Is Eli The Smartest QB In The League?
While watching Tony Romo Monday night I noticed something interesting. Romo recognized a blitz and checked out of the play, the defense then backed off but Romo didn't adjust the play based on the defense changing their coverage. This took my mind back to Bruce Johnson's interception last week. The Cowboys get to the line of scrimmage, 3 wide, one TE and 1RB. AP calls a check to what looked like a blitz with a safety about to rush off the edge. Romo checked to a hot route and AP checks to Cover 2 zone, the safety retreats along with AP and Boley into coverage. Romo notices but he doesn't check out of the play and throws the pick. I thought that was weird but then I saw Romo do it again on Monday, this time completing a pass to Witten who was double covered. I thought, maybe he runs out of time or perhaps Romo only gets one or two check plays based on what he reads at the line.
For much of his career Eli Manning has been ridiculed for his arm strength, his confidence, his leadership ability and his looks(as if that matters in football). It has taken him sometime to get to the point where he can control the game but I'm beginning to believe that Eli has become a master at reading defenses. QB's like Romo have better arms and better athletic ability than Eli but Eli earned the trust of his offensive coordinator to call whatever play or any adjustment he wants to call at the line. Romo doesn't seem to have that freedom or the trust of Jason Garrett. For all his athletic ability if you make Romo read and react you'd have a better chance to win the game. If you over pursue Romo with exotic blitzes he relies on athleticism, his strength, and he wins. For years it had been "make Eli throw" and you win but now Eli has studied his tail off and knows what he's seeing at all times. Stack the box, play coverage, doesn't matter Eli is going to assassinate you.
We really shouldn't be surprised, Eli scored 39 out of 50 on the wonderlic exam. Tom Brady scored 33 and his brother Peyton scored 28. It doesn't make you a better QB but it gives you an idea of the aptitude of the player. On Sunday during the game, Eli took his usual "I'm running out of time" timeout, he went over to Gilbride and motioned for him to get the play in faster. At that point I thought, maybe Eli doesn't even care what play is called, he just wants to get to the line as soon as possible to see what the defense gives him so he could adjust accordingly and beat them. An area of his game that was once maddening and heavily scrutinized is now a joy to watch and heralded. We all have watched the maturation of Eli Manning. His arm isn't stronger, his feet aren't faster and his muscles aren't any larger but he is smarter. Perhaps smarter than any QB in the league.

Nicely written
I was just thinking to myself how Eli has become a Field General. He has everybody doing exactly what he wants on any given snap. He’ll never be as prolific a passer as Peyton or Brees (due to his style of play as well as the giants being a run first team) but if you have the ball on your 20 with under 2 minutes to play and need a TD you know Eli will get it done.
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
+1
for awhile everytime he went back to throw i cringed… now i just watch and see what happens. ALso in the Dallas game after they scored and made it 31-30 my first reaction was how time does Eli have, when i saw 3 plus mins i was like we got this. I usually try not to think like that or heaven forbid actually say it out loud ( i am a superstitious fan) but it just came out of me. He has instilled that type of confidence in me.

I didn't like the headline...
But I shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover. Very well written Major. While I don’t believe Eli is the smartest QB in the league I surely don’t think he’s far from it and he is only going to continue to grow.
While he’s not the most physically gifted QB in the league he might understand the game better than anyone else . He grew up on football and knows how to play the game on and off the field, something you can’t put a value on these days. Overall, great assessment on him and the others you compared him to. Except you forgot to mention how cool Tony Romo is, which definitely counts for something. I mean, the guy wears a backwards baseball cap under his helmet when he plays for crying out loud.

Laugh out Loud…that’s good stuff.

I wear my hat backwards
While I sleep underwater.
The think I've noticed about Eli
is that every year I see improvement. Every year, he reminds me more and more of Peyton. I’ve always liked Eli and he is definitely becoming one of the league’s premier QBs.

LOL
I would have no problem including my 2nd favorite Manning.

I'd still say Peyton's the smartest QB
maybe Eli’s smarter than him in a real world sense, but there is nobody who is “football smarter” than Peyton Manning. Eli might be #2 though.

ELI
thank god ELI is final getting recognition..he has been improving every year and his stats show it..
Even though he does not produce Tony Ono Romo numbers..he doesn’t need to..cause he knows the offense and defense..you clearly saw that in the Dallas game and in the superbowl..
ELI is the most underrated QB and this is from a guy that had at least 7 4th quarter comebacks, superbowl run and reached the playoffs every year..
nobody likes to see ny teams do well
thts the truth. most of our teams have storied histories. except for the yankees most ny sports clubs r heavily disliked.
Did you just say except for the Yankees?
Although they do have the most fans in baseball, they are also far and away the most hated team.

seriously
they’re more hated than the Cowboys

yup.
Mets and Red Sox fans, like you 2 above, can vouch for that.
4 WS champs, 2 more WS appearances and loses, as well as multiple division championships and consecutive playoff appearances is gonna attract a ton of bandwagon fans.
And no one hates a bandwagoner more than die hard fans, which to be a Met fan and Red Sox fan all these years, you are that.
The Yanks still probably have the most bandwagoners, even if a lot have switched to Pissant Red Sox Nation or wherever else (Phillies?)
Of course there’s also the bandwagon hate too, as in everyone and their mother who’s not a Yankee fan hates them, cuz of the spending (and the annoying bandwagon fans…that seem to be coming back in droves now…..idiots.)
What the f$%k is the internet?
it's not even the fans I hate
it’s the Yankees players and their faces and the management!
You play to win the game!

ELI, "Toast" of the WORLD.
I think ELI is best when he is being knocked down, so I hope he does not get the recognition he deserves from the media. I hope recognition from fans that believe in him is good enough. I have the same feeling this season as I had in the last superbowl run. I believe the Giants have the best quarterback in the NFL because I believe ELI is the only quarterback smart enough to teach the rookies how to believe in themselves and play above thier previous highs. I don’t see this vital skill in other QBs. One thing I believe you can count on with this Star (ELI) is that he will only burn brighter as he learns more each game. As far as looks are conerned, ELI looks like a great football QB. His wife is the smartest one of all. If you want a Family Man QB, ELI is the toast of the WORLD!!!
Eli
Good point.Despite all the complaining,Eli has proven to be a winner. His demeanor is perfect for a qb,and while others can use their physical skills,we all know those fade with time. Experience on the other hand comes with honing ones skills.Look for even better things from Eli in gthe future.
Tom Tallmadge Sr
Also, as an aside
People often seem to knock Eli for not being the most elusive QB in the world. And while he’s certainly not, the fact is in the last year or so, he certainly has begun to make things happen by buying HIMSELF time. Sure, he has a great offensive line, but dating back to his Houdini heroics on the Manning-Tyree play in the Super Bowl, he’s had his fair share of escape-artist moments. This year, I’ve seen him move out of the pocket on a number of occasions…either avoiding the sack entirely and making a play out of it, or at least getting rid of the ball to avoid the loss. Maybe it’s just my personal self-fulfilling prophecy, but he’s been doing it with much greater regularity, and I don’t think I’m the only one who’s noticed. His being sacked only twice this year is not just the product of Seubert-O’Hara-Snee-McKenzie-and-Diehl.
