Giants News: Kenny Phillips may be done for the season

Photo

More photos » by Bill Kostroun - AP

[UPDATE NO. 2: It's all over 'Twitter,' from Mike Garafolo, Pat Hanlon, Ralph Vacchiano and others. The Giants have placed Kenny Phillips on IR and have been awarded safety Aaron Rouse off waivers from the Green Bay Packers.]

[UPDATE: There seems to be a lot of mystery about Phillips right now, and whether he will go on IR or not. Tom Coughlin is dancing around the KP question, and there seems to be an expectation that some type of roster move will be made later this afternoon. -- Ed V.]

Ernie Palladino is reporting that Kenny Phillips may have to go on injured reserve due to his knee injury.

From Ernie Palladino: (click link for full story)

The second-year safety and former first-round pick, who grabbed two interceptions against the Cowboys this past Sunday, might be placed on injured reserve soon, according to someone informed of the coming transaction. The person requested anonymity because the transaction hasn't been announced yet.

While this is bad news, I think we can all agree it isn't totally unexpected. We all know his knee was going to be a year long problem, but it is starting to sound like the pain is just too much to make him effective.

Damn this not good news at all… I thought he was going to have a breakout season… We dont have anybody to replace him with….

Damn...

This is one of the worst news of the year for the Giants, period.

Yeah, we like NFL here in Brazil.

Brown

Is the plan to have Brown start then in his place? I have to say that idea scares the crap out of me. I’d like to think we would pick up someone to shore up our secondary. Starting Brown worries me. Not just because his coverage & tackling abilities stink, but he seems to enjoy getting us penalties.

we won a super bowl

without a secondary basically. Gibril was good but couldn’t cover. As long as the pass rush is there, we’ll be fine.

In my opinion

This is better to have happened now, than toward the end of the season. Now there are options since the trade deadline hasn’t come up yet. Brown (strong) and Johnson (free) will have to do for now.

One step forward, two steps back!

Boley comes back, Kenny plays, Tuck gets hurt and now Kenny presumably goes to the IR! I guess nothing should be surprising anymore.

uh

tuck being down for a few games, especially the games coming up, we can deal with… we have enough depth on the line..

with our secondary.. our CBS are ok..

but safetys? we have three… if phillips goes down, we have two..

michael johnson and cc brown..

now we really need to go out and sign someone..

Phillips is fantastic and underrated. It looks like the obstacle to overcome this year will be injuries.

C.C. Brown...

I find myself constantly sticking up for C.C. Brown…he hasnt’ shown me much to justify it but I trust this organization.

The giants could have kept their 6th or 7th round draft pick instead of Bruce Johnson…heck they could stayed with Travonti Johnson instead of Bruce…but they didn’t.

that’s a clear sign that this team can recognize and evaluate talent.

Yes, C.C. looked bad in Preseason…so did Bruce Johnson.

But that’s to be expect in a new defense and after having missed a lot of playing time last year.

at the same time, i think a move for a S is needed…we can’t go on w/ 2 safeties…and i can’t really comment on the kids on the PS

this is worse than any injury on the d line

the only injury in the secondary that would be worse than this is corey webster. this is terrible news, we’ll only have 2 safeties if this happens. coming off a 2 INT game, just hitting is stride, i was expecting big things from kenny. i am anxious to see who the giants pick up and how, whether they sign someone or make a trade. i am not confident in CC Brown at all. this injury, along with the plethora of our other defenders on the injury list, has me really worried.

It's close... I'll list ours, then you list yours...

Shawn Andrews – IR (season) – hyperextended vulva
Stewart Bradley – IR (season) – ACL
Cornelius Ingram – IR (season) – ACL
Fenuki Tupou – IR (season) – No idea… broken fingernail? They’re “redshirting” him (so that kinda doesn’t count)
Donovan McNabb – likely 2 games – Rib
Todd Herremans – likely 6-8 games – Stress fracture, foot
Quintin Demps – likely 2-3 games – Hammy
Joe Mays – 2 games – Shoulder

Also… not practicing this week…

Brian Westbrook – Ankle
DeSean Jackson – Groin

Moss won't get it done... Mediocre WR's are a dime a dozen.

If I’m an opposing GM with some depth at safety and the Giants reach out to me, there’s a good chance that one of your backup D Linemen is better than what I have, and that’s what I’ll be asking for.

The only problem

is that our DL is banged up as well.

I posted lower down about Moss or Wilkinson – but I think a 2010 draft pick may be needed here.

A question for you Dawk – has Reid created a QB problem for the team. I assume Garcia will be gone, but will you try and keep Vick and if so what happens to wither McNabb or Kolb?

by G Fan in England on Sep 24, 2009 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I Will Take a Crack at This One

The fact that Eagles management is signing every available QB out there is proof that they have lost faith in McNabb, both in his ability to stay healthy and in his ability to win when it counts. They have let it be known that Vick is not a backup. He is a gadget guy who has been brought in to take 5-10 snaps per game away from McNabb. Garcia was brought in for depth. I wouldn’t be suprised if the Eagles carry 4 QB’s all year.

Look around at the teams that are utilizing the wildcat and the teams that are not. The teams that are putting in wildcat packages are the teams that do not have franchise QB’s, and are utilizing the wildcat to try to compensate. They are trying anything to give their offense more big play ability, consistency, and options. About 20 teams this year have some form of wildcat package. Now lets look at the teams that do not.

Pats
Colts
Saints
Chargers
Steelers
Giants
Cardinals

What to those 7 teams have in common? They have franchise QB’s. Could you imagine the Saints taking snaps away from Brees to have someone else take the ball from center? Sean Payton would have to have his head examined.

They’re not “signing every available QB out there.” That’s nonsense. They signed one… Jeff Garcia… A guy familiar with the offense that is nothing more than short-term insurance. What were they supposed to do? Go into last week’s game with ONE QB?

Also, I think you might be forgetting that they cut AJ Feeley.

Regarding the wildcat stuff, not sure about the “20 teams.” That sounds made up. As for the teams you noted that “don’t run the wildcat,” the Saints used Pierre Thomas in the wildcat during the preseason (he’s been hurt so far this year), the Steelers have apparently practiced it with Dennis Dixon, as have the Patriots with WR Julian Edelman.

Bye, Big Stew and JJ :(

by Bye, Dawk :( on Sep 24, 2009 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah Right, I Made It Up

During preseason I saw a long piece on the wildcat on NFL Network with the fact that 20 teams have at least some sort of wildcat package being the basis for the discussion. As far as the 3 teams you mention, running it in the preseason in an attempt to make other teams waste game plan time preparing for it and actually doing it in a regular season game are two different things. Perhaps the Steelers will do it because their ground game is so abysmal. Perhaps New England will if their offense continues to sputter. If New Orleans does it they’re nuts. In any case, you will not see the ball being thrown out of the formation like you will with the Eagles. Do you really think Sean Payton would risk having a running back throw an interception with the outcome of the game undecided? No way. Might he run some wildcat when his team is beating somebody by 21 pts in the 4th quarter? Perhaps. But that really isn’t what Philly brought Vick in for, is it?

by Be Driven on Sep 24, 2009 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, I get it...

The “20” unnamed teams that ran it during the preseason are actually going to use it.

The 3 teams with “Franchise QB’s” that I mentioned are just hoping that other teams will waste their time preparing for it.

That’s a bulletproof argument if I’ve ever seen one. Sorry for doubting your expertise.

You also need to run it yourself in practice so that your own defense can practice against it.

OK, well... whatever.

This is going off on a crazy tangent that I really don’t want to entertain any longer (especially since this is a post about Kenny Phillips)

If you think that Andy Reid is going to risk his own fat @ss and its job security in keeping the super bowl booting choke artist as his number one another year after they get oh so close to being important in this league, then I say great. What the f$%k is the internet?

by FreeBradshaw on Sep 24, 2009 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think so.

You’ll read a lot of nonsense from the clowns at ESPN (I’m looking at you Matt Mosely), that are more interested in looking for soap opera stories than reporting on football. It’s McNabb’s team, period. Kolb is the backup, Vick is just another weapon for the offense, and Garcia is temporary insurance. It’s pretty much that simple.

For Week 3, if McNabb can’t go, it’ll be…

Starter – Kolb
Backup – Vick
Emergency QB – Garcia

Once McNabb returns, it’ll be…

Starter – McNabb
Backup – Vick (he has to be listed as the backup if they want to bring him into the game)
Emergency QB – Kolb
Garcia will likely be cut.

Now, going forward…

McNabb’s contract is up after the 2010 season, and on a side note, Westbrook’s is too. I don’t know what will happen at that time, but for the next 2 years at a minimum, McNabb is the best option at QB (and a great option at that), and there’s no reason whatsoever… none… to think he isn’t the undisputed leader of the Eagles offense.

At this point, a pick may be the only option?

Not knowing exactly who is on our practice squad (sorry, i really don’t know) and if they are viable options for what we want to do (win, were not rebuilding), trading a pick seems most logical?

I glanced at a list of the available FA’s, then i came away with the feeling of, crap!

The Giants haven’t really been a team to make in-season trades, so this does pose an interesting situation. OK, the FA’s available are crap, we’re not confident (or have a PS replacement) for KP so the other and only option would be a trade!

To keep this realistically, i wouldn’t expect JR to trade pick(s) away for a top notch S. We still have KP for the future, just not the present. Whoever, or whatever they decide, especially when dealing with picks, it will be an investment. Not just putting your finger in a leaking dam type of thing!

JR has been brilliant up to this point, but the injury bug has perhaps caught up to him! No fault of his, but i will trust him for what may do now!

by Hootman on Sep 24, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Does the knee require surgery? If not I’d prefer waiting this out a little longer and sitting Phillips for a good chunk of the season. I know wasting a roster spot on an inactive player sucks, but I hate players going on IR unless they have no shot at returning. Didn’t Osi say e felt he was capable of returning before the end of last season?

by XLII on Sep 24, 2009 1:41 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

it looks like surgey is needed...

the problem with resting him mean he still takes up a spot on the roster and we still only have 2 safeties…if we call someone up for the PS that means someone will have to be cut or waived.

Yeah, plus, you could get away with that if you had more depth at a particular position

That’s why i like the idea’s of a new IR system. How ever it’s structured, atleast teams can compensate injured bodies for healthy ones and they’re not lost for the season! Who’s to say KP couldn’t play after our week 10 bye? That’s two months of rest and treatment!

I do not understand

why the Giants did not do more to shore up this position after they let Butler go. Most teams carry four safeties. We came out of pre season with only 3 even though it was clear that Phillips was at risk of missing at least some time. Maybe the thinking is that one of our corners can play safety (Terrell Thomas perhaps). But oops, with two cornerbacks hurt that’s not an option for another week or two at least. This just seems like bad planning.

If i’m not mistakened, they have him at FS?! I really don’t understand why they moved him there? He’s a decent tackler but his covering skills are questionable. I’m thinking the FS should have decent range. Afterall, he did lead the Raiders in tackles last year, but that can be easily broke down why. So i don’t know why they cut him?!

I have just had a thought

Even though we have just claimed Rouse, have a think about this idea?

It was mooted in the offseason that Boley had the size, speed and ball skills to play S.

Well guess what, we need someone to play safety so why not Boley.

We have the depth at LB (as Boley missed game 1)

So this maybe is the reason we only carried 3 safeties.

Anyone care to agree or disagree

I’m just not sure I’d want to see him in any coverage scheme where he had responsibility for a wide out, because while he’s got great coverage skills for a linebacker, I’m not sure he can cover all aspects of the safety position.

by Tucker Fredrickson on Sep 24, 2009 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting idea

but we need Boley to stay where he is. He is very valuable for the Linbacker core.

by GiantRB27 on Sep 24, 2009 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's just too difficult to learn a new position that quickly...

Not happening. If Boley had an entire preseason to work at safety, I’d say maybe, but even then it’s not that easy.

Bye, Big Stew and JJ :(

I agree

But on normal run downs it would work with the right adjustment to your zones.

by G Fan in England on Sep 24, 2009 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Keep the front seven intact

this will make it easier on the defensive backs and boley can use his speed and coverage skills on the elite tight ends in the nfc east.

by Mother Tucker on Sep 24, 2009 4:27 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

They could play a 4-4-3 or 4-3-4

with Boley covering the TE or the 8th man in the box against a standard pro set formation – you then sub the LB with a DB against 3 WR sets.

How about Boley covering the QB in the Wild Cat…

And here I was worrying about

someone going down on the O-line. BTW, G fan in England, congrats on coming up with good brainstorming ideas. Both of the ones you propose are worthy of serious consideration. I’m eager to see what JR does. Does anyone think he’ll stand pat with Rouse? I suppose he might, but I doubt it. He’s a very calm guy, though, not given to panicky/emotional/dramatic moves. TC’s cryptic comments are intriguing. Almost as eager to find out what they mean as I am about JR’s strategy.

This is

deflating after such a great win. I trust JR and the Coaching staff to make the adjustments to deal with this situation.

He was really coming into his own and playing well for being hurt.

Guys, guys

Why are we going off the deep end talking crazy stuff like moving Boley to safety? The safeties will play safety, the linebackers will play linebacker … the Giants won’t do anything nuts. Yes, it’s a big loss. The Giants aren’t the only team that will lose good players. In truth, it’s up to the front 7 to make plays and keep the pressure off the DBs, that’s really the bottom line.

by Ed Valentine on Sep 24, 2009 5:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Ed - all I said was

Boley is going to be the same as most strong safeties in the league – so on certain downs he can play the postion without the defence suffering a drop off. He can still blitz etc.

If the front 7 and in particular the front 4 do their job he will not be exposed any more than Rouse or Brown would be, plus no doubt he is a better tackler.

On passing downs you will get the DB’s in and Boley reverts to LB.

As I said just a thought and JR/TC will have probably thought about it as well

by G Fan in England on Sep 24, 2009 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Then again, as

G fan explains the “move to safety” it’s not quite that, nor is it a particularly wild idea. Reading about Rouse, though, I’m wondering if JR has already done all he needs to.

by blue gonz on Sep 24, 2009 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The thing is

Boley is 6-3 and 223 and Rouse is 6-4 and 230…

GB tried to convert Rouse froma LB in college to a S in the Pros.

So I personally would feel happier with Boley playing SS than Rouse…

by G Fan in England on Sep 25, 2009 3:58 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Boley was brought in to give some speed to a slow LB core

One of the problems last year was that none of the LBs could cover TEs like cooley and witten and they couldnt keep up with westbrook coming out of the backfield. why complicate the two positions by having boley move to safety. have the front seven bring the pressure and have the safties be like centerfielders in baseball. it won them a superbowl before.

by Mother Tucker on Sep 24, 2009 5:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Damn.

You know, I was almost gonna make a fanpost on how the Giants Kenny Phillips almost annymously picked off 2 passes on Sunday….we might actually finally have that great Miami U saftey we were dreaming about…

THen this. My jaw dropped when I saw it and I still got a queezy feeling in my stomach. I mean, he’s not one of those top players on the team, but he’s a second year guy and a very important part, he was leading the team in tackles I think.

I don’t know what else to think.

I saw an Eagles fanpost during training camp after all the injures they had, it went sort of like “fuck you, we’re winning anyway”.

After all this crap happening to this team, I’m feeling that way right now.

What the f$%k is the internet?

Rouse isn't the total answer..

We are in deep doo-doo across the secondary now..JR neeeds to do more to sure up this weakness..We visit Brees in a few weeks..and anybody can pick us apart passing at this point…and hold your breath on the OL..So far they are holding up..Our DL has to stop the run too they stunk against Dallas…We have alot to worry about on defense now across the board.

Id think Phillips could be back and raring to go

in around week12 or something like that (That’s 9 weeks….), IR is a horrible rule.

Kinda like that whole rookie pay-scale thing, this is another thing that needs to be addressed (tho probably is more tangible……)

I really hope CC Brown doesn’t make Leftwich look like the Top 10 pick he was supposed to be. COnsidering TUck is probably out too, that’s a good size hit to the pass rush too.

Here’s to Osi being pissed, Kiwi showing up in Tuck’s absence……

AND NO MORE INJURIES!

What the f$%k is the internet?

by FreeBradshaw on Sep 24, 2009 8:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Everyone chill out

Yes we lost Alford and Brown in the Preseason and Phillips has gone on IR.

Tuck as a result of a foul is banged up and a number of guys are not at full speed or yet to get on the field.

However, the position is not as bad as it seems, as the starting offence is still intact, the defence is not as bad as it looks stats wise and even Tynes went 4 for 5!

So let’s all step back off the ledge, get the next two games played and hopefully win both and then take stock.

Thank you, G Fan

This is why you build a deep roster, and why we should be thankful we have Jerry Reese.

And thankful for this year's schedule.

(Not that I’m taking anything for granted.)

offence? defence?

Are you a Yank in England, or a Limey fan of Big Blue? It would be nice to know we have (the beginnings of) an international fan base.

He’s a limey… Some of his language is revealing.

"whence"

methinks the use of the terminology obviates the question.

Maybe,

but I want to hear from G fan himself.
