Disgruntled OLB Joey Porter has just been released by the Dolphins after only 3 seasons, one being a career year while the other 2 were very forgettable. Porter is definitely past the prime of his career, but that prime did see him as one of the most feared linebackers in all of the NFL and a sack threat at all times. Porter is considered to be the very type of locker room nuisance that the Giants have tried to avoid (Shockey, Tiki, now even Osi), as his constant whining in Miami has shown. But he is also a locker room leader and provides a team with a type of fierce competitiveness that the Giants simply lacked on defense last season. I think a sack threat from our linebackers is something that has been missing in the Giants since the super bowl season. If you are able to produce pressure from your second line then your front four will have a much easier job of beating their man and getting to the quarterback. Porter could produce that dynamic force that the Giants have missed from their linebackers in recent years, but conversely he will not help in our linebackers coverage issues. I imagine he will be getting a much smaller contract than the $32 million one he signed with the fins in 2007.
If the contract is reasonable, do you think the G-Men will pursue him? Or more importantly do you think they should?
