Alford out for season
GIANTS' ALFORD TO HAVE SEASON-ENDING SURGERY (4:54 p.m. ET)
New York Giants backup defensive tackle Jay Alford will miss the season with a knee injury.
Coach Tom Coughlin said Friday that Alford was examined by doctors and they decided he needed surgery to repair two ligaments he tore in a preseason game against the Chicago Bears about two weeks ago.
Alford was having an excellent camp and would have likely gotten plenty of playing time behind starters Barry Cofield and Fred Robbins.
The injury also caused one other change. Alford was the snapper on extra points and field goals. Long snapper Zak DeOssie has taken over both jobs.

dammit...
I figured this would eventually be the result, but the fact they said they’d re-evaluate after a week or 2 that there might be the chance he’d overcome it…
But O well…
Alford is my boy. Somtimes guys that get these sort of injuries are never heard from again and I reallly REALLY hope that’s not the case, cuz Alford is a heat seeking MISSILE that could be a terror on pass rush downs.
Its a shame, but it might provide opportunity for a guy like Evans to make the team. That’s really not a good thing, cuz Alford was a real nice talent.

If he never plays another down
He’ll always be remembered for that devestating Super Bowl sack whe he pancaked Brady. Get well soon, Jay.

Jay will be back w/out question....
sadly, i knew this was coming and prepared myself. The truth of the matter is that I was not expecting big things at all from Jay this year. Obviously until camp rolled around and 1/2 our Dline was in the trainers room.
But I see Jay coming back next year. Robbins and Bernard are not young guys…who knows how long Robbins will even be here? I think his contract is up this year.
But it’s still sad /bc I see him cut from the same cloth as a Fred Robbins and Barry Cofield

if this was the worst
injury we had this pre-season, then i’m happy. alford played great in the first 2 games (before he got hurt). but to be honest, considering the large number of players we could’ve lost in the pre-season to injury who are more important than jay alford, i am more than willing to accept this injury.
yea, he would’ve made our d-line better, but imagine how much a shittier situation we would’ve been in if eli, bjax, boss, smith, anyone on the o-line, pierce, tuck, webster, phillips, or any other starter had been hurt. considering the nature of pre-season, i would venture to say i’m “happy” alford is injured.

idk
maybe its just me but as i recall last year alford was a force to be reckoned with on the dl. the only dudes i remember making bigger momentum changing plays on defense last year were tuck and mathias. he is a huge loss. but yea id take this over another year without osi
