Antrel Rolle for anyone?
Just found a rumor sitting on Yahoo (and originally reported by AZCardinals.com) that Antrel Rolle might be released by the Cardinals this week...
Given that the Giants are going to be dumping some salaries this off-season, and it's looking like an uncapped year anyway, what do people think about signing him to a contract similar to what he's reported to be due from the Cards this year c. $4m? Would surely be one of the better available players around and for just the cost of a salary would definitely be an upgrade over CC, Mike Johnson, Aaron Rouse, etc?
Anyone else think the Giants should make a run at him if the Cards do let him go?

We will not
be the only one if we do – similar fanposts are on BGN and BTB plus some others no doubt.
Given how Rodgers lit up the Cardinals secondary in the playoff game he may not be such an upgrade that we think he could be or could achieve in the draft.

Rodgers is awesome though
one of the top QB’s in the league. Rolle’s definitely an upgrade over anything the Giants have at safety. He’s not Ed Reed or Troy Polamalu, but if I were Jerry Reese I’d definitely at least put a call in to his agent. What do they have to lose?
2009 Did Not Happen
As long as the price is reasonable
I’d say definetly go for him. He’s a former CB who does well in zone coverage who isnt afraid to hit. Him and KP in the back would be nice. Whether we sign him or not, we still shoul dgo for a saftey in the 2nd or 3rd round. I say we go for Myron Rolle in the draft at some point but I want to find out a little bit more about his career. If anyone has anything on him please send it to me.
These are the guys to talk to about myron

Note: TN is probably the most realistic about players that I’ve seen. They wont sugarcoat anything.
My own opinion (as i type this from a dorm at FSU) is that Myron is a great tackler, takes great pursuit angles, and is capable of being a leader on defense. Doesn’t have great hands though.
Thanks a bunch
I always loved to see a saftey that was a great tackler though. And as long as the offense doesnt go behind him and he makes the play, I’ll deal with no hands.
Antrel Rolle
from the U.
I’m with Free, lets sign him up.
I really want to spend a late draft pick on the punter from Michigan , with the Guns. Field position is so important now. I am sick of teams always starting their drives from the 30 or 40 yd. line. Hey Free, when is the last time we had a kick off go into the end zone?
+1
Let’s go get Zoltan – guy looks like a beast and anything that can help field position has got to be a good thing…let’s hope JR takes a quick look at BBV and checks out what the fans want and spends one of those late draft picks on this guy…
Slam dunk
Let’s go for an All Miami U safety corps.

Yes. Pick him up. Although it probably won’t happen since he want to
play with Miami.

I couldnt agree more. Field position is key. Think of how many yards/game he could save us with each punt and kickoff. Better than a Stoney Woodson or Rhett Bomar pick.
I'd sign him
Turns 28 at the end of the season, he should have some good years left.
It is a gaping hole, does anyone want to see Rouse or Johnson as starters? I’d be happy if they were going to cut one of them (because they had 3 better guys).
It wouldn’t shock me either, if the Cards figure they are in re-building with Warner retiring. They might shed salary, keeping only cornerstone guys.
Rouse
I don’t have a huge problem having Rouse start. He’s not star player material, but he’s adequate, and good against the run. That said, the Giants might not go for it. Last two years we’ve tried to grab a Safety and both times they’ve fizzled out against us. These stopgap Safeties aren’t cutting it.
Good point
I like Rouse; I think he was in a bad position, but I would prefer him as a back-up or a role player rathe rthan a full time starter. I thought he covered okay, I don’t know why people jumped on him.
Yep..
I would take him, he’s not a kid or a rookie, and hey, they can have an U duo at safety too.
In fact, if I had a choice him or Dansby, I would take him (that should tell you how bad our safeties were last season, imo).

He's def an upgrade
over what we have now. He’s put up some good stats over his career and is a solid player. But how much is he really asking for? Maybe when can afford him after we dump a few guys.
15 is a good number
Yeah lets go get him if they're stupid enough to just toss him out there...
…and get Dansby too,any needs we can fill without costing draft picks is butter!!That gives us so much advantage in the draft to not be pigeon-holed!
The only safety the Eagles gotta worry about is the harness on the forklift that gets Andy Reid out of bed

Eagles coulda done something in the playoffs if they kept their safety
by FreeBradshaw on Feb 22, 2010 4:13 PM EST up reply actions
The Giants safeties handed cups of water (like in marathons) to WR’s as they ran by them all season.
yes..they did.
The Giants safeties actually ran for safety every time a WR came by.

Well...
I just know I kept quoting Vincent Lombardi during last season’s ugliness:

I choked on my lunch laughing at that. Thanks Free!

I wouldn't give him such a big contract but
Rolle will be a clear upgrade on what we have at safety so it makes perfect sense. JR would be a fool to not at least give his agent a call
by mclaren_is_the_best on Feb 22, 2010 4:23 PM EST reply actions
I'm pretty sure that JR will "look at everything" and have all bases covered.
Bleeding Blue since 1962
Sure
Let the Eagles grab him, he’s an OK player, but no where near elite. Though, compared to the awful safeties around the NFL, he might as well be considered in the top 3 when he’s shouldn’t be.
Anyway what does it matter? He’s more than likely going to Miami unless some team overpays him. What player wouldn’t want to go to Miami? Lol
Sadly enough
many players are only looking to get that $$$$$$ (Ahem Haynesworth)

Yeah, but you're barking up the wrong Palm tree in Miami if you want a big payday
The Tuna won’t let them overpay for anbybody.
Bleeding Blue since 1962
Prob true
But if he really wants to play in MIA I’m sure he will settle for a couple Mill less. Look what Jason Taylor sacrificed to play in MIA. Rolle is not quite at the stage of his career and a bit more productive, so he wont be taking an extreme paycut.

I dunno..
Didn’t the former Aints just win one?

they surely wont with #5

The Giants have 3 since I have been watching them and I am sure the Eagles will ...
…always have the possibility of being a nice little regular season team.
A couple things about the contract...
He isn’t due $4m this year – he’s due a $4m roster bonus. That plus a $8m base salary is $12m, and the only safeties worth that kind of money are named Polamalu and Reed.
I’m not sure what it will cost to bag Rolle, and the answer to the question of “Should the Giants sign Rolle” is obviously “Depends, how much will it cost?”. I expect he would pull down Chris Canty money – like Canty he is a young free agent, and he is better relative to his position than Canty but Canty plays a position that is generally better paid. That’s 6 years at $7 mill/year to put it in perspective.
Antrel Rolle and were he will land
Rolle had a contract for $8 million + roster bonus of $4 million, but that was had. New team new contract, we will see what shakes and with who. Giants will have a shot at him and Daren Sharper. If the Giants can sign 2 free agents and then take 2 or 3 in the draft that would be real good

Yep..
If the Syracuse grad were younger…Overachiever, give him credit.
by Great Gatsby on Feb 23, 2010 2:25 PM EST up reply actions
i would like that. He is a great safty and if he is not that much then take him. With this we probaly wont draft a safty then.i would also like dansby or ryans
I still think we need to draft a safety in the first 3 rounds
Even if we do sign a veteran safety. Our depth last year was terrible at the safety position. Once KP went down we had a glaring hole in the middle of the field. One guy is not going to cut it for the Giants. We need options especially if KP struggles to return to form. On a side note, I’m kinda the opposite of Zillag, and I’m pushing my chips in for full recoverys for our boys in blue who were IR casualties last year.
