Q: What makes Eli the guy you want?

A: He’s a franchise quarterback. He’s done everything we ask him to do. He’s come in, he takes a lot of flack from you guys and he just keeps going. He does what we ask him to do on the field. He does what we ask him to do off the field. He’s a good football player.

Simply, you lock up your Franchise QB

Eli doesn’t have the stats of the top guys, but he wins like the top guys (and more than some…Brees), and that’s all that matters.

You don’t want to be like the Giants of yesteryear and signing Kerry Collins, Kurt Warner, Dave Brown…..I won’t go any farther.

Those guys were all OK (Brown and Warner sucked tho) but Eli is better than them all. He’s the franchise guy and we all want him here till this contract is up and probably even longer (Sorry Rhett……)

"[H]e wins like the top guys (and more than some…Brees)"

And that doesn’t have anything to do with the players around the two? This is just stupid. Quarterbacks throw passes, teams win games.

So what's Tony Romo's excuse?

35 Pro Bowlers on one team and he still couldn’t get a playoff W???

Many athletes would have folded under the intense pressure and scrutiny of New York. He was under the microscope more than most in my opinion and he still found a way to work through it and succeed. Not enough people, Giants fans included, give him credit for that .

The highest payed player in the NFL

Ugh….Give me a break. I am embarrassed.

Agree

I like the guy and he is the franchise QB… but this is pretty insane.

by Hood on Aug 5, 2009 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not the highest paid player

Carson Palmer and Julius Peppers make more. Plus, this time next year there will be 4-5 more guys who are paid more. Salaries continue to climb. 5 years ago, no QB made more than 10 mil. Now there are 6-7 who make 13+.

I’m not saying I agree with the salary, I think they’re overpaying by a bit. But there’s no question he’s worth at least 13 mil, and in a few years, at the rate salaries are climbing, having him locked into 16 mil might look like a steal.

it's just the way

the market works… would you rather guarantee Matt Stafford 6 million dollars more to play behind a patchwork o-line?

We do not have a patch O-line

Eli is a decent player, but the Giants overpayed.

Yeah, look at all those eye-popping free agent QBs they could have used to strengthen their bargaining position. I mean with Charlie Batch, JP Losman, and Dan Orlovsky still available out there, Eli and his agent would be quaking in their boots and will jump at the chance of signing at half that.

I dont mind paying him that

as long as its in his contract that he cant loft any more ducks into the wind against the Eagles. Reverse incentives.

Eli

I don’t mind paying him that amount. I think he’s done well all things considered:

-He has a decent record in the tough NFC East against the rest of the Division (14-10 since 2005 when he became the full time starter)
-He’s brought us a Superbowl victory against an 18-0 record setting NE Patriot team
-He’s managed to lead the Giants to the playoffs 4 years in a row

Also consider the fact that he’s had to deal with not one, not two, but three other players who haven’t been the best of teammates. I’m talking about Tiki Barber, Jeremy Shockey, and Plaxico Burress. The latter two never did Eli any favors by making themselves scarce during the off season.

Seriously guys

I can’t believe people are flipping out because of his ranking on the pay charts. He is a starting QB, that has had success and won the ultimate prize. He also has a chance to compete for several more. Now his contract was coming up, and it was his turn to get paid. Do you really think that JR and the Giants brass were going to go into negotiations and say “Eli, you are our starting QB, and you did bring us a SB ring, but since you didn’t single-handedly win the game and your stats aren’t as good as some other guys, would you mind being the 10th or 11th highest paid player?” This isn’t Madden, you can’t play around with the trading feature until you get what you want. The only alternative is to let him leave, and start over with a brand new QB on a team that is built to compete right now. Seriously, what sense does that make? I can understand bitter Eagles fans having a larf, but Giants fans? What other possible alternative is out there? To all the people complaining who claim to be Giants fans, what exactly would make you happy?

if i were to play devils advocate

I’d say that it would be nice to see what Eli does THIS year before we resign him. Here’s the catch; obviously the giants have emerged as a top team in the NFL…going to the playoffs is now longer the teams’ goal. We’re expected now not only to win but win it all, and I think anything short of a SB appearance would be a disapointment to a lot of people.

With that being said, it’s really pointless how Eli performs during the regular season b/c a first round playoff loss will over ride even a great regular season. So if the Gians decided to wait and see how he plays this year they would basically have no time to re sign him (unless it’s right before the Super Bowl, like they did Tuck or dare I say it; an early playoff exit)

So than what? You re sign him for slightly less money because your still not willing to let him hit the open market. Big deal… Not to mention the head ache and media circus you save your team from.

it was smart we signed him now…and oh btw, ELI better sign that effin piece of paper b/c it’s more than fair lol.

Eli would be a FA after this year

You’d rather see a team offer him this very same contract and force the Giants to pay more?

Hasn’t he shown enough already to where you want him as the QB? What would be the backup plan? Rhett Bomar is ready (and better?) David Carr? Tarvaris Jackson? Who?

Of course its smart to sign him now. This is market value and its not like QB’s who you know can play in the NFL grow on trees.

Is it just me?

Or does it seem like Eli’s contract is getting more criticism than Matt Cassel’s?

by da cut on Aug 6, 2009 8:07 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Of course it does

you do realize this is Eli Manning right? The guy has heard more crap from EVERYONE since he entered the league. Of course when he gets his big payday that he deserves he will get ridiculed.

True Giants fans don’t give a rats ass (and the some that are complaining will change too) as long as the guy wins on the field.

I know damn well that when the Yankees do their thing on the field that most of the true Yankee fans don’t give a crap what the guy makes, just do what ‘earned’ you those big bucks. Eli aint getting paid THAT much either.

Giants Making a Statement

The Giants have been very consistent in going after players who fit the kind of team that they want – selfless, team-oriented, hard working, intelligent people who fit in and don’t make waves on or off the field.
It is no accident that the G-men never have the same kind of drama that the Cowgirls have, for example (at least not since Shockey left). No divas wanted. Eli fits in perfectly.

The most common criticism of Eli is that his stats are worse than those of the recognized top quarterbacks, such as Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. The Giants’ offense is built around running the ball and controlling the clock and does not require a brilliant QB to be successful. In that context, Eli’s stats are not as important as his ability to lead the team and manage the game. Not every QB would be happy with an approach that does not center on them, but Eli is obviously OK with that and has worked hard to get better at game management.
As St. Jerry said, Eli has done everything they have asked him to do and has won a lot of games doing it. Why would they not want to lock him up?
