Sunday Playoff Open Thread
Here is your Open Thread for today's playoff games.
Cowboys vs. Vikings (1 p.m. ET) -- Remember Miss Manners (I mean CJ's) rooting etiquette for this one. Hate Brett Favre all you want. Under no circumstances, however, can you root for the Dallas Cowboys. Can't do it and call yourrself a Giants fan.
Jets vs. Chargers (4:40 p.m. ET) -- My own rooting etiquette for this one is that you cannot root for the New York Jets. A Philip River-Peyton Manning shootout in the AFC Championship Game would be kinda fun, wouldn't it?

How Bout Dem Cowboys!
I can be the first to tell you that I BLEED Giants blue but I can’t seem to shake the comparison of the 2007 Giants to the 2009 Cowboys. If you look at how hot they got at the end of the season, the way they are running the ball and how impressive the defense is playing. Today is going to be a big test for the Cowboys but I think they neutralize Adrian Peterson and the running game and get enough pressure on Brett Farve which will cause him to throw INT’s. The Cowboys win this game today 28-17 and beat Saints at their place, but lose to Manning and the Colts in SB 31-21 just my opinion, oh! Manning SB XLIV MVP.
Agree
Hate to say it but yea Dallas has that look the Giants had in 07 . . . struggled a bit early but came together and became a complete team at the right time. With that said, lets go VIkes!
No besmirching the Giants
by comparing them to the Cowboys in any way, shape, form, or fashion.
Cowboys can’t even hold onto the ball in this game, something that the Super Bowl Giants did throughout the playoffs into the Super Bowl. And the Giants did it with everyone, and I mean everyone, against them.
We didn't even have a chance for the "perfect season", but we did have the perfect ending.
Thank god...
You have no idea what your typing about… lol HOW BOUT DEM COWGIRLS!

This is a very tough playoff season for Giants fans.
You got the Jets, Cowgirls, and the Vikings with Favre. I just hope none of them make it to the Super Bowl.
Vikes
Why are we suppose to hate Farve as Giants fans?? Yall have lost me on this, He gave Strahan the sack record, loved it too, then he through a pick in OT to get us to the superbowl where we did nothing but beat the best offense ever in the 18-0 Pats… Why the hate???
All's Well that Fewell
Some people don't like Favre
for his his flip flopping.
It’s annoying, but I have no problem with Favre. In fact, I fully believe if he wins the Superbowl he’ll retire on top.

Awful Awful day
My predictions. Cowboys 27-17. Favre throws 3 or 4 picks and plays awful.
Jets 24-21. Just to piss us Giant fans off. No other reason.
The way the season has gone why would champioship Sunday be enjoyable?
hate it
Hate that Dallas resembles us in 07…I don’t care for Favre…but maybe just maybe he will have flash backs to his prime yrs…I see Visante having a huge game today…
I don’t wanna root for the jets, but the way I see it , if I don’t get the hot chick.my roomate might as well….
i dunno maybe I just like the colors

Stop comparing the 09 Cowboys to the 07 Giants
The only similarities are in the head coaches and the QB. People were bashing both Coughlin and Eli like they were bashing Wade and Romo. That’s it.
Let’s see Tony Romo win without his #2 RB Felix Jones and his #1 TE Jason Witten like Eli won w/o Ward and Shockey. The Cowboys have been the healthiest team in the NFL this season. The Giants, as I’ve already mentioned, were not the healthiest team in 2007. The Giants weren’t playing well heading into the playoffs. They were 1-2 with a bad loss to Washington while the Cowboys entered the playoffs on a 3-game winning streak with a win at previously 13-0 New Orleans. Nobody said that Giants were a hot team and were dangerous in 2007. I don’t think the Giants were favored in any of their playoff games. The Cowboys have had people on their bandwagon since beating Philly in Week 17. Many people are picking them to make the Super Bowl, if not win it all. The Giants were a Wild Card team and played all road games. The Cowboys won the division and got their first game at home. The 2007 Giants’ defense was 17th in points allowed per game. The 2009 Cowboys’ defense is 9th. Nobody ever called the Giants the most talented team in the NFL. I hear that being discussed about the Cowboys all the time.

I make the comparison based on how complete both teams are durring the playoffs.
Once Eli started playing with consistancy that team had it all, the D, the running game, the skill players. Dallas seems just as well rounded this year and both teams needed playoff wins badley and were not highly regarded going into the year.
Your points are well taken about the injuries and media hype. The 07 Giants were just as talented as any other team in the league that year espcially once Eli started playing to his potential but the “experts” acted like they were a college team. Dallas wins two games and all of the sudden they go from average to the most talented team in the history of the NFL so yea from a hype stand point I see wear your comming from the Giants did not get overhyped until two years later after a SB win and a 12-4 season while Dallas gets it with one win. But take all of that crap away and you have two talented complete teams playing up to their potential so thats what I’m looking at and thats wear my comparison comes from.
yea...
but think about how they went into the playoffs….
The Giants beat Buffalo and lost to the 16-0 Patriots (but played well…).
The Cowboys have been playing as good as any team in the NFL going into the Playoffs.
They won the division. They are basically completely healthy.

I know
Like I said I’m not trying to make an exact comparison the Giants did not come on until the playoffs that year while Dallas did in mid December this year so yea there are differences but like I said earlier they were both teams with a lot of talent and were well rounded in all areas that were considered 3rd place teams going into the season that had a lot of pressure on them to win a playoff game. Both teams when they put it all together are really good and do a lot of the same things well. Rush the QB, stuff the run, run the ball, big plays to big play wideouts.
I know you can’t make exact comparisons no team will ever be the 07 G-men but l compare teams from different years based on how their style of play and the 07 G-Men and 09 Cowboys are similar. Just like the 90’s Bills remind me of the 2000’s Colts with the offesnsive styles.
fair enough...
I see your point.
Its just…I kinda take it like a kick in the balls to compare this Cowboy team to the Giants run.
The fact they were division winners and really, among all these “analysts” are the favorites in the NFC at this point (and really, deservedly so) makes the comparion not all that valid anyway.
The Giants were picked against by everyone (almost) in every game.

It's amazing though
the Cowboys play well in a couple of games and all of a sudden they are the most talented team ever.
The Giants or any other team for that matter in the league play well for a few games nobody talks about their talent. Thats what pissed me off in 07 man for man they were as good as anyone (especailly Dallas or GB) they justed needed Eli to put it together and they were elite yet nobody saw that the only difference in the 07 postseason and the regular season was Eli’s constant, mistake free, clutch play
Every game
We were picked against

Even Tampa?
I was like WTF, how in the hell did anyone think Tampa was going to beat us that year. That was the one game I was almost 100% confident in. Tampa lost like 4 straight and played decent D and no O and won a weak division I mean Dallas and GB ran away with the 1 and 2 seeds that year but outside of them the Giants were clearly the 3rd best team in the NFC going into the playoffs, I mean Wash, Seattle and TB I mean that was ridiculous.
I remember
on yahoo at least, all 3 or 4 analysts picked against us on every game.

These guys are Cowboys fans, I have never seen anything like it how excited they get to do Cowboys games.
It’s terrible they are the worst.
Remember how Summeral and Madden always seemed to love every really good team and showed eaqual levels of excitement and dished out equal levels of praise for both teams. Not only that Summeral and Madden had very good knowledge of all teams not just one. Summeral and Madden loved the Giants, Niners, Bears, Skins in the 80’s all of them. Buck and Aikman root for Dallas, they know everything about the Cowboys but are not very knowledgeable at all of other teams other than the obvjous.
isn't amazing that their Cowboy love even overtakes the Farve man crush?

That was lucky for the coverage guy
that the ball went out. He was inside the end zone and would have made a freebie touchback.
We should've played like that.
The Giants’ D-line should’ve played like the way the Vikings’ D-line is playing. We would be in the playoffs if they had.

He’s the guy I’ve been asking to become the next Giants head coach…. Now you see why.

Raheem Morris
got a shot probably because of the Rooney Rule for example. I think a lot of owners hire coaches for non-football reasons, ie. to be a PR/marketing leader of the organization($$$) and as a result feel that a black coach doesn’t work and that role. Smart teams are hiring for football reasons, it’s how you get Jerry Reese as GM and a Tomlin gets hired. I think the situation is better than once was and I think it will continue to improve because the benefits of having a black coach in a league that is 70% black become obvious.
Yea the Rooney rule
is not only good for social reasons (racism and what not)
but also it allows good young coaches who would get looked over becasue they lack expierence to get interviewed. Tomlin is a great example of that. Pittsburgh was dead set on hiring Wisenhunt (which probabbly would have been a good hire anyways) but Tomlin who was not as expierenced as Frazier or even Wisenhunt for that matter was so dam impressive on the interview the Steelers felt like they had to hire him. And it worked out.
Rex Ryan got passed over a lot even for the Ravens job with Harbaugh so hopefully Frazier gets his opp. Seattle probabbly should of waited to hire him and Buffalo should really consider it. He’s a very good young coach.
Lets hope Feweel has the same success Spags has but yea he seems like if he does well he can be the next HC unless he does so well he gets plucked away next year.
I'll also add
that the good franchises are where the coaches want to end up. Do you really want to work for Snyder if your Leslie Fraser? It’s not worse thing in the world if you get passed over and get hired by some place functional down the road.
Thats why Spags did not take
that job after 07, Synder, he thought the Rams were a better job, that talks to what kind of job it is to work with Synder.
0-3 agaist the girls in the playoffs
He has been playin along time

I hope they do fire Wade...
I doubt that a new coach is gonna have them playing so much better next season…I mean, they were really playing good this past month.
Jerruh probably doesn’t realize that the playoffs are not a given…if he fires Wade he really takes away from how great those early 90 Poke teams were…cuz what they did is very rare as with the constant success.

They’re o-line is not great, there secondary is hit or miss. At times they struggle to run the ball. They got beat by a better football team.
Troy once again talking about things from a Dallas persepective
this is not about the Cowboys anymore Troy!
Seriously stop talking about how they got over the hump and won a playoff game . . . the national audience does not care we care about next weeks matchup and how well MInny and their D played, thats the story. Leslie Frasier outclassed Jason Garret in every way shape and form

Yeah the play-offs
game was over at that point. This is not the BCS (which is a brutally broken system, but that is a whole other ball of wax), you don’t need to be dicks to a team that is broken and beat already.
you don't know what was going on down there....
I mean…rewind much of the game and look what almost every Dallas player does after they make a play.
Not a TD…just a random play.
You get what you deserve.

Watching the Cowgirls lose today almost takes away the sting of no playoffs.
The Jets getting blown out would help take the rest away, I think.
;)
Favre and the Vikes have no class BUT
Jerry and the boys deserve it,
Ratliff, Roy Williams, Barber, Miles Austin acting like they won the SB after routine plays Jerry being a jerk Wade never giving the other team credit after losses . . . eff them!

Amen.
Anyone thinking the Cowgirls didn’t deserve even more piling on is just clueless.
One of the most classless teams of all time suddenly deserving another team showing them class?
Good to know that I am clueless then
but then again I am also a person who believes in respect, even if the ones you pay it to are not ones who do the same. Do unto others.
The Cowboys and certain other people do not fall into that category.
I’m a really nice person, yet I could never see giving the Cowboys an ounce of respect. They don’t show it nor do they deserve it.

So kick a field FG
which is what all teams would do in that down and distance in a real game situation. They’re going for a TD because they know the game is over and there’s no hope
Mount, we may as well give it up
we are apparently the only two in here that are not turning into the regular NFL fan that permeates the world today. Sad to see that even BBV is not immune to that mindset.
It's sadder to see people like you defending the Cowboys.

After all, Garrett is the supposed to be the ‘Coach in Waiting’ and yet he was on the sidelines today… as OC.. and did not just get beat… but blown out..
I'd love to see Garrett quickly bolt to Buffalo or Oakland before they fire Wade.
would be great to see them with absolutely no stability and completely retool the coaching staff.

Joe and Buck seem to call every Dallas Cowboys game.
It’s like they work on the Cowboys TV Network or something. Now that the Cowboys are out of the playoffs, I doubt Joe and Buck will know what to do with themselves next week.
I can now put the 2009 season behind me ...
I have “closure”.
So, does Jerry can Captain Cupcake ? I put it at 75% chance he does. He had much higher expectations going into post-season.
Boys have not shown any resiliency when faced with adversity since loss to G-Men. Got up early on Saints, and the Eagles were really a bad team at season’s end. Boys played well early today, but when faced with adversity, they folded.
Jerry might be tempted to promote Garrett for a year to see what he can do, and then can him if a big name is available.
Also, Jerry will sell Roy Williams to the Air Force as “stealth” technology. The man is “in-vis-i-ble” …

Constant talking after every play…whether its a first down or a 3 yard gain.
Also..remember Bradie James’ hit on Farve during that false start? Farve probably had it in his mind then that they’ll score a TD at every opportunity.

To move onto a different topic...
… did anyone else see Brett Favre singing “Pants on the Ground”?
Well..I needn't say much here other than our NFC East obviously stinks..
I don’t think Favre ran the score up he simply did what a QB does he threw the ball and the receiver caught it..Now we get to watch the Jets..I’m not going to disparage the Cowboys..The prize is going elsewhere this year…Hopefully one thing Favre did was prove he is the best there is..I didn’t like Brookings jawing at the Viking sidelines but he was met quite readily by a guy named Jared Allen..Oooops!..Mismatch.
any division
that sends 2 and almost a 3rd to playoffs doesn’t stink. We just don’t have the top team in the league. We do have the most depth though.

a fine player who’s gotten better each year I’m just imitating Benigo and Roberts a bit
But yea I wish Ross (who started just as well) had risen to that level. But hopefully he comes back with a big 2010
To be honest with you without Revis that Jet D is probabbly ranked around 12th not one. They don’t have really any studs in the front seven, Jenkins when Healthy, a lot of good players but no dominate guys, they pressure with safteys and what not and Revis makes that possible.
Studs
Bart Scott is a stud and wayyy better then all three of our LBs put together… woulda loved this guy too
All's Well that Fewell

He talks like a stud
He’s not a studd. Ray Lewis and Terrel SUggs are studs thats why Balt resigned them.
USC has better LB’s than the Giants.
He’s a solid LB that talks a big game.
I agree he's good
not great, not a game changer like Revis. David Harris makes as many plays as does Jim Leondard from his saftey position. He just runs his mouth so people think he’s some great player. He’s not. Sure I’d take he’s way better than any LB the G-Men have but’s not a great player. Good maybe even really good at times sure but not great.
Yeah when you watch the teams in the playoffs
you can appreciate what a group of at least decent linebackers can do
I think we might actually have the worst group in the entire league.

Me too
He had such a great rookie year in 07 he was an instant upgrade for our defensive secondary. Covered well, tackled, play with guts in the playoffs with a shoulder injury, big play poetential. If he’s healthly I think Perry Fewell will make a player out of him.
His body betrayed him
and I have a feeling he may have dealing with something away from football we don’t know about, because rumors were that he was suffering from depression too.
I remember hearing him
saying durring the 08 season he lost his “love” for the game and was not having fun anymore. I never heard the word depression mentioned but it could fit.
Lets hop he gets rights for 2010 like you said both physically and mentaly.
This was a terrible terrible first quarter in this Charger game
Jets are going to win, Chargers are letting oppurtniteis slip through their fingers. I can hear the Jets fan now comparing the AFC championship game to SB 3 with Colts vs Jets. . . . AWFUL. . . . come on SD beat these chumps.

Simms and Nantz are a lot better
than Buck and Aikman and Michaels and Collingsworth for that matter.
Simms does not root for anyone, Nance does not think he’s hosting a talk show. I actually like Gumble and Dierdorff. Big Dan talks about other positions other than the QB which is refreashing.
All this talk about running the score up is ridiculous
Play the game. Do you take a knee when your up 30 points in the middle of the 3rd quarter? No you play every snap lights out. And if the other team doesn’t match your intensity well tough love. These are grown men.
can we be a little less over protective of the qb please?

No point complaining. The NFL wants to keep the QB upright because they’re expensive and rare.

New strategy for Giants draft picks ...
after this weekend, I’d draft anyone named “Rice”. Apparently, you can’t miss with a prospect that has that name. Jerry, Simeon, Ray, Sidney …
Nah, she's a "cover" corner ...
not good for our new “Tampa 2” (please let that not come to pass …)
Jerra is going to meet with spongebobs friend Patrick tomorrow and he will use a table cloth and a black pen. draw a line and write both men’s names on each side. He then tell him he felt he gave him 100 percent and vice versa, which the coach will agreed with. Then Jerra will draw an arch over both names and wrote “Dallas Cowboys”. “Unfortunately… See More we have this bigger thing up here,” Jones will say. “Unfortunately I’ve got to make the decision for what’s right for something a lot bigger than you, a lot bigger than me, and a lot bigger than our relationship. It’s time for us to part ways business wise.”
Coaching?
I am starting to believe our special team coach is ruining our kickers

dude Jet fans are awful . . .. so are the Benigo media types that are always talkin this team up
Jets big underdogs vs the Colts in the AFC CHamp game . . . SB 3 Comparisons all freaking wekk are you kidding me do know how awful this will be.
This will be terrible. Trash talking Rex Ryan, a QB that has never payed his dues there is nothing to like about this.
I’d take the Pats over the Jets any day of the week
To me
Rex Ryan is
IF this was Herm Edwards and CHad Pennington I’d be ok with it.
NOt a cocky flashy QB who’s never earned anything and the son of Buddy Ryan.
Bill B came from the G-Men, he does not bother me, he’s a jerk but he helped this franchise win two SB’s.
Bart Scott is not the easiest guy to root for too. Cocky and trash talking. I’m sorry the Jets and there fanbase are unbearable to me
We're talking about a guy
that was caught spying on his opponents and traded key members of his team to avoiding paying before the season and who refuses to shake opposing coaches hands after games. He’s a jerk.
Dude a lot of teams do ruthless things
in the salary cap era in regards to trading and not signing guys, BB is not the first. I’d say the majority of teams trade guys cut guys and what not to stay under the cap and get young.
The Spy Gate thing was overblown, other teams do similar stuff BB’s rat boy assistant Mangini complained about it to make a statement.
The not shaking hands and press conferences are being a jerk I’ll give you that but I still don’t like coaches who talk trash like Rex . . . it’s obnoxious and makes it tough to root for. . .
Oh the dont
So the Jets telling Chad Pennington he’s going to compete for the starting QB position going into training camp in 08 with Kellen Celems then two weeks into training camp they dump him trade him to Miami so they could get Bret Favre, to help sell tickets and PSL, thats not ruthless and idiotic. Sorry Doc, the Jets are a tough organization to root for.
Meh
Belichick was great as our DC, but has become an A-hole on the Pats. I could care less what they do, as long as they don’t win another superbowl.
Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.
When there's a WILL there's a WAY
Belicheck was all away's an
A-hole. in fact why Handley was picked instead of him his George Young hated his guts.
No Handley was picked
becasue Parcelss waited till May to resigne Bellicheck took the Clevland job a week after SB 25 . . . Handley was the only guy left. . . BB and TC were gone. They settled for Handley
I've never liked Rivers
Give Eli Manning all those tall WRs and All-World TE Antonio Gates and Tomlinson in his prime and a stadium with no wind and a weather that’s always perfect and a division with sorry teams and a pass-first offense. I’m sure he could look really good too.

Then…they actually hate the Colts just as much up here, the Colts can beat the Jets.

I'm glad I'm not one of those Jet-hating Giant fans.
I’m happy to see the Philip Rivers slobber-fest stopped in its tracks, and I’m sure it’ll be a great story line this week as the rematch with Indy comes up.
Also, I couldn’t be happier for the Cowboys to be violated in every possible way, though, there is a side of me that feels the last TD does not reflect well on the Vikings, on Favre, or their coach, so screw them too.
I think the Saints/Colts super bowl might be kinda fun. I’ll be rooting for Peyton, in the hopes it inspires Eli again like it did last time.

I wish I was you bro
It’s just that when I was a kid growing up in the 80’s and the Giants were good and the Jets sucked the few Jet fans I knew always would be in my face telling me the Giants suck . I mean in my face nasty stuff and I was like 10 or 11. Even now the few Jet fans I know are rubbing it in my face and as vocal as I am on these boards with my anti-Jet sentimet I’m not like that at all when I speak to Jet fans so I have no idea why they feel like they have to act like this towards Giants fans in general.
Also as a kid living in the NY area I was always stuck with the stupid awful Jet game instead of the national double header. There was nothing worse than watching a great Giant Redskin game then being forced to watch Jets vs Cheifs at 4:00 instead of Niners Bears. So that bugs me about them. Also the past two years I took the Jets in my knockout pool, Oakland in 08 and Bills in 09 and they lost both times. I mean come on. I root for them once a year and they lose to some terrible teams.
I’m a Yankee fan and I root for the Mets, maybe it’s cause they have their own stadium and a strong loyal fan base or cause the beat the sox in 86. . . I wish I felt the same way about the Jets. I just don’t they bug me. especailly their fans.
Amen
I’ll root for Peyton to win it all. The last thing anyone needs is to be bombarded with “Who Dat!” for an entire off-season.
That might be the stupidest penality in the history of football

They lost 5 seconds calling
the TO after the 2 minute warning. They call it before, third down is run at 2:00, now it’s 1:55.
The effect of the onside kick
is to give Rex a good excuse to go for this 1st down.

How come China can't vote David Lee for All-Star?
by FreeBradshaw on Jan 17, 2010 7:59 PM EST up reply actions
Eh
I don’t know if Norv would be a good fit because you’ll have to change the offense a lot to suit what he does. He could get fired though. AJ Smith is weird like that.
If he just kicked off instead of onsides it
no way the Jets go for it on fourth down and SD gets one more shot . . .
Norv made a terrible decision . . . .he’ll might get fired.
the Jets
could have drove the field and ate up that 2 minutes and they never see the ball again. I’m not killing Norv for that it’s a borderline call with that much time.
No way the Jets get for it deep in there territroy
they would of put the Chargers in FG range already if they don’t make it and give the SD a short field to win the game like the Pats did vs the Colts earlier in the year.
I agree it’s boarderline in that they needed the ball back but the chances of getting an onsides kick is slim. The onsides changes the Jets perspective and allows them to be agressive when they have the ball. I think was a bit of a panic call.
actually...
all they’d have to do is draft CJ Spiller to be their Tomlinson :)
Boss would be relevant. Barden could become Vincent Jackson
….I’ve gone too far already…!!!!

Yea right
It was’nt that long ago the G-Men did play championship D
When SD was blowing scoring opps early I had a bad feeling about this game. It came back to bite the CHargers in the arse. . . they played a sloppy game the Jets, outside of that Sanchez pick played a good clean game. The last time the Jets got this far I was in college out in PA so I did not have to deal with the the Jet fans . . . .so this week will be rough.
Jets
It’s seems the Jets watched a lot of the game against Giants where the Giants controlled them for most of the game.
All in all ... a good day.
Cowboys crushed.
Rivers still can’t win (or even get to) the big one.

Romo was under seige today ...
but came up very small once he had some adversity. Gotta like the fact that both the Boys and Eagles seem to have some serious OL problems for next year. Ours might not be that bad.
I'm sorry Norv and Wade are just losers
they are fine coordinators but my god their teams come up small and can never handle prosperity. What was the trendy SB pick going into this weekend. SD vs Dallas . . . my god they just choke.

Well done Viks for stuffing Romo, but no way do they beat the Saints next week. Well done to the Jets, their D may just upset the Colts who had zero running game yesterday. I think Saints/Jets SB at this point.

He was like a god walking amongst mere mortals. He had a voice that could make a wolverine purr and suits so fine they made Sinatra look like a hobo.
Don't put anything past the Jets..
They blanketed the Chargers, so it will be Peyton against a defense that doesn’t leave many players open..and as for Favre, he could care less about playing the Saints in their dome…He just continues to teach kids how to play a man’s game.
