The Sun Is Shining Again, Giants Fans

A smile? On the face of Tom Coughlin? Wow! (Photo by Chris Graythen/Getty Images)

Two victories in a row over good football teams, pushing their record to 3-2, and the sun is shining again for the New York Giants and their fans (meaning US!!).

Scan through the comments of the earlier posts here today at Big Blue View, and you can see that the mood has brightened considerably from a couple of weeks ago.

Here are the top 5 signs from Big Blue View commenters that things are well in Giant land.

  1. You guys are reaching so much for stuff to nitpick or argue about that the height of Matt Dodge's punts is a major source of contention today. Not bad, if that's the biggest complaint.
  2. The Giants put up 34 points, racked up 414 total yards of offense, had 26 first downs to Houston's 11, held the ball for 38:51, averaged 5.6 yards per play, won a game handily and you guys are STILL complaining about offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride. I love you guys, I really do. But, c'mon now.
  3. No one has suggested that head coach Tom Coughlin has "lost" his team. Or brought up the dreaded "Bill Cowher should replace him" argument.
  4. Someone posted a photo of Reby Sky. We have seen it before, a bunch of times, but it never gets tough to look at.
  5. Even Cowboys fans have stopped by to congratulate us on how good the Giants look. And kvetch about their own 1-3 team. Ah, yes, a good day!

Way too high. Lions are potent on offense and play a little defense too (did anyone see the SICK play Suh made on that interception??) – the Lions are officially “frisky”

Giants aren't gonna sleep on the Lions this week

Realistically that’s the only way they beat the Giants this week. I know Detroit beat the Rams 44-6 but remember that’s the Rams a team that’s been as bad as the Lions the last few years. Maybe the Lions are getting better but the Giants aren’t gonna fall victim to a “trap game.”

Banks on CS

Carl Banks said on the WFAN this morning that he was impressed with Sintim’s play yesterday – and that he’s been very critical in the past but that Clint was effective on special teams yesterday and that the play of “starters” and guys like Clint S and JPP on special teams is one of the primary differences in the (relative!) success or improvimg play out of the special teams.

In particular he cited JPP’s involvement in special teams and how he runs around like a man possessed out there and he clears out a lot of room because he is so big and fast (and no one wants to get in his way or even try to block him). I think that bodes well for JPP’s future with the team: obviously he is willing to do whatever he can to get on the field and help the team, even playing special teams. Fantastic sign for this rookie.

Banks

For many many reasons, I love Carl B and I respect the hell out of what he says. For a guy so closely linked to the organization, Carl is simply not afraid to pull punches and criticize the team yet he balances that very nicely with praise when that praise is deserved. He’s by far one of my favorite analysts associated with the team.

And yes, Banks is the gospel as far as I’m concerned. He can definitely be tough sometimes but he just knows the game so damn well. His Monday morning appearences w/ Evan and Joe in the midday on the WFAN are “must-listens” for Giants fans. Banks has his finger on the pulse of this team as well as, if not better, than any of the beat reporters.

I’d love to listen to his analysis during the game rather than that Giant hating Moose Johnston. Why the hell do Giants fans get stuck listening to ex-Cowboys ( Johnston or Aikman) all the damn time! And they are both obviously biased. Johnston was the one telling us it was a clean hit on Boss a couple of weeks ago when he took a very late hit to the head. They actually sound disappointed when the Giants start kicking ass.
Let’s start all calling FOX and demanding Banks for a color commentary when they do the Giants or we’re putting our radio audio on. I do that sometimes anyway.

In his first extended action of the season

it was a nice game to build off of. When he was healthy last year he looked like he was possessed at times.

Didn’t really make many plays aside from rushing Schaub on a few occasions, but didn’t really make too many mistakes.

He’ll get better and more involved as the season progresses. I know he’s been in the league a long time, but there’s still room for improvement in that old body of his.

He was OK

He mostly played on 1st and 2nd down. He didn’t make any glaring mistakes. He bit hard on a play action pass. He hesitated on a few plays. He pressured the QB on one play. Shaub had to dump off to the RB in the flat. Tuck made the tackle. On another play he blanketed the TE in the flat.

It was a good first start. I’d give a C grade.

Aside from being healthy the biggest difference in them from last to this yr is the secondary. Hey…I’m all about Tuck, Osi, and Kiwi but Cofield and Canty are beasts right now.

When I heard Kiwi was out with the bulging disc I thought Osi might take his foot off the gas because he didn’t have someone breathing down his neck trying to take his job. I was wrong and now I think that coming off the knee surgery slowed him a bit early last year. Then after the defense all but collapsed he was just not a factor out there. I remember that Osi explained that he would take a sack over sex…he’s basically getting both now because he’s been screwing Offensive linemen all year…

so much of the dlines success is due to C&C eating up blockers, consuming lots of space and/or getting penetration. Pushing back the oline.

My favorite thing from the day:

According to team stats on NFL.com,

We have the NUMBER ONE defense in the league now in terms of yards allowed/game:
1. New York Giants 244.6
2. San Diego Chargers 246.2
3. Baltimore Ravens 257.8
4. Minnesota Vikings 276.3
5. Pittsburgh Steelers 289.0

If THAT isn’t good enough, we’re also the #5 OFFENSE as well:
1. San Diego Chargers 461.8
2. Dallas Cowboys 421.5
3. Indianapolis Colts 397.0
4. Denver Broncos 384.8
5. New York Giants 378.0

An even better note, we got the #5 offense without being in the Top 5 for Passing and Rushing yds/game, meaning we may have one of the (if not the MOST) balanced offensive attacks in the NFL.

can you dig it?

I'd still have no problem with Spiller

you’d be flat out, out of your mind to think a KR that can actually take it to the house is not a big time weapon.

Imagine if the Giants could actually get field position from their return game? Its just as a rookie; JPP’s making his mark on specials and its helping.

I said that was a big reason to draft Spiller, his return prowess. Then he can be implemented in the running game over time and/or as the other 2 break down. And of course you can use him…I bet they’d use Spiller as a RB more then they use Ware.

At first I was thinking...

who the heck is this guy? Most teams had him at a 2nd rd. grade. Then I checked out some highlight reels. His height, strength, body control, speed…they all made me think of Justin Tuck, but with longer arms and a more athletic frame.

At this point, he’d more than likely be playing more defense for most other teams (maybe starting) not as stacked as this defensive front. We are very fortunate to have a guy like JPP sitting behind some of the best DEs in the game right now. He’s only going to learn more and get better.

While he’s not the best, Hixon certainly can break a couple. I do highly doubt the Giants wouldve passed on Spiller if he fell, Big Blue knows the value of a 3 headed RB monster as well.

I’m just thinking that JR made the right move both hanging at spot 15 and choosing his guy, especially now that Kiwi’s out.

lets be careful with that

If you remember, last season our yards given up was pretty good thru most of the season, until that final stretch of disgusting, if I’m not mistaken.

Points allowed is probably a more accurate measure of a true defense, although that number can get skewed due to the offense and special teams giving up bad field position. But I believe we are ranked 18th in points allowed.

I came up with this totally unscientific, off the top method earlier today: just add up our yardage ranking with our points allowed ranking, then divide by two. The result? Were ranked 9th(rounded down) in overall D. Sounds fair to me!

Q: Do you feel like every time you touch the ball you can turn it into a touchdown?
A: No, I just like to contribute to the offense the best way possible. That’s my job.

Q: When you look at the numbers, six touchdowns in five games, are you sitting there going, ‘Wow, this is pretty impressive?’
A: Honestly I really don’t even think about that right now. I’ll probably check it out towards the end of the season. Right now I just want to focus on contributing to the team and being here and enjoying it.

Q: You know you’ve already matched your total from last year?
A: I do now.

Nicks is a beast

He was flat out dominant out there, the kid is a legit playmaker and it doesn’t matter if he catches a 1 yard toss or a 40 yard pass he’s going to make something out of it. You’ve got to take your hat off to Reese because he didn’t waste much time in finding a replacement for Plax.

Hopefully he can stay healthy because by season’s end he’s going to have some ungodly numbers. I know that fantasy footballers are probably worshipping the ground that he walks on.

Man this is just like Plax against the Packers. They could not cover him and he and Eli were beating them without even breaking a sweat

I don't know if anyone else feels this way

But this to me is an example of Eli’s leadership. To me those looked like typical Eli responses. Never take credit, always team first.

These young backs and recievers see that he’s had success, and they see how he deals with the media…they follow his lead.

No one on the offense seems to have any sort of ego at all, perhaps with the excpetion of Jacobs, but he was here before Eli, and also seems to be toning it down after putting up some numbers the last two weeks.

Good stuff.

it's just great when Eli takes it upon himself to add his own wrinkle to the playbook

I do’nt know if that’s leadership or just flat out common sense….but it’s welcomed.

Maybe a certain someone should be taking notes….

Agree 100%

He’s a leader…for sure.

I did see that Tom Brady sent him a text message telling him to shave that beard. Of course, Eli didn’t call him out regarding the hair…He just thought…“Aw, shucks” and chomped the milk-dipped Oreo in his hand.

That’s the sound of all those bandwagon fans over at the Saints blog jumping ship. Oh it’s nice when your team is winning, but welcome back to earth New Orleans.

I guess it’s a good thing you kept your tags on your new jersey. Just incase you want to take it back to the Black & Gold shop.

TC's job in question?

Not anymore. But everytime we start hearing the rumors, everytime Tiki Barber makes a public comment, & everytime we think we can’t get any worse, TC finds a way to turn it around and start the winning all over again. I do not like TC, but not b/c he doesn’t preach a good message. I think he has 150% attention from the team and when he most needs them to step up, he gets them to. Will I ever like TC? I don’t know. There are far too many things I dislike about him. But I will give him credit when it’s due. And it is definitely due. TC is doing a good job at the moment and I don’t see any reason to question him at the moment.

Let me just say this. If we win and TC does a good job, I’ll obviously be happy. But if we end up losing the next 11 games and get a new coach, I think I’d be happy too. And now that I’m happy, let’s find the very small (& few) imperfections in the game where we can improve. Cause if ur not getting better, ur getting worse.

by GiantLion on Oct 11, 2010 5:06 PM EDT reply actions

I agree

however isn’t ironic that it takes a couple of jabs from Tiki for the Giants to play this awesome.
I know TC has not lost the grip on the group, but what makes it more interesting is that the players defend their coach playing they way they did.
Perhaps what we need is more stupid comments from Tiki, no less.
just my thoughts

How many...

Nicks jerseys do you think the Giants sold today? Plus, good to see 4 deflected passes from the d-line. Haven’t seen many from the Giants over the years. And finally a few screen passes. I never think the Giants do a good job mixing them into the offense, especially to Bradshaw.

Not fair ED

I am absolutely thrilled with the Giants play of late, and thought they beat up on a tough opponent on the rode, but I think it would be silly to not worry about special teams going forward.

Say what youd like, that he is a rookie or that he is learning and getting better, but matt dodge simply does not look ready for the NFL. And his line drive kicks are being masked by wins and starters who are now being put on the coverage team (which makes injuries all the more concerning).

I am one of the rare giant fans who like gilbride and never take umbrage with the guy but the 3 straight passe up 17 mu third quarter were a bit bizzare, and obviously magnified by poor decisions on eli’s part. That said gilbride is not a concern of mine going forward, but special teams are.

I know brian jackson had 2 penalties on special teams but i think he will be a positive addition. That said reynaud has looked shaky at best, dodge even worse and it will bite us at some point. Tom Quinn has done very little under coughlin with apart from hixon.

The giants are looking good and i’m happy but to overlook their weaknesses now would be silly. I know coughlin isn’t and coverage has improved. He has looked into new punter and perhaps now a new returner as well so it’s now as if the coaching staff isn’t also concerned. Oh and add Ernie Pallidino to this group as well. The gilbride thing may be nitpicky, not the special teams concern.

When did I say

I wasn’t concerned about special teams? I did give Reynaud a WW, and I had mixed praise for Dodge. I do see improvement, but not everything you need to see yet.

by Ed Valentine on Oct 11, 2010 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

No

I suppose you did not, I just think that our special teams are still in the lower half of the league and it worries me, but then again I’m a neurotic jew from NY so that’s no surprising.

Ralph agrees

Again I like Gilbride, but this comes from the blue screen. Running 76% of the time in the third quarter up 24-3 is just not smart.

• The Giants had a 24-3 lead at halftime and a 24-10 lead midway through the third quarter. Yet, unconscionably – - or is it unconsciously? – - they threw on 16 of their 21 third-quarter plays. That’s 76.2% of their plays with a three- and two-TD lead that they took to the air. At one point they threw seven straight passes, resulting in two completions for eight yards and two interceptions. And then, after the second, they still threw on their next three plays. During a stretch where they threw on 12 of 15 plays, Eli Manning was 5 of 11 for 33 yards (with the two interceptions). … I don’t know where to begin complaining about that. I get that they consider short passes to be tantamount to runs. I get that they don’t have a ton of faith in their rushing attack (despite how well they’ve run in the last two games). But you have to run the ball at least, oh, half the time with a 21-point lead, don’t you? And by the way, don’t be quick to roast offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride over this. Last year, when I often complained about the play-calling, I was told that Manning often changes the play at the line of scrimmage based on what he sees. It’s a somewhat-rigid system where he has multiple options and if he sees, say, a safety inching up to clog a running lane, he’s supposed to check to a pass. And at that stage of the game, the Texans were rightfully playing for the run. My argument is that in that situation, a coach should take the option away or tell Manning "Sometimes it’s smarter to run into an eight-man front then throw a risky pass, especially when you’ve thrown two quick interceptions." Up 21 late in the game, someone has to start thinking about the clock. And their first three drives of the third quarter lasted just 3:47.

again..most likely

they took that ability out of Eli’s hands and said just run the ball, or throw the short timing routes.
