Around SBN: Why We're Skeptical Of LeBron James

Ohhhh That's Why They Drafted J.P.P.

Finally Giants fans we’ve seen the potential of Jason Pierre Paul turn into production for at least one game. I’m not ready to put him in the Hall of Fame yet, but today, my friends is the reason why Jerry Reese chose JPP #15th overall despite being labled as ”raw” and “full of potential”.

JPP not only registered his first career sack, but also his second career sack. Both came a la Osi Strip Sack fumbles.

On top of that JPP was seen all over the field registering six tackles to go along with his two sacks.

He had tackles all over the field (One Special Team tackle, one 14 yards down the field one another one, 10 yards down the field on another).

It was just one game for Jason Pierre Paul, but the production finally matched with what I had been seeing for awhile. He has very good quickness, great pure strength, and a relentless motor. He always hustles. I was NOT a fan of the pick when it first happened, but I’ve seen enough this year to convince me he won’t be a bust. Maybe he’ll never develop into another Tuck, but I don’t think he’s a William Joseph either.

Game Recap

Golden Stars for their helmets

Eli Manning. Eli was without his #1, #2, #4 (Hixon all year though), #5 (Barden), #6 (Victor Cruz), #8 (Sinorice Moss), his number one tackle (Diehl), his center, and his #2 tackle and all he did was throw 24 passes completing 14 of them for 226 yards with 2 touchdowns no interceptions and no fumbles. This was perhaps his best game of his season as he averaged 9.4  yards per pass attempt the highest of the season. I recognize that the Jaguars defense, secondary especially leaves much to be desired and the offense sputtered in the Red-Zone, but they put up 24 points in a game where they were severely undermanned. If Eli plays like this the rest of the year (this is how i always expect him to play) I like the Giants chances.

Brandon Jacobs-Mr. Jacobs when did you arrive in town. Jacobs set a tone for this game that was thrilling for me to see. He came out running with a sense of urgency and power. I was watching the game on my computer, so maybe the streaming had something to do with it, but I could swear that he looked the quickest I’ve ever seen him run. I was very impressed with his game today. His numbers 14 carries for 87 yards don’t tell the whole story. He was impressive. His numbers were hurt a bit because the offense wasn’t able to see the ball much in the first half because the Jaguars were playing keep away and in the second half the Giants had to pass a lot to get back into the game. The Giants need Jacobs down the stretch.

Kevin Boss I’m not the biggest Kevin Boss fan. He’s a nice player and a much better all around tight end then he is a receiving threat, but today I thought was one of the best game’s he’s played in a long time. He had a huge play at the end of the game. I’ll never question his heart of desire and if he plays like this the next few weeks he’ll really help the playoff cause.

William Beatty I’ll have to watch the game again, but it seems to me that the Giants actually attempted a run left this game with Beatty in at LT, which is something they haven’t done in a few weeks. But I’ll have to double check. The Jaguars don’t have dangerous pass rushers, but I can’t blame that on Beatty. He filled in very nicely. Beatty can still very well be the LT of the future for the Giants.

Lawrence Tynes-Sure they were all easy field goals, but after watching too many kickers miss easy kicks this year I have to take a second to appreciate a kicker who was responsible for 11 of the team’s 24 points (3 field goals, 2 extra points).

Jason Pierre Paul-Let’s hope he’s finding himself and this is a sign of things to come rather than the highlight of a career.

Deon Grant? He had 8 tackles. That might be more of an indictment on the Dline’s inability to stop the run the first half. I’ll have to watch again. Give Grant a half star for now.

Terrell Thomas-Perhaps the only Giants player with ball skills. He’s not the fastest player, or the strongest player, but he makes plays. He’s getting better all the time. This defense lacks a dominant Nnmadi Asmough or Darrell Revis type corner, but they have two very above average cornerbacks. He had a HUGE sack at the end of the game that forced Garrard to fumble and end the game (and I think he would have made Garrard victim #6 if the game was going on longer), as well as an interception that might have turned the game.

Justin Tuck/Perry Fewell The post game quotes show that the team rallied around Justin Tuck. Perry Fewell made some adjustments in the second half (blitz more). This defensive line has talent, but I’d like to see more of an ability to hit the passer with a simple four man rush.

Tom Coughlin’s Replay Guy

I’m not sure if it’s Tom Coughlin watching the replays and making the call or if it’s someone up in the booth relaying the message to Coughlin, but whoever it is, is a freaking Wizard. Every time I watch a play live I’m screaming at a huge screw-up by the Giants, and then Coughlin is throwing red flag (what immediately comes into mind is the play in the first Cowboys game where they downed the ball inside the two only to be challenged for a guy stepping out of bounds and being the first to touch the ball).  To me it really looked like a catch and fumble on the Hagan play, but lo and behold here comes Coughlin throwing that flag easing my worries.

Coughlin is the oldest coach in the league, but the best with the biggest piece of technology in the league (replay).

Dunce Caps

Chris Canty. This is suppose to be his week. Canty is a big bodied run stuffing defensive linemen. He needs to clog up running lanes and let linebackers flow to the ball. But in the first half he was non-existent. He’s drawn a lot of double teams this year and played up to his contract, but today not so much.

Matt Dodge-I’m not a proponent of canning Dodge, but jeez does he scare me. In the end his numbers look good as they have all season, but I’m not sure how many more shanks I can handle. He wasn’t terrible, but he wasn’t good either. He lacked consistency, which is kind of the story of the Giants season and specifically Dodge’s season.

Jonathan Goff I don’t think he played terrible, but he’s in the same category as Chris Canty. He needs to be a physical dominating presence in the run game, and he was not. This is the kind of game I want to see Goff thrive in, but today wasn’t his best game.

Osi Umenyiora- Again I’m doing this without watching a second replay of the game, but if my memory serves me correctly on the few times Garrard came running back across the field he rolled to his right (where Tuck plays) and then ran back left where Osi had no containment. He hasn’t  had a sack in a while on a related note. EDIT: Ed gave him a Kudos for being in the backfield all day and inflicting punishment so maybe he played better than I thought. Still, I'd like to see him dominate a game again, which he hasn't done in awhile.

Other Thoughts

This was a great weekend for the Giants, not much could have gone better.

The Ravens disposed of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers pushing them to 7-4 with the Giants.

The Packers lost to the Falcons also making them 7-4, and the Bears beat the Eagles pushing them into a tie with the Giants as well.

The Eagles have to play this Thursday vs the Texans (who might be without Andre Johnson) in a game they should win, but the Bears beat on the Eagles pretty well and the Texans had an easy go vs the Titans so maybe that’ll help out the Giants. Then they have to travel out to Dallas in what could be a tough game for the Eagles if the Cowboys decide to show up for that game.

Before this weekend the Giants could win out and still not make the playoffs, now if the Giants win out they are Guaranteed a playoff spot (because they will win the division).

Things look less gloomy then they did a week ago if the Giants can get past the Redskins next week I think they’ll get back Hakeem Nicks, Steve Smith, Diehl and Andrews which could give them a big boost for the final stretch of the season.

I think it’s good the Bears beat the Eagles a week after the Giants put in a valiant effort vs the Eagles because any aura of invincibility the Eagles had with Vick is gone now.

That’s all I have.

Leave your thoughts and comments.

Have a nice day, everyone.

It is just one game

I was happy to catch him doing some good stuff in my brief views of the game, but he needs to consistently perform before I will be completely hyped for this one (feel a lot better about it than I did when they drafted him… he has been improving steadily as the season has moved along).

JPP's been a fairly solid player all year

its kind of a “shame” he’s got Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora, Matty Kiwaunuka and Barry Cofield stealing all those tackles and sacks.

JPP will be a moster for this team, it was plain and simple to see since training camp. THe only thing he needed was production.

He’ll be our 2007 Tuck going forward. Hopefully as good and takes them to those same levels.

rookies

I’ve been trying to keep an eye on all the guys that were on our collective radar for the draft, and I gotta say I’ve been really impressed.
First of all, it’s important to admit when you’re wrong, so here it is- I was 100 % wrong on JPP, our coaches have done a great job on him and he’s impressing me. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind seeing him coming from different places like they were doing earlier in the season, but overall very happy with his progression.
Other guys- I’ve been really impressed by Earl Thomas, who I thought would have trouble due to his size, but he’s great at reading the field, and he’s contributing on spec teams.

As far as LB’s, Washington has looked the best I think, his speed is an asset. Weatherspoon has also looked great when hes on the field, he gets in passing lanes quickly and moved well yesterday, but he’s been injured a whole hell of a lot so far.
McClain I was wrong on too, he just looks plain slow. He actually had a pick yesterday on an errant throw by Henne, but every game I’ve seen of theirs makes me think he’s too slow to be in that system. I still maintain he will get better, but he’s not a first year contributor like I thought he would be.

Spiller hasn’t had a lot of chances, I think he’ll be a weapon eventually. The other DE’s are not great yet, I don’t think they are athletic enough. All in all most of the guys we were eyeing at this site have been solid.

I wanted Thomas or Weatherspoon

I was right about Thomas being good but wrong so far on Weatherspoon……….i guess the reports about McClain being real slow before draft day was correct and Spiller as been okay but not great………….another great pick by the giants

I was afraid JPP was going to be an "Al Davis" type pick.

It was nice to see him “flash” some ability in pre-season, but now he is contributing in a very solid way during the regular season (as opposed to Sintim that was great in his rookie pre-season and nothing since) – much more of an indication of his ability to learn and turn that athleticish into action.

At this point, I’d have to say it’s a good pick … as long as he continues to progress.

Sure am glad JR snaged this guy, hopefully he keeps on getting better.

I hated this pick thought he was to much of a project to select that high, the kids motor is tremendous looking forward to watching him grow.

I am totally with you there

I wish they would have him out there. He looked good during pre season and definitely got into the backfield a few times.

Well maybe an exaggeration

I meant defensive players specifically.

Terrell Thomas has 9 Interceptions through the past two seasons.

Corey Webster has three

Aaron Ross hasn’t intercepted a ball since 2008

Antrel Rolle has 1 this year (I realize he’s not playing much coverage and doing more blitzing, run stopping)

Kenny Phillips has one this year

The only other defensive back who has made plays on the ball this year is Deon Grant who has three interceptions, which gives him six the past two seasons.

So yes, really.

Other than Terrell Thomas most of the Giants defensive players (secondary specifically) don’t get their hands on the ball and take it away.

by giantsgab.com on Nov 29, 2010 8:42 PM EST reply actions

you don't judge ball skills based on INTs...

deflections, big hit timing..and of course the eye test all play into this.

Webster doesn’t get picks cuz no one throws in his direction. I know Rolle and Phillips have good ball hawk skills.

Actually I’d say TT among the starters has the worst ball hawk skills, but he is pretty good.

I disagree

I’ve read a lot of your comments and think you’re pretty insightful bit I respectfully disagree with you on the definition of ball skills.

Stats can be arbitrary, but getting the ball away from the offense to me is ball skills.

I would consider, deflections and big hit timing a part of good defense, but not ball skills.

I think you can be a very good cornerback without having great ball skills. There are many cornerbacks who are very good cornerbacks who just can’t intercept the ball. But they’ll knock it away they’ll force bad throws and they’ll make tackles to limit yards after the carry.

I know that Kenny Phillips HAD good ball skills, I don’t think he’s back there yet from his injury. And he’s been very good tackling this year and good in coverage, but I haven’t seen him make a ton of plays on the ball this year. He’s playing pretty well, but he hasn’t shown the ball skills I know he had in 2008 before his injury.

I think Antrell Rolle has great ball skills, he hasn’t used them this year because of his position in this defense.

Webster has very good coverage skills and he doens’t get thrown at a ton, but I’m not sure he has great ball skills. Of course he’s made big plays like the one in Green Bay to seal a Superbowl Berth…

Webster’s the better cornerback then Thomas in my opinion, but I think Thomas makes more plays on the ball and can get the ball away from the offense more then Webster, or Phillips.

I’ll agree with Rolle though. He has good ball skills, and is very good with the ball in his hands after he gets the ball, but this year he’s been asked to play more of a run stuffing qb pressuring Safety.

And while Rolle has been known to blow some assignments he clearly has Ball skills.

Just my humble opinion.

I hear what you are saying...

but what Rorscharch is saying when people don’t throw at Cweb is; People Don’t throw at Cweb. The average fan watching the game can see that teams throw at TT constantly. They run to his side as well but you see that because TT usually plays behind Osi (whereas Cweb will be on Tuck’s side)…most of the time, but that’s besides the point.

the point is, when you are getting targetted 10-14 times per game (TT) vs. 5-7 times or less vs. (Cweb) you are going to have a disparity in INTs, PDs, and Tackles.

but when you look at stats like Success % on Attempts you will see that Cweb is destroying TT in that regard. Also, in yards per catch….again, Cweb > TT.

when ESPNNY did the NYG/NYJ breakdown earlier this season Cweb had better stats than Revis. WR’s were averaging 6 1/2 yards per catch and his was success ratio was 66%….which is kinda bonkers.

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/post/_/id/2503/football-scientist-giants-vs-jets-part-2-the-secondary

Now I know how none of this addresses your “ball skills” argument….but you have to take that into consideration. Others CBs like Asomugha who get no passes don’t get a lot of INTs either, doesn’t mean they don’t have ball skills.

Also, for the record, I think TT came up with like 1 or 2 gimme INTs of tip balls. 1 for sure (last game). Cweb’s INTs were both a thing of beauty…but that’s just MO.

AND…lol…I think KP really doesn’t get a lot of chances either b/c in Cover 2 he’s usually on Cweb’s side and Rolle is on TT’s side. So when the ball is not going to Cweb, it’s not going to KP either.

by andiamo708 on Nov 29, 2010 10:20 PM EST up reply actions

that being said...

yeah, it’s really frickin’ annoying when Cweb gives up that catch on 3rd and short for 7 yards and a 1st down…I know this. I get pissed too and want to take my jersey off and put my Nicks Jersey on, and than somehow or another I forget about why I was mad at Cweb and go back to watching the game …. knowing that he was going to shut ish down the rest of the game…and he did.

Like he did in Philly vs. Djax all game after he gave up a few early catches….the horror…I know…holding Djax to 50 yards. Maclin went off for like 100+ and TT was primarily on him.

they don’t match up w/ WR but sides of the field and Maclin was on his side A LOT

by andiamo708 on Nov 29, 2010 10:31 PM EST up reply actions

yea i agree with andiamo

T2 has all the stats because he gets targetted a LOT, and I mean a LOT. He’s the most targeted CB in the league according to ProFootballFocus and a big part of that is playing across from cweb

by Nfpdawg on Nov 30, 2010 5:23 PM EST up reply actions

I know the play you are talking about with Osi....

It was the play when Tuck almost had the sack and he came all the way around the other end of the field for a 1st down. I was also wondering where Osi was….he pursued DG so far that he got caught up in the wash as well.

usually i’m screaming at Osi for getting too high in his pass run and over pursuing the QB….on that play I wish he had done exactly that. Garrard woulda had no where to go.
