I'm still here obviously. I came in and my locker was still here. So that was good. I'm a confident guy, regardless. Football doesn't define me. I know it's my job and everything, and I didn't get it done. But I still walked out with my head high. I had family here, loving on me, and I actually had my pastor from back home here last night. So it was good. I had a lot of support.

good to see dodge is not beating himself up
It should have never been put in his hands. All of veterans had their chance and couldn’t finish the game. Y should we hold him anymore accoutable then the rest. It sucks but its just a loss. Bottom line its time to take care of green bay!!!

Kicking out of bounds
Ironic that it is normally harder to kick a ball and keep it in bounds….
funny point
there’s so much more room out of bounds than in bounds…. why couldn’t he have aimed in literally any direction
Enter the Vicksperience.
Hah
He could have kicked it sideways for all I cared. I was at a bar with a bunch of Eagles fans and everyone was saying “overtime woooo.” It dawned on no one, absolutely no one, that the ball would go anywhere but out of bounds. Astonishing.

Anyone who blames the loss on Dodge doesn't know much about football.

Dodge's punt was terrible
but I don’t blame him nearly as much as other people. I’m more level-headed than that.
The play-calls to pass when the Giants need to run out the clock. Not having the hands team on kickoff coverage when the Eagles were down 14 points. Changing the defense in the 2nd half. Abandoning the RB screens in the 2nd half when it worked in the 1st half against an aggressive Eagles defense. Still calling for deep routes when the Eagles were blitzing.
"I was going to separate from this guy and make him look silly." -- Kevin Boss
My thoughts exactly...
It is unbelievable to me that as an everyday fan.. we seem to be in tune on whats going on in the game more than the coaches are… How did they not see the onside kick coming? okay so they were told it may happen.. but please put your hands team there and make sure that if it does happen your ready!! Why does Gilbride insist on throwing the ball when we need to chew up clock!!! why did our defense not blitz from Vicks left side, so that he’d run to his right where he is always uncomfortable running!! so many factors, the least of which iis Dodge.. I don’t blame him nearly as much!! Elis fumble in the firs game against the Eagle was just as bad if not worse, he’s supposed to be a veteran that should know better.. at least Dodge is a rookie.. I’m pissed about this one!!
At the 7:53 mark I was calculating...
If the eagles score two touchdowns we could still take so much time off the clock the Eagles never would have had enough time to get a third. All they had to do is run for one fisrt down and the clock would have beaten the Eagles no matter how many big plays they made.
Gilbride outwitted himself…..meanwhile thousands of Big Blue View members were screaming at the screen wondering where the “hands team was on the kickoff!”
I guess we need to give Coughlin a pass but running out on the field to publicly berate Dodge was not a classy move.

Disagree about Coughlin
Come on, you gotta be kidding me. This is Coughlin’s life. These coaches work 18 hours a day, seven days a week, and a coach has to expect that when he tells a player to do something, that he will do it. He told him to kick it out of bounds, not a line drive down the middle.
The Giants have a franchise QB and are in position to compete for the title every year for the next several years. They should never have staked our fortunes on a rookie punter, especially when Coughlin has a history of playing field position in close games. Especially with no salary cap this year. It was only a matter of time before he killed us, with the abundance of mistakes Dodge has made. It just so happened that the mistake he made at the worst possible time was the one that cost us a game.
So, even though the rookie mistake was in a way, inevitable, and the real mistake was one of judgement of having him on the team in the first place, I cannot blame Coughlin. It was a cruel thing to do, but professional sports can be a cruel business. It is not the same thing as telling a player to score a TD. There are guys on the other side of the line who are paid to stop him. No one was preventing Dodge from kicking that ball out of bounds. It was all up to him, and he failed.
he has no other option
but to take this and learn from it….if hes really a man, he will use this as fuel for the fire…good players always do
wake me up when Tom Quinn is gone
Dodge (and Tom Quinn for that matter)
are the typical NY sports fan scapegoats. They were the “obvious” people to blame at the end, so they get all the blame.
Dodge screwed up. Maybe Quinn screwed up as well. DeOssie screwed up with a 100mph snap up around Dodge’s head.
Lot of reasons to go around here for what happened. They were included, but not the sole reasons.
Dodge hopefully knows that and keeps his head.
Just like Jackson’s fumble of the punt, it was a freak occurrence that left everyone bumbling trying to recover in its wake.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
You can hardly just blame Dodge, that's for sure
but a considerable amount of the blame for this loss does and should go on Quinn. The offside kick, the punt return…and the fact is, this isn’t an aberration. It’s been THIS BAD for years now…a change is absolutely necessary.
John Olerud, Hall of Famer. Got a nice ring to it.
Giants special teams have been bad since they were the NY Giants.
change will just bring a new name to blame when the STs sucks.

Parcell's special teams weren't bad
Dave Meggett, Sean Landetta, etc. They were pretty far above average, iirc.

this moment could actually be his defining moment
its hard to imagine it getting worse for him, and if he can realize that, he may finally overcome the nerves and that “worst case scenario” that may be chiming in his head before every punt…..this may calm him down and punt with less pressure and to the potential he has…i will always be rooting for him

I dont get all of the Dodge defending
And Dodge love. He is a TERRIBLE punter. It’s not a freak occurrence like the Jackson muff. He has dropped punts, shanked punts, hit low line drives. Who cares if he is a rookie. It’s not like punting is complex and after he learns the “system” he will be better.
The loss isn’t completely his fault, I understand that. But the dude isn’t a good punter.

Wish we got to see it once in a while. So we put up with all of his mistakes in the off chance he hits a 60 yarder? I’m not saying I want Feagles back.

I don't coach 'em up well.

sorry...but its true.
Mesko’s a rook and does a lot of the same things. If its less frequently, fine, but its still there.
And Mesko has a lot of dud punts too. The Patriots just have a bunch of mid-round drafted athletes to cover the punts.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
Lets break it down. Dodge is the holder on XP’s and FG’s but is terrible and has to be replaced. Dodge has just flat out dropped punts. He has had to see a sports psychologist. He couldnt even punt the ball near the sideline on that last punt.
Is this mental midget the guy we want backed up to our end zone in the playoffs??? I dont think so.

Rookie excuse for a punter is weak
He’s not out there reading defenses, lining up players, or calling plays. There is little thought involved for a punter. He should be able to kick just as well as a rookie in the NFL as he did as a senior in college. I’m tired of the rookie excuse.
That being said, the loss yesterday falls on everyone, not just Dodge.
I thought he punted pretty well yesterday
before the last one. It seems like he’s actually a good punter, but a head case.
"We were very much aware of that. There was a lot of phone call-type things going on in the room." -- Tom Coughlin
I agree
Dodge should be fired. Punter is the cushiest gig in all of football. if a punter sucks, as dodge so obviously does, then why is he on the team? i would take consistency over the 50% chance of one of dodge’s booming punts. yes he isnt the only reason the giants lost. but he still blows. i guess they can let him finish out the season but i would be looking for a replacement immediately. and i wouldn’t feel sorry about firing him either. he got paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to kick a football on 4th down and he failed at it. time to find another profession.
HELLO HELLO MR WILPON... BUY THAT MANSION. WE DONT NEED A CONDO.
I mean how long should we
wait for a friggin punter to finally “get it”???

Dodge vs Feagles (Rookie Year Numbers)
Feagles 1988 New England Patriots 16 games — 91 punts 3,482 yards —38.3 avg
Dodge 2010 New York Giants 14 games 61 punts 2,762 yards 35.2 avg
Feagles wasn’t very good his first year either and look how good he became.

It's not about avg yards
It’s also about hangtime. Dodge too frequently has very little.
When you don't know that you don't know, it's a lot different than when you do know that you don't know. - Bill Parcells
Dodge also get bailed out by low line drives that roll
because they are so bad that the punter return can’t up to field the punt in time.
I still can't get over this loss
Usually by now I’m fine but its killing me. I still keep thinking they won the game. I’m starting to hope there is a lockout next year these game are too much for me.
I agree Landeta.....
now I have to go home and see it on the news, on ESPN and dang monday night football. God give me strength.
What's the website for unemployment in NJ?
I guarantee you the Giants try out punters tomorrow and they should. If you tell someone to kick the punt out of bounds and they are a professional punter, they should be able to do it. I mean stand sideways and punt it. This guy cannot follow directions.
If the Giants just turned it over on downs, at least the Eagles would have to earn a touchdown. Dodge started a free play for a very explosive player. He didn’t lose the game on his own, but he put the cherry on the whipped cream.
Sorry, but we have games to win. NFL stands for not for long. There must be a man in this country who can punt better than Dodge. And follow simple directions. Sorry , but he gets paid a fair amount of money to do his job. He can’t seem to do it. Next!

wake me up when Tom Quinn is gone
Fire Dodge?
If you fire Dodge you better fire Manningham, Tom Quinn and Perry Fewell too because they were all just as big factors in that loss. I actually like Dodge a lot. Yeah, the punt should have gone out of bounds, but I also expect our Special Teams to have the decency to stop a punt returner with the game on the line. People are worried our coverage team would give up the return? I was worried our defense would give up the big play.
I think this guy is going to catch way too much crap for this mistake, but I hope everyone gets over it because Dodge is pretty good actually. He had some pretty good kicks yesterday. Nothing mind numbing or amazing, but still some pretty darn good ones.
I'm sure he is a good kid
However, as I stated in an early post. Two things we know now about him:
1. He has a great leg
2. He chokes in big moments
When he has to hit a good punt, I mean has to, he can’t right now. In the future that may change but right now he is what he is. If the Giants are going to the playoffs (that’s a big if right now) is this the kicker we want. What happens if he drops a snap, shanks a ball, or something else that contributes to a loss? Ask yourself this question as well…if Tynes was choking in big moments would he still be here? Would you still want him?
I want more JPP and I want it now!
Maybe you guys should be blaming the D

"I had family here loving on me"
Not only is he an awful punter, he also is a complete moron judging by this sentence. “Loving on me”??? No wonder he went to ECU
Coughlin and Reese
Can I just give a major “kudos” here to TC and JR? I was all over TC for running onto the field to berate Dodge; you don’t show up your players like that, especially at their lowest points.
But the bigger mistake would have been just dumping Dodge unceremoniously today.
Look at what happened in Washington last week. The ‘Skins melted down and lost a game they should have won – one with far less implications than our game. Shanahan immediately brings down the axe on the punter – the HOLDER on a terrible snap/botched XP. Not the kicker who missed three kicks, but the punter. Shanahan sought out a scapegoat and he nailed his hide to the wall. It was disgraceful and embarrassing, and along with the McNabb fiasco, Shanahan’s reputation has taken a massive hit.
What did Coughlin do? After the wrongful initial outburst, he collected himself, took responsibility at the microphone after the game, and didn’t blame Dodge, he repeated what Dodge had told him about the kick and kept it in perspective, namely, one more domino in a collapse from hell.
The Giants didn’t react to the bloodlust of the fans who wanted a scapegoat (though, admittedly, I would looooooove to see Quinn’s head on a pike right about now), they didn’t cast the kid aside for a mistake, and they’ll let him play out of it.
There’s no options available at this point who are much more reliable. Dodge still is a rookie punter, and they make mistakes like everybody else.
If he’s a long-term disaster the Giants will let him go. But for today, they made the right decision. Props to JR and TC for taking a breath.

I don't think Smith was cut just for that botched hold...
I think he was also punting poorly…
Not Great . . .
. . . But not enough for the boot either. Certainly not any worse than the available replacements. Shanahan is a master at blaming others for his own failings. See McNabb, Donovan. TC does not do that, and that is the mark of a good man.
Sorry but
I don’t like his response.
How about
1) I did not tell the truth, I tried to punt it out and screwed up, snap did not matter
or
2) I made a terrible decision. High snap does not mean I cannot punt it out.
Be accountable, you made a very bad mistake. Not pinning the whole loss on him, there were many others who screwed up, we’ve reviewed that ad nauseum.
This act about “wow, I am still here and I don’t feel so bad”…are you F* kidding me? Even we fans who are innocent victims feel terrible. The rest of your teammates are devastated, how can you NOT feel bad?
Be accountable, have some remorse, learn the lessons. You are a pro and have to produce, stop the little boy “I am still loved” act.
Jeez , can you imagine LT56 saying this kinda crap? To me, this underscores what I said earlier, he does not have a football head. Maybe someone can give him a clue.
All the Giants should play like Mark Bavaro.

This comment Above from JintsFan is the BEST response today
JintsFan hit it right on the money…most everyone else is missing the pretty important piece of info being lost here….is Dodge seriously going to say how loved he is and how this isnt bringing him down one bit ??? We know it was one of many factors, but hes EXTREMEly clueless at best and at worst someone who just doesnt particularly care too much about his job. Being level headed is one thing, borderline apathetic and boyishly defensive are another. Ive actually rooted for him till this point, but his attitude is of enormous concern going forward..
and jintsfan, were we separated at birth? Can anyone really, honestly, tell me that tom quinn is an ASSET to this team and argue with the fact that he DEFinitley has to go?
Lastly , youre also right, unfortunately few will ever play close to the level of dedication Bavaro had. My favorite athlete of all time for it.
I agree with the accountability point
I, for one, woke up last night replaying the game in my head. When I woke up from this dream I was at the “ok, ok, not the end of the world, just punt it out of bounds and let’s go to OT” moment. Then I realized how that dream ends and I was bummed again at 3 am, or whenever it was that I woke up needed a glass of water and an aspirin seriously badly.
But you have to see quotes like this in context. There’s no point in repeating the “OMG I just f***ed up seriously in my first post-college job and now an entire city hates me, another I can never enter because they are merciless, and the whole football world thinks I’m an idiot” or the “I cried myself to sleep last night.” What do you expect him to say? I remember once when I got fired and I was completely ripped up inside. This was a long time ago and in retrospect I realize how much of a dick my boss was and how lucky I was to have been fired, but when friends or family asked me about it I responded in a rosy manner. Sure, you can say that you feel loved, but it’s clearly a cover. I’m amazed that folks don’t see that.

Totally agree. The guy is not making it any easier for me to feel empathy for him. How about showing some accountability? Instead he comes off like some dumb, coddled hick. Did mommy sit him in her lap and feed him soup in the locker room after the mean ol’ media-devils asked their meanie questions?
Love on this: Soldier Field, January, Devin Hester. This clown better get his frigging head right or he’s going to punt the game away.
practise
maybe if dodge spent more time actually practising punting rather than spending time in the gym trying to get huge biceps this wouldnt have happened. stick to puntig man, if u want to be buff, leave the giants. also i dont give a f*ck if your pastor watched that game. everyone says he’s still young, this is his job and if he cant handle it we should find someone who can
Ripping into dodge
Reese drafts for potential that’s his MO
Dodge has shown in his ROOKIE YEAR that he can hit
50 yards punts that bounce straight up at the one
and 60+ yards punt that completely change field position
Give this Kid some time. He personally hasn’t lost us a game.
The sky is the limit for this kid and he has a great tutor in Feagles if need be.
His pastor was there?
Maybe a new church—or perhaps religion—would be a good idea. Clearly, like Andy Reid, this guy does not have a direct line to the man upstairs.
More seriously, that was a terrible play, a terrible decision, and just about awful in 900 other ways. But blaming Dodge is like blaming the usher at Ford’s Theater for the Lincoln assassination.

since i had a nice long day to think about it, id like to openly apologize to anyone i may and probably did piss off by blaming dodge. as said earlier, he was the obvious reason for the time being, but it was indeed a total team collapse
"Can switching to Geico save you 15% or more on car insurance? Can our special teams cover a punt?"
rookie punters who make crucial mistakes in clutch situations should always be replaced
that’s why I’m so glad Bill Parcells cut Sean Landetta after he whiffed on that punt in the ’85 playoffs.
Wait, what’s that? Parcells stuck with him? And he became the best punter of the 80’s? Huh, strange…
2009 Did Not Happen
Indeed
I think that people also underestimate how hard it is to punt a football. If it goes off your foot a half inch off, then any attempt to direct it is lost. Sure, a QB also has to play with slim margins, but every QB muffs a few throws a game. When you’re a punter it just gets more apparent.
