DT Depth To Spare?
First I want to say hey from Panther land and congratulations on the win last season to lock up the NFC. That was one exciting, yet difficult game to watch. You guys put up a ludacris amount of rushing yardage against us partly due to the fact that we had injuries and a lack of depth at the DT position. The other part was due to your great O-line and RB's. (I expect you to miss Ward, but my boy Dre' Brown will help you to forget him)
Going into training camp this year DT depth was again a position of concern for us. Then we lost starting 6'5" 345lbs DT Maake Kemoeatu for the year with a torn achilles tendon in the first practice of the season. So now I find myself looking around the league at teams with loads of talent and/or experience at DT. In my opinion the NY Giants have the best group of D-linemen in the league. So I ask you, got any to spare? How many DT's do you usually keep on the 53 man roster? Who do you expect to be cut at DT? What position would you be looking to improve on, like for example in a trade? Thanks for the info, and see you guys on the 17th.

No one.
Robbins had offseason surgery as did Cofield. That’s why we got Canty and Bernard.
We do have some UFA that probably won’t make the team like Maurice Evans, so there.
There has been rumor..
Floating around that there may be some trade potential in the wings, but I am not sure if DTs would be in the mix if in fact that is true. I was sorry to hear about Kemoeatu..that was a big blow.
I have always been and always will be a diehard Giants fan (since birth), but lived in Raleigh for 15 years and would root for the Panthers (as long as they weren’t playing the Giants)..I always admired John Fox…I also root for the Dolphins in the same way, because of Parcells. I was hoping Romeo Crommel could have had some success, but he has been in the Dolphins camp observing, and I suspect he may land a job with them. The only ex-giant coach I can’t root for, is Belicheck..He has the personality of a “cow-pie”.
Anyway, I agree with the observation above (not the way it was conveyed) that the Giants have Robbins and Cofield coming off injuries, if they get 100% healthy then who knows? Fox has ties with the Giants and perhaps something could possibly happen there to help the Panthers, afterall the Giants are loaded at that position.
No one will be traded....
The Giants coaching staff has a plan for all the linemen. Have you read this?
http://www.nypost.com/seven/08102009/sports/giants/tom_playing_whats_my_line__183837.htm
Now we know what the Giants are planning to do with all these accomplished defensive linemen, two of whom (Chris Canty and Rocky Bernard) were signed as free agents, one of whom (Osi Umenyiora) is returning to a unit fourth in the NFL sacks in 2008 without him.
During practice yesterday, the returning Justin Tuck (foot) played inside on a five-man front.
“More to come,” said coach Tom Coughlin. "We have guys [Bernard and incumbents Fred Robbins and Barry Cofield] who aren’t practicing yet.
“Different alignments, different situations, trying to create some issues for people. [We’re] just getting started.”
Hi Major..
No, I didn’t see the Post article, since I now live in South Florida, but that is exactly what I was hoping for, and commented on that very thing on " Bigblue"…I hope they mix, match, confuse the opposition with that talent. It will cause fits with the opposition..they won’t know what they are going to get hit with throughout the course of a game.
Our greatest strength on the defensive line,,,
Is also our greatest weakness on the offensive side of the ball.
We need to address that. If we go into this season expecting our O-Line to go injury free for a third consecutive year we’re going to be in for a long season, especially considering our investment behind center is the definition of “pocket passer”.

meh....
all O-Line’s really aren’t built for depth. The bottom line with any unit is the starters go down, the line takes a step back.
The only real way to build depth is for the starters to get hurt, a youngin steps in for a while, then when the vet comes back the youngin has experience.
They have Beatty now, and a guy like Reyes can be gold should a OG get hurt. Whimper and Koets, two former later round guys, could have been OK, but they never had a chance cuz the other guys stay on the field or they get hurt themselves.

the iggles
didn’t take a step back last year.. you could argue they got better as the year went on.

i'd be willing to trade
Alford or Cofield for Jon Beason haha. But seriously, Dan Connor and a mid to late round pick would be a fine trade for Cofield whose contract is almost up.

Well
Assuming they won’t cut Canty or Bernard, since they are new acquisitions, plus Cofield and Robbins are the incumbent starters, and Alford does some long snapping, so one would guess at least 5. Remaining guys are all pretty young, so they may just go to the practice squad.

Maurice Evans was tearing it up during OTA’s. What happened to him?
