About The License Plate Guy

Photo

Some of you asked the other day if it was possible to track down the 'License Plate Guy' and do an interview. Well, lo and behold I received an e-mail from him this week.

His name is Joe Ruback. As for that interview, turns out he recently did a full sit down with Patch.com.

Read it. Enjoy it. And note the advice about how to behave in a rival stadium.

Seems like a real straight shooter to me.....

And I totally agree with his advice on attending away games. I went to school and lived right outside of Philly for a few years, I dont care what they say, Philly fans are the worst! But if you lay low you will be ok

went to school in williamsport PA with all kids from the philly area.. being a Giants fan in a mostly Eagles fan school was tough for 4 years… you bet your a$$ i wore my giants Jersey every single Monday after a giants W…. also rocked out a mets jersey as much as possible but wasnt as proud to wear that one

by Plaxico Burress on Oct 14, 2010 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions

same here Plax

I would love to wear my Giants gear the day after a win, but didnt get to wear the Mets gear as much…..although I was at the game when Todd Zeile hit two home runs against the Phillies, the second being the game winning one, classic!

I was just in Williamsport a few weeks back, great town

by BigBlue82 on Oct 14, 2010 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Damn

how many of us went to school near philly? On sundays or mondays when the Giants played I always rocked my Sehorn jersey (I had one that got stolen in the dorms so I had to get another. Stay classy philly fans). Walking around campus or the cafertia, a lot of “nice” words were said my way. Even the cooking staff did, I wonder how many of my burgers had a little flavor added to them.

I went to school in Delaware

definitely Philly country. Used to wear my Giants & Mets stuff all the time. The Giants stuff was rough, b/c I was there from ‘02-’06, which was pretty much the high water mark of Eagles history, and they were definitely a better team than us during that stretch (the worst part was the Brian Westbrook punt return game – ugh), although my senior year was the year the Giants won the division and the Eagles suffered the Super Bowl hangover, so that was pretty awesome.

With the Mets stuff, the funny thing is that for most of that time, the Phillies were better than the Mets, yet I NEVER saw people wearing Phillies stuff, and I never got crap for wearing Mets stuff. I went to the last ever Mets-Phillies game @ the Vet, in a year that the Mets lost almost 100 games and the Phillies were competing for the wild card, and the place was almost half Mets fans (not that it was anywhere near full, it was pretty much empty). Now Phillies fans want to pretend their the best fans ever. They suck.

Philly fans are the biggest fair weather fans ever!

by BigBlue82 on Oct 14, 2010 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

WOW

NOT TRUE!!!

We might criticize and yell at a guy for not performing…we might cheer and scream at a guy in the same game…

but win or lose, we’ll always be there. We’ve had some sucky seasons, but the stadium’s selling out and the bars are always packed.

So I don’t know where you’re coming from with the ‘fair weather’ idea.

In my mind, fair weather fans are the ones who only cheer or come out of the woodwork when the team is winning. That’s NOT philly.

I live in NY, and go to the same bar every week for the games. When the Giants are in the playoffs, all of a sudden, the bar is PACKED with people who have never come out before, wearing jerseys with the tags still on them (maybe to return them after?) That sounds a little fair-weather-ish to me, no?

how right you are

The MNF game when mcnabb ran all over the Giants in the last few minutes to come from behind and win it. Watching that with a room full of all eagle fans and me was not fun. But at least I had the Halloween game Strahan had the INT TD to seal the win, my Political Science teacher the next day was so pissed and I was in the back of the room laughing.
Anyway.. Philly is always a football town first. When I was there, no one really cared for the Phillies that much cause the eagles were begining there NFC Championship losing streak. Now that they have been one of the best NL teams for the past 3 years, fans seem to pop out of everywhere.
They are already planning the parade. Hell in Apiril they said it was goona be sox vs phillies, counted the world champ Yankees out before the season even started, then in June when they slumped, Philly fans counted their own team out and were already planning for NFL training camp. Fair weather fan is a nice thing to call them.

I'll grant that Philly is fairweather

toward the Flyers, Sixers, and Phillies…but that’s because we’re a football town.

We’re not fair-weather toward the Eagles.

Similar to what I see in NY (I live in Staten Island). NY is a baseball town. People support the Mets/Yankees year round and regardless of how they’re doing. The News/Post are all over what’s going on with baseball. But you only see Giants jerseys, and football fans in the beginning of the season, or during a good season.

during the 2000 playoff game, I was home on winter break so did not get to gloat till the next week at the dorms. Then all my roommates acted like football was over as I watched the Viking slaughter alone with a big smile on my face.

Giants fan from Philly

Me too. I never got crap in my Philly suburb HS for wearing my Giants jacket/hats. Maybe the kids just didn’t care that much? I would have worn my Giants jersey on a Monday after a win more often, except it was the ’90s, so the vast majority of Mondays were out.

I caught some major flack once when I was a teenager. It was the week after the iceball game and I was wearing my Giants jacket while walking through Philly’s 69th St. Station. A couple of guys walking behind us, likely in their 20s, said “The GIANTS?! Boo! Go back to New York!”

One of the guys I was with was embarrassed to be seen with me, as if it was my fault that grown men lacked the self awareness to realize that picking on a 16-year-old kid makes THEM look bad.

LICENSE PLATE GUY

Hey guys- I’m not much of a writer but I couldn’t help but chime in and let you guys know alittle something about me. For one THANKS ED for the post really feels great to read what good things people have to say about a typical GMEN fan and the GMEN. I’m a fan just like everybody else on this site just happens I attend every GMEN game. Trust me if my wife didn’t support it or my daughter didn’t love the stories behind the games I’d be at the home games and that’s all. Season ticket holder my whole life, I’ve been going to games since I was 7 and was at the Pisarcik game so that should tell you how long Ive been around. When I was 16 my Dad told me I should wear my yellow plate off my car to the game and poof License plate guy was born I guess. I started to go to the away games 7 yrs ago and during the Superbowl 42 run I decided to sit front row behind the GMEN bench and the GMEN just kept winning so since I’m just as superstition as Parcells I just kept going…..7 yrs later I’m still doing it.
The GMEN organization does not pay for any away games, hotels, food money, tickets, airfare or even a cup of coffee but then again I’ve never asked. I’m just a huge GMEN fan and I hope to meet some of you at the stadium in either my section 144 row 7 or on the road. Keep up the good work ED!!!
