Giants 17, Bears 3: Defense Dominates

Now THAT was some New York Giants football.

Ten quarterbacks sacks. Two quarterbacks KO'd. A 129-yard rushing effort from Ahmad Bradshaw. Eight catches for 100 yards from Hakeem Nicks.

A 17-3 victory over the previously unbeaten Chicago Bears. Hey, guess what? As you go to bed tonight your 2-2 New York Giants are tied for first place in the NFC East.

Back with the 'Kudos & Wet Willies' Monday morning.

Dodge is catching a lot of flack, but when you nail punt inside the 5 and the deep cover is at the 10, not running until the ball bounces…That’s gotta change. That was when the game was close and a safety could have meant a lot. That was more frustrating—to me at least—than anything Dodge did last night.

Exactly

Early in the 3rd quarter, the Bears were definately winning the game of field position. Just before we went on the long drive to make it 10-0 I was thinking we are going to get in trouble just on that fact alone.

I really don’t think its too early to bring in punters. I’m not saying Dodge goes but how many more poor games can he have? We need to have some options.

Shades of 2007

First 4 games: one uncompetitive blowout loss (Packers/Colts), one “competitive but frustrating loss” (Cowboys/Titans), one defensive dominated, sack happy win (Eagles/Bears), and another win that unfortunately doesn’t have much in common (Redskins/Panthers). Defense came around big time for a new coordinator in week 4, on the last day of the MLB regular season. Tom Coughlin on the hot seat, big sack day maybe saves his job. 2-2 record, and things look brighter going forward.

Eli > Orton > Cutler

I’ve been listening to Sports Radio here in Chicago (which I never do), just to hear the Bears fans hyperventilating… It’s pretty hilarious. They are talking about how Kyle Orton is having a very good season and maybe they have some regrets about the trade. You’d think the Bears are 1-3 with the way they are carrying on. Funny stuff.

I went to a bar by Wrigley Field. I was there with a bunch of Bears fans of course. My friends were talking trash about how they were going to destroy the Giants. I sat there quietly and just smiled. The game started and the collective groans kept getting louder and louder. It got so ad that they stopped playing music between the commercial breaks. The bar was pretty much emptied out by the fourth quarter. I was wearing my Jacobs jersey and not a peep. Oh… the city is in shock! I cannot wait to see the papers tomorrow. After the Packers win last Monday night they were all convinced that they had the NFC wrapped up. Well, um… not so fast. It was great!

One of my friends who was at the party is an Eagles fan (from Chicago) and it was great watching the Skin’s beat the Eagles then having him around for the night game for extra abuse.

Chicago sports fans are used to losing. They take losing pretty well tho. It’s actually pretty sad. I think the Cubs and Bears have that in common. The key to a fantastic Giants victory, is for me to watch the game in a bar, and not be physcially at the game or watching it from my couch. Oh, and wearing a different shirt – not a jersey helped, too! I’m like Eli – I’m not superstitious, I’m a little-stitious – I now I have a new game day ritual! :)

God, that was a fantastic game. If only our offense could “step up and make big plays” like our re-invigorated defense!

Off the topic

are you a Giant fan because of Eli or other reason.

by SNORKIS on Oct 4, 2010 8:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Used to be a college only fan – went to Ole Miss, hence the screen name. I was 2 years ahead of Eli. Folllowed his career to the Giants. I like Eli, but I love the heart and soul of Giants football. The kind that was played last night – is what keeps me a fan. And no, when the day comes tha Eli turns in his jersey, I won’t abadon ship. ;)

Apparently not

I was def a lil apprehensive with him already having 4 sacks. Not to mention Osi was questionable for the game. Hope Kiwi can come back successfully, that’s a serious injury to have.

JPP

I think JPP should be worked in more. He looked pretty good

Coughlin hates playing rookies

He could have a player with the potential of being the best ever, and he will still start C.C. Brown over him lol.

that drives me crazy about TC. In 2007 he was forced to play rookies. We won the SB in a large part because the rookies stepped up.

He's Gonna Be Good

He has quite a motor. I like the fact he was on the field a bit more today.

It's time for Andrews to start at one of the tackle spots

Collingsworth said that Peppers was going to try both sides and look for the easier match up. Diehl was that easier match up.

GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGMEN

Just getting home from the game. Wow it was amazing. I went the carolina game and it was sort of a drag. this game was exciting and i loved the crowd. Lets go Big Blue. Defense was unreal. Our corners shut these guys down. Most of the Sacks were coverage sacks grwt job!!

by nwkiddnj on Oct 4, 2010 1:41 AM EDT reply actions

I missed most of the game

But it seems our D is starting to take to Fewell’s scheme. From what I understand, the offensive game plan lead much to be desired. Of course, Chicago has a pretty good D, but when I was talking to my parents, they wanted Killdrive’s head. Any insight you guys could give?

by YankeeDudeL on Oct 4, 2010 2:29 AM EDT reply actions

Intensity

Great day Giant D! You guys play up to your potential today.
Play with the same intensity on the road too and you should make it
to the play-off.
Congrats to the OL too. You guys finally made some holes for the runners .
If the Offense play with same intensity as the Defense the rest of the year,
who knows how far the Giants can go.

It's good to see the giants players having fun in a game

that was what the team was lacking…………playing with heart, passion and have some fun when you make a good play

I was laughing by butt off..

Cofield playing air guitar was classic. I loved how they kept showing it when they would go to commercial break.

Good team win

mainly due to the defense……..Defense A………offense C+……….Bradshaw needs to secure the ball better but i’m glad he had a good game and Jacobs too…………..Giants still need a LT because David Bad Deal is still Terrible

Lot of good performances

especially on Defence but, wow, how bad did Peppers make Diehl and McKenzie look?! Diehl especially.

Seubert looked good, and loved Chris Snee just bundling Bradshaw into the end zone!

by ScottishGiant on Oct 4, 2010 7:44 AM EDT reply actions

Diehl is pretty bad out there

but we’re talking about Julius Peppers. When you watch the replays and see what Peppers is doing out there, he might be the most athletic player in the NFL. He makes everyone look bad.

The Giants OL can’t be as bad as the Packers, they had to hold on every single play to contain Peppers

by FreeBradshaw on Oct 4, 2010 7:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Very true.

Peppers shows a lot of guys up. But between Peppers, Freeney and Mathis I think it’s become clear that it’s an area that needs addressed in a big way come the draft.

by ScottishGiant on Oct 4, 2010 8:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Yup

because if not we are gonna have a concussed Cutler of our own

by SNORKIS on Oct 4, 2010 8:20 AM EDT up reply actions

agreed but

you can’t get abused on just about every play.

On one play he never even laid a glove on Peppers.

Peppers is a freak of nature

6-7, I believe 260 or somewhere around there. If VandenBosch gives us trouble in two weeks, then we know we are in trouble.

by ct17 on Oct 4, 2010 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions

he was probably 260 when he was 10 years old

Pepp is more like 300lbs.

He made a dude like Mario Williams the #1 overall pick. He was the “orignal” freak of nature at 6"7 300lbs.

We get to face Super Mario of course this week coming up, but the Texans DL and overall defense isn’t close to the Bears D.

by FreeBradshaw on Oct 4, 2010 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Dodge had an ok game … He’s being asked to dd something ( directional punting ) that he’s never done before …The real thing that needs address is the kicker .. Tynes may have hit some big kicks 3 years ago but he makes FG opps an adventure and he’s a liability on kickoffs. People complain about kick coverage but its hard to do that when he other teams returner catches it at the 15-20 every time. They gotta burn a roster spot on a kickoff specialist who can get the ball in the endzone.

by TheBXRepresenta on Oct 4, 2010 8:52 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

The botched field goal

was Dodge’s fault, he didn’t get the ball down and turned in time. I’m defending my fellow countryman on that one! But yeah, Tynes just doesn’t have the leg for kickoffs.

Cutler

Anyone else not buying the concussion story with Cutler? I reckon he just lost his nerve completely.

Also…I genuinely thought Boley had ended Collins.

At one point, after one of the sacks, Cutler got off the ground and walked to the wrong sideline. And that was before the sack when his head hit the ground. Yes, he was concussed.

damn, he walked to the wrong sidelines?

Def looked great

but I don’t expect that next week. Fewell has got to continue to find new wrinkles to get pressure on the qb like last night. That O-line may actually be worse than ours. And I wrote early in the week that I thought Cutler may be too hungover to compete, and I think he was… a sharper QB would have given us fits on some of those CB blitzes. All round great performance by the Def. top to bottom.

ST’s it’s already been said.

Offense, credit where it’s due we found ways to protect Eli despite the inability of Deihl to get out of his own way. And I’m not sure if this is the reason the running game started to click but Pascoe as a FB was a good idea that could pay dividends, we have all mentioned that Hedgecock may be washed up… well apparently KG is reading this site.

Good win now how we gonna beat HOU?

by Flynner on Oct 4, 2010 8:54 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t think anyone has a clue what Houston are going to do offensively from week to week so could be a bit of a guessing game on that side of the ball.

Offensively I think we need to air it out, and hope that our wideouts can hold on to the ball consistently! I think there is yards after the catch to be made against the Texans.

by ScottishGiant on Oct 4, 2010 9:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Hedgecock

we all loved Hedgecock but he’s done.

There’s been some chatter on this site about BJ at FB. Forget that. Bear played very good at FB.

Lets hope we can put 2 consecutive games together

The D was fabulous and now we need a repeat performance. Can’t remember a game that was linked to a honor ceremony (Ring of Honor) where the team responded and played like a Giant team from the past. LT night, Carson night, last game in the stadium all turned into stinkers…

When its 3rd and long, throw the ball past the marker.

Give it up to coverage last night

they did a great job of giving the DL time to get to Cutler.

Amazing pressure by the front four

I wish that statement were true, but there were plenty of times we had open WRs and or/ RBs.

by Dane Noble on Oct 4, 2010 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah...

It looked to me like Cutler was having vision problems even before his concussion. On a lot of plays he had guys open 5-15 yards out but it looked like the ball was a family heirloom or something. A lot of those sacks were his fault, for holding the ball waaaaay too long.

by MookieTheCat on Oct 4, 2010 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions

The defense was awesome in the first half, but, late in the half, they only had a 3-0 lead. I was afraid the offense would waste such a dominating performance.
