Maybe McClain will fall

I am not sure I want Rolando McClain with our #1 pick but we do have a huge hole in the middle of our defense. If it's the defensive lines play or the fact that we have no real player at MLB. I have total faith in the Giants choice for our new MLB so I won't speculate who we are going to choose. As more and more comes out about McClain it makes me think he will fall further then most predict.

First he says he fits the 3-4 system better. Then he doesn't want to run the 40, apparently he was sick and this is why.

Rolando McClain cut his workout short today at Alabama's Pro Day

and revealed he has Crohn’s disease.

After running a 4.71 and a 4.74 in the 40 he was een having a hard time catching his breath as was twittered by a correspondant for the Tuscaloosah News.

I don’t know what effect this would have on his being able to perform at a high level in the NFL, but David Garrard is also a Crohn’s sufferer and manages to be effective at the toughest position in the game.

Give me a Spoon

I was already starting to grade out Weatherspoon as more desirable, recent nformation is really making that case hard in my mind.

Weatherspoon would have to adjust to a new position

while McClain has already excelled at the position more than any other player in college football. I have seen not seen one scout grade Weatherspoon ahead of McClain. So taking into account that McClain is graded higher and doesn’t have to change positions (I know he was a 3-4 ILB) I’m not sure why Weatherspoon would be the more favorable choice.

They'd both have to adjust

It’s a new system and therefore really a somewhat new position for either player. Weatherspoon has demonstrated he can play an of the 3 43 LB spots. McClain has not and has stated he sees himself as a 34 ILB.

GIANTS SHOULD TRADE DOWN

Mcclain is overrated is not very fast, he is a good tackle and leader but can’t cover anyone in the passing game. The giants should trade down and draft a dt and get an extra second or third round draft pick.

Completely untrue

He is not overrated, plays faster than his 40 time because of his great anticipation skills and smarts, and most certainly can cover in the passing game.

Get a look at the film on NFL.com of UA's pro day, you'll love seeing him run drills.

Fluid change of direction, smooth hips, exceptional burst acceleration. The dude looks powerful!

Relax guys! It's totally treatable to the point of zero effect if managed well

He’s just got to keep up on his medication schedule. You can be sure that Ronnie Barnes will have this completely under control.

As much as I like Weatherspoon, if Rolo falls to #15 you don’t even blink before taking him. He just makes it look easy. Face it. They’re both outstanding athletes, but “Spoon”, if you will, is a prototypical WILL. McClain is a rare breed as far as MLB potential is concerned.

I’ve gotten to watch a bunch of games that were sent to me and this kid ran the entire defense for UA. He’s around the ball almost every single play. It looks like he knows what the opponents game plan is. Every offensive posession, he was on the sideline with Saban working on tweaking the D and then going out and making the calls and adjustments. This combination of gifts comes around once every 8-10 years. I hope that no other team sees that, but I’m sure it’s already obvious league-wide.

I couldn't agree more

He quarterbacked arguably the #1 defense in college football. He is a natural leader. He knows what offenses are going to do. He understands where his teammates are supposed to be and gets them in position to make plays.

On top of all that he makes plays all over the field. I can’t imagine someone that has seen him play multiple games would be against drafting him.

Agree with all of it, except the disease part

Can be managed, yes, but sadly from experience, you never know when it’s going to flare up. I do agree that it shouldn’t be a problem, but just to let you and everyone else out there know, attacks can happen anytime, anyplace, for a considerable time. That shouldn’t scare anyone away though. He’s obviously made it this far, and this is the first I’ve heard of it, so that’s saying something. I’ll be rooting for him even harder to fall to us.

Both Kiper and McShay

have McClain going to the Giants at #15 in today’s mock draft on ESPN. Sadly its an insider article…but heres what they had to say about him.

Kiper: McClain is the top inside linebacker in the draft, and the Giants would be thrilled to see him available at No. 15. Speed is the only question surrounding McClain, but he’s an instinctive player with great diagnostic skills that make up for those question marks. He’s also a fiery leader.

McShay: McClain has yet to run the 40 for teams and shows some inconsistencies on film, but the Giants would do well to get him here after the departure of the productive Antonio Pierce. McClain is an excellent tackler who shows elite instincts when playing at his best.

A: “something that drops McClain to the Giants”….

Q: Chron’s disease

TRADE BACK

I say trade back and get Weatherspoon, pick up an extra third. With the second pick take either Price(Who I think will fall to the second)Odrick or houston. Trade a third and a fourth for an additional second. Pick up an OT. 3rd round CB. 5th rd saftey. 6th rd blocking TE. 7th BPA. I’m sure Mcclain is a very good player. However I feel weatherspoon is going to be the better NFL ILB for the Giants.

by Curtis Sexton on Mar 10, 2010 11:24 PM EST reply actions

I wouldn’t assume you can trade back and still land Weatherspoon. Either take him at 15 or seriously risk losing him to another team if you trade back. That is assuming you can even find a trade partner that wants to trade up to 15.

by bigblue777 on Mar 11, 2010 8:55 AM EST up reply actions

Stay at 15 and take who you love

thats the only option, trading up or down this year could be dangerous and doesnt gaurantee anything, who ever they want, they are going to go after at 15, Mcclain shouldnt fall that far, the Broncos are not going to let that happen most likely if mcclain is there snatch him up if not go weatherspoon or DT……… the giants might be taking more than one LB in the first 3 rounds, you never know

But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!
