Giants 23, Redskins 17: A good way to start

A lot of positive signs in today's 23-17 victory by our New York Giants over the Washington Redskins. The game was much closer than it should have been, and I could have done without that. Right now, though, I am pretty happy with what I saw.

There are, of course, a couple of things I am really not happy about.

  • How do you give up a touchdown ON A FAKE FIELD RUN BY A PUNTER? That's ridiculous.
  • With Brandon Jacobs and a tremendous offensive line how do you not get two yards in two plays inside the 5? I don't want to hear complaints about Kevin Gilbride. With two tries and a 270-pound running back the Giants offense has got to be able to pick up two yards.

Anyway, off and running with a victory. Back in the morning with a full 'Kudos & Wet Willies.'

agreed

with everything you said however the game wasn’t even as close as the final score. I really don’t like playing off late in games. Sheridan needs to continue the game plan and finish it off. Anyways 1-0 is all that matters up next the cowboys. LETS GO BIG BLUE

Agreed that it should not have been that close in the final score ...

but the game always IS as close as the final score, it just means the team that was more dominant in general throughout did not finish its opportunities. That’s a bit worrisome, but overall it was a solid win, in spite of more than usual amount of injuries going in.

Perfect Week One game

Giants win, but enough things went wrong so that they don’t feel too good about themselves and Coughlin will be on their butts this week.

good points, but I think Coughlin is on their butts no matter what

too bad it was only once that i could see, AND it was only on special teams. can someone please tell me why we kept him instead of maurice evans?

going to sleep on the fake field goal. Nice “veteran” move. Wish someone would take him for a # 7 pick.

Short yardage

The short yardage offense definitely needs work. It wasn’t just the one series. We ran five plays after having second and less than 3 on two series in the red zone and just didn’t get the job done. We had the same problem at the end of the last game of last year as well, though not in the red zone. Hard to figure out how a team that consistently gets positive yardage in the run game has so much trouble in these key situations. I’m not sure what the answer is, but making those first downs would have made this one a laugher.

by Tucker Fredrickson on Sep 13, 2009 7:55 PM EDT reply actions

That's where I do think

you gotta credit Haynesworth some. THat’s what he’s there to do, control the line of scrimmage. THe Giants are too good to let him completely stop them tho. But I think that you gotta give credit where its due. Their D-Line didn’t get much of a pass rush, but up the guy and off guard on those 3rd down plays, they canceled out their man well.

by FreeBradshaw on Sep 13, 2009 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions

we can't get 2 yards

because it’s obvious that we’re running and the defense just stacks the line. a play action would be deadly here, but for some reason they’d rather just do what the defense knows is coming

by bmanley620 on Sep 14, 2009 2:11 AM EDT up reply actions

I wonder with all the injuries

If the Giants would be inclined to give TJ Duckett a call.

by DoctorK16 on Sep 13, 2009 8:07 PM EDT reply actions

Id think they give someone a call...

but I got a feeling that Allen Patrick could be pretty good. He’s faster than Adrian Peterson apparently (both played at OU), that has to count for something.

I do think they could use that 3rd RB and I think he gets activated for next week.

I was very happy

With the way the Giants offense moved the ball in the first half. Obviously punching the ticket when in the “Green Zone” still needs addressing (I can’t say I cared for that pitch to Bradshaw on 3rd and 1 the first drive) , but eating up the clock and not punting until the third quarter is exactly what you want to do to the Skins.

Overall Eli did a great job of spreading the ball around against a top 10 defense (excluding in the second half when it seemed as though he was getting tons of pressure) and I really couldn’t be happier with how the WRs played. Even though Hicks dropped one, I really hope he makes a speedy recovery…I like him out there.

Off to Dallas.

Corey Webster

Was a monster today. He totally shut Moss down all game, and did you see that INT?

Glad to see Osi back to form, sack, forced fumble, TD, who else does that besides Osi?

Eli played did a good job today…still I want the ball going to Boss more often, look what he does when he gets the ball in his hands, why doesn’t the coaching staff make this happen more often, 3 catches for 60 yards? Come on

Great win today, dominated all game, can’t wait til next week, see what we have in Boley (Canty and Benard looked pretty good, too) and hopefully we get Ross back

by JerellB on Sep 13, 2009 8:16 PM EDT reply actions

yeah, that pick

was the most athletic interception I’ve ever seen. that was a thing of beauty. he really is an amazing defender

CWebster

will be pro bowl if he keeps playing like he did against the Skins.

Kudos to Osi but CW was the defensive MVP in this game.

by MSP Giant on Sep 14, 2009 7:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree

The INT was phenominal but the simple fact that we didn’t hear his name the rest of the game unless it was praise.

In replays of coverage it just looked like he knew where Moss was going before he went there.

We played a good game today. I wasn’t overly impressed and they do have some areas that need to be addressed. And yes CWeb was an absolute stud today.

Great game.

Nice to make the Skins fans shut up. Hopefully at least for a week the talk about Eli and the passing game die down.

Gilbride really was only Killdrive on the first drive; you don’t pitch a ball inside the 10. Maybe you do….but not the Giants. If Jacobs was indeed nicked up on that play and Bradshaw needed to be used, run him up the guy, i don’t care about Haynesworth.

Eli looked great aside from that one pass, and really that was on the money and required an excellent dive by Landry to force the INT.

Injuries are stacking up a bit. Hopefully Dockery comes back, Ross too. Nicks I hope aint gone too long, he looked legit out there.

DOn’t know about Danny Ware. Really sucks that he was out and that’s a loss that could hurt. Who would’ve thought when the Giants had 4 RB’s to start the season that they’d be down to 2 so soon (and one of them wouldn’t be Jacobs?

Dislocated elbow sounds horrible, hopefully its really not and Ware at most is only out for say…3-6 weeks?

2 biggest faults were not getting into the end zone enough with the O. I think play action down there, maybe a lob to Hixon or even Smith or Boss or eventually Barden will happen.

And the other is the secondary lapses. Those will die down as guys get healthy. Boley will cover TE’s hopefully and do it well. CC Brown will play, but Blitz mostly and play on running downs. TT should be a backup safety when Dockery and Ross comeback, so that hopefully would solve taht.

W is a W. With all the injuries, it could have hurt worse. It didn’t cuz of our QB. Be thankful we have such a talent at QB. There, I said it.

What the f$%k is the internet?

by FreeBradshaw on Sep 13, 2009 8:37 PM EDT reply actions

If you don't want to hear any complaints about Gilbride

then cover your ears. Our offensive line is good because they are mobile and they use that mobility to open up rushing lanes on misdirections, traps, and outside runs. There strength is not straight-ahead, power blocking yet whenever we are in a crucial short yardage situation that’s what Gilbride asks them to do. Trouble converting on 3rd and 2’s is not an isolated incident for the Giants, it’s been a problem for years now. Yes it would be nice if all our linemen were 30 pounds stronger (although you would probably see a less effective run game on 1st and 2nd down), but they are not and Gilbride has to adjust to that. I don’t claim to know the solution. I realize the Giants did try an outside run on one of those 3rd downs where Bradshaw wasn’t able to convert. Still, in the long run mixing in more, what’s the word, finesse? run plays, and more short passes to our shifty little receivers would probably prove more effective then playing to your offensive line’s weakness.

I don’t totally get Football Outsider Stats, but these ones here seem to support my stance. Last year the Giants o-line’s power rank was 23 (though they ranked 4th overall), yet Gilbride continues to run the same ineffective plays on 3rd and short. He needs to make adjustments.

by XLII on Sep 13, 2009 8:43 PM EDT reply actions

in that power ranking...

Seattle is ranked 4th, making that power ranking irrelevant.

I have no problem with Gilbride calling the dives to Jacobs. The Skins DID get a 360 lbs guy named Haynesworth, I think that did somethign to stop those.

Its week one. Id think Gilbride has enough of a clue to mix in a play action. Or just pass…cuz you know…the Giants were actually damn good on third down today.

Giving credit to a very good D is also not a bad idea. The Skins D is legit.

I would have liked to see the pass to Boss or something like that on those plays, but I think they will over time (and if it fails…people will be bitching about “where’s Jacobs”…)

I hate defending Gilbride…but he’s the OC of the Gints, so I’ll live with it.

by Joe_D on Sep 13, 2009 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

yup.

they don’t seem to get it either with the offense. I think Campbell could be good, they just try stuff too far down the field. Not using Cooley enough, no slants. THere’s only so much Portis can do too.

They do have the talent. I think us Giants fans (and probably you Eagles fans too) don’t know what we have with our playcallers. It COULD be worse.

And why would you hate the Giants warming up against the Skins? You guys didn’t do so good last year did you?

….I envy the fact you got to face Delhomme in week one, don’t even have to work for the turnovers…..

Yes, yes they would.

On a day when they play like the team that finished 12-4 and secured a first round playoff bye, I think not.

Random Question

Is this Fred Robbins last year on his contract?

by JerellB on Sep 13, 2009 8:54 PM EDT reply actions

Theres always room for complaints against Gilbride

for no other reason than he persists to use sweeps w/ Bradshaw on 3 and short rather than using the largest RB in the league and going through the middle.

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

by bren on Sep 13, 2009 9:16 PM EDT reply actions

eh

going through the middle with the big guy didn’t work either. I don’t really know what the problem is in those short yardage situations, but the Giants just seem to struggle with them no matter what they do. Hell, even in the Super Bowl, we baaaaarely converted that 4th and 1 that would have ended the game

by cjmulrain on Sep 14, 2009 1:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Play Selection

Brandon Jacobs is a much better back when he gets his pads square to the line of scrimmage. He needs to run down hill, not outside. The only way those plays are there is if you control the middle of the field. The Redskins are an exception because of the load in the middle.

When the Giants won the Super Bowl, Gilbride was considered a genius. I think the mix was excellent and we need a power running game to establish our play action and teams are not going to load up 8 in the box if they think we are running sweeps all day. Blue Crew looked awesome today.

by Marc Emmer on Sep 13, 2009 9:24 PM EDT reply actions

Umm...

I don’t remeber ANYBODY refering to Gilbride as a “Genius”…Maybe you have him mixed up with Spags the true “Genius”

Man…I hope the Rams release him in time when Coughlin retires, Spags would be the perfect head coach for us

Eli...

made a few questionable throws…the interception was one and the incomplete pass to hixon in the first half was a horrible decision, he threw that ball into triple coverage.

Webster was a beast as usual. I don’t even know why they throw anywhere near him.

HUGE surprise…Bruce Johnson played better than I could ever imagine.

T. Thomas heeds to become a better tackler…

Chase Blackurn again put in a solid performance…please let this man play SAM when Bioley comes back. I was at the game and now i’m watching the replay and so far D. Clark has contributed an assisted tackle.

Linebackers

Having too many linebackers is a great problem to have, especially given how thin we have been at the position. Still worry about Antionio’s age and vulnarability. Once healthy, our strarting secondary should be very good. So excited about this defense.

Maybe what we should be worried about is special teams.

by Marc Emmer on Sep 13, 2009 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Hixon...

Didn’t come back to that ball, if I remember correctly. He sat and the route was jumped. It might not have been the best decision, but Hixon didn’t help.

The pick was just a bad decision.

by sjohnson125 on Sep 13, 2009 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

honestly...

the kid who jumped the route made a great read. I just watched the replay.

Hixon was following the flight of the ball and didn’t even see him…but eli’s gotta be careful for that b/c until we start beating teams over the top they’re gonna sit on those underneath routes.

Your only saying that becuase Joe Buck and Troy Aikman said this during the telecast

Many linebackers are overlooked. Chad Greenway, Keith Bulluck, Donnie Edwards, etc.
Unless your name is Urlacher, or Ray Lewis your hardly mentioned.
Patrick Willis another great linebacker, has led the leauge in tackles, and is he a household name? No.

No, I actually said it right at the beginning of the game.

My brother and I always meet to watch Giants games together. Today, as they were warming up, I saw Fletcher and said, “Oh, I like him a lot. He’s good.” And Fletcher is better than all those guys, except maybe Bullock, who I love.

secondary
thomas obviously got picked on today....he got beat when he was covering Randel El (as opposed to Kelly), and got caught chasing him from behind a few times.

When he’s playing slot…which he was today when Bruce Johnson was on the field. He needs to be better prepared for those crossing patterns…it’s very hard covering a speedster running across the field. You expect that to happen now that he’s starting but you also expect to see some improvement as well…hopefully today was a learning experience.

Bruce Johnson…played great IMO. I’m shocked Zorn didn’t look to take advantage of that…maybe he was too busy trying to go at Thomas???

Great game

though the Giants let it get a lot closer than it should have been. The fake field goal was awful, but one of those plays where you just have to tip your hat to the other team for executing a gutsy call, and never let it happen again.

by cjmulrain on Sep 14, 2009 1:20 AM EDT reply actions

A win is a win....

Wahington’s defense, especially with Haynesworth, has to be considered a formidable force. Even though his personal stats weren’t impressive he had a large effect on our running game.

To be able to debate our shortcomings while enjoying the win is good enough for me this week.

by giant fan since 57 on Sep 14, 2009 5:17 AM EDT reply actions

I agree...

But I just didn’t think we ran it up the gut enough..and have Jacobs put his pads on Haynesworth running full tilt..The skins pretty much telegraphed their defensive plans, days before the game, so one would think we’d have planned better for it..Overall, I’ll take the win..but I thought they played “spotty” football…some great things and some lousy things..Lots to work on before Dallas.
