Giants 24, Buccaneers 0

Well, that was easy. The 24-0 victory by our New York Giants over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was about as one-sided a football game as you will ever see in the NFL.

The Giants (3-0) rolled up 397 yards of total offense. Tampa Bay (0-3)? Just 87. This was sort of like the varsity scrimmaging against the JV.

You know what you can take away from today's game? The Buccaneers are a pitiful NFL team, that's what.

I will have more later once the player quotes are released. Tomorrow, of course, I will have 'Kudos & Wet Willies.'

not to be all gloom and doom

and a win is a win, but there were still some problems that a win like this can hide. the pass rush still wasn’t there, they harassed leftwich all day but i don’t believe they brought him down for a sack at all.

bradshaw was a beast, but jacobs couldn’t get any holes past the first quarter. something to be concerned about in the upcoming weeks for sure.

how about gartrell though? he does not look at all like the slow, 4.5 runner that he was billed as. the kid is explosive and powerful.

A shutout

and you are complaining about the pass rush? Geez! They rushed four and played vanilla because that’s all they had to do. The Bucs didn’ threaten them at all, so they never had to dial it up.

by Ed Valentine on Sep 27, 2009 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, they still put a decent rush on

just no sacks, Leftwich was hit a lot as he threw and the rush forced some bad throws. Considering no Tuck and 4 man rush I thought they did a nice job. Only two things to complain about is Tynes missing chip shots and more injuries.

by Landeta on Sep 27, 2009 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions

just because it was a win

doesn’t mean they can’t take away things and improve on them. this a defense that is built to rush the passer and register sacks, they didn’t last week and the excuse was that tony is a slippery bastard. but then this week against a highly immobile QB no sacks. its not a complaint, but its a definite area of concern.

by cntrlalt on Sep 27, 2009 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

When Tuck is back and playing healthy and regularly

and they’re still not getting sacks, maybe I’ll worry.

With the personnel we have, it’s not a concern for me…the same way I wasn’t concerned when our rush offense didn’t show up for the first two games…and we all saw what they did today.

Either way, look at things like this: with no sacks today (albeit, the pressure was there, and partially caused the Terrell Thomas pick), the Giants defense was still able to shut down the Bucs in every way possible. Since the pass rush is our obvious strong-suit heading into the season, if it does come around (and it will), it’s just one more reason the defense should become completely dominant.

Yes

Our defense got alot of good rest this week..There was no need to press hard in this game.

but what a boring game. dont get me wrong, i love seeing the giants roll over opponents, but this was just unfair.

Well sorta

I know Tynes has his moments, but that missed chip shot? Then he comes back and makes it from an almost identical spot (before the kick, i’m holding my breath). That ball had some weird looking english on it!

good point

this may have been the msot relaxing game I’ve ever seen. Just a blip when Tynes missed that 8-inch field goal

Now we know why ...

the Cowboy fans were all so full of themselves after Week 1 (although based on what happened in Detroit today, I have to take our 3-0 start down a notch based on overall competition).

side note

what would the over/under be on a Browns/Bucs game if you gave each team eight quarters?

i’d say 13 1/2.

by SBakerTheTouchdownMaker on Sep 27, 2009 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Make that the over/under on offensive touchdowns...

and that number would need to drop considerably.

My heart need the break from the traditional last 2 minute tension and stress of a typical Giant game.

plain and simple it was a game we shouldve won and did. usually this would be a game we would stress over. we took it to them and it wasn’t even close.

New strategy to help this team

Lets start Josh Johnson and have clifton smith and derrick ward in the back field and run the option. They will be forced to respect the run. Then we can throw the ball. We might even be fun to watch. As far as the defense goes…tell Monte kiffin to comeback he’s not doing that great in tennesee anyway. Seems like this might work..but thats just me.

Jacobs is not the Jacobs of old

This has been talked about before but after watching the first three games this year…B. Jacobs is not running through defenders with reckless abandonment. I personally don’t think his game has changed but he is doing this to avoid injury. Personally I think he is selling himself short by running the ball the way he has all year so far. He is a north-south runner and I am sick of seeing him cut back and forth or running out to the side!

easy to talk

when it comes to another man’s knees.

by cntrlalt on Sep 27, 2009 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions

He's doing

what the team has asked him to do. They coached him to change his style so he can be there for the long haul.

If he wanted to he could bulldoze on every play and get 4 or 5 tough yards all the time. But he’d be missing games with injury like the last couple of years and he’d only be in this league 2 or 3 more years.

They’ve coached him to look for holes and run around guys and he has bought into it and I’m glad he has. I want him around in the 4th quarter of a January game so he can bulldoze for 3 tough yards on a tired defense when it’s necessary.

by Jaybat on Sep 27, 2009 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Well he got 92 yards..

So I am alot happier this week with Jacobs.

by Bobbiblue on Sep 28, 2009 3:05 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree...

that he doesn’t look the same but I am still a fan of B-Jake. Here are some reasons I feel he may have started these types of performances:

1. Teams EXPECT him to be a north-south runner and, therefore, he may be trying to throw them off.
2. He is protecting his longevity. We’ve heard a number of the players say “this season is a marathon, not a sprint.” I believe Brandon Jacobs is infinitely more important in week 15 and the playoffs than week 3 against a mediocre, at best, opponent.
3. Plays appear to be drawing him outside through coaching staff rather than him choosing to go outside.
4. He’s no longer playing for a contract nor competing against Ward to get one.

I don’t like to think B-Jake was playing for a contract last year but let’s face it; wouldn’t you up your performance if you knew that meant a difference in millions of dollars in pay?

Good win

I was at a bar with a few Eagles and Jets fans, so we had to compromise on a table and I didn’t have the greatest view of the game, but it seemed like every time I looked up the Giants had the ball again. Not bad for a defense missing two of its best players.

I swear, Lawrence Tynes is going to give me a heart attack, but until he misses a clutch field goal, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

As good as this win was, by far the highlight of my day was when the bar turned the downstairs tvs from the Redskins game to the Steelers game with about a minute left, and an exodus of Redskins fans came up to watch the game right near my table. When Ladell Betts went down at the end of the game, my friends and I just started laughing, and the Redskins fans didn’t even get angry, they just looked depressed.

Tynes

Is not very trustworthy…He’ll drive us nuts and we’ll all be bald if this keeps up!!..He pulls every kick to the left upright..If I keep leaning to the right while watching him I’ll have a bad back..He gets good snaps and holds, and then shanks the kick..It must be how he sets up or maybe his foot is crooked.

seriously...

and I don’t get it. The Redskins did not look BAD against the Giants, they just didn’t look as good. It appears, though, that the Redskins do just enough to not look completely embarrased by the opposing team every Sunday. It’s bizarre that a team that has as much talent as they do just do not seem to care about winning.

Off topic

but how’s this for NFL craziness:

The titans and steelers are 1-5, and only have a win because they faced each other. The broncos and bengals are 5-1, and only have a loss because they played each other.

then the Giants did what the good teams are supposed to do against the bad and the ugly. They dominated.

No I wouldn’t get a swelled head just from the W but I do because of the dominance. The only negative being they should have scored 44 instead of 24.

Not actually sure there were any I did see Kareem mckenzie get carted off but it was 100 plus degrees in Tampa not to mention some wicked humidity to boot. Hoping that a few guys weren’t hydrated and or got cramped, stay healthy Gmen

by wangstu13 on Sep 28, 2009 4:29 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

I hope that is the case

Certainly a game we needed where the defence was able to rest and heal.

Again, our talent level should be too much for the Chiefs next week so with luck a similar performance will give Canty, Tuck, Ross and Dockery a chance to heal and not be rushed back too quickly.

A win is a win,but

either the Giants are very confident or being nice to the opposition.
they don’t want to run away from any team, always want to keep it close.and give them
a chance to catch up.

by Olddiehard on Sep 28, 2009 5:24 AM EDT reply actions

they put in their 2nd and 3rd stringers...

that wasn’t a close game by any stretch of the imagination. The ‘Skins game was “closer” but wasn’t really close at all. Dallas is truly a good team but the Giants were still able to defeat them. I wouldn’t lose sleep over it.

They did what they were supposed to..

They beat a bad team..The running game came back..but this game is nothing to write home about,,Then again, I’ve seen them lose to teams like this in the past, by slacking off..So, that is a good thing..credit the coaching staff for not letting up..and the G-men are a class act..they’ll never run up the score on an opponent..Once they knew they had them they put guys in there to learn.

by Bobbiblue on Sep 28, 2009 5:46 AM EDT reply actions

That's right

Even though the game was pretty much over, don’t pull back on the reigns (on D) to allow the opposition to pick up garbage yards. Let them earn it. They weren’t earning the yards earlier, so why let them get them now?

Get the ball back and let your O finish up the clock!

Seriously, Tampa finally got their first, first fown in the third quarter! That’s unheard of!

by Hootman on Sep 28, 2009 7:27 AM EDT up reply actions

I have come to the conclusion

that us Giants fans are never happy.

Last week everyone was saying the defence could not stop anyone and we needed the offence to start scoring Red Zone TD’s or we will lose.

This week we get 3 Red Zone TD’s, the running game got on track, the defence holds a team 300+ yards below it’s game average and records a shutout and all we can say is that we did not get any sacks and if we don’t we will lose!

Guys – just chill out – we are 3-0 – hopefully getting players healthly for the second half of the season on both sides of the ball. Yes we all want Barden to catch a fade in the EZ – but hey Beckum caught his first two passes – and Johnson at RB causes a squad problem for when Ware returns.

For a banged up secondary with no pass rush we have the no 1 pass defence with 124 yards a game, so what if we are mid table in the rush defence – running the ball does not win you games – it helps you close them out when your passing game has got you the lead.

Just look at the Superbowl run in 2007 – this was keyed by Eli playing at the top of his game for the whole preseason and the defence playing lights out pass defence.

Yes we have tougher tests ahead – but just think that the Opp is very concerned with us because we are a strong, well rounded team with good depth.

Giants have 3 sacks total.

Anyone who has TIVO and has replayed these 3 games? Find out how many times a QB has had a clean throw and you’ll find out its less than 20% of the time.

This was very vanilla

We didn’t have our foot on the gas, we weren’t trying to blaze them. The Giants are notorious at not giving opponents much to watch on game film. They’ll always do just enough to win, and that’s it.

by YankeeDudeL on Sep 28, 2009 1:07 PM EDT reply actions

Seems to me, vanilla's exactly right.

The team hasn’t revealed a lot about its plans on O or D, not to say they’ll always do “just enough to win,” but they’ll certainly never give away what they don’t have to and they’ll never run up the score. I’m very encouraged by their record and how they’ve attained it, espacially considering all the injuries.

Leading the league in pass defense...

Is easily the most surprising/encouraging statistic considering our injuries, maybe JR knows what he’s doing with this secondary after all…they made their plays, albeit against the Bucs, but football is football.
