I am one of the "lurkers" who has followed BBV for a couple of years, and have appreciated the most knowledgeable Giants fan community on the Web...here's for my first fan post. In common with many other fans, I think we should all be very satisfied with progress made to date this season...but also ensure we dont polish that Vince Lombardi trophy just yet.
Great to see the D really get back to playing tough, first stop the run, physical Giants football. I agree with all those who have commented on the strength of the D-line (great to see) and the play of the Linebackers in particular has been a really pleasant surprise. Overall the secondary looks far superior to last years version too. Cofield to me has been the biggest unexpected standout - Kudos!
Re the O, up and down...when Eli is on, he is one of the best QBs in the league...but you cringe when he tries to make a play where he should throw an incompletion, or just throws too high which seems to be a recurrent theme. O-line - Big Kudos for getting back to physical dominating line play...I just hope they can stay healthy as depth worries me. Re WRs and RBs....drops/fumbles aside, they have been a pleasure to watch as a fan!
Special Teams worries me though as I dont see the excellence - or at times basic competence - I think a Championship team will need. Great progress by Tynes this w/e, but the return game, and kickoff coverage are generally still woeful, although Matt Dodge appears to be gaining a bit of consistency.
All in all, I think we have to be pretty happy at 5-2 going in to the bye week, but we have a lot to work on, and a trip to the West coast after the the bye which always makes me nervous...but my personal summary, is so far so good, and IF we can address the areas which clearly need to eb addressed, I really believe this 2010/11 Giants team DOES have potential to be a force come January...here's hoping!
