Rolando McClain Pro Day workout cut short. Reveals he has Crohn's

After running a 4.71 and 4.74 in the 40 at today's UA pro day, McClain was observed having a hard time catching his breath- as twittered by a correspondent for the Tuscaloosah News. It was later revealed that "Ro", as his classmates know him, has been suffering from Crohn's Disease since high school.

What effect this will have on his being able to perform at a high level in the NFL is unknown at this time, but David Garrard is also a Crohn's sufferer and has been effective at, arguably, the toughest position in the game.

What do you guys think?

If the Giants go to a Tampa 2

he will not be our MLB. His 40 was nothing special.

EJ Henderson ran a 4.85. He’s in Minny’s tampa 2. He’s good.

No. And? You gotta run a special 40 as a MLB to be a top 15 pick?

If he’s running 40 yards…we’re in trouble anyway.

And...

If you’re drafting someone in the top 15, he needs to be great – not just good. EJ Henderson is a good LB. McClain wouldn’t be drafted by the Giants to be EJ Henderson.

by GhostDini on Mar 10, 2010 8:10 PM EST up reply actions

we ain’t looking for EJ Henderson.

Looking for Rolando McClain to be the starting LB on the NY Giants.

He doesn’t “need” to be great. It would be nice of course.

He needs to be a starter and solidify the position.

and...

since when does 40 time mean your a good football player?

Read what I explicitly type

I never said that the 40 time is what made a good football player. I said that if the Giants run the Tampa 2, then McClain will not be our MLB. At least, he won’t be based on that time. I know that he had a hamstring injury recently so that might have affected his time. Regardless, how you already know what defense the Giants will run is beyond me.

I said that a top 15 player in the draft, the consensus #1 player at his position, should be great. This isn’t a stop-gap that you’re asking to “solidify the position.” This guy is supposed to be a stud, capable of playing in any defense, and praised by people up and down college football. Any player drafted in the first two rounds needs to eventually be a starter. Any player drafted this early in the first round needs to be great.

by GhostDini on Mar 10, 2010 8:38 PM EST up reply actions

you said his 40 wasn’t special. I say who cares about a 40.

I don’t know what defense the Giants will run. Fewell has said its not set on Tampa 2.

If it is Tampa 2..EJ Henderson’s shown that a big dude can do that. McClain’s better then Henderson.

And McClain’s been praised up and down by all.

He's already said that he's better and more comfortable in a 3-4

Unless the Giants think he can be great in a 4-3, then he’s not worth it. You don’t pick guys that early to be just good.

by GhostDini on Mar 10, 2010 8:11 PM EST up reply actions

?Great?

If we’re looking for great, we need to trade the entire draft for Big Suh and pray to the football Gods for him to be great.

I was stating that its possible for a dude to be ‘slow" in a tampa 2 D. McClain’s not slow and the Giants aren’t running a tampa 2…so its irrelevant.

It doesn’t matter what he said…if the Giants draft him, he has no say.

McClain also ran a lot faster than Henderson.

Way too many people are getting caught up in 40 times. I was a member of this site last year, but were people advocating Heward-Bay over Nicks?

McClain is plenty quick, fluid, SMART, and has great anticipation skills due to his vast understand of defense. I could care less what his 40 times are. I saw him play enough the last 2 years to know that he is a great football player.

by ggggmen08 on Mar 10, 2010 8:17 PM EST up reply actions

I think SMART

is definitely the key here with Rolando McClain. What he lacks in actual physical quickness he can compensate for by dissecting a play and being in a position to make a play before other linebackers would be able to. It seems the game has already “slowed down” for him some, and that allows him to be the stud and playmaker he is

by RealLT on Mar 10, 2010 8:47 PM EST up reply actions

Nicks is fast

Heyward-Bey is circus freak fast… If the Giants draft McClain then we all know they will run there defensive system around him, I’m not sold on this guy and wish we could hear his team interviews at the combine but it’s out of our hands let’s just hope whoever we draft becomes a stud.

Question Free....

you are trying to dismiss McClains 40 time, saying he still can be a good MLB? So what about Spikes then? isnt that your big knock on him? What if Spikes end up running a faster 40 time then McClain?

by NJDuke on Mar 11, 2010 6:41 AM EST up reply actions

Spikes

To me seems like a better fit in our system, but I think 15 might be a little high to take him.

by gobs56 on Mar 11, 2010 7:22 AM EST up reply actions

agreed

could probably get him in the 2nd

by NJDuke on Mar 11, 2010 7:45 AM EST up reply actions

we’ll see.

Still probably dismiss it. McClain plays fast. I haven’t seen the same from Spikes.

Demeco Ryans ran a 4.65 at 6"1 236lbs.

Insane McClain’s fast.

Crohn's is very treatable

especially on an NFL salary vs. Nick Sabaen’s paycheck.

Not a thing’s changed for me. Hope the top 14 teams don’t know what Crohns is and think its a scary monster.

Treatment shouldn't be a problem

I say this having experience in the field; I was diagnosed with Crohn’s 5 years ago or so. Not sure how bad his case is, but shouldn’t hinder his career in any way. These “attacks” can come and go literally at any time and last…well, I had one that lasted over 24 hours before I was carted to the ER.

Different kinds of treatments from pills daily, infusions every couple of months, and ultimately, removing diseased pieces of his intestine, which will still come back, but you know it’s BAD when they have to start cutting.

Shouldn’t scare anyone away, but like you said, it would be nice if the 14 teams ahead of us think that way. Now I’m super-rooting for him to fall to us. He’d immediately be my new hero, sorry BJ. Go McClain!

Recover and invasive surgery

Are no Joke and would suck if needed during the season… I’m sure they would try and schedule it in the off season, Garrard had it in the offseason but he doesn’t take the punishment a MLB would and removing massive amount on intestines is no small task. I wish him the best of luck but it very well could affect his NFL career. Plus we don’t know how much this disease has affected people like Garrard durning his career maybe he could be a much better player without it.

Remember

The guy had to cut his pro day short due to feeling ill from this disease, What if that were a game??

I'd chalk that up to nerves

I know that sounds dumb, considering he’ll be in the spotlight in the NFL, but stress effects the flare ups big time and I don’t see him having a problem once he catches on with some team. This pro day was the equivalence of the biggest job interview of his life. He SHOULD be stressed. But seeing him during games, he’s a natural and feels comfortable. I see no problems in the future.

Tights were sweet

and Spoon is a better fit. Just as smart, faster, stronger, and ore charismatic. McClain had more early hype coming into draft season because he is from bama, but after the combine, pro days, and some further evaluation are over I don’t know that a lot of folks draft boards don’t have a swap.

by bigblue777 on Mar 10, 2010 10:04 PM EST up reply actions

i don't know if charismatic should or does matter

in the lockerroom it would probably just be, “shut up, rook” anyway. and as his career advances, well, clinton portis has charisma for days. whats that doing for the redskins besides keeping dan steinberg employed?

On his property, Mr. Frazier has created a number of places to unwind — or as he said, "just chill."

Tweets by Chris Mortensen

For whatever they’re worth:

Yes, McClain looks like “beast,” & he’ll go 1st rd but some NFL folks say game film doesn’t always match up & more loafs than you’d expect.

http://twitter.com/mortreport/status/10297694493

There’ve been some stud LB’s lately: Willis, Beason, 3 SC LB’s last year & Curry. I don’t think McClain is in that class.

I hope he is not in Curry's class

Curry is absolutely terrible, a bigger bust than Darius Heyward-Bey

Aside from Beason (who was very good..but an undersized WLB from Miami...)

the others were more polished seniors.

McClain’s only a junior

He isnt in there class

i never saw them jogging down the field when the running back gets to the corner, maybe there is a problem with mcclain

by BigBlueD on Mar 10, 2010 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

Curry

Coming out of college, it was said that Curry doesn’t have elite NFL instincts, overpursues on plays, and bites on a play action. Kinda reminds me of what the scouts are saying about Weatherspoon. Actually, that’s exactly what they’re saying.
