You can never have enough wide receivers....

A look into the offseason as Jeery Reese has to make some decision about our wideouts

Our Giants have:

Hakeem Nicks, Steve Smith , Mario Manningham, Ramses Barden, Victor Cruz, Derek Hagan, Duke Calhoun, Michael Clayton, Devin Thomas, and we can not forget Domenik Hixon

So the question is who do we keep?

Lets take a look into and evaluate each player:

Hakeem Nicks:

Nicks is becoming Eli Manning's favorite target and emerging as one of the top wide receivers in the league. His wide body helps shield defenders and he has proven that he can deep and get good YAC. He is still learning the art of route running but has from improved in that category from his rookie to sophomore year. Typically, wideouts breakout in their third year so will see what he has in store.

Steve Smith:

Eli's most trusted wide receiver. One of the best possession receivers in the game. Mr. Third Down  is almost unstoppable there. The only nick in his game is that he is not much of a deep threat and that he is not very explosive after the catch. *We have to see how he comes back from Injury*

Mario Manningham:

Manningham is coming along as an explosive player. He still has to work on his route running but he has good hands and gets great YAC. The problem is that his awareness or lack of awareness at times hurts the team but it has improved on year to year.  He still has a very high ceiling so we will see if he reacts it.

Ramses Barden:

The Pharaoh is still a project in work. In the limited time that we saw him he produced. He still is a freak of nature at 6'6'' he has the height going for him. It said to see him finally get a redzone jump-ball and that same play end up on IR. He is still working on his route running which will improve overtime. He has to work on special teams to if he wants to wear his jersey on game days.

Victor Cruz:

Brilliant in the pre-season. Showed good routes against man-to-man coverage and has a knack for finding the football. We haven't seen much of him, but he looks like a nice prospect.

Derek Hagan

Why did we ever cut this guy?. He has proven himself to be a very good special teamer and a reliable  receiver for Eli. He is a good route runner and has pretty good hands. The savvy veteran has even drawn comparisons to Derrick Mason. The only problem is that he does not seem to have much upside. what you see hear is what you get.

Duke Calhoun

The rookie that acts like a rookie. He could not get the playbook down and forced the Giants to look around the NFL for receivers like Mike Clayton, Devin Thomas, and our boy Derek Hagan. Supposed to have really good speed and he has height going for him at 6'4''.

Mike Clayton

A veteran the has be tossed around the NFL ever since his breakout years. Not much upside and he is getting old.

Devin Thomas

The second round draft pick has all the tools to become a good wide receiver. He shown that he is pretty good on special teams. We still wonder what he can do on punt and kickoff returns if he shows he is pretty good he will most likely have an invite to camp.

Domenik Hixon

Has been missed greatly for special teams. His return abilities have been missed but he is only an decent wide receiver. In extended time after Plaxico, he showed that he was not a reliable receiver for Eli. He could have improved from then but we have to see how he comes back from his knee injury.

So tell me Big Blue, who do you think makes it to training camp next year and who makes the final cut in 2011?

my best guesses

how many do we typically keep? 6?

scenario A: we sign SS12
Nicks, Smith, Manningham are locks
Need to choose between Hixon, Hagan, Thomas, Barden and Cruz, if we want 2 special teamers, they’d be Hagan and Thomas… then you probably pick Barden or Cruz as the last guy. If you can deal with only 1 special teamer you get Hagan, and both of the other 2

If we don’t sign SS12 you definitely have to keep Hagan for his slot position affinity. Unless we really want Hixon for the return game I don’t see him coming back. This could also be the end of the road for Barden if they don’t think he’ll progress. Depends on how much the value the potential of Cruz and possibly Thomas.

Any other opinions?

Nicks, Smith, Ham and Barden are locks.

don’t doubt that for a second.

As far as who else, Hixon and Thomas (no matter if he lines up at KR/PR or not this season) I expect to battle it out for WR/PR/KR next season.

Calhoun’s gone, sorry Duke. Clayton ditto.

Cruz is probably back.

Only wild card to me is if they draft anyone. This draft is STOCKED with big, tall fast WRs. I don’t like it, but I guess you can’t count out someone like Jonathon Baldwin, all 6"5 235lbs (and running a 4.4) of him to be drafted if he’s available to us.

But I fully expect the top 4 to be here. And its “pass rushers” anyway. You can still win sans WRs. IF you’re down to DEs off the street, then you’re in trouble.

We keep 6-7

Must keep: Smith, Nicks
Should keep: Manningham, Barden (DA PROJECT)
I’d keep: Hixon, Cruz, Hagan

I believe the Giants keep 7.

Sorry to: Calhoun, Clayton, Thomas.

Although, if anyone offers a 3rd for Manningham, I’m taking it.

my guess

Camp invites:

SS12
The Man
New York Nicks
The pharoah
Devin Thomas
Hixon
Clayton
Hagan
Cruz
A late round draft pick

I think the Duke is cut, he’s shown nothing on offense or special teams to warrant an invite.

Final roster cut:
The Man
SS12
NY Nicks
The Pharoah(that last game showed that he has what it takes in this league. If he had never had that game I would say his job is in jeopardy.)
Hagan
Hixon
Cruz

Clayton, and Thomas will be gone, and the draft pick will go to the PS. The rotation will be Nicks, SS12, the Man, barden, hixon, and Cruz, with hagan being a healthy scratch on gamedays. Depending on what Cruz shows on specials. If not, him and hagan will be reversed.

Yes, I am a Giants fan. Now that we got that out of the way....

Nicks
Steve Smith
Mario Manningham
Victor Cruz
Devin Thomas

I think those 5 will be on the team next year for sure. Barden and Hagan will fight for the last 1 (2?) spots as guys that know the system but mostly play special teams

The real question is...

Who will or should the Giants end up with, who is currently not in the equation??

I say Giants go back to the future and go after Plax as soon as he gets out. Look how Vick turned out? Can you imagine how good Plax will be when he’s focused and motivated? Can you imagine a tandem of Nicks and Plax with Smith or Manningham or Hagan in the slot? Holy Crap!! I’m getting too excited already just thinking about it. I hope Jerry Reese has the balls and the brains to go after this guy… not only to make the Giants passing game (and as a result, the running game) unstoppable, but also to stop one of our divison rivals (Washington maybe?) from picking him up.

I think NY would love to have him back and to give him a second chance, and I think the Giants go back to the Super Bowl with Plax back!!!

Can we...

get a write-in campaign going right now at the Giants’ front office to petition Reese to get Plax back. Can you tell I’m excited about the possibility??

Wide recievers

Most teams have 6 so this is my top 6 depth chart:
1. Steve Smith
2. Hakeem Nicks
3. Mario Manningham
4. Ramses Barden
5. Derek Hagan
6. Dominik Hixon
I would assign Devin Thomas and Victor Cruz to the practice squad and cut Callhoun and Clayton.
