Give me 1pm any day. The Jets franchise and fans have the little dog syndrome. Just like most little dogs, they bark and bark and bark trying to prove how tough they are. Just give them a little swat and yell at them to go lay down, they listen…

The Jets are not going anywhere..

Even ‘Sexy Rex’ is trying to slim down..won’t help them..they are losers won’t matter…they just signed the false “LT” for two years..good luck..

Man…seriously?

Giants should be more concern about their defense and Jets should be more concern about their offense than who open up a stadium…

this doesn't involve the 53 man or the coaching staff of either team

so I dunno what the Giants defense or Jets offense has to do with this. They’ll play where they are told.

Since you’re not a fan (opposite..actually) and with a team that doesn’t’ share a stadium…..better off sitting this one out

NYG on prime time = NATIONAL EMBARRASSMENT!!!

I have been a long time Giants fan. but they have a LONG history
of looking bad under the lights of prime time

(e.g. See the Cleveland game in an 11-1 start after the SB…)

Last thing I want is to have to wakeup Monday morning
to a “Jerry Jones” feeling after opening night!!!!

(that look on JJ’s face was priceless wasn’t it… )

Hello...

I’m curious, do you think the NFL will schedule the Cowboys to open against you in your new stadium much like you guys played against them in their first game in their new stadium? Just a thought. I wouldn’t be surprised if the NFL does such a thing.

Who cares ?

I don’t get all the fuss.
This is football, what matters is the score at the end of the game. And we’ll be ahead of the Jets there anyway :)

Been reading here on this site since 2007

All I can say is after they could not get their stadium in NY, they had to leach on us. No ill will but how can they have any say on this. This is a 50/50 but only because we allowed them in. They should have given us the first game without a fight.

We had a stadium already set before them. Then the jets come in saying this is our stadium too. I don’t get it. We had to re-design the plans for them.

I will be at the first game, Sec. 131 row 39. At the New Giants Stadium!

I don’t post much, but I do read here all the time!

Doesn't bother me...

Trust me, I hate listening to whiny Jets fans on WFAN as much as the next guy, but frankly, this seems petty. The Jets were a better football team than we were last year, especially on defense. As long as we win, everything will sort itself out. That bad ass stadium is gonna look awesome in Blue though huh?!

I wouldn't say they were much better

The played two teams the last two weeks of the season that had no interest whatsoever in playing. And those wins got them to 9-7.

by blains2000 on Mar 16, 2010 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

If we played against 3rd stringers instead of us being the ones with 3rd stringers in the last 2 weeks we would’ve been 10-6 and we still would’ve missed the playoffs

Very Curious Scenario

Considering the Johnson’s have a controlling stake in a $177 Billion monstrosity, one of the US’s more successful companies in the US if not the entire WORLD. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out politically. I have a feeling it’s not over yet.

Sunday 4:15 is better than Monday night

Guys I’m not sure most of you realize this but Sunday 4:15 double header game is usually the highest rated game of the week. I’d much rather have that then the first Monday nighter. MNF is a consilation for the Jets thats why Woody’s pissed. The Sunday night game is the Prime Time game of significance in the NFL. It’s on network TV not cable, its usaullay a better match up, and late in the year they “flex” games to ensure a good TV matchup. The NFL changed this in 06 when the moved Sunday night games to NBC becasue ratings for MNF had been going south for years so the put MNF on cable because it’s not that signficant as it once was. Yes if you watch ESPNs propaganda it’s the Super Bowl every week but it’s usally a second rate game while NBC gets the top prime time match ups while 4:15 National double headers are the big games.
