Osi interview, thanks to 'SBaker'
[UPDATE: 02/04/10 4:08 PM EST -- Osi was also apparently on WFAN today. Per Ernie Palladino, he was much more strident in his remarks to Mike Francesa. Sorry gang, but this one looks like it could get ugly.]
One of Big Blue View's long-time community members, 'SBakerTheTouchdownMaker,' works for an Indianapolis sports talk radio station, XL 950. The station had New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora -- who seems to be everywhere these days -- as a guest Thursday afternoon.
'SBaker' was kind enough to send along an mp3 of the interview for your listening pleasure. Osi is a terrific talker, and sounded truly bothered by what happened to both him and the Giants in 2009.
Osi was pleasant and did not rant and rave. But, he did not back off his statements about not accepting a pass-rush specialist role. Give the interview a listen and see what you think.
Oh, and make sure you thank our man 'SBaker' for passing this along.

I like the way hes sounding in that interview
he knows he needs to play better football himself along with the team. hopefully this scheme is as nice to Osi as he thinks its going to be.
i really feel Osi will be back to his dominating form this year. 12 sacks.
Give me work release or give me death - #17
and thank you SBaker!

let's hope he retakes his staring job from kiwi
if only because i’ll never forgive kiwi for that awful “bear hug” tackle on vince young his rookie year.
Osi's also on espn here
http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=4886664
What strike me is this:
“The team’s going to be back, I’m going to be back, everything’s going to come out right”
Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.
When there's a WILL there's a WAY
Osi did show respect
To Coughlin and Reese when he talked to Francesa. He isn’t going all Shockey on the Giants at this point, but it’s a tricky situation.
He's gonna be a beast again...
…especially if the rest of the D improves under Fewell.I see alot of potential there. So stop hating on Osi and the rest of our boys!
I like....
I actually like what I read/heard from OSI…I think having his pride hurt will motivate him in a great way this season…He’s pissed and he will be fully recovered..Look out …Heeeeeeee’s baaaaaaaack
i dunno maybe I just like the colors
How is it the coaches fault that he failed to execute well enough to remain a starter?
It’s not like they took him out of the lineup for any other reason than he he just didn’t excel.

ummm well
he was not the only 1 under performing..the coaches should always put the players in the best position to do make plays..Osi ,not having his full health was not always put in the best position to do well..He was not the sole reason the run D collapsed..
i dunno maybe I just like the colors
Osi was atrocious in run coverage...
the coaches put 2 and 2 together and put him in as a pass rush specialist.
If all Osi wants to do is fly upfield with his head chopped off…well, that’s what a 3rd down pass rush specialist does…and that’s what Osi did.
They did put him in position to succeed…but like the rest of the D, he didn’t.
Rectum? Damn near killed em!
please stop with that
that is not why they benched him. There are plays designed for him to use his speed move.
he was benched because the tackles were manhandling him, not because he was flying of the los trying to get to the QB
by mclaren_is_the_best on Feb 4, 2010 8:49 PM EST up reply actions
stop with that?
That’s what he did. Period. AND get manhandled by tackles.
I know what I saw.
Rectum? Damn near killed em!
You know thats not why he got benched
those plays where he goes to the outside of the tackle are designed that way by the DC.
He doesn’t just go up there for fun knowing that its easily possible to get a big play from that
by mclaren_is_the_best on Feb 4, 2010 9:01 PM EST up reply actions
Exactly..
Osi’s going for the big play instead of using his moves. He goes up and tries to swat the ball.
Countless times watching the Giants…’there goes Osi..running himself out of the play".
You think BS tells him to run around with his head chopped off?
Rectum? Damn near killed em!
I thought we are talking about running plays
not passing downs. (even though Osi running with his head chopped off isn’t any different than Tuck bouncing around the olineman 10 yards away from the QB even though he doesn’t get hate for that!)
by mclaren_is_the_best on Feb 4, 2010 9:14 PM EST up reply actions
Running plays..swallowed by OT's (does nothing)
Passing plays…runs upfield with his head chopped off (occasional Sack+FF…otherwise, nothing)
Rectum? Damn near killed em!
Kiwi didnt do any better
against the panthers or vikings
and on 1 of stewart’s biggest runs they made tuck look like a fool

We're a very critical crowd, us BBVers!
all i can say is, according to all we’ve all ever heard about these injuries, they take a full year to recover. we all judged Osi’s performance this year as if he were 100%. but, as i said, according to all we know, he wasn’t. so let’s just let it be, let training camp, pre season, regular season roll around and then make our judgments then.
Agreed, but didn't we play essentially the same defense we hav for the last two years?
by giant fan since 57 on Feb 4, 2010 8:25 PM EST reply actions
I guess technically we did
but everybody played like crap this year
by mclaren_is_the_best on Feb 4, 2010 8:48 PM EST up reply actions
Let's keep Osi
I think he will be back to his former self. He is not happy to not be playing every down, so he’s going to fix it. Sounds good to me.
Yawn
I’m tired of Osi already. Let him suck it up and play his way back to starting RE. Otherwise, STFU.
osi sounding a little arrogant
through that interview it sounded like Osi believes he deserves a starting spot regardless of his play especially when he said that he can’t go through something like what happened last year again. If he wants his starting spot back, he is going to have to beat out tuck and kiwi for it. Just because he had a couple of good seasons, doesn’t mean he gets to be a starter for the rest of his career.
thanks for sharing this Ed
i had fun with it. it’s too bad we couldn’t get him on the show to talk about happier things, like Super Bowl rings, and 5-hour energy drinks.

maybe he wanted the first line

keep osi
i’m listening to the francesa interview, he sounds totally reasonable. francesa could’ve baited him a little bit more, like asking him about kiwi and why he’s a less deserving starter or something controversial like that.
Chemistry
Success needs team work:
It was clear to me the Giants players and the DC did not have the CHEMISTRY.
Towards the end of the season most of the defensive player’s minds were not on the game. OSI especially, Team work includes coaches and players.
Anyone ever played team sports knows chemistry is one of the most important factors.
s.
Osi will be back in 2010
I think Osi is just upset and a little embarrassed how he and the rest of the defense played last year, he was coming off a knee surgeory that generally takes 2 years to fully recover from. I think he is going to work harder then ever this offseason and be back stronger then ever next year. Osi and this defense are going to dominate next year!
I am praying
that the failings of the DL can be put on coaching and scheme, and that this year the potential we had talked up for that line comes to fruition
You play to win the game!
