Looking ahead to 2010
As our New York Giants head into their first meaningless football game in five seasons today, Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News is looking into the future.
He offers an excellent breakdown of which key players are likely to stay and which ones are likely to go. His most interesting theory? An uncapped 2010 season might be bad news for Brandon Jacobs' future as a Giant.
Ernie Palladino also recently offered some thoughts on who is likely to be in and who will be out next season.
In the coming weeks we will be giving you lots of our own thoughts on this topic. For now, though, check these out and discuss.

Tough to get into "game day" mindset for this one ...
and I suffered through all the wilderness years. It comes down to expectations. In the ’70’s I prayed for a winning season and maybe, just maybe a playoff appearance (1970 was the only year I remember coming close). This year we had what seemed a pretty stacked roster, two years removed from a Supe win, so 2009 is particularly tough to take.
As for 2010, Ralph V. was spot on for the players he covered. Just think Beatty might be at LT instead of RT, if we can get someone FA-wise for RT, allowing Diehl to move to LG. That would be a stud O-line again. I hope both Seubert and McKenzie are back (maybe for less $$) but only as back-ups.
Hope the first 4 picks in 2010 are on D, as we have pretty good quality and depth at most O positions. Success next year really boils down to the ability of guys like Goff, Sintim, Alford, Nicks, Manningham etc. to be ready for prime time, and guys like Phillips, Ross, Tuck, Osi, Bradshaw, Canty etc. to be fully healty again.
Agree on the draft
There has to be a heavy defensive emphasis, regardless of what order they choose to go in.
Seubert would be a good backup.
They could use him as a TE in “Heavy” formations.
I think they MUST trade down unless someone they really like falls to them.
Dunno where exactly they’d be given a win or loss today…but its probably gonna be top 20.
I’d trade back and stock some picks. This is a deep draft too..much deeper then last year.
N8 !
Love the idea of trading down ...
especially in a deep draft. Rather have 3 #2’s than a #1 and a #2.
Only pull the trigger on a #1 if it’s a defender (LB ?) that we could see contributing significantly in year 1.
I agree with you..
Also I think Tynes is killing us on kick-offs. Something needs to happen there..foe the life of me I can’t understand how a guy can hit 45-50 yard FGs with plenty of room to spare, unable to reach the end-zone on KOs..Phillips response to treatment is also a key concern, but yes defense has to be a draft focus (although I wonder how they would have fared without Sheridan)..I guess we’ll find out.
I also think they need to seriously review and assess the training staff..Something is amiss there with all the Hammy and groin pulls they suffered and never recovered from.
It's not all Tynes
some of it is coaching. Intentionally kicking it short.
Diehl at LG is great
but only if Beatty can play LT ( he can) and if there is a starter available for RT in the FA market. Dunno. But that is the optimal OL for 2010 if that FA is a stud.
Can anyone see TC playing a rookie at RT?
McKenzie as a backup would be great as well. The guy is still solid but too often hurt.
I think its more likely...
that Beatty is the LT and Diehl the RT.

Beatty moving to LT...
…why not do it in today’s game and get him some quality snaps at the position in a live game, instead of trying to move him over in the preseason? With nothing left to play for except pride, the future is now for the 2010 New York Football Giants.

Only today if Eli is out of the game ...
Still need to protect the franchise QB. Let him get a full camp at LT before we risk that.
didn't he play LT at UConn?

Beatty not ready
I think Beatty is showing some real progress but for him to be ready next year he’ll really have to hit the weight room hard. I saw him today not getting too much of a push and getting abused on passing downs.
I think he’s a starter maybe half way through next year but I don’t think he has the strength to start and most definitely not protecting Eli’s blind side.
I like Diehl at RT and pick up a FA tackle for left. It should be interesting to see if McKenzie will take a pay cut to stick around.
I think a pretty stacked roster is just something we think we have
but in reality we do not.
Looking at our depth chart…. You look around it and there aren’t that many great players. Not many players you can say “oh yes this guy is top 5, top 3 at his position.”
There aren’t many playmakers on the team, there aren’t any players that we can be proud of. Maybe possibly you can say it about Tuck and O’Hara but Tuck has been MIA this whole year and a center is not exactly the most important player on the team.

Chris Snee
Eli Manning. Steve Smith. Hakeem Nicks.
And who knows, maybe Ahmad Bradshaw, Brandon Jacobs, Osi, Webster, Ross, & Phillips have healthy, bounce back years next year, and all of a sudden this 8-7 team looks a hell of a lot like a 12-4 team.
"[The Giants] beat us down. We were beat by a grown-man team, a team we want to be like one day. They came in here and took it to us. Out-manned us, out-gunned us. ... It wasn't even close." - Raheem Morris, 9/27/09
we need someone that scares people in our back 7
webster and kp is all we have. Some of the other guys are solid, but we need that LB that makes people go “oh no, we need to deal with this guy today”.
most of those we hope are great players
they haven’t proven it, Nicks could be a 1 year wonder, Jacobs has always been a product of the oline, Osi had 1 good year in 2005, Webster couldn’t beat out an old Sam Madison until the end of 2007, Ross has never been more than decent, Phillips we don’t know if we will ever even see him in a Giants uniform and then again even if he is healthy we have not seen enough of him to “crown his ass”

I agree that on some
except Webster. I think it is very clear that the guy is a good, becoming great corner ever since that late 2007.
Also, maybe we aren’t completely sure of Nicks yet, but to my 25 year Giants fan eyes he’s as sure a draft pick as we’ve ever had. Unless the guy has a major injury (knock on wood), he’s going to be a very good WR for a long time. I’m sure of it.
Agreed
It’s been so long since we’ve had someone at SS that can come up and hit the snot out of someone. We don’t need a Ron Laundry that gets burned in coverage but someone that can be a little more agressive.
Please – I don’t want to see the following people back next year from the secondary – Rouse, Dockery, CC. PLEASE
Tuck has been injured
since week 2.
The fact that he’s still playing with as much heart as he does each game is amazing, but you can’t do much as a DE with one arm
Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.
When there's a WILL there's a WAY
Good links
This whole CBA issue clouds lots of personnel decisions. Will be interesting to se how it plays out
Disagree that Hedgecock and Canty should go. Hedgecock does what Giants need him to – block. Think one more year for Canty to see if he can contribute as a DE. Jury is out.
Robbins, Bernard, AP, Clark, CC, Dockery, McKenzie, Moss, Wilkerson and Wimper – gone.
Seubert becomes a super sub at C/G but Boothe as a starter? Not sure. Beatty starts at RT.
Today I will be watching players – Goff, Beatty and CBs as TV allows. Giants have a solid nucleus going into 2010. JR will make it right.
Bernard should be on Ernies list
he’s a mut.
As down on Canty as I am I think cutting him would be a rash emotional descision. Yes he’s been one of the biggest Giant dissapointments since Ron Dayne BUT he does deserve one more look unless we bring in a ton of DT’s next year. Though I’m just about upset at Canty’s 09 performance as Ernie is I have a bad feeling we’re going to be talking about this guy as a legendary bust for a long long time.
Question ...
If 2010 is an uncapped year, could we cut Canty right near the end of next season if he is not producing, and have all that remaining guaranteed money count in 2010 ? That way, at least we don’t make a rash decision, and give him the benefit of the doubt injury-wise for awhile.
2nd Question: If no CBA, and 2010 is uncapped, if 2011 does not yield a strike or lock-out, are we in uncapped years until a CBA gets done ? I get the uneasy feeling that Snyder and Jones are going to get to hit the reset button on their cap hell that they’ve created over the years, pushing things ever further into the future.
Uncapped
The Skins and Cowchips have money to spend in FA but very few teams would have the dollars that the Giants would have in an uncapped year. Very few seats in the NFL would cost as much as a seat in Giant stadium.
If the ownership doesn’t try to match or come close to what the Skins and Cowchips do in FA then I would be highly disappointed.
For once, can we get the big FA pickup instead of the rest of the teams in our division? Please don’t let the Eagles or Cowboys pickup Brandon Marshall. PLEASE!
why?
Who cares about Brandon Marshall? He’s a TO redux..and I doubt that those 2..who have experienced Owens, would do it again.
If there was a big name defensive player out there…then lets do that.
N8 !
Cowchips
I think that if it’s uncapped then the Cowboys will let go of old Roy and get Marshall.
I rather not play against that guy. I don’t think he’s a TO redux other than fact that he has all the abilities. He doesn’t scream at other players on the team and I think McDaniels is trying to make an example of this guy and stake his reputation.
Gilbride
Ed,
Since you have gotten me to be more open-minded about Gilbride, will you be more critical of Gilbride if the GIants again have one of the bottom 5 offenses in the red zone next year (which would be the 3rd year in a row)? No doubt this offense is talented and can move the football. But it is hard to be a great football team when you can’t score TDs.
As a side note, Houston scores a TD 81% of the time in the red zone.
Gilbride stays. Sheridan goes (should)
Eli getting better under KG. WRs most exciting, ever. Running game needs fixing, but I believe much of that comes from BJs one dimenionality and the O-Line’s age. Yes. Gilbride stays. Sheridan should go, as we all agree, though I vote no in regards to management pulling the plug. I don’t trust Giants mgmt. But I hope I’m wrong. The wind is telling me I am.
BJ — can we trade him? 4th rd at least? I’d do it. The rest, I agree with Vachianno. I like Beatty. Kinda like Boothe. Tweak the O-Line. Massive reconstruction on D-Line. and DBs. as for RBs. could be trouble looming. BJ is not the answer. He’s an obstacle.
I'm not looking forward to the future in our division
We don’t match up well with the Eagles and Cowboys and if Shanahan goes to the Redskins…boy, its not looking like a good 2010!
by mclaren_is_the_best on Jan 3, 2010 12:52 PM EST reply actions
meh...
they can beat all 3.
Giants will be under the radar next year.
Shanahan has been overrated since he lost Elway as well as the many very good players they had on defense in the late 90’s. Him going there is just bound to be Marty Schottenheimer part 2.
N8 !
by FreeBradshaw on Jan 3, 2010 12:57 PM EST up reply actions
we beat the Cowbitches
2x how can you say we don’t match up. Danny Snyder still owns the Redskins. The Eagles are an issue cause we couldn’t sack 5 this year and we couldn’t cover they’re receivers. That’s a problem.
The Giants have a long road ahead
I have a bad feeling 2010 might be the last year for TC because this team will bad next year. There is little talent on this team especailly on the defensive side of the ball. In fact I think defensively talent wise the Giants are in the bottom 5. There are no LB’s or D-Tackles that are legit starters in fact most of the guys we have will be out of the league soon.
Dallas has signifiacanlty more talent, Philly has good talent and continuity with coaching staff, Wash will get better under Shannahan but they have talent issues on O.
Any chance TC leaves
when he refuses to fire Sheridan.
I just have this funny feeling he’ll try to make a point that Sheridan is the right guy.
Coaching Staff
Time for the GM to step up to the plate and fire the whole staff. The defense just quite on the new guy and Coughlin didn’t do anything about the situation all year.
So much for playing for pride today..or to secure a job..
This game is like picking up your dog’s doo-doo with your nose and a toothpick vs a standard-issued plastic baggy..and to top it all off, I have to listen to “Loose, Goose and Moose”..Goose did make a comment about how Peterson could transgress back in time and play with the likes of Jim Brown..Hell our whole team is playing like they could transgress to 1966!!..Honey, hand me a toothpick, I have to walk the dog…
..and did I say a few nice things about KG lately?
Excuse me…“Barf”…
We rushed a measly 12 times vs. Vikings 32..That stinks..
I think it was more them knowing we can’t stop the run..Let’s face it..We don’t run the ball anymore…
we don't run the ball...
cuz we can’t run the ball.
Not even effectively..or at least the threat of a good run, kinda like the Chargers and Colts threaten with it.
The Giants just flat out stunk at it…for a big part of the year.
N8 !
yep
1st and 10 – run for 0
2nd and 10 – run for 2
3rd and 8 – you can’t run the ball now. We all know we would kill KG if he tried that
