Shawne Merriman any one?

Hello to all my name is OJ and I'm new to the BBV crew (maybe a bit to new to be starting my own post).

I couldn't help but notice on the ESPN website that Shawne Merriman is to be released by San Diego once he becomes healthy. As we all know Shawne is one of whom does not shy away from the spotlight so I feel he would love to come play for the Giants of New York. And seeing as we appear to be somewhat lacking in terms of talented linebackers, I ask the question, do you thing the Giant's should show interest in the man they call "Lights Out" if he does indeed become healthy again?

Dude's shot.

Would ask for way too much money, and is probably better suied for a 3-4.

No than you.

I don't think so...

…he hasn’t been the same since he’s been off the juice. I like our LBs right now and I’d rather build through the draft. Let the pats have him.

He's done

Even if he were healthy, I’m not sure he could be a 4-3 SAM this late in his career. He’s played in a 3-4 since he entered the league.

Welcome to BBV, by the way!

Cheers GD

I’m glad to be on board, just a shame I kicked things of with such a bad poll… clearly I am a rookie at this haha

I wouldn't worry

If not you, someone would have posted something about Lights-Out.

Honestly, he’s just a bad fit for the Giants. Merriman is more of a DE than a LB, which we have plenty of depth at, ATM, and he hasn’t been very good in years. Some other team with passrush problems and is ok with troublemakers will probably pick him up (Cards, Bengals, Eagles?).

TC runs a tight ship, he doesn’t want some juiced-up idiot who was at one point dating Tila Tequila, to come in and mess up his team.

by Charles L on Oct 13, 2010 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

No way.

He really hasnt been any good since he was suspended for being on the juice.Plus really the Linebackers have been really solid so far this year.

by ManningtoNicks on Oct 13, 2010 4:41 PM EDT reply actions

He's not really a LB anyway

he’s a DE. If anything he’d play a role similar to Kiwaunuka. But that’s besides the fact that he’s washed up; pretty much has been since he got caught for roids then his knees kept tearing

Wow two Kiwaunuka's

I’m frothing over just the thought of it haha

by AussieGiant on Oct 13, 2010 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I wish...

but I meant the role of Merriman. He’s not a LB, more of a DE but probably used as a stand up DE like Kiwi is.

But Merriman isn’t close to Kiwi’s level at this point. I’d take Tollefson every day of the week and of course twice on Sundays over Merriman.

Your a wise man Mr FreeBradshaw

So I would like your opinion on something, imagine your Mr Giants and you can only sign one of the following in Osi and Kiwi, who at this point would you rather keep? What with Osi having issues but playing outstanding and Kiwi paying outstanding but having his current injury scare the choice i feel is not an easy one….

Big Blue Through and Through

by AussieGiant on Oct 13, 2010 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Dunno that you can answer that now

Kiwi seems like he’s close to coming back, but you don’t know. When healthy he’s the better player.

Osi has the stats, but while he’s improved his run stopping, he still just flies past the LT with his head chopped off then swats at the QB’s arm

I’d say Kiwi

Thanks FB

I like your answer, do u think that we could keep both of them, as well as keep them both happy at the same time?

Big Blue Through and Through

by AussieGiant on Oct 13, 2010 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions

They could

but that was the purpose of drafting JPP. They ain’t keeping both.

Winning cures all...even stupid

by FreeBradshaw on Oct 13, 2010 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

But I assume they drafted JPP

because the were uncertain about Osi and the glass case of emotion that comes with him. Honestly I think if Osi keeps playing the way he is he will be hard to just show him the door… maybe thats just me.. all i know is he and the entire Giants D are playing some damn good football right now :)

Dead on

We don’t need any more 34 lb convert projects, so we are talking a backup DE that plays LB on select plays. I’ll also take Tolly in that role over Merriman every day and twice on Sunday.

by bigblue777 on Oct 13, 2010 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions

For the 13 that said yes

Speak up, I haven’t read one comment as to how he could benefit the team?

Not knocking your opinion, just really don’t see the positives in adding him, anyone care to open my eyes?

yeah im surprised that 38% say "yes"

yet none have willing stated why, I being one of them just to kick the thread off think that it would depend on the asking price for if we could get him for peanuts he could be quite a valuable if other teams feel the same way as you guys appear to and besides he could at least be an upgrade for our Special Teams hahahaha JPP and Light Out, I sure as hell wouldn’t want to return that kick

I wouldn't even take a flier on him for next year (if there is one)

I think they got a gem in Adrian Tracy

I sure hope you’re right it wouldn’t surprise me, what with JR’s drafting skills :)

Tracy

Yea we will def see with Adrian Tracy. He was showing alot of flashes in preseason, its a shame we couldnt see what he was made of in the regular season. At the very least it would have been fun with JPP on one side and Tracy on the other rushing down the field on kickoffs lol.I really never like “lights out”" since he was drafted.I honestly laughed in every non Giants fan face when he was caught taking steroids because i had to listen to them say the Giants were idiots for making the trade for Eli and the Chargers got a gem with Rivers and him and a couple others. So when he was busted I was honestly thrilled lol.

by ManningtoNicks on Oct 13, 2010 10:07 PM EDT reply actions

Also agree on

Whoever voted yes i would like to hear your opinion.I really dont agree but I honestly would like to hear how he would help our defense.Just curious.

by ManningtoNicks on Oct 13, 2010 10:08 PM EDT reply actions

voted no

but he would be an upgrade to Sintim.. for now at least.

Giants D already good enough

plus Merriman is all about the show. not sure if he’s 100% dedicated to the game

which is a way smoother dance routine then the lights out… thing…

surprized by how close the poll is

i voted no because our LBs will be just fine. Goff is turning into a real stud, Sintim is coming along nicely, Dillard will be fine once he’s healthy, Boley is above average, hell even Gerris Wilkinson is making plays!

merriman would be nice dont get me wrong, but hes been on the major downslide the past 2-3 years and would want a monster paycheck. i wouldnt be opposed to signing him if the price was right.. but it wont be

by Plaxico Burress on Oct 14, 2010 10:53 AM EDT reply actions

yea its ridiculous how close this is...

he’s not a LB and he’s also not very good anymore.

Dunno how anyone could want this clown on the team.

by FreeBradshaw on Oct 14, 2010 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions

If Merriman comes cheap than I would hope JR would kick the tires.

Seems to me after his steriod bust he has just not been the same player, I would not give him anything long term.

by Late for Dinner on Oct 14, 2010 2:13 PM EDT reply actions

this is why I voted yes

Nothing bad can happen from kicking some old tires.

and if other teams come ready with the keys. well, let em have the daym car.

Something bad can happen

The guy is an idiot and could become a distraction or detract from team chemistry (which seemed to be a bit fragile in the early going).

by NYStateofMind on Oct 14, 2010 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Bum and a Punk

NY transplant living in SD and have seen Merriman his entire career. He has not been the same since getting busted for steroids and he is just an idiot. Giants don’t need his sub-par performance or his drama. Last I checked the D was doing ok. Let’s worry about that OL.

by NYStateofMind on Oct 14, 2010 4:05 PM EDT reply actions

WOW

at this point their are more Yes votes than No votes, its surprising indeed, I just don’t understand if that is how people are feeling why so few have expressed why on the boards…

I don't get it either Aussie

The whole point of this website is to generate intelligent discussion about our beloved Giants. This poll had the potential to create some very good discussion, but since it appears all of those who voted yes don’t seem to know why they did so, I’m left wondering if it’s simply because of name value…

I guess as 1 of the 82 (49%!!) I'll state a bit more as to why I voted yes

and that is simply because his situation is similar(ish) to that of Shawn Andrews, if we can get him on a short contract I see bringing him in has more upside potential than downside. That being said atm the D is playing outstanding so I agree tito that maybe people just said yes for names sake
