You can't say they aren't prestigious though
28 World Series and being dominant throughout almost the whole history of the franchise makes a team very prestigious.
Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.
When there's a WILL there's a WAY
Knicks
if your took all the teams on that list and say all of them were having championship years the list would be
Yankees
Knicks
Giants
Mets
Rangers (tough call between the rangers and jets)
Jets
The rest of the teams barely exist so I not even going to list them. Honestly I sell tickets for a living and when the Knicks are a good team there is no hotter ticket in the city. They play in Madison Square Garden in the middle of the greatest city. As far as tourism, people all over the world come and see two teams and two venus only and they are the Yankees at Yankee Stadium and the Knicks at MSG. We all love the Giants here but when question asked is list the “importance of the profesional sport teams in NY metro area” the Giants will always be third in line. When the Knicks were good in the 90’s it was the hottest and most expensive ticket in the city, the Garden changes everything.
I think you can argue Knicks Giants
but you have a good point.
I remember in the 90’s in May during the NBA playoffs the Yankees were an after thought and the whole town was wrapped up in the KNICKS. They are a big deal when they are good.
My list
Importance
Level one
Yankess
Giants
Knicks
Level Two
Mets
Rangers
Level THree
Jets
Level 4
Devils
Islanders
Nets
I broke it down into levels because too me it’s too close to call within those levels amognst those teams. Level two is very close to level one the only reason why it’s seperated is becasue a. Hockey is not as popular as the big 3 sports and the Mets do not have the long history of the other teams in the top three. Level 3 is substantionally bigger than level 4 in that it’s newsworthy and will creat a buzz as compared to the level 4 teams but not close to the other two levels.
Classy I’ll just rank em how I see it right now and historically.
Giants
Devils
Mets
Yankees
Knicks/Rangers (Cablevision more or less owns both of them)
Nets
Jets
Yankees are lower because the Steinbrenner family has had some issues over the years. They are the most successfull and popular but not the clasiest, though, DJ is as classy as they get.
For this one I looked considered ownership and Front office competance as a big factor. Unfortunaltey all of the local teams have had issues with ownership compentance over the years but some have been worse than others
