Giants Sign Placekicker Shayne Graham, Place Victor Cruz On IR

The New York Giants have signed veteran placekicker Shayne Graham as insurance for the injured Lawrence Tynes, and have placed rookie wide receiver Victor Cruz on Injured Reserve.

The move was necessitated by the sprained ankle suffered Friday by Tynes, who is questionable for Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions.

Graham is a 10-year veteran who was released on Sept. 4 by the Baltimore Ravens after losin g a training camp battle with Billy Cundiff. Graham played the previous seven seasons for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Graham has hit 196 of 230 field goal attempts (85.2 percent) and 276 of 279 extra point tries in his career. He has scored 864 points and had five consecutive seasons with more than 100 points. Graham has 45 touchbacks in 564 career kickoffs.

Cruz, the undrafted free agent from UMass, made the team with a sensational training camp. He appeared in three regular-season games and did not catch a pass.

Just saw the news wasn’t up yet and i posted this as a fanshot, sorry ed, you can take it down now if you’d like. My guess is this doesnt effect the giants too much sunday (worried i just jinxed graham). I also wonder if dodge will handle kickoffs. Cruz was probably stashed on IR just to save him from being released. I hardly doubt his hammy is that bad. Good to see that ramses barden has moved back up the depth chart, and actually had a catch early in last weeks game, not in garbage time. It is still early in his career the major problem now is the talent ahead of him, a good problem to have with all the injuries in football. Wait this was a post about a placekicker right? I digress too much

Can Dodge kick off?

With his leg, you’d think he could become a kickoff specialist. I’d tell him to just boom it.

Hard to believe that’s the only way they could clear roster space. I didn’t have the impression Cruz was injured that badly

This is why the NFL needs

A DL list that allows you to bring a player back after 4-6 weeks. Shelving talent for the rest of the season to make space for a couple of week issue makes no sense.

Graham is solid might even be an upgrade over Tynes. I’d have preferred to see them sign a guy with a bigger leg though since Tynes is only gonna miss a game. Dodge hasn’t been asked to kickoff yet but hell why not … Kick it as hard as you can son and keep it inbounds how hard is that.

Tough Break for Cruz . . .

. . . But I’m not sure what other options there were. The team wants Beatty back on the roster when he’s healthy, and obviously wasn’t prepared to IR Hedge (although he’s been so bad they would have gotten little argument here), so it was Cruz. . . . anybody else, practice squadding for a week or whatever, would have been snatched up.

Tough break for Cruz, but let’s face facts here, guys. Until one of the big three gets hurt or signs a monster deal somewhere else, neither Cruz nor Barden are going to get much of a shot with the Giants.

How about this as an alternative

I was looking forward to Cruz making some catches this year, but an alternative would be to IR madison Hedgecock. Pascoe has taken up the slack and a traditional fullback is becoming a thing of the past. In addition, Hedgecock may be beyond usefulness. He was part of what was wrong with the blocking last year which ultimately cost us the running game and Manning pass protection.

how does injured reserve work?

Can Cruz get off the list soon or does he have to stay on IR all season?

by scarlet knight on Oct 16, 2010 10:31 PM EDT reply actions

He has to stay

for the whole season I believe. A shame because I would have liked to have seen what he could do against #1’s instead of 2’s and 3’s. I think he is much more valuable than Ramses Barden, who is also injured, so I would’ve put either Barden or, even better, Madison Hedgecock on IR instead. He’s been more of a liability than anything this year.

yeah IR means done for the year

and as far as i know Ramses hasn’t been hurt for awhile. he’s also contributing on special teams now, so lets hope they wake up and decide to put him in there in spots that he can be used to our advantage(read: green zone)

by Mr. Jamsackson on Oct 17, 2010 2:38 AM EDT up reply actions

i disagree...

Hedgecock is our only true fullback so he is not an option and with the loss of Kehl earlier this season putting Dillard on IR would risk us cutting into our already thin growing LB"s core.(not to mention half our LB’s are all injury prone like Boley, Wilkinson, and Bullock is currently hurt) I think the proper move here would have either been to IR one of these guys on the roster who are currently in limbo such as Beatty, after all we did sign Andrews and are doing pretty well on the O-line when it comes to numbers not to mention we should be getting O’hara back soon. I understand we have injury issues in our secodary as well with Ross and his plantar faciatis but I would have rather cut DJ Johnson or Brian Jackson instead of putting Cruz on the IR

I thought about Beatty too.

But with so many things that could happen to the O-line we may need Beatty this year yet. Inspite of his good showing it does make sense that we can do without Cruz more safely than a guy like Beatty who may have to save us in a critical time near the end of the year.

It looks like Cruz will have to “take one for the team”

Hey, good to find a pro with a great track record this far into the season

Shayne Graham is solid, with lots of game experience and a well rested leg. He will be just fine. As long as we keep winning, I don’t really want to see touchbacks, as if there is one thing we need, it is constant reps on returns. I have the impression that the return coverage is improving week on week, but we need the reps. As far as figgie acuracy goes, Tynes is only 5 of 8 this year which translates to 63% accuracy, so it’s not like we are losing Bironas. I think IR’ing VC could indicate that this may be more than a 1 week replacement. The planting foot ankle is not a good thing, as for figgies you plant and twist when you kick. Kickoffs are easier. We could end up using a two kicker solution for a while, if someone else ends up needing to be deactivated and we have the space.

by Spider Lockhart on Oct 17, 2010 12:29 AM EDT reply actions

You don't want

to see touchbacks? I don’t really understand that logic, rather have a touchback every time, if that was possible. I think Cruz was probably going to be out a couple weeks, and that leads to their bye week. Since he is not a gunner on ST’s, and Calhoun is, most likely led to the IR.
I also think he might have got in the cross hairs of Coughlin too, I mean he did that during a
walk through in a Monday practice. You don’t endear yourself to a head coach doing that, geez.

"No one played more for the Giants, while being coached less".
Ex-Giants coach, Steve Owens, talking about Mel Hein.

by Great Gatsby on Oct 17, 2010 8:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Well if we don't need touchbacks because we are winning....

Then I would rather see the return team get the practice covering returns. Longer term it is best to have as many touchbacks as possible for sure, but right now we need the coverage practice. And hopefully the Detroit game will give us several opp’s for working out the coverage team, because that would mean that we are scoring a lot. If you have a week that we are not getting the touchbacks, a week that we are 11 point favorites is probably the best one.
Those walk-throughs can be brutal it seems. I once tore my knee up playing badminton.
Tender hammies, the bane of receivers trying too hard or not in condition. You always see it with WR’s that hold out, or young guys that don’t pace themselves.
I think it may raise eyebrows around the league that the Jints are ‘hiding’ Cruz on IR. Not sure what the league policy is on placing healthy players on IR, but hamstring pulls are tough to pin someone down on, as far as I know they don’t show up too clearly on an MRI. Thus a Monday walk-through pull.

in fairness

one of Tynes missed FG was 53 yards. One was a bad hold by Dodge. The third was from 44 yards.

that's true and that's fair

Tynes has actually been really good this year, from the very first preseason game onwards. But Bironas usually doesn’t miss from 53 yards. He was doing well, but I wouldn’t rank Tynes with the top 10 or 12 kickers I don’t think. And I was happy to see the switch to having Rosenfells holding the FG attempts last week. Having a QB hold give you a lot more options on a miffed hold, and they have a lot more experience recovering from a broken play.

I’d rank Tynes in the bottom half of the league for kickers.

Not to mention that Coughlin knows that Tynes is shakey at best.

Sometimes moves like this result in a new kicker. In my opinion the position has been open for a couple of years now. I don’t want to sound like a fanatic but let’s face it, Tynes isn’t what we want in the long run. Let’s congratulate him for kicking that field goal in Green Bay and send him on his way as soon as possible.

by giant fan since 57 on Oct 17, 2010 6:54 AM EDT reply actions

Why

Why are we hung up on Cruz? Yes he had a spectacular game but it was the preseason. He hasn’t dressed for all games and in the games he has dressed he’s seen limited if any action. He also has zero catches. How much has he been missed? Not at all. How much would he be missed? Very little.

Also, our WR have been pretty damn good. So good that Ham hasn’t caught a ball in 2 games and has only been targeted a few times. Even Beckum has more catches the last 2 games than Ham.

I think we just like him

Local kid, free agent pick-up, outplayed a really good backup WR like Hagans to make the cut. Outplayed a few guys who made the team also. We don’t need him, we just like him. No thoughts about the Cruz missile giving up on a play. He is fun to watch and fun to cheer for. Fun watching sports is also about having guys that you connect with some how. Victor has never caught a pass but Victor has a fan club.

Graham is pretty good

Could make Tynes an after thought…

He’s only missed 4 inside 30 yards in his career…and didn’t Tynes do that last year? He’s 50% on 50 yarders too, which is pretty good.

no problem IR’ing Cruz either. No sense in cutting him and he’s useless for STs or at least compared to Duke Calhoun. Barden being healthy now makes him irrelevant for the WRing too.

Bokeem Woodbine

by FreeBradshaw on Oct 17, 2010 9:12 AM EDT reply actions

If it's not Graham it will have to be somebody soon.

Our team deserves better and I think we should be actively looking for a guy who won’t make us slide up to the edge of our seats evry time he kicks. And though he has improved his kickoffs he is still not a premier kicker. Someday he will lose us a very important game.

Bottom line…he can’t be considered anything but a middle of the road kicker. I say let’s rebuild our special teams starting with a kicker that kicks well enough to turn each kickoff into an opportunity for the Giants instead of what we have now…good field position for our opponents. Yes the kicker is not the only problem on ST play but an elite kicking game would be a plus in many close games.

Sorry to keep harping on this but it amazes me that Reece the Giants tolerate this.

I agree

he makes me a nervous nellie when he lines up for a field goal (regardless of the holder).
Two years ago, we brought Carney in, and held down the fort pretty well (may have brought in him this time, but his lack of length on kickoffs probably dissuaded them from that idea)..
The good news, they HAVE created a roster spot with the IR of Cruz, so they don’t have to unload Graham in a couple weeks.
If I were still a betting man, I would say Tynes may make it through the season, but I doubt
he is here next season.
