The Giants have a season recap press conference scheduled for 12:55 PM, Tom Coughlin and Jerry Reese are both expected to speak. No official word on Sheridan yet, other outlets are just reporting the Daily News story that Ed had for you earlier this morning.

What took so long?
“season recap press conference”
Just make the presser for an earlier time, step up to the podium, or belly up to the table (whatever makes them comfortable) and tell the world, “we sucked”!
probably better off...
I’d think Coughlin, and Reese for that matter…weren’t in the ‘talking to the media’ state of mind up until now (and even still probably are still seething).

Hello friends
Your friendly Cowboys fan here not to spread hate, but a report! According to SI.com, the Giants are preparing to fire Sheridan.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/morning-jolt/01/04/0104/index.html
Good luck next year guys, and as always, don’t look forward to playing you.
Hey Jim
Where can we find this interview? Will it be streaming on the Giants site or will it be aired on TV somewhere? I would like to watch the whole thing and not just excerpts on SportsCenter. Thanks!
GO NY GIANTS!!
Regardless of what happens to Sheridan....
I think it was because of guys like Osi, maybe even Pierce and Mike Johnson…guys who are ‘established’..or think they are established and ‘elite’ players (Johnson’s always jawing with the other team…he probably thinks he’s something he’s not).
Probably the understatement of this new year…but maybe hiring a guy who was never a DC…was a bad idea?
Dunno what the consensus was of him when he was the LB’s coach…but maybe not many liked him as it is?
From what I heard from guys that “get it”, like Cofield (who IMO was one of the only guys who actually came to play on the DL..him and Tuck) and even Kiwi…Sheridan wasn’t the sole problem.
It wasn’t even injuries either (tho of course they were a big part). It was lack of respect and trust for the DC.
Remember the 1st 2 games of 2007? Guys were quoted as not trusting the DC and the scheme yet.
Spags was obviously a different breed of DC. Sheridan just wasn’t that sort of guy…and the team didn’t trust him enough to rally around.
I hope the new guy, who ever he is..is a veteran, a former DC with plenty of experience.
N8 !
I see your point, but
Spags was never a DC when the Jints hired him. I/m interested in seeing who else goes with Sheridan (if anybdy.) Also, will they announce his replacement?
I know..
I wasn’t making a point of the 1st year DC thing…just the fact that Spags was a different type of person..someone a team can rally around.

Spags was never a DC
because Reid never let him interview for a job until the Giants job in 07. Reid wanted Spags to take over for JJ when he left Spags pleaded with him to interview for the Giants job and Reid finally obliged. Spags though never a DC was highly coveted as a potential DC around the League. I don’t know if we can say the same for BS.

Here's an analogy...
In the U.S. Navy (most times), when someone is promoted in rank and title, he is sent to another unit to assume that new higher role. Whether its the Executive Officer who screens to become a Commanding Officer or the First Class Petty Officer that makes Chief, they hardly ever assume that new role with same ship. They have developed a repoir with their personnel in that role that is hard to break when they need to become the boss.
by Larry Soprano on Jan 4, 2010 12:57 PM EST up reply actions
It's a good way to handle.
In civilian life, it’s harder. The military is so big it can do that. The hardest transition in business is the jump from labor to management (e.g., a guy who gets promoted from the line to foreman.) It’s even hard to go one step up from peon I,II,II,etc. to Honcho I, etc. Of course in the military, you have guys jump up to command guys who had been on the same level, like battlefield promotions. Baby Face Audie Murphy went from private to Lt staying with the same Infantry company.
True, but...
I guess my point was that I am not surprised that the “quiet understudy of the player’s favorite DC” had a hard time adjusting to try to become the leader of that same unit.
by Larry Soprano on Jan 4, 2010 1:33 PM EST up reply actions
I'm think that since they hired from within...
probably Peter Giunta would’ve been a better choice, since he was indeed a former DC.
…as it stands right now, Dick Jauron is probably the best option out there. A guy with plenty of experience..someone who’s worked with Coughlin before.
Unless there’s some unknown Eagles assistant available (….like you know who…) I think Jauron has to be looked at first.

Live on Giants.com
If you can sneak away from the boss for a bit, the press conference will be shown live on Giants.com.
No announcement today
TC was just asked if BS will be back and he said they haven’t had time to sit and evaluate.
The problems on D go beyond Bill Sheridan
Lots of us see that. He was an easy scapegoat. Deservedly so. But it’s important we come to grips with the fact that the D’s problems run deep. Lack of a leader. Good, but no great players. Outright bad players. Injuries. Lack of heart. Injuries are often bad luck, so maybe we swing away from that next season, but the other things, they set are in the bones issues that only some new blood in both coaching and on-field talent as well as holding the losers who quit on their fans to account can rectify. Threaten the jobs of the supposed stars. This season should not stand! Sheridan didn’t motivate, called some more than questionable schemes, so he goes. But the rot is still there.
Getting rid of Sheridan just the tip of the ice berg
I think most here agree that the defensive problems go beyond Sheridan. Getting rid of Sheridan is just the first of many steps we will be making to have a successful 2010 season. So the rot should be cleaned up too.

we need someone fiery
I think we should get the Bill’s DC/ Interim head coach, Perry Fewell I believe his name is.
He’s not going to keep the HC job, but I think they’ll be keeping him.
The guys great. A team that had injuries as bad as us, if not worst, and with less talent was able to keep them in the games every week.
I don’t have any answers to fix around, but I’d bet this guy would make the team better, adn he has what Sheridan didn’t, some fire.
Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.
When there's a WILL there's a WAY
He's available
Reports are that the Bills let the whole coaching staff go.
by Larry Soprano on Jan 4, 2010 2:00 PM EST up reply actions
But
they say he’s still going to get an interview for the HC job. Not sure how that makes sense, but that’s the rumor.
he'll interview
to comply with the rooney rule. its a farce. he’s a token minority candidate.
the skins interviewed someone on staff before zorn was fired to comply with the rooney rule. the league looked into it to make sure it was a “legit” interview. how can it be legit when the guy has no chance at the job?
i love it
when peter king is wrong. he said twice that there wouldn’t be a lot of firings and turnovers. already the skins fired zorn and bills fired the entire staff.
king is a great writer but his opinions suck, he’s always always wrong.
I agree 100% on Fewell.
I was talking about potential DC candidates while I was watching the debacle on Sunday, and he was the first name I thought of.
I didn’t know he’d be fired…but I figured as such cuz I heard that Bill Cowher to the Bills was probable.
Perry Fewell would be a good choice. Not sure his style of cooridnating, and the Bills haven’t exactly been the picture of success….but under his watch as a HC this year, the Bills weren’t all that bad.

2010 matchups
The Giants’ 2010 regular season opponents are set. In addition to home-and-home series with division rivals Dallas, Philadelphia and Washington, the Giants will host Chicago, Detroit, Jacksonville, Tennessee and Carolina (for the third consecutive season). The Giants’ non-division road games will be in Green Bay, Minnesota (for the third year in a row), Houston, Indianapolis (the second professional meeting of Eli and Peyton Manning) and Seattle. The NFL schedule will be announced in April.
Something needs to happen this offseason for us to stand a chance against these teams
Tenn,Carolina,Green Bay,Vikes,Houston,Indy plus the nfc East
further devolpment of the offense, and a complete rebuild of the D and special teams
and a little something called GIANT PRIDE
jeez
we got all the good teams away and the bad teams at home…..

So if the giants stay at #15 overall.....
what do we do?
I go w/ Safety or Oline.
I move Diehl inside and look for another Tackle.
The question is, who do we grab. Mays and maybe even Thomas will be available at 15. I like Thomas as a Strong Safety….
"If you don't know what you're doing... just rush the quarterback" - LT
I say trade back.
Been off and on with Brandon Spikes..maybe he is a wise choice?
I don’t think the OL is a need just yet, at least a first round need. Reese needs to do some more HW tho…I’d love to find a late round gem OL.
I’d stay far away from Taylor Mays, that is, unless they get the feeling, and plan, to move him to LB.
Earl Thomas would be nice, he’s a playmaker back there. He’s not the biggest guy (5"10 195lbs), but a playmaker nonetheless, and very fast too (biggest reason he’s a good choice.).
I know “Larry Soprano” is one, but I think more of us need to be on the Dexter McCluster bandwagon.
Definitely not in round one, but like say…round 3, a guy like this needs to be on the Giants. KR/PR, Wildcat RB (yea…Giants need to do this…). Just all out swiss-army knife type player, Giants need this. Oh yea..dude’s got lightening quickness..and toughness needed for a player his size (5"8 170lbs may be an ‘over’).
N8 !
yeah, i like Thomas....
don’t know how mays would play FS in the NFL w/ all that size. who knows maybe he could transition into more of a SS?
I know there is talk of trading down. I was talking about it this morning actually. my only concern is who is going to want to trade up to 15? I think if someone is willing to make a big splash on draft day they may want to get up inside the top 10…maybe even top 5.
If we could swing it where we can get more bang for our buck than i’d do it….but at this point i’m so concerned about Safety that if a guy like Thomas is there, i may just grab him….
"If you don't know what you're doing... just rush the quarterback" - LT
I was thinking this too...
WHO wants to trade to 15?
I doubt that Reese is not gonna inquire about shopping the pick tho.
And yea…reading some scouting reports on THomas…5"10, 200lbs, runs a 4.4, IS a playmaker.
Him and Phillips, if he’s healthy, may make the Saftety tandem a DYNAMIC Duo. Imagine that? Going from a gaping hole to a dynamic duo?
It may be overrating him some…but Earl THomas is a Polamalu/ Reed type of guy.
He’s not in the convo like Eric Berry simply cuz he was a bit under the radar till this season.
…the only question, as a redshirt sophmore, is he ready and does he actually enter the draft?
I’ve heard he’s gonna test the water…if he gets the idea he’s a first rounder, he’s coming out.
JR…that’s on YOU!
N8 !
Eric Berry is a Reed / Polamalu type of guy
Earl Thomas is an ok prospect, he could be a pretty good player but he is not anywhere near Berry’s level.

Just have them watch the 86 yard run in the Cotton Bowl
That alone might get people on the bandwagon. The guy had multiple gears he shifted into on that run.
by Larry Soprano on Jan 4, 2010 3:44 PM EST up reply actions
I like the move Diehl back to OG idea.
I think they should keep McKenzie and sign a RT to compete with him.
Beatty I think needs to be the LT, I think he can be as good as Diehl is and probably better protect Eli’s blindside.
Diehl and Beatty on the left-side would be excellent.
I dunno who’s gonna be out there as far as FA RT, but definitely I’d go with a FA RT over drafting one at this point, at least early on. If they fit a OT, or a guy who can play all along the line ( and willing to learn all positions) in the later rounds (5-7), that should be an option.
N8 !
I want them to draft another OT in the 1st or 2nd round.
Frankly, it’s time to start re-doing the O-line. There is always value in the 2nd round with OTs, so it’s probably better to start there. Most guys who aren’t seen as elite LTs end up in the 2nd (like Beatty — though I think some teams missed the boat on him). It’s a perfect spot to pick up another OT.
And I don’t know about you, but I need to FART badly, too ;)
Anthony Davis from RU!
I’m an RU fan and from Jersey so I love those Jersey RU guys and always hope the Giants draft one. I wanted Kenny Britt last year too.
Seems JR
agrees with me that they got too many WR this past draft. They are good…but too many (there’s only one football).
Do they trade some? Doubt it…can never be sure who goes down and when.
N8 !
Too many?
You bet. I really like Nicks. A lot, but sheesh, they knew enough to focus on the D, so blah, blah, blah.
the thing is..
was it the fans and media’s fault for BLINDLY saying that the loss of Plaxico was a reason for their playoff ouster?
Did Reese just try to please the fans/media?
I hope the fact that if it played a part, that the fact that no one really can place a finger (blindly or not..) on the true reason for the failures this season, allows Reese to just draft who he sees fit.
I mean..I really hope that it didn’t play a part, cuz Reese wouldn’t be all that smart if he was listening to that Plaxico BS.
N8 !
I think he thought he sured up the defensive woes
with the FA signings so he adressed WR big time in the draft. I really believe he put a lot of faith into BS and all of the FA sigings and the current crop of players.
I also think he also knew that drafting one WR might be risky becasue of high propesnsity for these guys to be busts so he after Nicks he went after Barden & Beckum when he really should of drafted a saftey and LB. They also seem to built their team around Eli so they do all they can to give him playmakers like the Colts do with Payton.
I obviously had no problems with Nicks because who knew what Manning was and how good Smitty would be but I felt the same way Blue did even at the time I questioned whether or not they should draft a Saftey or another LB in the early rounds, they seemed thin at Saftey and I think that was JR’s biggest mistake he really gambeled on that position and it did not payoff. Sure the FA’s sucked but he was identifying and adressing an issue on the team he just scewed up, not drafting a saftey or LB might not of made a whole hell of a difference this year but at least they would be further ahead going into next year. Now we look more like the soft run-n-shoot Oilers in a tough division than any Giant team I can ever remember.
I didn't think they should have gotten Beckum
but other than that, I thought we were set.
The FA really cluster fudged with injuries or lack of talent (in Bernard and CCs case)
Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.
When there's a WILL there's a WAY
trading WR
would be a bad decision.
Other than Steve Smith who might warrant a 1st rounder nobody else would really get us more than a mid 3rd rounder.
by mclaren_is_the_best on Jan 4, 2010 2:48 PM EST reply actions
yup.
They have no idea Barden will even be as good as Manningham was in his first action.
They’ll possibly lose Hixon anyway, so getting rid of another, meaning losing 2 WR…would be unwise.
Also for Eli and continuity’s sake, it would be unwise.
Anyone who wants to trade Manningham should realize that.
N8 !
Manningham might
He’s got loads of potential and is very young. Maybe they could get a defensive player of similar value to a team that nees WR help but is heavy on S, DT’s or LB’s. Doubt it but it might be an option if no CBA gets done and the FA pool is diluted.
Anyone seen what John Mara said after the press conference?
Damn, he´s become my hero. Said everything that JR and TC should be.
http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2010/01/ny_giants_team_president_and_c.html
Yeah, we like NFL here in Brazil.
Mara went off
He owns the team and can say that. TC has to coach these guys, so he can’t publicly say some of those things. But, yes, I am glad someone stood up and said it.
My God he sounded like Steinbrenner!!!!
The only difference was he did not call out individuals!
I loved it! Thats the only thing making me feel good right now about this team.
New stadium with PSL’s, the Jets winning the final game at Giants Stadium to make the playoffs the way the Giants typically win, Eagles & Cowboys surpassing the Giants on the field this year when it seemed liked the Giants were the team to beat in the East. Throw all of those things on top of the crap that we all saw and I think that led to this type of reaction from Mara.
Redskins 1 just landed
reported on dc radio that shanahan and his wife just left snyder’s personal hangar
I heard it on Lavars radio show while doing my first of many chores on my honey do list
I dont like how Garafolo
stated that Reese used the “injury crutch”. Listening to the PC, I don’t think he used injuries as a crutch. Although injuries was not the main reason for this seasons demise, it did play a role.
Reese
did go a little overboard blaming injuries. They do have an impact, but that’s no excuse for the guys who are left not giving effort.
I think part of that is a survival tractict
His FA’s were injury plague busts and and he screwed up the saftey position big time by not adding quality depth and only carrying three on the final roster. His blaming the injuries is his way of justifing his horrendous 2009 acquasitions.
Will be an interesting offseason
In 2010 there will be:
- a new look OL. Depends on who moves where. I like Diehl at LG Beatty at LT and McKenzie or other at RT.
- a new LB core. Right now it is Boley, Goff and Sintim. Likely not good enough.
- new coaches on D. Nuff said.
I would love to see:
- a FA RT or a 2nd 3rd round pick at OL
- a playmaker (maybe FB gets Dexter McCluster)
- two new safeties to go with MJ and KP
The 2010 season just started.
2010 season started
in the Panthers game when Hedge was caught for holding and Smith’s TD was called back. Team called it a season at that point.
I thought your first "I would love to see" was
FART, not thnking you meant Free agent right tackle. . . LOL! It took me 5 mins to figure that out!
I think he meant Flozell
