Sunday Playoff Open Thread

Here is your Open Thread for today's playoff games.

Cowboys vs. Vikings (1 p.m. ET) -- Remember Miss Manners (I mean CJ's) rooting etiquette for this one. Hate Brett Favre all you want. Under no circumstances, however, can you root for the Dallas Cowboys. Can't do it and call yourrself a Giants fan.

Jets vs. Chargers (4:40 p.m. ET) -- My own rooting etiquette for this one is that you cannot root for the New York Jets. A Philip River-Peyton Manning shootout in the AFC Championship Game would be kinda fun, wouldn't it?

How Bout Dem Cowboys!

I can be the first to tell you that I BLEED Giants blue but I can’t seem to shake the comparison of the 2007 Giants to the 2009 Cowboys. If you look at how hot they got at the end of the season, the way they are running the ball and how impressive the defense is playing. Today is going to be a big test for the Cowboys but I think they neutralize Adrian Peterson and the running game and get enough pressure on Brett Farve which will cause him to throw INT’s. The Cowboys win this game today 28-17 and beat Saints at their place, but lose to Manning and the Colts in SB 31-21 just my opinion, oh! Manning SB XLIV MVP.

Agree

Hate to say it but yea Dallas has that look the Giants had in 07 . . . struggled a bit early but came together and became a complete team at the right time. With that said, lets go VIkes!

by Landeta on Jan 17, 2010 12:51 PM EST up reply actions

No besmirching the Giants

by comparing them to the Cowboys in any way, shape, form, or fashion.

Cowboys can’t even hold onto the ball in this game, something that the Super Bowl Giants did throughout the playoffs into the Super Bowl. And the Giants did it with everyone, and I mean everyone, against them.

We didn't even have a chance for the "perfect season", but we did have the perfect ending.

This is a very tough playoff season for Giants fans.

You got the Jets, Cowgirls, and the Vikings with Favre. I just hope none of them make it to the Super Bowl.

Vikes

Why are we suppose to hate Farve as Giants fans?? Yall have lost me on this, He gave Strahan the sack record, loved it too, then he through a pick in OT to get us to the superbowl where we did nothing but beat the best offense ever in the 18-0 Pats… Why the hate???

It’s annoying, but I have no problem with Favre. In fact, I fully believe if he wins the Superbowl he’ll retire on top.

Awful Awful day

My predictions. Cowboys 27-17. Favre throws 3 or 4 picks and plays awful.

Jets 24-21. Just to piss us Giant fans off. No other reason.

The way the season has gone why would champioship Sunday be enjoyable?

Hate that Dallas resembles us in 07…I don’t care for Favre…but maybe just maybe he will have flash backs to his prime yrs…I see Visante having a huge game today…

Stop comparing the 09 Cowboys to the 07 Giants

The only similarities are in the head coaches and the QB. People were bashing both Coughlin and Eli like they were bashing Wade and Romo. That’s it.

Let’s see Tony Romo win without his #2 RB Felix Jones and his #1 TE Jason Witten like Eli won w/o Ward and Shockey. The Cowboys have been the healthiest team in the NFL this season. The Giants, as I’ve already mentioned, were not the healthiest team in 2007. The Giants weren’t playing well heading into the playoffs. They were 1-2 with a bad loss to Washington while the Cowboys entered the playoffs on a 3-game winning streak with a win at previously 13-0 New Orleans. Nobody said that Giants were a hot team and were dangerous in 2007. I don’t think the Giants were favored in any of their playoff games. The Cowboys have had people on their bandwagon since beating Philly in Week 17. Many people are picking them to make the Super Bowl, if not win it all. The Giants were a Wild Card team and played all road games. The Cowboys won the division and got their first game at home. The 2007 Giants’ defense was 17th in points allowed per game. The 2009 Cowboys’ defense is 9th. Nobody ever called the Giants the most talented team in the NFL. I hear that being discussed about the Cowboys all the time.

by GhostDini on Jan 17, 2010 1:02 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

The giants were under dogs every time.

by FreeBradshaw on Jan 17, 2010 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

I make the comparison based on how complete both teams are durring the playoffs.

Once Eli started playing with consistancy that team had it all, the D, the running game, the skill players. Dallas seems just as well rounded this year and both teams needed playoff wins badley and were not highly regarded going into the year.

Your points are well taken about the injuries and media hype. The 07 Giants were just as talented as any other team in the league that year espcially once Eli started playing to his potential but the “experts” acted like they were a college team. Dallas wins two games and all of the sudden they go from average to the most talented team in the history of the NFL so yea from a hype stand point I see wear your comming from the Giants did not get overhyped until two years later after a SB win and a 12-4 season while Dallas gets it with one win. But take all of that crap away and you have two talented complete teams playing up to their potential so thats what I’m looking at and thats wear my comparison comes from.

by Landeta on Jan 17, 2010 1:16 PM EST up reply actions

yea...

but think about how they went into the playoffs….

The Giants beat Buffalo and lost to the 16-0 Patriots (but played well…).

The Cowboys have been playing as good as any team in the NFL going into the Playoffs.

They won the division. They are basically completely healthy.

How come China can't vote David Lee for All-Star?

by FreeBradshaw on Jan 17, 2010 1:24 PM EST up reply actions

I know

Like I said I’m not trying to make an exact comparison the Giants did not come on until the playoffs that year while Dallas did in mid December this year so yea there are differences but like I said earlier they were both teams with a lot of talent and were well rounded in all areas that were considered 3rd place teams going into the season that had a lot of pressure on them to win a playoff game. Both teams when they put it all together are really good and do a lot of the same things well. Rush the QB, stuff the run, run the ball, big plays to big play wideouts.

I know you can’t make exact comparisons no team will ever be the 07 G-men but l compare teams from different years based on how their style of play and the 07 G-Men and 09 Cowboys are similar. Just like the 90’s Bills remind me of the 2000’s Colts with the offesnsive styles.

by Landeta on Jan 17, 2010 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

fair enough...

I see your point.

Its just…I kinda take it like a kick in the balls to compare this Cowboy team to the Giants run.

The fact they were division winners and really, among all these “analysts” are the favorites in the NFC at this point (and really, deservedly so) makes the comparion not all that valid anyway.

The Giants were picked against by everyone (almost) in every game.

How come China can't vote David Lee for All-Star?

by FreeBradshaw on Jan 17, 2010 1:34 PM EST up reply actions

It's amazing though

the Cowboys play well in a couple of games and all of a sudden they are the most talented team ever.

The Giants or any other team for that matter in the league play well for a few games nobody talks about their talent. Thats what pissed me off in 07 man for man they were as good as anyone (especailly Dallas or GB) they justed needed Eli to put it together and they were elite yet nobody saw that the only difference in the 07 postseason and the regular season was Eli’s constant, mistake free, clutch play

by Landeta on Jan 17, 2010 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

Even Tampa?

I was like WTF, how in the hell did anyone think Tampa was going to beat us that year. That was the one game I was almost 100% confident in. Tampa lost like 4 straight and played decent D and no O and won a weak division I mean Dallas and GB ran away with the 1 and 2 seeds that year but outside of them the Giants were clearly the 3rd best team in the NFC going into the playoffs, I mean Wash, Seattle and TB I mean that was ridiculous.

Remember how Summeral and Madden always seemed to love every really good team and showed eaqual levels of excitement and dished out equal levels of praise for both teams. Not only that Summeral and Madden had very good knowledge of all teams not just one. Summeral and Madden loved the Giants, Niners, Bears, Skins in the 80’s all of them. Buck and Aikman root for Dallas, they know everything about the Cowboys but are not very knowledgeable at all of other teams other than the obvjous.

by GhostDini on Jan 17, 2010 3:05 PM EST reply actions

bad timing...

if the Giants are lucky…Perry Fewell is the next HC cuz the GIants play good and Coughlin goes out on top.

But I agree, if they had an opening, Frazier would be as good a choice as any.

Hope he gets the Bills job and turns it around (and beats the Jets and Patriots…)

A- "Well, at least we are doing the same thing to them! We will be ok!

Huh??

As Ed says, how can u be a Giant fan and rout for Dallas? They will never be a winner in the playoffs with Phillips as the coach!

Minn beats Dallas because of the Vikings D plus Favre…
Jets beat S.D. because Rivers thinks he is a young Favre and will throw key interceptions, turn it over (fumble)

Colts over Jets (How can you bet against a.Manning, especially Peyton)
Minn. over N.O in a mild upset (The NFL is salivating for Favre vs. Manning)

The Rooney Rule

works IMO at least with the smart franchises who are better than racism.

by DoctorK16 on Jan 17, 2010 3:51 PM EST up reply actions

Its just..

I think a team like the Steelers would grab a coordinator like Tomlin anyway..regardless of the Rooney rule.

You see the interviews…you don’t see it panning out to actual HC’s being hired.

Frazier’s deserved a HC’ing job these past few years..yet, guys like Mangini, Shanahan even Brad Childress, Jim Zorn….

You do have a point on the smart franchises.

I’d love to see Fewell become the next HC of the Giants when Cough hangs up the headset.

How come China can't vote David Lee for All-Star?

by FreeBradshaw on Jan 17, 2010 3:55 PM EST up reply actions

Raheem Morris

got a shot probably because of the Rooney Rule for example. I think a lot of owners hire coaches for non-football reasons, ie. to be a PR/marketing leader of the organization($$$) and as a result feel that a black coach doesn’t work and that role. Smart teams are hiring for football reasons, it’s how you get Jerry Reese as GM and a Tomlin gets hired. I think the situation is better than once was and I think it will continue to improve because the benefits of having a black coach in a league that is 70% black become obvious.

by DoctorK16 on Jan 17, 2010 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

Yea the Rooney rule

is not only good for social reasons (racism and what not)

but also it allows good young coaches who would get looked over becasue they lack expierence to get interviewed. Tomlin is a great example of that. Pittsburgh was dead set on hiring Wisenhunt (which probabbly would have been a good hire anyways) but Tomlin who was not as expierenced as Frazier or even Wisenhunt for that matter was so dam impressive on the interview the Steelers felt like they had to hire him. And it worked out.

Rex Ryan got passed over a lot even for the Ravens job with Harbaugh so hopefully Frazier gets his opp. Seattle probabbly should of waited to hire him and Buffalo should really consider it. He’s a very good young coach.

Lets hope Feweel has the same success Spags has but yea he seems like if he does well he can be the next HC unless he does so well he gets plucked away next year.

by Landeta on Jan 17, 2010 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

I'll also add

that the good franchises are where the coaches want to end up. Do you really want to work for Snyder if your Leslie Fraser? It’s not worse thing in the world if you get passed over and get hired by some place functional down the road.

by DoctorK16 on Jan 17, 2010 4:10 PM EST up reply actions

So, does Jerry can Captain Cupcake ? I put it at 75% chance he does. He had much higher expectations going into post-season.

Boys have not shown any resiliency when faced with adversity since loss to G-Men. Got up early on Saints, and the Eagles were really a bad team at season’s end. Boys played well early today, but when faced with adversity, they folded.

Jerry might be tempted to promote Garrett for a year to see what he can do, and then can him if a big name is available.

Also, Jerry will sell Roy Williams to the Air Force as “stealth” technology. The man is “in-vis-i-ble” …

Constant talking after every play…whether its a first down or a 3 yard gain.

Also..remember Bradie James’ hit on Farve during that false start? Farve probably had it in his mind then that they’ll score a TD at every opportunity.

Class is Class…but if the opponent isn’t class and doesn’t deserve it…F em. Stop it if you can. Cuz if they’re gonna talk and do dirty stuff like that, they don’t deserved the brakes to be put on.

by jamoca5 on Jan 17, 2010 4:29 PM EST reply actions

Well..I needn't say much here other than our NFC East obviously stinks..

I don’t think Favre ran the score up he simply did what a QB does he threw the ball and the receiver caught it..Now we get to watch the Jets..I’m not going to disparage the Cowboys..The prize is going elsewhere this year…Hopefully one thing Favre did was prove he is the best there is..I didn’t like Brookings jawing at the Viking sidelines but he was met quite readily by a guy named Jared Allen..Oooops!..Mismatch.

a fine player who’s gotten better each year I’m just imitating Benigo and Roberts a bit

But yea I wish Ross (who started just as well) had risen to that level. But hopefully he comes back with a big 2010

To be honest with you without Revis that Jet D is probabbly ranked around 12th not one. They don’t have really any studs in the front seven, Jenkins when Healthy, a lot of good players but no dominate guys, they pressure with safteys and what not and Revis makes that possible.

He’s a solid LB that talks a big game.

by wangstu13 on Jan 17, 2010 5:40 PM EST up reply actions

I agree he's good

not great, not a game changer like Revis. David Harris makes as many plays as does Jim Leondard from his saftey position. He just runs his mouth so people think he’s some great player. He’s not. Sure I’d take he’s way better than any LB the G-Men have but’s not a great player. Good maybe even really good at times sure but not great.

He then tell him he felt he gave him 100 percent and vice versa, which the coach will agreed with. Then Jerra will draw an arch over both names and wrote “Dallas Cowboys”. “Unfortunately… See More we have this bigger thing up here,” Jones will say. “Unfortunately I’ve got to make the decision for what’s right for something a lot bigger than you, a lot bigger than me, and a lot bigger than our relationship. I'm glad I'm not one of those Jet-hating Giant fans.

I’m happy to see the Philip Rivers slobber-fest stopped in its tracks, and I’m sure it’ll be a great story line this week as the rematch with Indy comes up.

Also, I couldn’t be happier for the Cowboys to be violated in every possible way, though, there is a side of me that feels the last TD does not reflect well on the Vikings, on Favre, or their coach, so screw them too.

I think the Saints/Colts super bowl might be kinda fun. I’ll be rooting for Peyton, in the hopes it inspires Eli again like it did last time.

I wish I was you bro

It’s just that when I was a kid growing up in the 80’s and the Giants were good and the Jets sucked the few Jet fans I knew always would be in my face telling me the Giants suck . I mean in my face nasty stuff and I was like 10 or 11. Even now the few Jet fans I know are rubbing it in my face and as vocal as I am on these boards with my anti-Jet sentimet I’m not like that at all when I speak to Jet fans so I have no idea why they feel like they have to act like this towards Giants fans in general.

Also as a kid living in the NY area I was always stuck with the stupid awful Jet game instead of the national double header. There was nothing worse than watching a great Giant Redskin game then being forced to watch Jets vs Cheifs at 4:00 instead of Niners Bears. So that bugs me about them. Also the past two years I took the Jets in my knockout pool, Oakland in 08 and Bills in 09 and they lost both times. I mean come on. I root for them once a year and they lose to some terrible teams.

I’m a Yankee fan and I root for the Mets, maybe it’s cause they have their own stadium and a strong loyal fan base or cause the beat the sox in 86. . . I wish I felt the same way about the Jets. I just don’t they bug me. especailly their fans.

by Landeta on Jan 17, 2010 8:04 PM EST up reply actions

the Jets

could have drove the field and ate up that 2 minutes and they never see the ball again. I’m not killing Norv for that it’s a borderline call with that much time.

by DoctorK16 on Jan 17, 2010 8:10 PM EST up reply actions

No way the Jets get for it deep in there territroy

they would of put the Chargers in FG range already if they don’t make it and give the SD a short field to win the game like the Pats did vs the Colts earlier in the year.

I agree it’s boarderline in that they needed the ball back but the chances of getting an onsides kick is slim. The onsides changes the Jets perspective and allows them to be agressive when they have the ball. I think was a bit of a panic call.
