New overtime rules?
Didn't see this anywhere, so i'll up this link here and get some feedback. Personally, i'd be all for this rule change. i think the current rules are unfair to the defense, whereas we reward them during regulation for holding a team to 3 points, we penalize them with a loss for doing the same. This is a new and radical idea, and i wonder what you guys think.

love the idea of a change
i’ll take that change, if thats what they decide on, i’d rather have them play another quarter, after another quarter until its decided… I work with an aussie and he’s a big NFL fan since he moved here a while back and we were talking one day about the over time rules in the NFL and we didnt think they were totally fair…i dont remember exactly what he said but i think in australian rugby i think or one of the sports over there they decide ties in the regular season and playoff by playing another period after period until its decided but, they decide a championship game that ends in a tie by coming back the following week and playing another whole game…that sounds cool…a little crazy but cool
The problem is the fatigue with that
the players are very tired after 60 minutes so wanting them to play another quarter is not that great. It just turns into sloppy and uninspired football because the players don’t have the stamina to play at 100% anymore

Anything but the coin
Anything has got to be better than tossing a coin. So much rides on winning the coin toss and securing first possession under the current system. Even giving the ball to the team that scores the most TDs in regular time would be better than the coin.
They've done studies you know, 60% of the time, it works everytime.
I dont like the change...
I think its another way the league is trying to make itself an offensive league. The system is not broken!!! in the playoffs, and im not 100% sure on these stats, but i think overtime games go 13-14 on teams recieving the ball to teams playing defense first. Just remeber, in 2007 when the Packers got the ball first in overtime? We had a better defense and came out on top.
Sudden Death
The way real mens sports should be played, plain and simple.. Sorry if your offense cant score more points then the other teams at the end of 60 minutes, A coin flip is fair go ahead and flip one a 100 times it’ll be 49 to 51 or 50 to 50, no reason to change something that aint broke, A team like the Jets should want you to get the ball first their defense is their offense, Colts want it in Peytons hands… Change is not needed here…
TEAM WON TOSS AND WON GAME 52% Since 1974
Your telling me thats not fair??
Change it to the fourth quarter stretch(sorry MLB fans, me included) Thats just G@y
All's Well that Fewell
YES!!!
a voice of reasoning!!! why change the game!!! it has worked for this many years, a team always has to loose the game (if its not a tie) so there will be complaining, but this is a fair system, just man up and play some DEFENSE!!!
if it's worked so many years...
why is there such a strong contingent that wants to change it? year after year they revisit the overtime rules, that’s for a reason.
i personally just don’t like watching a team throw a 40 yard bomb to the 20 yard line then watch them run 2 meaningless runs designed to get the ball directly centered then rolling in the least athletic man on the field to decide the game for the real players. make teams think twice before being so uninspired to put up 7 more. don’t penalize the D for doing something good and holding a team to 3 points. its’ good to hold a team to a field goal all game except sudden death? then an already tired D has to be perfect? doesn’t work IMO.
Thats fine
But the stats dont lie 52% You cant argue againts that, fine you don’t like watching the kicker win the game, then start a website saying take down the goal post and cut all kickers. It just seems to me too many kids get off playing Madden and who the heck punts or kicks field goals in video games, that takes away all stragey IMO. Madden is a game leave it at that.
All's Well that Fewell
Umm up until this point you're the only one that's mentioned Madden
me personally, i don’t base any life choices or decisions on Madden. The fact that we may be from different generations aside, i’m far from a kid, and even moreso, this is a decision that has been juggled back and forth many years by 32 grown men(owners) and the competition commitee. So to simply equate it to the videogamizing of society is quite ludicrous. it’s simply a new idea that has taken form and i along with many agree with.
People in the history of the game(or any game for that matter) always fight change. i remember how long it took instant replay to catch on. the owners fought it for years. I would assume(since this was b4 my time) that it was the same for changing from leather helmets, and the same as moving the field goals back from the front of the endzone.
Stats are fine, that is your best argument. But that wasn’t the basis of my argument. it wasn’t who won or lost, it was about the tone a game takes in the final stanza. You talk about strategy but there is no strategy in ‘get the ball to the 30 or better; then cover up and run straight ahead.’ There’s the strategy.
I didn’t start a website, i started this thread. Not enough for you Gobsy? :)
Didn't mean
To come off like all new ideas are bad ideas, If the move proves to work better then the current(which will be hard at 52%) then great but truth is it’s just talk by the competition committee, plain and simple just discussion and I am glad you started this thread because it’s good that we has fans discuss this as well.. I like to know the difference of opinion.
Get the ball to the 30 is easier said then done, but I see your point. Hate to break it to you though the rule won’t change this year and unless the superbowl is decided by a FG in OT then it probably won’t happen next year either(If there is a next year). I do see change coming this I am sure of but I like what we have in place now. Although against it, I can deal with a change in OT those games dont happen that often so it surely wont affect the season regardless if the changes work.
The only true change they speak of right now is if the team who gets the ball first only scores a FG then the other team gets a chance to match or end it with a TD. If the team that gets the ball first scores a TD then game over. It will make OT more exciting but not sure thats top of the list in changes that need to be mad.
BTW, Like the Y you added very cute…

Madden
Just to clear things up, I wasn’t saying Madden is what cause you to open this thread, I ment as a whole Madden has cause this change OT feel with the younger fans do to the fact the in game most people dont try field goals won’t punt and dont run the clock down, I’ve played madden, done it the Giants way ball control = clock control and everyone calls it cheap or cheating. I do conside my self young still even though I’m over 30 married and have a kid doesn’t make me old yet!! Sorry for the confusion..
All's Well that Fewell
i hear you
Thats why i created the thread, to hear everyone’s feelings on this proposal. I just wanted to get across that no thought process here that i put out resembles anything i’d do in Madden.
And i am also 30+, with 2 kids as a matter of fact. i guess i assumed you were older because of your sn(i thought the 56 referred to your birth year; now i can safely assume it has to do with a jersey number) so we’re probably the same generation.
I am also
over 30 with children. We should make a facebook group.

If they play good offense
Luck is a part of the game, sooner people get use to that the better off you will be.

good defense = not giving up points
if you can’t make a defensive stand one time when you really need it, you lose — I like that.
If the visiting team can’t hold a tie in the bottom of the inning, they lose .. whether it’s one run or a grand slam. Likewise, you can’t get burned by a big play in OT.
Also: the 30 yard line is what, a 47-yard field goal? That’s gotta be … a coin flip!

the difference in baseball is that at least the visiting team gets a shot to win it. A better comparison would be like the visiting team winning it in the top of the 10th, with no last licks for the home team.
As a matter of fact, out of all the major sports, football(pro) is the only one that doesn’t allow each team a fair opp. to win. Even with hockey, a team could win the faceoff and go right ahead and score, but at least the opposing team gets a fair shot at the face off. In this day and age to decide the greatest sport on a coin flip? Yuck. They should do it like the old pro vs. joes, put a ball on the 50 yard line and let the quickest man from each team run to the ball and smack each other around in the process – whoever gets the ball, earns his team the rock. not gonna happen, but anything’s better than a coin flip.
i get anyone who is a staunch supporter of the ‘sudden death’ aspect of it; it is sudden death in it’s truest form. i just am not one of those people.
Im all for the change
I hate it how a team can win just by the luck of the coin toss. Against the Falcons, even though I was happy we won, there was a hollow feeling because I knew that our D would have let through a TD if we had lost the toss.
Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Oi ! Oi ! Oi ! Aiming for ONE medal in the winter Olympics.

Not all that lucky… once again
Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.
All's Well that Fewell
The problem is that with a coin toss there may be no opportunity
or the opportunities are not evenly distributed. The game has to be won by the team that is better on the day, not just luckier on the day .. if at all possible.
They've done studies you know, 60% of the time, it works everytime.
well,
what about the team that wins the opening coin toss? They might get more possessions. Is regulation also unfair?

Flip The Coin ..................
If it aint broke dont fix it , Defenses know whats at stake MAN UP !!!! lol
I hate the NFL overtime.
I don’t think they really need to change for the regular season. But for the Post season I think they should go possession for possession . Why doesn’t the team who wins the coin toss have to play good defense as well? Also the most dramatic moments in sports come from win or lose plays, and sudden death in the NFL takes away from that.
