Carlos Dunlap?

I don't think we need another DE. You probably don't think we need another DE. But if we stop and think about it - we didn't do squat off the edge last season. I'm much MUCH more concerned with the middle of the defense...but my name's not Jerry Reese. And neither is yours. And Jerry Reese seems to think you can never have too many DEs. I tell you this - Dunlap. Is. A. Beast. He does one thing: Sack quarterbacks. But I'd still be annoyed if we picked him in the first. Not "shoot the TV" -annoyed, but annoyed. What about you?

Since I still trust JR...

if he selects Dunlap if he’s there…I’d trust that he knows what he’s doing.

6"6 290lbs behemoths that run 4.7’s and bench 225 about 95 times don’t grow on trees.

I think the Giants could use a DE…Well..Dunlap is bigger then Tuck and basically as big as Canty…so really, isn’t he really a DT?

Interesting name. I’ve always assiociated him with Undead Al and the Raiders and overrated…but I’ve reald more then a few scouting reports that say he’s more Mario Williams then Calais Campbell.

Right now…I’d say pass.

But…if JR grabs him…if he sees he’s BPA, its hard to argue.

Its really gonna be interesting cuz JR hasn’t had to pick at this area of the draft, usually its 10 picks later.

Dunlap has all the physical talent in the world…its gonna come down to the interviews.

How come China can't vote David Lee for All-Star?

that is the problem with canty

if u have ever seen him the guy is 6" 6" and 300 pounds and not big or fat he is just tall and really pretty skinny i first noticed this at the cowboy game when i had field passes and got to talk to him for a moment so that is why he has not worked out well at DT he doesnt take up much room he is just a taller DE lineing up at DT

I dunno about that...

I’m chalking up this year to injury for him. He was as good as Igor Olshansky at occupying blockers for Dallas, and Igor is bigger then him.

We’ll see how he does if he’s less injured this year

Dunlap is more like Julius Peppers I think. He is a strong big physical freak but is still strictly a DE

by mclaren_is_the_best on Jan 17, 2010 12:44 PM EST up reply actions

what about Tuck?

We’re talking about the Giants, the team that liked to get 4 elite pass rushers on the field at the same time.

Dunlap is Strahan pre-knee injury size, 6"6 290lbs. Tuck and Dunlap in the middle, Osi and Kiwi on the outside.

Like I said below…if its the 2nd round (slim chance..but a chance), I think he’s the pick.

Most ends can't play in the middle though

look at Kiwanuka this year – he couldn’t do anything in the middle. We’re better off taking a 1- gap DT than another DE

by mclaren_is_the_best on Jan 18, 2010 12:58 PM EST up reply actions

Why compare him to Kiwi?

Dunlap is bigger then Justin Tuck.

Osi and Kiwi, IMO, given how they performed last year should be situation pass rushers anyway, of course they could perform their way back into the lineup.

Tuck was excellent as a situational DT, probably the main reason that 2008 Defense was so good.

Yes..most ends can’t play the middle exclusively…that’s why that has nothing to do with what I’m talking about.

Imagine Dunlap playing his way into a starter….

Tuck, Cofield, Canty, Dunlap as the starting front 4, with Kiwi and Osi rotating in when needed.

Then, when they need to pin their ears back….Kiwi, Tuck, Dunlap Osi…

I want my 4 Horsemen DL back.

by FreeBradshaw on Jan 18, 2010 1:06 PM EST up reply actions

Yes I'm talking about in pass rushing situations

It took time for Tuck to learn how to play DT and if we take Dunlap it would be the same. Hes never lined up there before. You can’t just expect him to come in from playing DE and line up against G’s and C’s.

And theres too much blame on Umenyiora and Kiwi when its really the linebackers fault that we couldn’t stop the run. Boley is soft. Goff gets lost in between the guards most of the time. Danny Clark is still running after Stewart.

by mclaren_is_the_best on Jan 18, 2010 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

Tuck was a rookie in 2007.

They used him at DT to get him on the field.

Having Tuck on the squad…..also, a player with similar size in Chris Canty, would help ease him along.

We’re only talking for passing downs. We’re talking about getting the 4 best pass rushers on the field at the same time.

Osi and Kiwi deserve as much blame as the LB’s, cuz when either were in place for the tackle, all they did was run by the RB.

Tuck was drafted in 2005

yes!

He was!!!!

well, more to the point…

he sure as hell didn’t learn playing DT in 2005 and 2006, cuz he was barely on the field, he was injured.

by FreeBradshaw on Jan 18, 2010 4:55 PM EST up reply actions

He at least tried playing DT in training camps and practices in 2005 and 2006 while Dunlap probably hasn’t lined up at DT in his entire life.

by mclaren_is_the_best on Jan 18, 2010 6:48 PM EST up reply actions

I doubt Tuck did that at Notre Dame too...

he was probably strictly a DE there too.

I see what your saying….why the idea that a 6"6 290lbs guy can’t be a situation pass rusher, when a guy like Tuck who’s smaller and not as physically gifted all around…does it too…I don’t know

How come China can't vote David Lee for All-Star?

by FreeBradshaw on Jan 18, 2010 6:59 PM EST up reply actions

Yes but, Coughlin needs to win this year and another DE will not help at it…. I think we have too much money invested in that one position already. I just think that that pick could be invested in a position of need like LB / S or (your fav FB) RB

Also Julius Peppers is 6’7 283 but he doesn’t play DT. You need more than size to be a Justin Tuck

by mclaren_is_the_best on Jan 18, 2010 11:25 PM EST up reply actions

Why?

Money? Who cares about money?

Its about improving the team.

The Giants had Mike Strahan on the team…didn’t stop em from going 4DE’s on the field did it (Tollefson)

If Dunlap..really is similar to Peppers and the Giants manage to get this guy….

On passing downs..or on any down just to change stuf up…

I have no idea how Osi, Tuck, Dunlap, Kiwi…is a bad idea.

Its all about getting to the QB.

Win now? Hell yea, that’s win now. As win now as a LB or S could be.

…and what does Peppers have to do with this? You can be 100% sure that if Peppers was on the Giants, he’d be playing DT with Tuck while Osi and Kiwi are on the outside.

Peppers only plays DE cuz he plays for the Panthers. They don’t do what the Giants did.

How come China can't vote David Lee for All-Star?

by FreeBradshaw on Jan 19, 2010 1:00 AM EST up reply actions

Money matters if there is a cap for 2011 or for whenever

When the Giants tried 4 DE’s this year it was an easy TD for the other team every single time

It’s not win now when you draft a guy to play a position hes never done before and expect him to do anything his first year

I mentioned Peppers because he has similar size to Dunlap

Tuck is virtually the only DE that moves to DT on passing downs. When there are 31 teams that don’t do what we’re doing it its obviously because its not as easy as plugging a guy in a different position

by mclaren_is_the_best on Jan 19, 2010 2:20 AM EST up reply actions

Dunlap...

if he gets drafted at the #15 or #47 spot by the Giants…is not going to kill them cap wise if it does come back.

Why you bring up money in this situation…I don’t know.

I don’t care about 31 other teams…the NY Giants won a SB where on passing downs, they put 3 to 4 DE’s on the field and the same time.

Dunlap reminds me of Strahan, if he reaches his potential.

….still don’t understand Peppers being mentioned…Peppers plays for the Panthers.

The NY Giants….probably the only team that did that where they use all DE’s on passing downs.

The Giants could NOT GET TO THE QB IN 2009!!!!

If JR thinks Dunlap’s the best guy to help them do that..whether in round 1 or 2, he’s a incredible pick for his potential.

I also don’t understand what your getting at with the different position….its passing down that he could be a DT.

Other wise…DE.

There are a lot of character concerns about him

he has all the talent in the world but there are reports that hes lazy and the like. I would be disappointed if we take him in the first because there are already a lot of DE’s on our team and theres not enough snaps for them already so adding another one is not favorable for us. IF hes there in the 2nd round though I think it would be a very very good pick

by mclaren_is_the_best on Jan 15, 2010 6:09 PM EST reply actions

can you say

Pacman Jones 2.0? This guy has a lot of red flags and almost no work ethic. We already got burned by Plax, we don’t want to deal with that again, especially with Osi now showing a little prima donna as well

Jerry Reese = Omar Minaya?

by BigBlueIntervention on Jan 16, 2010 12:19 AM EST up reply actions

really? Pac Man?

I dunno about that.

I don’t think its definite that he’s an utter fool like Pac Man…basically the only thing he’s done is pass out after being hammered at a red light.

One incident…

If JR finds that he’s not a knucklehead, and of course there’s real talent there…why not?

I've been hearing the same thing

Lazyness. Plus do we really want a guy who breaks curfiew, gets drunk, and falls asleep at an intersection with the car running on a MONDAY before the SEC championship game.

Not to mention, who was the last UF defensive football player to pan out?

Wow

I think The Freak was the last one to pan out.

No thanks

Dunlap is a physical freak. But if you watch games he disappears for long stretches. He is much better suited to be a 3-4 DE where he can eat up blockers. I’ve watched him enough to know that I don’t want him. I’m pretty sure JR won’t either

by ggggmen08 on Jan 16, 2010 9:14 PM EST reply actions

This is the only comment I agree with.

The laziness thing is BS. So is the character thing. But I do think he disappears at times. He reminds me of Alex Brown of the Bears. If you single-cover him, he’ll kill you. So you just double him. /shrug.

I left my swagger in my other pants.

by HughG16 on Jan 18, 2010 11:58 AM EST up reply actions

well,

on the Giants line, its not likely he’s getting double teamed, with Tuck there. A healthy Canty at his best should be taking up a blocker or 2.

I mean, he was said before the season to be a clone of Mario Williams, who just like Dunlap in college disappeared for long stretches during games too.

If this guy is sitting there in round 2, which is certainly possible, why not?

I mean….imagine a line of Osi and Kiwi on the outside, then Tuck and Dunlap on the inside (of course, on passing downs)

Could it also be, EXACTLY like NC State with Mario, that Dunlap disappeared because of all the other talent on the defense?

6"6 290lbs, 4.6, massive strength.

…I mean, I doubt he falls to them in the 2nd…but if he requires 2 blockers in the NFL, there’s not all that many blockers on the OL to take care of Tuck, Osi and Kiwi.

by FreeBradshaw on Jan 18, 2010 12:18 PM EST up reply actions

That is true.

But like you say, it’d be more of a “Look what we found!” -pick. MUCH stranger things have happened on draft day, though. I just keep seeing him sitting there at 15 on draft boards…not too high for some teams, but way too high for us. I want Ray Lewis 2.0 or Jack Lambert 2.0.

I left my swagger in my other pants.

by HughG16 on Jan 18, 2010 12:36 PM EST reply actions

At this point...

McClain is the only one that is that..and McClain at 15 is more of a pipe dream then Dunlap in the 2nd.

Also…Ray Lewis is not Ray Lewis without Goose and Sam Adams (the DT..).

Its just a in JR we trust type of thing. If JR, even at pick #15, really and truly feels that Dunlap’s character is not a problem, and that his physical talent can be used better in the NFL (see: Mario Williams for an example of how this can work out), then what’s wrong with it?

As of right now, yea, I’d be on the side of “stay away”.

If JR sees something there…why not?

I dunno about you….I’d rather have MICHAEL STRAHAN, part 2.

Cuz coming out of college, that’s what Dunlap is more like, given his athleticism and 6"6 290lbs frame.

How come China can't vote David Lee for All-Star?

by FreeBradshaw on Jan 18, 2010 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

also...

while I like safety in round 1, Fewell’s made a habit out of turned guys like Jairus Byrd and Nate Vasher into good DB’s, at least under his watch.

Given the talent that I belive’s on this team, if healthy of course, the 1st rounder needs to be a hit, a BPA pick.

I’ve said Spiller…I’ve even said Earl Thomas would be BPA.

What if Dunlap’s included in that? Why not?

How come China can't vote David Lee for All-Star?

by FreeBradshaw on Jan 18, 2010 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

You raised a couple good points there.

1. “Ray Lewis is not Ray Lewis without Goose and Sam Adams.”
Very true. Which makes me want a stud DL even more. He might make some of our current bunch better.

2. “I dunno about you….I’d rather have MICHAEL STRAHAN, part 2.”
Very interesting comment here. Young Strahan was a lot like Dunlap now: See Quarterback, Hit Quarterback. Did it all using speed and strength. But I actually liked Old Strahan better. One of the top five – maybe top three – technique players in NFL history. Every down was a clinic. If Fewell can turn him into that…I’d be pretty damn happy.

I left my swagger in my other pants.

by HughG16 on Jan 18, 2010 5:00 PM EST reply actions

thank God 4 Fewell's DB reputation

I don’t want to force a S when he can make something out of less. Don’t mind an RB in the top 3 picks either….but the run game can’t go W/O some OL upgrade….CAN’T ALWAYS DRAFT LIKE IT’S FOR NEXT YEAR,ONLY….CAN’T ONLY BASE IT ON LAST YEAR…JUST GO BPA AT DL,LB,OL in the first and don’t get stuck at one position….probably wait at rd.2-5 for safety
