Honoring Richie Seubert

This post sponsored by Vicks

These 'Who Powered Through' posts are meant to honor players who overcame pain or tremendous obstacles to be successful. I really could not think of a current New York Giant who embodies 'powering through' more than offensive lineman Rich Seubert.

Remember that Seubert suffered what should have been a career-ending injury in 2003 when he broke the tibia, fibula and ankle in his right leg during a game against the Philadelphia Eagles. It took five surgeries and two seasons, but Seubert returned to the Giants as a reserve in 2005. He has been a starter, and a largely successful one, on one of the league's best offensive lines since 2007.

I would say that qualifies him as a player who 'powered through.'

Not even mentioning how good he is doing after supposedly being washed up, guys like him make it hard to worry about our Oline, even if that units currently being attacked by the injury monster

If you cant beat him, break him, if you CAN beat him than break him anyway

A True Big Blue Player

With players like him on our roster, why should we even be worried. It is people like him and others on our roster that make us so successful. Let’s Go Giants.

Being a New York Football Giants fan or a player is not a label but it is a calling!

Nostalgia

I’ll never forget the clip of him talking to O’hara right before “the drive” against the Patriots. Gives me chills.

He’s been great this season, far exceeding everyones expectations. The way he has seamlessly shifted positions has been nothing less than impressive.

that was great

plus the look him and the rest of the OLine gave to Strahan as he kept screaming “17-14 we score we are world champions” You can tell they were thinking “dude shut up and let us do our job”

hahaha

I remember the first time I saw it, me and my dad were watching and he says “they do not want to hear this from him”. Then when Stra was interviewed in America’s Game, he said “I didn’t believe 17-14 myself, I was just trying to pump these guys up”

go Richie

Rich Seubert has been one of those who drove the car, rather than just rode in it, to use a Parcells expression. One of my favorite Giants. Next year, with an embarrassment of riches, we may have Shawn Andrews, David Diehl, or Mitch Petrus starting at left guard. Ideally we can keep Seubert around as a backup, but I don’t know if team loyalty is enough in this era for him to accept a backup role after starting for so long.

Suebert = Ed Block Courage Award recipient, 2003

This is that annual honor voted on by teammates that is given to the player that shows the most grit, determination, heart, and courage. Richie was the Giants recipient in 2003 when he shattered his leg.

Fred Robbins won it last year for coming back from surgery and playing through the pain. If I had to guess, I would say that at the midway point this year either Shawn Andrews or Barry Cofield are the favorites for their demonstrated ability to overcome adversity (albeit of a different nature in both cases)

Yes Ed, this is what I am talking about. A spotlight for the unsung hero.

I feel bad when I forget to give credit to a guy who deserves a tremendous amount of it. The fact that Rich came in as an undrafted free agent one year and was a starter the next year says a lot about his talent , drive and work ethic above anything else. The fact that he is still playing effective football after the surgeries, speaks volumes. I’m glad that he is being rewarded by the football god with this post among other things. Ed, maybe you can make this a weekly thing?

The Vicks post

Is going to run for a few weeks. You guys can feel free to offer suggestions of both present and past Giants. Maybe I will post the guidelines sometime next week.

I remember how

badly he was hurt years ago, never thought he would play again. Keep bringing the lunch pail there Richie, perseverance should be his middle name..

Truly a great comeback story..incredible..

and I like his view that any of them can and will play any position…I’m sure glad he’s a Giant..
