Chris Canty out of Sunday's game

The bad news for the New York Giants comes courtesy of  Mike Garafolo.

Giants defensive tackle Chris Canty will be sidelined for the first time in his NFL career this coming Sunday.

Canty, who must have been looking forward to facing the Cowboys after they allowed him to sign with their division rivals this off-season, will be out at least one week with a calf injury suffered in practice on Wednesday, someone informed of the diagnosis confirmed. NFL.com was first to report Canty would be sidelined.

The person informed of Canty's injury said he suffered a strain that won't require surgery. The person said Canty might miss a few games but "he won't be out too long." In fact, the person refused to rule out Canty for the Week 3 game against the Buccaneers. It appears Canty's status is what Tom Coughlin usually calls "week to week."

Since the Giants released Leger Douzable this week that leaves them with three defensive tackles able to play. We'll see if they gamble and stay with three, bring Douzable back or maybe add Anthony Bryant off the practice squad.

im tired of injuries!

all offseason i was excited about how much depth we had on the defensive line, now these guys are dropping like flies…

This is why I was surprised...

we cut douzable instead of Wilkinson. I know we have depth at the DT position … but that depth consists of 2 guys coming back from knee surgery, and 2 free agents coming off injury (and now one is back on the Injury Report).

With that being said i don’t think DT depth will be too big an issue on Sunday. If you look at the DT Snaps chart posted the other day canty i think got 22-23 vs washington…I assume Tuck could get more snaps in passing situations so cofield, robbins, and bernard will really only get 5-7 extra plays…This is all contingent upon time position as well…so it could be more or less….hopefully less! It wouldn’t hurt though if we had an extra body like douzable or bryant who could play a few downs.

Line Depth and Versatility

We’ve lot Alford, and cut Douzable. But the success of this line was not based solely around depth. It’s also based on versatility. Tuck and Canty are guys that can play both inside and outside. Guys like Robbins are great at stopping the run and rushing the passer. So you will probably see more plays with Tuck at DT, and them bringing in Kiwanuka and Tollefson at DE.

How is this possible?

Canty hasn’t missed a game in his pro career… his first miss is against his Cowboys in the new stadium?! JR sure didn’t see this coming… pay $45M and he’s injured… again. Maybe he’ll be fine after the Cowboys game.

with tuck

rotating in there, i dont think there really should be a problem on Sunday. It’s unfortunate, no doubt, but for a week we can def handle it. Give tuck more reps at dt, give kiwanuka more reps at de. still a very scary d-line.

also, what about sintim? is he still injured? he lined up at de a few times in the preseason, so he could help take some of tucks snaps if u moved him in the middle more.

That's disappointing

Considering he’s a former Cowboy. Would have been neat to see my ’Boys play against him.

damn injuries

i really hope we’re getting these injuries out of our system now and we’ll be healthy towards the end of the year. i think the giants will be fine without him in the short term

the bye week

comes at a great time, right smack in the middle of the season

He wants to watch the big screen

As Canty will only get to play one game a season at JerryWorld he wants to watch the game on the big screen.

I predict he will be fit for the game next season..

That's a bummer..

Canty and Boley…What are we running here, a multi-million dollar welfare program?..Maybe the Giants will qualify for a dang government bailout..Geez!!..They’d be better off tossing that cash from the roof of the Empire State building so fans can afford to buy tickets..and a 12 dollar hotdog with a 18 dollar beer!!

seriously...

and i’m not jumping to conclusions here but this is a problem.

hamstring injuries, pulled groins, and calf strains seem like preventable injuries….
