BBV by the numbers

The SB Nation development team took the time recently to compile a bunch of statistics for each of the blogs here on the network. Maybe the numbers are only truly interesting to me, but I thought I would share them with you.

They reveal the tremendous growth of this site in the past 12 months. They also reveal something else. Our man 'Free Bradshaw' has waaaaaaay too much time on his hands. 'Free' was 2009s leading commenter here at BBV with 5200 comments, more than double anyone else. AND 'Free' was the leading commenter at Pinstripe Alley with 9043.

'Free' I don't know what you do for a living. If your boss sees these numbers, though, that probably is not good news for you.

Here is a quick look at how 2009 broke down.

  • 2,031 new members (out of 2,465 total -- amazing!)
  • 1,226 stories
  • 382 FanPosts
  • 237 FanShots

Read on for more detail about the 2009 numbers.

as I do...

…I’d be curious to know how many posts contain the words, “step up and make big plays.” Given that I only became active in September, far too few for my liking…

And yeah, I, too, have often wondered myself what some metausers do here for a living…

by Step up and make big plays on Jan 8, 2010 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

"step up and make big plays."

YOU, should definitely have this patented! Think of the royalties?!

Oh, BTW, your helping my post count today. It’s all good! lol

Relax and let Ed run his site lol

For the past month..

I got no excuse..I’m home now..but still find a way to get on the CPU

but usually, I’m studying my notes on my laptop..and usually have BBV or some SBN site up on in another window. Its usually just to take my mind off it.

Even in class..usually something up there.

I think a lot of its game threads…tho probably not.

I doubt when I get a job I’ll be on here as much..but that’s at least a year and a half away….so that total’s going up!

N8 !

by FreeBradshaw on Jan 8, 2010 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

that's what I thought

I started my first “real” job on Monday, and I’ve been posting more this week than I have in months haha. Sitting at a computer all day lends itself to posting on SBN sites.

The problem is that SBN is so well set-up that you can always tell if there’s new posts or if someone has replied to you. It’s addictive in a way that no other website is.

Well I can speak for the Air Force at least from my perspective..I had no idea

About BBV back in desert storm, but if it did exist I probably would have tried to patch in..I was too busy shitting twinkies..I did smoke however..I’d land and open the canopy up early to air the damn cockpit out…plus I had a bottle hidden to spit my chew into..My ground crew were the only one that knew about that bottle and would replace it for me in between sorties.

I would step up BUT

I’ll have a baby by the end of Feb so my posting will die down a lot too.

Come March, I will likely earn the distinction of "Most Far-Flung BBV User"

…as I will be posting from 9 time zones away, and for the next two years. Unless, of course, we have some servicemen and women among us posting from Afghanistan (or Giants fans in East Asia or down under, who knows).

I’ll be jonesing for games, which means anyone out there with a Slingbox account should contact me, you would really be stepping up and making big plays if you could help one of your blue brethren out…

Maybe you can set up slingbox ;)

I left for SE Asia (work-related) back when our Giants were 5-0, I didn’t get a chance to set up a slingbox back home in Jersey…but will be back by end of Spring and then back here again by fall, so maybe by then I’ll set something up… but living out here, it’s really hard to catch streaming online games, the room would already be full and closed or after 15 minutes of streaming it’ll get bogged down b/c of bandwidth. Plus with the time zone difference…it’s pretty hard most of the time. Espn Asia doesn’t show NFL games only NCAA football games, at least here in the Philippines. If you get satellite then you can see it, but again the time difference. Plus, I only rent here ;)… They occassionaly show NFL playoffs on regular tv but it is very irregular. You have to really look for it… anyways, goodluck with that!

In all seriousness though

This is pretty interesting that the umbrella (SB Nation) can keep track of this. For my short time here, i know my post count is getting up there, but most of the time, it’s already been said, so why bother?! lol On the other side, if trolls do surface, i’m too nice of a person to berate them (though i actually could), so i’ll let others push the envolope…

Which, i wonder why there wasn’t a “how many times you were banned” stats? Just curious! lol

Lol, i was thinking about you too, when i mentioned being banned

I know you have said it publicly before, thats why.

Actually, you and a few others are sometimes the ones that push the envolope with trolls, and i’ll sit back and think, well, thats what i would’ve said, no need for more fuel! lol

by Hootman on Jan 11, 2010 10:45 AM EST up reply actions

I used to try to use reason, logic, statistics with the trolls

not to mention sometimes pointing out some of the stupid things they would write. The thing is, talking sense to a troll is like trying to feed spaghetti to a tree. It’s just not going to happen. And you end up sinking to that level and then Ed beats you with the ban stick. No good. I got me a attitude adjustment!

Way to go Free! SPEECH!!! SPEECH!!! SPEECH!!!

hahahahahha….in all seriousness tho the jump in numbers says alot to how ed runs this site, from maintaining and demanding professionalism from his posters, to leaving us with adequate reading material every morning, giving us much to ponder about our beloved blue guys.

Seriously tho, one day you need to organize a get together of some sorts, for all BBVers. i would love to meet freebrad, SUAMBP, landeta, ed, cj, jim, etc…it’s almost like a online family, with a bunch of brothers. I know it’d be hard to do since we are all spread out, g fan being in england, i know someone on here is in brazil, but maybe if our giants ever make it back to the promise land, something could be organized as a celebration of sorts.

Another thing Ed, you guys should put together some just for fun awards, like online academys. like freebrad could win poster of the year for his multiple informed posts. then you could have most anti Bill Sheridan poster, most pro Ramses poster, poster with the most known saying(that would go to step up and make…well you know the rest!)

Here’s one that you guys should get easy: who would win the award for most consistently negative poster of the year? first to get it wins a cookie.

by Landeta on Jan 8, 2010 7:45 PM EST up reply actions

I'm curious

how the BBV stats stack up against the other SBN sites? I haven’t checked other teams’ sites out but it’s hard to imagine a more prolific poster than Free, or that other teams’ sites are updated as diligently as Ed and crew manage. I mean the Rams page has got to be pretty much a wasteland right?

by SonictheHedgecock on Jan 8, 2010 6:20 PM EST reply actions

the Cowboys site gets just a ridiculous amount of traffic

like, almost too much – they have to have like 4 or 5 gamethreads for every game – it’s almost impossible to keep up with. A big part of that is b/c they’ve merged with a few other blogs (though it’s also b/c they do a really good job over there, gotta give them SOME credit, even if they are Cowboys fans)

Just based on my “travels” around to other teams blogs, I would say BBV is definitely towards the top of the most frequented football blogs – some of the other really high trafficked ones are the Colts blog, the Eagles blog, the Browns blog (I know, right?), and the Steelers blog, amongst others.

Don't kid yourself

the Browns have a huge following. . . thats a great sports town and the Browns are #1 out there, they love them they just suck.

by Landeta on Jan 8, 2010 8:05 PM EST up reply actions

haha yea, I know

you’d just think that since it’s been such a looooooooong time since they’ve even been decent, most of them would just give up.

I actually love the Browns fans though – I got involved in a really heated debate over there when that documentary about the Baltimore Colts band came out on ESPN, some Ravens fan posted something basically telling Browns fans they should just get over losing the original Browns already. It was crazy (and I was on the Browns fans site, b/c the Ravens guy was obnoxious – he also posted on the Colts site that they are terrible people for stealing the Colts. What a hypocrite)

The cowboys site

is full of fair weather fans.

I went on it a few times, whenever Bye Dawk tried to have an intelligent debate, they’d always call him a troll and call him names.

I hate the cowboys SBN

Yeah I jumped in and defended Dawk once and they jumped all over me..

They do have good fans though..But Dawk is certainly not a troll..that is disrespectful..and you all may jump on me for this but I don’t hate the Eagles or the Cowboys or the Redskins..I just love my Giants first and foremost, but I don’t hate the competition. A team earns what they achieve and our guys earned what they deserve this year..a Spectators seat..This year we’ll be back..I will root now for whoever represents the best division in the NFL.

by Bobbiblue on Jan 8, 2010 10:38 PM EST up reply actions

I'm with you

on the hate thing, Bobbi and. Like you, I always root for teams in our division when the Giants are out of the picture. When Rudy G expressed his hope for the Mets to win, he was widely criticized as a hypocrite because of his well-known love for the Yankees. I don’t get it.

by blue gonz on Jan 9, 2010 5:21 AM EST up reply actions

Want to here something funny

In baseball, I’m a big Yankee fan but can root for the Mets no problem BUT

In football I have hate in my heart and I don’t know why. And I hate Philly more than the Cowboys which I know puts me in the minority. Also for some strange reason I hate the Jets, but in baseball I like the Mets. . .go figure?

I think I hate the Jets becasue they play in our stadium, they’re always trying to grab headlines, their few fans can be a bit much, and it seems to me that all of the writers/personalities in local papers and media outlets are Jet fans so every football season it’s a Jets pep rally while the Giants get pushed into the backround despite the kinda lopsided history of the two organizations

I’m so bad I almost get more joy out of a Philly, Jet, or Cowboy loss than I do a Giant win. I’m sick I tell you! I wish I could get rid of the hate like Bobi and Blue. How do you do it fellas? . . . yoga like Blue suggests maybe? . . . ..

by Landeta on Jan 9, 2010 9:20 AM EST up reply actions

Same except in reverse order

I’m a met fan, but have recognized the futility of being the smaller brother of the yankees.

As for the jets, its pretty much because whenever they’re good, you see all these people at my school who are like “the Jets are teh best EVAR!!!”

but when they lose they’re nowhere to be found (Kind of the opposite of mets fans) I’m a proud Giants fan, through thick and thin

Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.

"but when they lose they’re nowhere to be found (Kind of the opposite of mets fans)"

Thats it to Will!! Thats the differeance Met fans seem to very loyal and are not front running at all so becasue they are NY fans I tend to sympothise with them a bit and root for them. Jet fans are very front running (if that’s at all possible for a franchise thats been as bad as they’ve been.) and almost arrogant when their team goes 9-7 or something

I think the other thing about the Met fan is I konw a lot of Giant fans that are Met fans so I respect the fans base becasue it’s a big loyal one, I don’t know many Jet fans at all and the few that I do now are unbearable.

by Landeta on Jan 9, 2010 1:17 PM EST up reply actions

I would still root for ANYONE ahead of the Eagles, and probably Cowboys. I despise them.

You play to win the game!

by Simms-McConkey on Jan 11, 2010 8:24 AM EST up reply actions

I think the problem with the Cowboys

is that the die-hards/good fans get lost in the overwhelming number of bandwagon fans. Very much like Yankees fans in that respect. The good ones are out there, though, and BTB has a few of them for sure.

2009 Did Not Happen

by cjmulrain on Jan 8, 2010 11:10 PM EST up reply actions

You hit it CJ

I’ve spoken to real die hard Cowboy fans from Texas and they realy are not so bad at all, objective and respectfull, a LOT better than you’re typicall Eagles fan, thats why I don’t despise the Cowboys as much as the Eagles. I think the problem with the Cowboy fan is in the NY area is there are a lot of front running fans in NY who could not take the Giants misery in the 70’s so they adopted the Cowboys. You know the guy that only watches football when the Cowboys are good and acts like anybody that beats the Cowboys is a fluke. I can remeber growing up in the 80’s when the Giants were great and the Tom Landry era fell you could not here a peep out of Cowboy fans than all of a sudden after they beat the Niners in 92 Cowboy fans were all over the place. A lot of these NY area Cowboy fans represent the loud obnoxious frontrunning Yankee fan.

As a Yankee fan I know there are a loud minority of front running fans that shoot their mouths off and are arrogant all of the time but that does not represent a lot of us. Case in point Mike Francesa of the FAN. . . he does not root for a football team, outside of Notre Dame nor does he care much for the NBA or NHL but he’s a die hard Yankee fan, exactly the type of blowheart that Yankee fans are precived as.

by Landeta on Jan 9, 2010 9:34 AM EST up reply actions

There definitely are

but what I like about the Giants blog is that even when we’re amazing, we don’t get flooded with bandwagon fans. We’re all pretty much even keeled guys who take the good with the bad.
Some of us know what its really like to root for a bad giants team (not me thank God).

Your prolific posting has me wonderng FB:

What’s your major? I worked with an accountant once who told me he chose accounting as his major because he didn’t have to go to class. He had a natrual gift for it and got all he needed from the text books. Are you in a similar situation?

by blue gonz on Jan 8, 2010 9:06 PM EST up reply actions

Nah George..Free is an Economist major..

You can put them all hand in had, and they never reach a conclusion..

over 20,000 posts and you only joined in March. I thought I spent a lot of time on SBN and I’ve only got 7250 since 2008!

I will see

if i can find out where ‘Free’ ranked among commenters across the network. Not sure I can get that number, but now I’m curious.

by Ed Valentine on Jan 8, 2010 10:04 PM EST up reply actions

That's are new DC..Free..If he can post that much..I want him in charge of our defense..but it may take longer to prepare..

So he’d have to tone it down a few days in order to have the gameplan ready..If I posted that much I’d be one of those dudes with a cardboard sign at the end of an exit ramp: “Ex-vet..will work for a TV”…

by Bobbiblue on Jan 8, 2010 10:13 PM EST up reply actions

There you have it folks!!..Free just admitted he is loosey and goosey..Philandering..

On any site he can !!..Cuddling up to anyone rooting for any team..anytime if they have a ’different"..ahem..view..Shame on you Free !!..Dr. Phil wants to see you !!

by Bobbiblue on Jan 8, 2010 8:55 PM EST reply actions

Now we know that Free..has too much Free-time..and the Bradshaw part of his handle..

Is just a comfortable brand of of furniture that enables him to lay back and type his commentary across the entire league, while us poor folks are at least attempting to make our spouses think we are paying at least some attention to our “Honey-Do-Lists”..It just ain’t right..Free is Free to re-vamp every team in the league, while we sit back and get grilled over when we are going to get to work on our lists which consist of chores..Frees list consists of his ideas on how to improve every teams offense and defense..Our lists consist of A)The Giants..and then it gets cloudy from there but if you examine them closely, you can decipher:“When are you going to fix this or fix that”..Coach Ed..Suspend this man !! I officially log a BBV protest !!..lol

by Bobbiblue on Jan 8, 2010 9:14 PM EST reply actions

Don't get all emotional on us..but we all do deserve a victory speech!!

Everybody..I hereby cast my vote for Freebradshaw to be inducted into the BBV HOF….Cast your votes..

FreeBradshaw is just about my favorite commenter

half the time I go to write something, he already has so I don’t bother

You play to win the game!

by Simms-McConkey on Jan 11, 2010 8:26 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, it's like he's a robot

A new story comes out and he’s one of the first to comment? I bet Ed could dispatch a story at 3am and Free would know it! lol

Should I be proud i'm in the top 10?

Or disturbed?

Let’s just say our school gave us laptops, and well, that may not have been a great idea.

If i ever got a blackberry or Iphone…

Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.

Off topic..Hey Landeta!

How’s that due date coming along?..We are all waiting for our first official cheerleader and my wife keeps asking me..I already ordered her some Giants “booties”, but the wife is waiting to find out how big she is when she is born…She asked me and I said heck I don’t know she isn’t here yet, dear..She didn’t like any of the other “Infant” Giants garb..so she’ll probably go get more dainty stuff..

by Bobbiblue on Jan 8, 2010 10:50 PM EST reply actions

Dainty stuff?

Just make sure you buy it from the Big Blue View store. A man’s gotta make a living, you know!

by Ed Valentine on Jan 8, 2010 11:10 PM EST up reply actions

Hey Bobbi

Thanks for asking, still Feb 23rd . .. If she’s like my wife and I she’ll be a big baby then a small adult (I’m 5 “8” the wife is 5 “6”). You’ll know when she’s here becasue I won’t be blogging nearly as much, my wife has already told me thats one of things I have to cut out! BUT I still have my Smartphone when I’m working so I’ll do my best to keep up.

yeah baby!

I’m up there! woot woot! Thanks, Ed!

Well here's the 'victory speech'

F the Cowboys, Jets, Patriots and Eagles. I hope the Cowboys, Jets and Patriots lose a slow..agonizing game on Saturday night.

And of course…the Eagles get blown out the following week.

There…put that on a plaque or something.

N8 !

by FreeBradshaw on Jan 8, 2010 11:40 PM EST reply actions

only good thing about the cowboys playing the eagles

is that all of us will go to sleep tomorrow knowing that one of our hated rivals lost their last game of the season. BBV- you guys should do a post “Who would you rather lose, the Cowboys or the Eagles”. My vote is for the Cowboys considering the new stadium (might as well finish the year the same way it started) and I love the ‘Romo can’t win in the playoffs’ storyline.

by pataroons on Jan 9, 2010 3:40 AM EST up reply actions

Yep, right on

It’ll either be Dallas can’t win in the playoffs oooorrrr………….

Is this the end of McNabb and Reid in Philly, more McNabb becasue Reid signed that extension. . . .

I can’t wait for either but I’m actually hoping for the latter, I hate the Eagles.

by Landeta on Jan 9, 2010 9:43 AM EST up reply actions

fifth highest post total?

Wow… then again I am a notorious game thread flooder.

by brisulph on Jan 9, 2010 12:20 AM EST reply actions

game threads can really skew things

Those are basically the only reason I have more posts on the Mets blog than I have over here – 162 game threads jack up your post count a lot more than 16 game threads do

If I got all the games in my room I would

but sometimes I have to go to the bar. I even have an iphone but its too much to focus on the game and post alot.

Free FreeBradshaw

I always enjoy FB’s comments, I hope he keeps posting throughout 2010! FB- what’s the over-under on your comment # in the next year? I’ll take the over, regardless.

by pataroons on Jan 9, 2010 3:37 AM EST reply actions

I would have had 1965..

But Ed threw the yellow flag on me for “Unnecessary Gruffness”…lol!!

by Bobbiblue on Jan 9, 2010 8:54 AM EST reply actions

Throw your red flaf before the

next post, Bobbi, and brisulph will review the arbitrate.

by blue gonz on Jan 9, 2010 3:51 PM EST up reply actions

I need to try and crack the top ten next year.

I would have more to say but its really hard to talk football after a loss for me. I try and forget about the experience and focus more on next week then dwell on the loss. Try to stay positive and when we lose doubt creeps into the mind and I need positivity. So keep thinking Dallas loses and we get the 15th pick.
