DeSean Jackson / Dunta Robinson hit
Did anyone else see the video on nfl.com explaining illegal hits? Ray Anderson deems Robinson's hit on Jackson as illegal. But in my opinion, it was the only clean hit of all the "devestating hits" this past sunday. What ticks me off is this line by Anderson, "Using the head, forearm, or shoulder to deliver the initial hit to a defenseless player will draw significant discipline." What fricken part of your body are you supposed to tackle with Ray Anderson?!?!?! Defensive players are trying to hit the receiver so that he does not catch the ball. A clean hit is one that is not delivered to the player's head. Therefore Robinson's hit was clean b/c he used his shoulder. Maybe he should jump to his back and tackle him with his feet

I think if he had made any attempt at all
to get his arms around the receiver instead of trying to “blow him up” it might not have been worthy of a fine.
To give you an idea of how hard tackles can be made without endangering a players life take a look at this highlight film of Dick Butkus, one of the hardest hitting linebackers ever. When you watch you will notice that nearly every time he wraps up the player with his arms and doesn’t lead with his helmet. While he threw people around and stuck them head on, most of these highlight clips would not be judged worthy of any kind of penalty.

Dick Butkus?!?!
From what I’ve heard, the man was a menace. I never seen him play but I’ve seen the man literally trying to twist people’s heads off like beer caps. I just watched a movie on youtube something NFL Crunch Course…. and Butkus said something along the lines of going to a movie and watching some macabre scene with someone’s (detached) head rolling on the ground…and he said he couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like to do that to someone on the field!!!
Someone just posted the link…it’s in 5 parts

I love the music for that

Sure, Butkus doesn't lead with his helmet
But there’s still a ton of helmet to helmet contact. That’s going to be illegal…
Also, threatening a ref might’ve been ok back then, but even pretending to offer $1 to him is good for a five digit fine…
Ha ha...I liked the one where the ball carrier was hiding behind the ref.....

I see your point giant fan
however I feel you should be able to “blow someone up” as long as you don’t lead with your head
It hardly seems like much of an accomplishment to me when a guy gets "blown up" if he doesn't even see it coming.
I don’t see much glory in that. I don’t see any of these guys trying to “blow up” Jacobs when he is coming right at them. If they are so tough why don’t they try that?

football isn't always glorious
there’s a lot of small things and ugly things that you may need to win that aren’t going to make you famous. Guys who break the wedge on special teams aren’t iconic, but they may help the team win. Nobody would have known how important David Tyree was to the Giants if he hadn’t made “the catch” … I bet no one can name the guy who recovered the onside kick for the Saints in the Superbowl
ALSO
it’s very difficult to blow up Jacobs because of his sheer size … Also, he is not “defenseless” but you’re not just gunna let a receiver make a catch because he’s “defenseless”
Damn your right
I’ve already forgot. I do know that it was a former Eagle Hank Baskett was the one who messed up the recovery for the Colts

They make head to head contact
before Jackson had secured the ball. That makes him defenseless and his head is off limits.
I hate to post videos of Giants players getting smacked around but this is how you break up a pass / make a tackle, without leading with your head

It is illegal
simply for the fact he makes contact with his helmet.
no one seems to have this type of reaction
When a MJD leads with his helmet and blows up a blitzer….or Hines Ward blows up a defenseless defender on a blindside block leaving the guy woozy or broken up. If you’re not gonna suspend across the board(which they won’t) then don’t suspend, period, unless intent to harm(Brandon Merriweather) is evident.

right...
I was asked the same thing…Do power running backs have to stop lowering their shoulders to deliver a hit?

No....
the rule is only for defenseless receivers

and defenders aren't considered defenseless when they get caught on a crackback?
or are they just supposed to always keep their head on a swivel? yeah right.

Mclaren is right...
They say the Harrison hit on Cribbs was legal because a RB “knows” he will get hit so he is prepared. So, with that logic, a defender “knows” he is going to get hit so he should prepare. whatever…this is the gray area with this rule. It’s going to be controversial when someone is suspended(or not suspended). My fear for this week is that this weeks games are going to be hawked over by league officials so anything borderline will be noted and discusses. This all leads up to a HUGE MNF game that the Giants will be playing in Dallas. EVERYONE will be watching each and every tackle in that game so I just hope it’s a clean game because I think that even the slightest appearance of “devastation” will be dealt with harshly.

Dunta Robinson / D-Jax was NOT helmet to helmet.
close, but not. He leads Shoulder to chest. Any helmet contact is incidental and minor. the Robinson hit on D-Jax and the Lewis hit on Keller are textbook AWESOME FOOTBALL.
In fact Ross Tucker agrees with me so I must be right.
The Meriwether hit was the worst, and Harrison on Cribbs was pretty bad.
Don’t lead with your goddamn helmet, and don’t aim for theirs. WTF is so complicated about this issue that I can’t get real game analysis from the media but instead have to hear this crap ad nauseam?
Don’t hit with your helmet, don’t hit the receiver in the head. End of discussion. Move on.
All anyone needs to know about the Cowboys is that amid a terrible start to what was supposed to be a season draped in glory, they have more excessive celebration penalties (two) than wins (one).

all of this!
If there's ever a riot at Citi Field and Oliver Perez was the starter, I started the riot.
So... all teams have to do now is have a wr drop low come time to catch the ball or
to recieve a blow(II) from the defender late in the game to get a flag thrown for illegal contact and get the yards/1st down?
this is going to open up a can of worms fa sho
"they try to do what he do, and been where he's been, but they get folded in two.....he's the dude"
It was a clean hit plan and simple.
Jackson was focused on the ball and not the field around him. I will admit one thing; Analyzing the hit from one view you can see that the helmet collided but he didn’t lead with the helmet he lead with his shoulder. If the victim of that hit was a nobody, we wouldn’t even be having this conversation.

Last weekend was the "perfect storm" for helmet hits.
If Jackson’s had had been the only highlight I doubt there would have been any penalty for Robinson. On the other hand Merriman deserved a suspension for his hit, which, in my opinion was cowardly, and happened after the play
