Daily NFL Draft Prospect Profile: Mike Iupati, G, Idaho

As we continue our series of NFL Draft prospect profiles let's take a break from the seemingly endless run of linebackers and defensive tackles we have been talking about.

Instead, let's talk about Idaho offensive guard Mike Iupati. After all, Iupati was pretty much the most talked about player at the recent Senior Bowl, he is a player who is likely to be available to the Giants if they sit at 15 in the first round and would probably look awfully nice sliding into the left guard spot in 2010.

Let's take a closer look at the 6-foot-6, 330-pound behemoth.

Star-divide

Mike Iupati Scouting Reports

From SB Nation's Mocking The Draft.

Although it may have been against somewhat lesser competition, Iupati was arguably the best player on the field in every game he played in 2009. Iupati was a consensus All-American and a finalist for the Outland Trophy as a senior. What Iupati showed throughout the year is that he's the premier senior guard prospect in the nation.

The question about Iupati is where to play him. His footwork, arm length and strength is so good he could probably play left tackle. Iupati could be the next Branden Albert – a solid tackle with little upside. Or he could stick at guard and start from Day 1.

Guards aren't generally taken in the first round, but Iupati could be the exception.

From Draft Countdown.

Excellent height and bulk --- Huge frame with long arms --- Outstanding strength --- Physical and aggressive --- Superb athlete with good quickness and agility --- Mobile with great range --- Dominant once locked on --- Uses his hands well --- Explosive with a violent initial punch --- Stout at the point of attack --- Gets a terrific push in the run game --- Intense and Competitive --- Hard Worker --- Team Leader --- Offers  positional  versatility --- Still has considerable upside.

Fantastic blocker with a rare blend of size and athleticism who hasn't yet reached his full potential --- Legitimate 1st Round talent.

Draft Tek calls Iupati "the best pure OG in the draft. His imposing size and nimble feet make him a favorite among the NFL scouts."

Why Iupati fits with the Giants

Rich Seubert did not distinguish himself in 2009, and the Giants undeniably need to begin considering the re-construction of their offensive line. Iupati could challenge Seubert for the left guard job right away, and might even be a guy with the athletic ability to replace Kareem McKenzie at right tackle eventually. If he is as good as NFL scouts think he is going to be, Iupati will be an anchor of someone's offensive line for the next decade.

Why the Giants should pass

Guards are not often drafted in the first round. If that is where General Manager Jerry Reese and scouting guru Marc Ross see Iupati's future then perhaps he isn't the right first-round pick for a team with as many needs as the Giants have. Historically, quality guards can be found in the middle to late rounds of the draft. If the Giants stay true to their history of taking the best player available then Iupati would definitely be a possibility, however.

Pass!!!

We’re pretty rich at OG, considering that we will probably move Diehl back inside. Then we will have an outstanding backup in Seubert. Besides, this guy got destroyed in the Senior Bowl when they tried him on the right side, so the claims that he can play all 5 positions(something Coughlin covets) was certainly not evident on that day.

I think its a possibilty and could quality for a BPA type pick, if he's really this good.

But I don’t see it. I’m willing to bet Diehl’s their LG in 2010, so that leaves Seubert as a good backup…so Iupati would be overkill

Only OL I can see them going for is a OT, such as Tony Davis, Bulaga or Campbell…guys who are adept at the pass block and excellent run blockers.

I don’t mind building the trenches..and Iupati I think is gonna be a very good OG…but so are Diehl and Snee.

Bye, AP :(

Agreed...

getting another OT much higher priority than an OG, especially in the first round. Still thinking our first 3 picks should be focused on defense: S, LB, DL.

If the Giants want

an OT and a S in the first two rounds they are better of going OT first round and S second round as the sum of these two will be better than the sum of S first and OT second.

That leaves DL/LB fr the 3rd round…

"...if he's really this good."

He didn’t look good when Dan Williams was violating him at the Senior Bowl.

by GhostDini on Feb 15, 2010 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

He settled in as the game progressed

He was dominant in the practices and in the senior bowl stuff…that usually counts more.

chalk it up to never being in a game against non-Utah State sized players…..

also chalk it up to big Dan Williams being beast mode

Bye, AP :(

That's what I was saying

To be fair, he is a LG and held his own while playing there. When they moved him over to the other side, Williams and Geno Atkins had there way with him. One of the qualities emphasized about him in earlier scouting reports was his ability to play all 5 OL postions. Well, scratch RG of the list, if that’s how he performed against college level competition..

It was RT not RG (at least thats what I remember), either way

He looked uncomfortable in space.

If he is really as nimble as they say, it might be in his future.

Agreed

What we need is an outstanding RT prospect. Unless they are considering Beatty at LT and Diehl moving to RT and slotting Iupati in at LG, I just can’t see this happening.

Draft

I don’t think we need to draft an offensive player in the draft u would like the first 5th rounds to look like this.
1st-Earl Thomas
2nd-Lamarr Houston
3rd-Pat Angerer
4th-Micah Johnson
5th-Arthur Jones

by hotshot5568@aim.com on Feb 15, 2010 12:10 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Arthur Jones is gonna be long gone by then...

and I think the 2009 Giants showed that when you ignore positions…it can kill you. If they had just drafted one safety in there, one who could be good enough to actually make the team (like say…in the 5th round?), maybe it changes the season? Maybe it doesn’t?

You don’t ignore one side of the ball completely.

There’s a chance none of the players they draft in 2010 makes an impact in 2010, but 2011 and beyond.

They could use a RT to build for the future. A Center would be nice in there, this is a deep draft for centers.

They could even get Maurkice Pouncey in the 2nd round. He’s a OC, but he’s played all over the line. A lot like Damian Woody on the Jets actually, who was a OC when he was drafted buy is not a RT cuz of his athleticism. Pouncey’s 6"5 318, so he’s not small.

Bye, AP :(

OL

I think the o line played decent enough not to warrant a first round pick to upgraded it. Earl Thomas would be a great pick up here. Dan Williams could also be an option. If the giants do go dt myron rolle would be a nice pick up in the third.

If we can;t get an impact defender at 15

It is sooooo tempting to just pick this kid and plug him into the line at LG and not even have to think about the position for 8-10 yrs.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

by CasanovaWong on Feb 15, 2010 1:21 PM EST reply actions

He would be a good pick

if we want Haynesworth, Bunkley and Ratliff to completely destroy Eli this year.

Pouncey may be a good idea

Maurkice Pouncey is rated the best center in the draft. Shaun O’Hara has been playing very well, but he will be 33 this upcoming season. As long as the urgent needs on defense have been met, why not Pouncey as depth at guard and as O’Hara’s eventual successor?

Ed is probably going to get all pissed off at me for saying this..

But you younger folks are very impressive with your statistics on college potentials ..They are so impressive that I can’t understand why I haven’t seen stats on the number of blow-jobs these potential players got in their sophmore year in college.

If Dan Williams blew him up in senior bowl

we should be talking about drafting Dan Williams.

It is time...

The time has come to move Diehl back to his best position, LG with Beatty at LT.
Beatty is a more natural LT, with quicker feet and more athletic. Let’s give some props to
Seubert, just being able to come back from the serious injuies he had years ago, the man has a big heart. Woudn’t mind if he is kept as a backup at all, he can also play
center in a crunch too.

Why Iupati fits with the Giants..

to replace Kareem McKenzie at right tackle eventually…That is what I believe as well.
When Diehl first arrived, played RT as a rookie, then RG, they drafted Snee, moved to LG, cut Luke (and my 25 penalties per year), moved to LT. I wouldn’t take this kid at #15 though, and he played for a smaller school as well.
