Since a major post mortem of the Giants season is underway at BigBlueView, there have emerged 2 streams of thought. Those who believe Eli is not living up to his contract and those who think its not Eli's fault. As is usually the case , the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Since the various excuses(maybe that's too strong a word) made on Eli's behalf are spread over so many comments I am collecting them in one place .
1. Killbride sucks.
2. OL is not doing its job.
3. Recievers run the wrong routes , tip balls , can't get open and generally suck.
4. New QB coach doesn't know what he is doing.
5. Steve Smith got hurt.
6. Defence is not good enough, so Eli has to throw a lot from behind.
There is an element of truth in each of these statements. But put yourself in Couglin's shoes for a second.
You have a RB who loses footballs... solution ? Bench him. You have a 7th year QB who has turned over the ball 30 times in 15 games. Solution? Damned if anyone knows..
A QB of Eli's caliber is not supposed to play the way he has been playing. And when he does? there are limited options because of the way the NFL is structured and because of the diproportionate amount of money one has to commit to a QB.
I am a realist , I don't expect us to get rid of Eli , but maybe a wiser course of action would be to spend a 2nd or 3rd round pick on a (like the Eagles did on Kolb) Just so that Eli knows there is an alternative in the wings.
