Giants Injury Update: Kiwanuka not improving, Bullock and Boothe back
[UPDATE by Ed Valentine, 10/21/10 4:05 PM EDT: MG has now updated his report with Kiwanuka telling reporters has has a 'herniated' disc, which is more severe than bulging disc he had previously admitted to.]
Mike Garafolo has the Giants injury update on NJ.com, and the news doesn't sound good for Mathias Kiwanuka, who has been visiting specialists over the past two weeks:
The timetable for his return remains indefinite.
"I don’t think anything has changed," coach Tom Coughlin said during his press conference. "I don’t have anything at this point to tell you other than he traveled to L.A., he came back and (from) the information I get, there is no change."
Keith Bullock and Kevin Boothe returned to practice today, but no official word on if they will play Monday night. Indications are Bullock will be able to play barring a setback.
Because Boothe was on the "PUP" list, the Giants now have three weeks to either activate or release him.

Kiwi
This isn’t a good sign…if he isn’t cleared after the bye he may face IR .that my affect him in FA ! If that’s the case…The Giants have a better shot at re-signing him ! In all honesty, I just hope he gets healthy..its life not just football !

I'm puzzled by how it's being handled
I don’t see how he could go to the specialist across the country and there would be no change. I would expect that either they would get a timetable or he would recommend surgery. This “indefinite” stuff for weeks is frustrating. Hopefully he’s good after the bye.
they CAN operate him anyday of the week
the problem is he won’t be able to play football again this year. That is why they are just trying to let it heal on its own.

he won't get better
this won’t go away anytime this year and will only get worse if they allow him to play again. the giants have an embarrassment of riches at DE, the right thing to do, for the roster and for the health of the kid is to get him under the knife.
Hedgecock
can we just cut him?

this just plain sucks
This is the perfect example of “bad things happen to even the best of people”. I just hope this thing works itself out and Kiwi gets his shot to finish what he started this year. Even further removed from football…let’s just pray he gets healthy period.

Wait game
They are playing the “wait and see” game with Kiwi. He’s probably already been told to have surgery. I think they are waiting to see if its gets better over time to avoid surgery. I think it is smart, you don’t want to lose one of your best players for the season if you don’t have to.
With Kiwi not looking too probable in the near future
the selection of Jason Pierre Paul looks even sweeter, he’ll continue to get more oppurtunities in the rotation, hopefully provide some solid backup play and maybe even break out towards the end of the season.
That is the silver lining
It would be nice to see him get on the stat sheet one of these days. I understand he’s a project, but at the same time you want the 15th overall pick to show you something in his first year. Orakpo was picked 13th and had 11 sacks his first year, albeit starting every game.
If you understood he was a project,
You wouldn’t be comparing him to Orakpo, not to mention Orakpo plays OLB in a 3-4 defense. Not exactly apples to apples.

Good to hear that Boothe...
…and his ginormous ass both practiced today.
It looks as though we are in for a few more roster moves in the coming weeks. Let the speculation begin.

i think he’s done. herniation is very different than bulging. i had a herniated disc in my l5/s1. microdiscetomy… not pretty
Ya, this is BAD news....
Kiwi is probably out for the season. That sucks for him and us. I really feel for the guy because I think he is playing for his next contract as well. Tough spot for him.
I want more JPP and I want it now!
This also means...
A lot more of JPP.
I want more JPP and I want it now!
bulluck
is also raring to get back. i think that Sintim, in some small fashion, can replicate the Kiwi “buck” LB
yeah that sounds more likely
maybe i’m just more high on Sintim than i should be. thinking with bulluck back he will find a way to get after it
Unrelated to this post but the NFL just released the video they sent to the teams showing the new interpretation of illegal hit rules
http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-videos/09000d5d81b80962/Player-safety
It was annoying to see that the first video of an illegal hit was the unflagged hit on Boss against Carolina this year, shame they didnt call that in the game
"Tough times come and go, but tough guys last forever" - Wayne Bennett
why would they
illegal hits on Boss are always unflagged. It’s amazing.

KB needs to lower his shoulders
and protect himself from the “big hits”
the NY-KC game from last year
when Steve Smith got hammered. They flagged it but I thought it was a clean hit and this video showed it was clean too. Didn’t the refs admit a mistake in throwing the flag after it was reviewed during the week?

It looked like a fine hit
Thought so at the time as well.
Good thing the giants drafted JPP
with Kiwanuka hurt and no time table when he will return, good pick in the 1st round Reese because i will admit, i didn’t think the giants needed another de, specially in the 1st round
We still don't "need" JPP
We still have two starting DEs in Osi and Tuck. Kiwi played a lot of his snaps at LB because there weren’t enough snaps available for him as just a reserve DE, and it was a waste to gave all that talent just riding pine. JPP will now get more snaps as a backup than he would have, but so far Tolly has been the better reserve DE.
I think special teams have been needing him pretty bad
but I get your point
nobody makes me bleed my own blood! - Eli Manning
Our ST haven't improved
I’m not sure where the notion that JPP is some kind of ST beast came from or why it is so prevalent on this site. He has not actually made many special teams plays at all.
Are you kidding?
He gets double teamed every snap. TC has praised him for his ST play.
I want more JPP and I want it now!
First, no he doesn't
Second, didn’t TC praise him going out and really committing to playing STs, not praise him as a ST stud? I give JPP credit on the effort side of ST as the same can’t be said for players like Barden, but the fact of that matter is he hasn’t made any kind of huge impact on ST. I think people are just stretching to have something to get excited about with the first round pick.
he's a beast
special teams plays often are fast and messy and usually aren’t shown in replay unless its a big run so its easy to miss key plays. but if you can spot number 90 before the snap and keep track of him you’ll see him lighting people up with blocks, getting in position to stop a runback or in on the tackle.
TC's quote on JPP on kick-off coverage....
“You know where the double team is coming. The double team 90 everytime! Run down the field and make a play.”
I want more JPP and I want it now!
Well, lets hope the Kiwi report is a smoke-screen..We need him

Secondary are cowards
I’m not sure where else to post this (how do a send a blog), but here is my rant.
The secondary, which has been whining about the fines and rules , are a bunch of cowards. What makes one “macho” when you can cream a defenseless receiver. That’s Macho? I wonder if Mr. Harrison would be so macho if he was on a street corner or a dark alley on even terms with the guys he hits. Would he be so “macho”? A bully is some one who picks on an individual who really can;’t defend them selves. The secondary are bullies.
What do you think?
It's almost like we can't have Kiwi and Osi at the same time
Mid-2007 Kiwi got hurt, preseason 2008 osi got hurt, 2009 they were both healthy, now Kiwi is out again this season.
its not looking good for kiwi
And this is coming from a man with 2 herniated discs in his neck. Its not something you can just come back and play through; hell it took me 6 months of therapy and doctors visits just to get well enough to work again and I still wasn’t ready. Now I elected not to have surgery, as we felt it best to wait and see how it healed. Its been 5 years later and I still get a tingling sensation from time to time when I move my head a certain way.
Now I’m not comparing myself to a physical specimen like Kiwi, just giving you a glimpse as to what he’s going thru, and the fact that in my uneducated opinion, surgery or not, kiwi is done for the season.
Yes, I am a Giants fan. Now that we got that out of the way....

Good luck
with your situation, I knew it was a wing and prayer regarding Kiwi this season even before
the updated news. I couldn’t believe some people thought he would be practicing within a couple weeks? You don’t come back in a couple weeks with something like this folks. I’ve had a bulging disc in my back in the past, which is not half as serious as this!

But I’m fine now. Like I said it was years ago it happened. As I get older I’m sure it will deteriorate, but for now its almost non existent.

I've been wondering that very same thing since they signed him..
"When I was a boy and had no sense I got my pecker stuck in an electric fence..Well it curled my hair and tickled my balls, and made me shit in my overalls"
overall we have been pretty lucky.
for the season lost our KR / 4th WR, a crappy FB, Sinorice Moss, now perhaps a top DE.
Kiwi’s the only real loss in there. As far as I know all other injuries are not season-enders. Anybody got better info?
All anyone needs to know about the Cowboys is that amid a terrible start to what was supposed to be a season draped in glory, they have more excessive celebration penalties (two) than wins (one).
We don't need Kiwi
So glad we drafted this guy, can never have enough quality DEs along the line.

I mean...
I know Osi sure appreciates him.
And just look at him drop into coverage…make a nice play on the ball, clearly ahead of the game.

he's off to a promising start
but it would be really nice to still have Kiwanuka. That’s our first major loss of the season.

A case
could be made for Hixon too? Based on what we have witnessed from Reynaud,
I know I would be a lot more comfortable.

yes, it would be better, but still
an average KR is not a major loss considering what most teams go through

IDK
I believe Hixon averaged about 11 yards per punt return last year, which placed him about 4th in the league. I would consider that well above average
myself, more concerned about Reynaud than Dodge for example.
