I'll take Demeco Ryans please
even tho he is a restricted FA, i am still heavy on the bandwagon that the Giants need to give up whatever necessary to get this guy if the Texans let him hit the market. Consensus around BBV is that it will cost a first and third pick minimum. My question to everyone is how much is too much to pay for this guy who is only 25 years old, would be an immediate star, and could run the Giants D for the next 5-6 years? would you be willing to give up the first and third and take a good portion out of the wallet for him? if you wouldn't, why not?
I understand the arguement of why would we give up picks for this guy when Dansby is there for the taking without giving up the picks. I think questions is answered simply with thier ages. 25 vs 30. Dansby would give us 3-4 good years TOPS, and thats being very generous. Ryans is an easy 5 year starter, and possibly more.
Thoughts?

ahhhh, the demeco ryans topic...
we were talking about this on the draft board at espn.
first of all, let me say this, i love ryans…he’s a pure 4-3 MIKE. He’s not an OLB and he’s not coming from a 3-4 defense. On top of that he’s familiar w/ playing in a tampa2/cover2 defense.
Not to mention he’s younger than dansby…
I actually went to the Houston board and inquired about Ryans…apparently he’s not a great coverage guy, but can go sideline to sideline, and of course stop the run.
I think Houston is actually trying to find an identity as well…I think some of the folks down there are getting sick of all the coverage Ryans is having to be responsible for.
but ultimately i will say this….it’s not going to happen.
JR will not give up a 1st and a 3rd, and i really can’t see Houston letting him test the market….
i guess it’s always nice to dream though….

arg...
if you put a gun to my head…..for a 1st and 3rd NO.

i honestly think its worth the first and third
it would just be an immediate, long term fix to one of thier biggest problems. even if we used each pick this draft, theres a slim chance they successfully correct each defensive problem the team has. doesnt it make sense to sure up an extremely important position right now, and hopefully get a top flight S with round 2 pick?

I look at it this way
If a first and a third may be required to get Ryans, and he’s with the Giants for the next 5+ years, why not pocket those picks and use them to move up to get McClain, who is considered to be a franchise LB that we can have for the next 10+ years?
I’m only looking at this through the value, potential, the flaws that may have been exposed and the potential years of quality service that can be achieved!
very good point.. ill be happy if the gents take that route too

Lol
There is no absolute way the Texans are going to deal Ryans here. Unless the Giants offer some HUGE blockbuster trade, it `aint happening.
a first and third round pick in this years draft is pretty blockbuster is it not

Nope
That would not be enough to sway Houston. Throw in a 2011 pick or a player, then maybe. But regardless, Houston’s just not going to give away their young, franchise, pro bowl MLB for an extra 1st round pick. It’s always fun to fantasize about these types of things I guess, but it`s just not happening.
they have no choice.......
either they match the contract the Giants offer him or they’re do a 1st and 3rd.
…that’s it. The Texans have no choice if they don’t match.
There is no “extra picks”.

Wait
So that’s how RFA works out? What exactly do you mean by “or they’re do a 1st and 3rd”, if that made any sense at all.
I guess you mean they HAVE to give away those particular picks? Nothing more (as in a player or different picks), nothing less (no picks offered but a player, etc)? If so, then I guess I was wrong.
If we work out a trade then we can trade whatever the 2 teams agree on
If the Giants want to get him as a free agent they have to compensate the Texans with whatever with whatever tender the Texans put on him. Since he is their starter and I’m sure they like his play he will get the highest tender available which is a 1st round pick and a 3rd round pick.
Other possible tenders are just a first rounder, a 2nd rounder and the original draft spot tender which is based on what round the player is drafted in.
The higher tenders pay the players a higher salary so you cannot just give every player a 1st and a 3rd and hope that someone takes them.

They can always trade his rights

yes they can.
they don’t have to.
If you franchise a player you’re actually supposed to get 2 first round picks if someone else tries to sign him and the other team doesn’t match.
The Giants can do what the Patriots and Chiefs did and just give them a 2nd rounder and a POS (Vrabel…hmm….who on the Giants? CC Brown?)

I see
I got it on wikipedia now. I guess if the Texans don’t offer the contract we make (if we do that is), we have to give away draft picks.
Well that kinda sucks, the Giants need every draft pick it has already. And yes, that includes 3rd round.
Pass.
Ryans is a 2 down MLB. Good against the run, but Cushing was the main all around dude there.
…I like Ryans, but if we’re talking 1st and 3rd picks, I’d rather offer them up for Rolando McClain if possible.
McClain’s potential is greater then that of Ryans.
I’d also rather get Darrly Washington.
Too much compensation.

Last time I watched Texans play
Ryans was a 3 down player, but he isn’t a pass rusher, will spy mobile QBs, or have some coverage assignment.
Cushing was a pass rusher, and as such gets more press
MLB's typically aren't pass rushers. It leaves the short middle too vulnerable
Bleeding Blue since 1962
I'd rather pass on both
But if we had to get one or the other I’d take Dansby and save the picks.
Watching the Cardinals games it just seemed like Dansby is the fastest
guy on the field at times. With him and and a healthy Phillips our D would
be punishing!!!
